Earlier today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of equality:

Via HotAir:

What government enacts, it can repeal, says the Supreme Court in upholding the Michigan referendum that ended affirmative action in college admissions. In a stunning 6-2 decision, Justice Steven Breyer joined the conservative jurists in ruling that while the Constitution allows states to use affirmative action for admissions, it does not require states to do so:

The justices said in a 6-2 ruling Tuesday that Michigan voters had the right to change their state constitution to prohibit public colleges and universities from taking account of race in admissions decisions. The justices say that a lower federal court was wrong to set aside the change as discriminatory.

For a long time, we’ve known that the concept of judging people on their merits rather than their race doesn’t sit well with the Democrats. Today is no exception:

While the Dems were busy whining and wallowing, others hailed the ruling as a victory against blatantly discriminatory policy:

Jennifer Gratz, lead plaintiff in a 2003 SCOTUS case challenging affirmative action at the University of Michigan and co-founder of the XIV Foundation, applauded the decision:

Amen to that!

American Civil Rights Institute founder Ward Connerly kept his reaction pithy, but meaningful:

Of course NPR quickly glossed over it, trying to hide this “bad news.”

      • mrspinky85

Well, the right has to have an answer for this. They need to get out and go into liberal areas and not run from this. It is policies like the AA that should be offensive to minorities. AA basically tells minorities that they cannot meet the standards so standards have to be lowered and organizations have to be forced to accept you because you cannot do it without AA.
Republicans have got to just STOP writing off people as just “low” informed and go into these communities and show how their ideals and solutions will better our cities.

      • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Once you tell people in the minority communities that it’s strictly a case of window dressing that minorities who would do very well in some college environments are “poached” from those, merely for some school’s optics, resulting in a minority struggling harder at one school than (s)he would at another, to no good purpose, as the retention rate for minorities is less important at these schools than the admission rate, you can tell them that they’re being used spitefully and that they’d best beware.

Do NOT infer from what I have just said that I believe minorities will in the main struggle in universities. I am referring to a specific tranche of students who are recruited by their “reach” schools, who probably would be much better served attending, not so much their “safe” school, as a “why not?” school. In frankness, it is more a question of whether they will finish in four years in one school rather than attend “Harvard”/”Yale” for a year and a half, then bounce over to East Overcoat State College for the remaining time. It is more a matter of whether they can find a “why not” school, with good faculty in something other than a squishy-soft-science major, and carry a really decent GPA, that will determine their employability after graduation. This is no different for white students, either.

  • LinTaylor ✓vitrified

Let me say something that’s going to get a lot of liberal panties in a twist:

If you’re so concerned about “diversity in colleges”, maybe you should be focusing on raising the quality of black Academia, getting young African-Americans to WANT to learn and better themselves, rather than lowering the bar so that the only requirement to get into an Ivy League school is non-pink skin. Just a thought.

    • carmenta

Maybe, they should do away with the ‘traditionally black colleges’ – maybe they should be held to the same standards as everyone else? How is equality possible when ‘special privilege is considered acceptable?

      • dwsmokin

it’s not, but lets’ face it-there are entire cottage industries that survive on encouraging the “victim” mantra. Too much money and power to be acquired through rousing the rabble, rather than admitting the truth. The Jacksons, or Sharptons, the CBC, the NAACP, and the list goes on, cease to exist without the “cause”. Therefore, sad to say, but it will always be there.

      • Maryland_Malcontent

I never understood how “traditionally black” colleges were allowed to exist today. Especially when the ones near me, Coppin and Morgan State, perpetually pump out underachievers and are caught up in corruption.

Bowie State University is another “black” college here and it received national unbiased news coverage about how obamacare forced it to drop its student healthcare plans. I thought that it might become a bastion of blacks who see past the skin color of obama as a result but as far as I know it has not. The obamamania is as strong as ever there.

That’s considered “acting white” and completely unacceptable.

      • LinTaylor ✓vitrified

Which is just a perfect example of the Left’s hypocrisy regarding race relations. They accuse conservatives of hating blacks and trying to keep them down, then turn around and tell young black men and women that being intellectual is “white” and that they only way they can succeed in life is if someone gives them a hand up.

I can’t wait until Affirmative Action goes away. This law makes it look like blacks can’t achieve on their own merit but need a help up. Or those blacks who do make it only did so through Affirmative Action. I am close to finishing my degree and I can tell you my race had nothing to do with the work I do at school.
There are already laws on the books against discrimination. No organization should get extra benefits for selecting certain people over others based on physical characteristics.

    • Maryland_Malcontent

You can tell us that but, like you say, as long as Affirmative Action exists there will always be that nagging question. I have yet to encounter a black person who was not immensely aided by Affirmative Action, to the point of race covering for a severe lack of merit.

There may be Allen West analogues here but I haven’t found ’em, and not for lack of trying or exposure.

      • mrspinky85

This is my point and it make me so mad. No matter what I do today, it will be seen as a hand up because of my race or gender. But, somehow Goldie Taylor still feels we aren’t free. I don’t want Affirmative Action because I want my work to be valued as it is not because of this law.

Since you brought it up, curious to hear how your experience has been on campus, given your more conservative leanings. Do you sometimes feel the need to not say what is on your mind, or do you find that you are able to speak more freely with classmates, professors, etc? • Maryland_Malcontent

If only my public and putative private (The state/feds has many private schools here enthralled) colleges didn’t follow Affirmative Action. If only.

I attended a college in a majority black area, the wealthiest one in the nation (it’s a ghetto, FYI). I had to demonstrate merit to get in and I had to pay my own way, yet I was a minority. Where was my affirmative action? :(

    • mrspinky85

So, do you want to get special treatment or do you want equal treatment.
      This is the problem.

If we do away with the race and gender preferences people can be judged on the same standards. We can’t say, “Well they have special privileges where are mine”. This is how we ended up in this mess in the first place.

      • Maryland_Malcontent

In a school loaded with AAers, in not getting AA I was the one who was getting special treatment. Equal treatment would have been getting all the perks :)

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

So, the Supreme Court is crippling opportunity by making it so someone can’t be discriminated against because of whatever twisted version of equality liberals have chosen to practice?

That’s the same kind of logic that went into Obamacare.

  • j p✓ʳᵉᶠʳᶦᵉᵈ

I would think that a minority that previously was given a lower bar to enter college would be glad to know that an employer wouldn’t consider that your degree is not equal to that of someone who got through without affirmative action.
How do we get rid of discrimination while having discrimination written into the law?

  • Maryland_Malcontent

I wish that I had experienced what “black culture” was like before LBJ and the Democrats turned into into a society of utter dependence upon Big Government, a society that is like a crab bucket: anyone who tries to escape from the pit is pulled back by his fellow captives.

I’ve heard the tales of black neighborhoods not being slums and of a time where black people by and large aspired to something in order to prove that they were on par with the other races. But I haven’t seen it.

I wonder if it ever really did exist. :(

    • mrspinky85

I wish I could experience a time where people can be judge by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
Where I could live in a neighborhood and not be viewed as a token because of my finances or political views? Where I don’t have to correct people when they forget to say “some” before they say something about blacks?

You know you can leave Maryland if you want.

      • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

Generalizations in general are a HUGE problem. Part of why we are so divided today. “Some” needs to be added to a lot of people’s vocabulary.

      • Maryland_Malcontent

Not at this juncture I cannot.

I haven’t heard of a real place that lives up to the legends of the pre-LBJ times.

    • Spinmamma

It did. My sister did a huge study when she was working on her PhD and interviewed many elderly African American residents of Phoenix, AZ. They told her about the newspapers, theatre, businesses, and schools in the African American community in the 20’s, 30’s and even early 40’s. It all went so horribly wrong.

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Here was what happened at a small liberal-arts college (accent on ‘liberal”) when, as part of Diversity Day (a day for no classes and celebrations on campus), one of the students boldly decided to show diversity of thought and questioned what the good of diversity was, other than merely for its own sake– apparently he really sought answers and wasn’t being rhetorical, but that sure as $#!t ain’t the way all the pressure groups on campus saw it:

  • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

So making sure that colleges have true equality is pushing inequality according to the race-baiting gutter trash? Not a shock.

How is giving preferential treatment to specific races “equal.”? Can any lib answer that?

All of the moaners are actually saying minorities are less intelligent than whites. You live by race, you die by race.

Conservatives promote the individual, and Democrats promote groups. Deal with it, Melissa Perry.

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Look, all I know for sure in life is that I’ve met and dealt with many intelligent black people and not just a small few really dumb-ass white people. It never occurred to me to total them up to see how many more or less they proportionally represent of their own respective ethno-racial entity than the other kind within their own, or the corresponding proportion in the other entity. Once you start in with the “there are numerous notable exceptions, but the general rule is…” mantra when you’re dealing with individual human beings, the conversation is goin’ straight to hell from there.

  • https://youtu.be/h82D5ZvcALM CrustyB

The Democrats would have us believe that minorities are just as capable as white men and that they need special treatment because they are not as capable as white men and if that doesn’t make any reasonable sense then racism.

Time to be judged by your inside and not your outside.

  • LegalizeShemp

And thank you to Ward Connerly for unwaveringly supporting Prop 209 in CA, despite the racially despicable attacks from the gripe groups on the left.

  • LegalizeShemp

Remember, the core basis of liberalism is pathological narcissism. Liberals are insecure, self centered little twerps who need victims, real or imagined, to bring them grievances. Liberals then make excuses and petition government on behalf of the “victims” to attempt to secure financial and other rewards for them. Liberals can then strut around feeling like Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, congratulating themselves on how they afflicted the comfortable, and comforted the afflicted. It strokes their already massive egos even more.

Obamacare will only have affirmative action Doctors, there we made it fair.

Here in Michigan we judge people by their character, not their color.

  • waterytart

Here’s a shocker, white kids from middle class families here in Michigan have dreams too. And they follow the rules, study hard, work to be good citizens, and still many times are not “good enough” (read the wrong color) to be accepted to UofM. That’s discrimination people.

  • http://www.FunDMental.com TheRealJackpineSavage

Don’t forget folks, it wasn’t the MI legislature that passed the Mich Civil Rights Initiative, it was a Public referendum. The People literally spoke against AA, and Scotus agrees.

    It’s a good day to be a Michigander. :o)

  • ked5

I guess we don’t have to be told who voted against. Kegan and Sotomayor. They’re all about bowow’s agenda and nothing about constitutional law.

    • JP

Ginsburg and Sotomayor. Kagan recused because of her work on the case while it was working its way up the chain before she joined the Court.

  • aztectrumpet

Not allowing unequal treatment is diecriminatory- liberal logic.

    • aztectrumpet

or not allowing discrimination is discriminatory.

  • Jake Bradford

I follow a few libs on twitter and it looks like prog heads are exploding over this.

  • Ms. Abigail van Beagle

Well, if you want to get into college, you better haul ass and get the grades and pass the admission tests and write the best essays if you know that your skin color alone won’t get you in. It’s sad that people are still insisting that African-Americans aren’t smart enough to get into college on their own. And if they really think that colleges look at applicants and weed out the non-white ones, they are completely delusional. If you want in, be the best.

  • BoSplosion

Gotta love that liberal logic: treating people equally without regard to skin color is a “blow to civil rights.”

  • Danny Wheeler

Two thumbs way way up to the SCOTUS!

  • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

It’s super racist to expect black people to have to earn their way into college the way we expect white people to. – liberal logic

Black people can’t achieve anything without our help, but that’s totes not racist – liberal logic

Something tells me that, in Michigan, “the assurance of diversity in schools” isn’t good for their academic rankings and standing; that affirmative action was harming the school more than it was helping its “disadvantaged” students.

  • WhoDat

I do hope the next time a Minority is denied admission, when White students with identical credentials get admitted, they will sue.

    • ReadingforComprehension

      On what grounds?

    • Memphis Viking

You mean as opposed to the countless times white students have been denied admission in favor or minority students with inferior credentials?

Affirmative Action – the soft bigotry of low expectations.

  • jetch

leftists don’t care that minorities aren’t learning in grade school, can’t get jobs, or killing each other in the streets. they just want minorities put at the front of the line for a college most aren’t prepared for. how sad!

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” MLK JR.

Where did content of their character fit within Affirmative Action? Answer it doesn’t –

  • CountMahdrof

This is great news (for a change). If only affirmative racism could be eliminated from ALL aspects of life. A side benefit is that this shows Breyer still has at least a smidgeon (maybe a scintilla) of integrity.

  • PRM

It’s high time for the reverse discrimination to stop. Favoring one group over another because of race is just as bad as what the liberals are so vocal about.

  • Independentview

“This refusal to accept the stark reality that race matters is regrettable.”

    Sotomayor in her dissent opinion.
Race and color of skin matter only to Progressive racists. Everyone else does not care what your skin color is.

    • Memphis Viking

  • Pilgrim22

I’m not a person of color, but if I was, I would resent the heck out of the government thinking I wasn’t capable of earning my own way in life. Yes, there’s still some individual racism, don’t deny that, but I doubt that it exists far and wide with the admissions boards at colleges and universities.

    • Perry

There is racism out there, and most of it is coming from Blacks.

    • DanielSFL

Its a racism of low expectations. I would be pissed if someone thought I couldn’t succeed or get ahead because i was black or brown, and that I needed a handout. Would sound like I was inferior. Its this weird liberal logic, where making minorities more equal than whites is equality. Liberals are mentally stunted.

    • CAPollyAnna

As a woman, I know damn well, I resent them thinking women aren’t capable without help. Anyone with ability and self-respect would resent it!! Nor do I appreciate them marching out the “War on Women” again, just in time for the mid-term elections. Hopefully, all of the pigeon-holed groups will see through this ploy.

  • TDS

It’s sad that Liberals think that electing a completely unqualified President based mainly on the color of his skin IS the realization of MLK’s Dream, but then turn around and cry about how that the Dream is going to be lost if colleges are finally able to accept candidates based on their abilities instead of having quotas based on the color of the applicants’ skin…

  • LloydTheDuck

You’re not an equality proponent unless you support banning preference for the children of alumni in college admissions, aka legacy admissions. A Kennedy or Bush with Down Syndrome would get into Harvard or Yale, respectively, as it stands.

  • captaingrumpy

I wish Australia had that view. In parts of Australia the Gov pays Black kids $10 cash for turning up at school. They leave at lunchtime , buy petrol , fags or alcohol and the white kids get nothing but a Liberal Teacher.

  • TimboT
