Looks like you get to keep your money, Jon.

Well, kids, were we right, or were we right?

Oy vey.

Yeah, he did:

Via Politico:

Responding to the decision, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) invoked his favorite boogeymen: the Koch brothers.

“The Supreme Court today just accentuated what they did on Citizens United, which is a decision that is one of the worst decisions in the history of that court,” Reid said during a press conference on raising the minimum wage. “All it does is take away people’s rights because, as you know, the Koch brothers are trying to buy America.”

Also:

Alrighty then.

Might be time for an intervention …

      • WhoDat

“Where money calls the tune, those ideas, representing the voices of the people, will not be heard.” – Justice Breyer

        • Zach Smith

Pretty naive thinking. It takes money to campaign. Incumbents, and the status quo in general, already have a huge advantage and they work constantly to accentuate that advantage. Limiting the ability of others to get their message across only makes matters worse.

          • WhoDat

I get what you’re saying, but I believe it will only make it easier for those with excess money to give will still give to those incumbents and continue to buy them off.

How many working citizens have that kind of money to donate? You’d almost need to kiss the behind of millionaires to get elected.

          • Ghee!

The millionaires still have to be willing to give it though. You have to have money to spend it, no campaign gets off the ground without donations. If you can find some big donors to help you get started then you can go after the smaller ones with that in place.

          • WhoDat

And you don’t believe those big money donors will expect a vote in their favor when you get elected?

Or is that still supposedly illegal?

          • Ghee!

I work on campaigns. I vette candidates. I don’t work with that kind of corruption. It happens, but to presume that it happens with all of them is just not factual.

          • Ghee!

Reid has been bought and paid for by the Las Vegas unions. He is a multi-millionaire just from being a politician. His is the cream of the crop example of payoffs.

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Having taken donations from some wealthy individuals in a campaign, I found that they were not seeking to buy my vote. Never even spoke to them. They seemed just to want my opponent out of there.

(And all their contributions still put me out moneyed by 4:1)

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

The average amount of those big money donors works out to less than $10 per voter. You can outspend them 5 to 1 by giving $50 to the candidate of your choice. This is a partisan issue where big money contributions to Democrats are ignored, as they target the sources of Republican contributions.

          • Zach Smith

Money is much more important to opponents than incumbents. Much of the money that goes to incumbents is subtle protection money, because businesses are afraid that if they support the wrong candidate, their industry, or even their specific company will be punished legislatively.

        • Arkuy The Great

That is definitely proving to be true with the Democrats and environmental causes. Their biggest donors are Keystone XL opponents. However, a decisive majority of registered Democrat voters want the pipe built (something like 50% for vs 35% against in a Pew poll).

      • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Why is it that I agree with WhoDat more often when he is being sarcastic than when he is not?

        • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

On this issue…I’d say it’s because, if I’m understanding his argument correctly, and correct me if I’m wrong WhoDat, he doesn’t agree with either side being able to “buy” elections.

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Yes, but it is awesome that there is more money in our political process. More money means more debate, more information hence better voting. When he is trying to be sarcastic, he tends to hit upon the truth.

          • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

I get this side of the argument too. And honestly I don’t have an opinion on the issue as to whether or not to cap anything, other than what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and to demonize one and not the other is stupid for anyone.

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

My opinion is cap everything or cap nothing. There is no cap on “issue advocacy” by unions. There is no limit on slanted “news” coverage by the major media. This ruling does nothing but allow people to support their candidates with their own money, as opposed to those who are already allowed to support their candidates with other people’s money.

          • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

            Exactly.

          • Zach Smith

Limits on money in campaigns always benefit incumbents because they have many advantages that do not require money, such as free media exposure and name recognition, as well as grateful interest groups who have benefited from their legislative largess (to put it charitably).

          • http://www.freedomreconnection.com/ FreedomRecon

If I dig deep, my opinion would be to cap nothing, but at the same time, any bill or law introduced and voted on would have to stand or fall on it’s own. Then we would know exactly who voted for or against something. No more of this Sandy relief type bill with all sorts of extras thrown in.

    • Minarchism Leads To Freedom

Indeed. People should be able to spend their money anyway they see fit.
