Daughtry performed on Friday as part of the “FOX & Friends” “All-American Summer Concert Series.” After he finished his set, the hosts asked if he would stick around to sing a patriotic song with the audience in honor of D-Day. Here’s what happened:

Many viewers saw Daughtry’s reaction as disrespectful and took to Twitter to share their feelings:

But not everyone agreed:

Though viewers may dispute the meaning of Daughtry’s actions, one thing is for sure:

And we are eternally grateful for their bravery. God bless our veterans.

MSN has a video running right now called 50 Summer Songs in 80 Seconds where they play 1-2 seconds of an “iconic” song from the summer of each year 2013 back to 1963. I didn’t recognize a single one from 2013 until 1996, and that one was the Macarena song. I am getting seriously old.

Chris Daughtry plays for the U.S military all the time. He was simply caught off guard and asked to do something in the spur of the moment without preparation in front of a live audience. Stop taking it so personally

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

I dunno, I’ve been in situations where I felt people were trying to rope me in to say something/sing something/do something that fit an agenda, and didn’t much care how I felt about it. Now, you might figure that any red-blooded American can and should sing some sort of song to recognize “D + 70 Years,” and should want to do so as well, but he may simply have reacted, as I would have done in the situations where I felt something was being sprung on me, without his giving much thought to the fact of its being patriotic or a commemoration of the brave men of the Normandy beaches.

Go on the Rachel Maddow Show (assuming she’d have you on in the first place) and get roped into something like singing “Oh, you can’t scare me, I’m stickin’ to the Union!” and then cast stones. He may really be a douchebag, but then again, he may not– I’m not prepared to say, based solely on this.

  • Baptized

Chris said it in jest. He said “I’m off the clock. I’ll watch you guys.”
    – and they mention about performing another song, and they can’t even
remember the words, so Chris says “You’re going to open a can of worms.
This is where I bail.” – He didn’t want to be apart of a song where no
one knew the lyrics. That would be downright disrespectful.

    • Nan231

      Haha, nice try.

    • jaded

how about “hey guys, off the top of my head I can’t think of a patriotic song, but how about one more song we’ll sing in honor of all the great nations that were a part of liberating those during WWII?” *enter applause*.

  • BuckeyeSam

My first thought is that he doesn’t know any patriotic songs. For him, being an a**hole was preferable to looking like an idiot.

  • GSONC123

to be fair, it sounds like the show didn’t ask him in advance to play a patriotic song. most bands don’t just have a patriot song up their sleeve to “whip out” on live television… my guess is he would have been hit harder with criticism if he’d attempted a song he and his band didn’t know and butchered it. people would’ve been saying that THAT was disrespectful to veterans. from the musician side, the show host shouldn’t have put him on the spot like that. if they had asked for another one of his songs, i think he would’ve reacted differently.

  • scott206

That’s cool. As far as I’m concerned he can consider himself off the payroll too.

  • rreactor

Sounds like he was “blindsided” and made an unfortunate remark to avoid being embarrassed singing something without preparation. I’ve seen situations
like this many times. Hosts put their guests in “gotcha” situations and sometimes it creates a completely false impression about the guest. I’m not willing to paint him as unpatriotic based on this incident.

    • jaimo

Fox and Friends is so unorganized when it comes to this kind of stuff and they’re all hacks, they should have told him upfront that they wanted to do this, but I don’t blame Daughtry for not wanting to be involved in some hack job of a patriotic song with 30 seconds to kill.

  • Servo1969

    • CO2 Producer

  • Dobermite

This is why you have to stick with country music, they are the only entertainers left in America who are proudly patriotic:

    • http://www.zeph1.com zeph1

Reading through Chris Daughtry’s musical influences, not a single one of them was country. He never was, as they say, “about that life.” That is, other than temporarily using it as a selling point for his music.

    • cyndo123

Powerful video. I hadn’t seen it before. Thanks for sharing.

      God Bless the USA!

      • Dobermite

Its my all-time favorite video, cyndo :-)

He made it shortly after 9-11, when all real Americans (that counts out liberals) were still chomping at the bit for revenge, before liberals could make people feel guilty about wanting to wipe the Islamo-fascists off the face of the planet for what they did to us on 9-11.

        • cyndo123

I had heard the song. (not seen the video). I so wish we were still chomping at the bit. IMHO.. We will relive this sooner than we think.

    sad but true

  • NCRelite

He performed his set that they likely rehearsed, you don’t just throw out a curve ball like that.

    • Guest

A curve ball? Let’s say for instance he never learned, “America” or the “Star Spangled Banner”, all he had to do was go to the microphone and say the most simple thing, like..”As an American, I would like to thank all the men who served and their heroic acts on D-Day.”

    • Kelly Walters

          • Perso Nasplit

fanboy? no, just a vet that doesnt think putting someone on the spot is the right thing to do, and you crying about how offended he didnt personally sing to YOU is so petty.

The fact you seem to think this guy owes you something is very telling. I wouldnt be surprised if you sit there and demand everyone give you things on the spot all the time.

          • Super Marsupial

On the spot? He was already on stage with everyone looking. I’ve got a problem with him being such a prissy little princess, what you are you are accusing me of.
Remember. HE wants us to buy his music. He just lost a lot of customers.

      • Jim Trebowski

Tell that to the “American Spring” folks who stood in a little circle to sing the anthem, only to strike up a tentative version of “America the Beautiful” by mistake.

  • Super Marsupial

Ditch the douche for lesser known bands who would appreciate the publicity.

  • sj0flr

Head over to his Twitter page. He’s posted a video wherein he mans up and owns it 100%. Rare when you see a celeb put out such a straight forward and heartfelt apology, with no excuses or BS. Just sayin’.

  • Carolanne

He was clearly caught off guard and unprepared. In watching him for many years, he is patriotic and caring. I took it as he turned it over to them. Not as a diss!

  • Perso Nasplit

as a vet, Im not offended he wouldnt pay another song on live tv that he didnt plan(or memorize words to). Anybody crying he reacted the way he did, walk a mile in HIS shoes. Get up on stage, and on the spot, think up a “patriotic song”. Until then, have some respect for someone who took the time to play at all, and entertained MANY vets that day, and COUNTLESS vets in the past.

Ah yes the good ol’ you aren’t patriotic enough game is back. Cry babies.
It’s immature to think that he should go off-clock to sing a song he wasn’t asked or prepared to sing. Why? Because if he does and messes up a lyric (yes a single lyric) the same people crying because he wouldn’t sing would make it viral that he is some unpatriotic pansy-ass who doesn’t know every single lyric of every single patriotic song ever.

That said, not a fan of his and wouldn’t want to sit through another song of his.

    • madoc55

Well, he could have whistled, “Dixie”. Ain’t that hard to do.

      • Mr.Conservative

  • jkbtazman

He did make an apology though Fox should of never of put him on the spot in the first place .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhV9k3gO87s

  • Gmama

He handled this poorly but the hosts should not have put him on the spot, he would have had to sing and play a song he had not rehearsed with his band, and it would have been televised. We have all said something awkward that could be seen as inappropriate when put on the spot.

  • sgt_joe_rock

He apologized and it’s all good. The prez could learn from this man. We all fuck up once or twice

Those veterans were also “off the clock” when they invaded Europe and fought elsewhere in the world. He made a bad career decision.

So many people care about what one singer said? I wish more people would care about how the President is shredding our republic and destroying our military. How his administration constantly lies to the American people. There are so many things to be upset by and everyone gets their panties in a wad because a singer didn’t want to perform another song.

    • Mr.Conservative

Don it’s not what the SOB said that has the outrage going it’s the bastard disrespect for our service men/women. I guess maybe you feel the same way or you would have your panties in such a wad because someone bad mouthed the idiot.

      • Don

I actually served in the Navy and I am extremely conservative. I just don’t feel the need to hang on every “celebrities” word or actions. And I don’t feel disrespected by him because he refused to sing a song. Get a life would be my suggestion to you.

        • Mr.Conservative

Don thanks for the suggestion but I actually have a life. I also was in the Navy and I “WAS” offended and I was offended on behalf of my dad who went through WWII and grand dad WWI. Any true professional would have known a patriotic and would have sung it if they cared as much for the military men/women as he says he does.

I don’t think he has anything to apologize for. Maybe if they would have prepped him about singing something patriotic he would have been ready to blow it away. I think they put him on the spot and he didn’t want to screw up some patriotic song and look like an ass. He did the right thing bowing out instead of screwing something up. I have more respect for him bowing out instead of messing something up. I would be surprised to find many Americans today that can spit the lyrics out to The Pledge of Allegiance let alone any patriotic song. 21 Year Retired Army Combat Vet………

  • Mr_Wrestling_XIII

I’m not a fan of his music, but the reaction was uncalled for. The show should’ve asked him before hand if he can do a patriotic song, so he can prepare. He seems like an alright guy when he was in Idol.

  • fedupwithlibs

he apologized and i beleive he meant it. we all screw up and sometimes either take things or say things out of context.

  • praymorenow1

Dumb classless move on his part.
Dumb move on hosts if they ‘sprang’ this on him on live tv….
Stick to the script I guess.
However, they said to sing it w/ the audience, join in….lead the song…they didn’t ask him to sing solo or get the band out there……it was not a big deal, he could have faked the whole thing.
He comes across as a jerk for the ‘off the clock’ comment…. D Day or not…..
Hopefully, he realizes he should just admit the mistake & do better next time.
