Twitter is buzzing this morning over an Arizona CBS reporter’s recent “off-the-record” interview with Jay Carney. Specifically, Catherine Anaya’s claim that Carney told her that that “a lot of times,” he gets the White House press corps’ questions in advance of the daily briefing:

Inquisitive tweeters turned to former ABC White House correspondent Jake Tapper for insight:

Tapper went on the record about his own experience:

Fox News chief White House correspondent Ed Henry echoes Tapper:

According to the Daily Mail, Anaya has apologized for her earlier report, saying that she was asked to submit a question for Carney ahead of time:

“As a local journalist I had no issue providing my proposed question in advance,’ she told MailOnline, ‘because I wanted to make sure it was an appropriate q[uestion] for a national briefing and I wanted to make sure it was appropriate for Mr. Carney.”

“[B]ut in discussing it with a staff member the night before, we decided I would save it for the president. I was attempting to not waste national time on a local question, but in my attempt at explaining that I unintentionally made it sound like that experience applied to everyone.”

“That is my mistake,’ Anaya added, ‘and I own up to it.”

In another twist, the Daily Mail reports that Anaya’s network, KPHO-TV, posted a statement on the matter — and pulled it shortly thereafter:

  • Lord Foggybottom

Tapper is playing along because he doesn’t want his house bugged.

    • conservativechick

I believe her and think Carney knows most of the questions ahead of time. Notice the Fox Reporter isn’t in on the “prescreened questions.” They would never want that info out there. Looks like they got “outed.”

    • CobraJet428

William F. Buckley called it, “The greatest movie I’ve ever seen.”

      • Booker

That was a really good film.

      • Rex

That most amazing film I agree.

  • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Be honest– would Jake Tapper tell you so, if he DID submit questions to Carney ahead of time? He’s still gotta work there– such unexpected candor would cause his employers to remove him from that beat, lest he and they be shunned.

And I’m telling you right now– if this story has any grain of truth to it, Carney’s name is an unusually apt one, wouldn’t you say?

    • Ghee!

    • j p✓ʳᵉᶠʳᶦᵉᵈ

Just what I was thinking. Never trust a Carney. The game is rigged.

      • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

The great apocryphal story about Al Capone telling why he wasn’t investing in the stock market: “It’s a fixed game. I don’t play fixed games, unless I’m the one doing the fixing.”

    • kssturgis62

I am constantly told that Jake Tapper is one of the Good Guys,. Can’t give him a hard time. he wrote an article he claims as defense of Sarah Palin way back when she ran with McCain, I called him out on what ABC did, and he said I defended her, I said with ONE article no one read. I had people attack me on Twitter saying back off he is a good guy.

then he posted another article about Obamacare, way back from 2009 or 2010. I said to him it is great you are speaking up now. He said that was my article I wrote, I said I KNOW, but you have said nothing. Again because he wrote one article yelled at and told to back off he is one of the Good guys.

Jake Tapper, is at the Communist News Network. He worked for the All Barack Channel. He supported and loved Clintons’ man Georgie Porgie. I don’t buy a word of Jake Tappers. I don’t trust him, and he is a progressive liberal.

      • FirstBoot

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have no idea why people say he is one of the good guys. He’s just like the rest of the MSM, just not as rabid. He does one critical story, after the fact, just so he can say he covered both sides of the subject. He is no Sharyl Attkisson. Now, he may be holding back because he wants to keep his access, but that does not bode well for his journalistic integrity or credibility. Period.

        • kssturgis62

Thank you !!! You stated that so perfectly!!! You are so right he is NO Attkisson.

  • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Perfect conspiracy, they wouldn’t admit it if it were true and they would certainly deny it if it were false. This is a type 1 stupid question (a question for which there is only one right answer).

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

“So, Congressman Grayson– are you still beating your wife?”

      • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

That would by a type 2 stupid question (a question for which there is no right answer).

        • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

What I meant was that in his case, there actually IS an answer, as opposed to its being the archetype “fraught question.”

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

But there are not really two options. I devised this nomenclature when I was 6. There are two types of stupid questions. Never answer a stupid question. Never believe teachers when they tell you there is no such thing as a stupid question.

      • nickdqwk

        Define still!

“She blinked at me, so she was clearly asking for it.”

He would if he could get his dissolved oxygen levels higher.

  • Ghee!

I long ago quit taking any reporters words as truth or fact. Given the carnage that is the American media machine I’m more inclined to believe there is truth to this especially with this administration.

  • nickdqwk

Lois Lerner did not get 5th amendment advise before (not) testifying to congress, period.

  • Perry

The coordination between the MSM and this admin is despicable. That whole Issa / Cummings incident was staged so the MSM didn’t have to report on the IRS scandal.

  • CLEmom

So Ed Henry and Jake Tapper are ethical, responsible journalists.
What about NBC/CBS (Attkisson gone)/ABC/PBS/NPR/MSNBC…I’m sure this happens between at least a few of them.
If not, their questions are laughably softball anyway, so what difference does it make?

    • Perry

If they’re unethical enough to do it in the first place, lying about not doing it wouldn’t bother them either.

      • Perry

LOL! I tweeted Tapper that and he tweeted this back:

        Jake Tapper [email protected] 5m

@BAMAPERRY @zenpundit excellent and brilliant point. just like you lying about having several corpses in your cellar.

        • ejochs

Right, and Journolist never actually existed.

      • TugboatPhil

And there was the “Journ-O-List” deal a few years back. Since they hardly reported the story, I doubt they disbanded it.

        • Perry

Yeah. These “journalists” don’t take people at their word. Why should we take them at their word?

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Anybody remember Ezra Klein and JournoList (i.e., the “co-ordinating of questions” and how any WH press office staffer worth his/her salt who could have been able to obtain the “double-secret” decoder ring password would have been able to tell in advance what the questions were likely to be in a greater specific and answer accordingly, better than simply anticipating the general subject matter and having general answers)?

  • Jimni27

Interesting that only Tapper and Henry are responding to these allegations. Out of the loop?

  • Steve__Jacobson

Tapper and Henry can only say the report is incorrect with regard to themselves. They can’t say the reporter is completely wrong.

  • GW

The story is dead wrong. Jay Carney does not receive questions from the reporters beforehand. He GIVES the questions TO the reporters beforehand.

    • TugboatPhil

Great point! As to being as staged as Pro Rasslin, I disagree. At least with Pro Rasslin, WE don’t know who the winner will be every time.

  • JeffWRidge

I have no doubt that some “journalists,” let’s say collaborate, with the White House (think MSNBC, CBS, CNN, etc), but not all reporters. The reporters who are in the tank for Obama and the Democrats are pretty obvious to anyone paying attention.

  • ejochs

Uh, have Tapper and Henry heard of a thing called Journolist, where “journalists” got together to plot how to help Obama? Why, no such thing could happen, right.

  • forgetyoutooo

I saw a tape of Helen Thomas telling Robert Gibbs she was aware that reporters were called the night before and questions were arranged. I’d be really surprised if Ed Henry EVER received one of those late night calls from this administration.

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Well, of course the Wicked Witch could get away with saying something like that. Everyone thought she was an old crackpot anyway. Gibbs could tell her he was doing it, she could announce it to the world, and STILL, nobody would bat an eye.

  • Acethepug

You know, I would love to scoff and say of COURSE this cannot happen.

But this is the Obama Administration we are talking about; the most corrupt, morally bankrupt, dishonest Administration in American History.

Even when the truth would be smarter, even when the truth would cause no political pain, these people lie. It’s reflex to them, like breathing.
I have no problem believing that they do this.

  • tommcgtx

    No more donuts for YOU!!!!!

  • Lotte Lenya

Besides the obvious – who trusts anything this administration says – there’s two takeaways here: one is that this newsreader from Arizona doesn’t know what “off the record means” and two, she’s done in news no matter how this falls out.

  • Dave Turson

A guy will most often spill the beans to a pretty gal. A journalistic honey trap, all the way.

  • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

I’d believe the Undertaker was an actual deadman with the powers of the underworld before I believe a word coming out of the Obama administration.

  • CobraJet428

I’ve noticed for a couple of years where Baghdad Carney gets a somewhat off-the-wall question but, somehow, just glances down to a prepared response.
This is what a coup looks like.

  • pinkelephant22

Tapper, Henry, and a few others might not because they have more integrity. That’s not to say that others aren’t doing it. In fact, I’d bet money on it. Didn’t MSNBC admit they got talking points from the White House?

    • © Sponge

Methinks those denouncing the report are sitting there with their fingers in their ears screaming “LALALALALALALALALALALALA!”

Much like the plants in the “town halls” Owebama put on, there’s little doubt that some media are merely talking heads of the administration.

      • pinkelephant22

I don’t know. I think Tapper and Henry wouldn’t be so direct & bold that it was a false story if that were the case. I trust Henry, ..and Tapper has more integrity than most anyone else in the MSM.

        • © Sponge

Won’t argue, but I’m thinking that they’ve just not been approached to become shills because they’ve shown not to be the “tote that barge, lift that bale” members of the press. Just because they’ve not been asked to be a part doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

          • pinkelephant22

Right. That’s why in my original comment, I posted:

“That’s not to say that others aren’t doing it. In fact, I’d bet money on it. Didn’t MSNBC admit they got talking points from the White House?”

          • © Sponge

Yes, well, that would require me to actually read your post before commenting…. 8^)

            It’s been a long day……..

    • ejochs

Bubbles was reading them onto the air from her blackberry. Naah, she would never feed her questions to the WH.

  • iconoclast

Jake Tapper’s credibility is very high. If he says he doesn’t do it AND the way Jay Carney fumbles his responses to Tapper means to me that it seems unlikely Tapper is playing that game. Need more proof.

After all, do they really need to submit the questions to Carney? Just by reading their morning DNC or White House press release subservient reporters can adjust their questions accordingly. It doesn’t take an explicit conspiracy to enable collusion…just like with voter fraud.

  • ceemack

The difference between professional wrestling and a White House press conference?

The wrestling match manages to generate some suspense about the outcome. With this White House, there are no surprises.

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

For crying out loud, Carney gets questions in advance and still does a piss-poor job?

  • arttie

I would believe the MSM gives Carney the answers in advance.

  • H50 ✓RAT

It wouldn’t surprise me if some reporters did in fact submit their questions in advance in the hopes of getting called on for a change. Carney has his little seating chart there on the podium and has shown favoritism/snubbing on many occasions.
Not really confidence inducing that only 2 out of 49 WHPC reporters have adamantly denied that they have ever submitted questions beforehand tho.

  • Jeffrey Rogers

HEY TOE TAPPER…..Then how come we NEVER hear you ask that little troll any REAL questions? How about asking him why this ADMIN continues to disobey court orders and FOIA request?

  • Doc Farmer ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

RUSH: “They’re gonna hold her career in the balance here, ’cause they can’t allow this to stand, that they submit their questions in advance and that Carney then picks the one he wants, and that they get their answers in advance. They can’t let this stand, even if it is true.”

  • Lori Blaney

I’ve lost all faith in our press. Duhhh!

  • Peyton

Maybe he said he wishes they were submitted ahead of time so he doesn’t look like such a buffoon.

  • Cabover_Country

I’ll “see” your carney Mr. Journ0 & “raise” you a Joe Wilson

  • Guest

No one with a brain believes a word Carney says, every time he opens his mouth and obfuscates the misadministration loses credibility.

  • Rex

This President has had multiple staged Townhall events, orchestrated press conferences, prepared planted questions and now the Press Secretary goes and does the same and you’re surprised by this?

  • Harold Janson

Look, you can either play along with the faked breifings, or you can have your access cut off, either directly or by being ignored. Either way, you either play ball or are looking for a new job…. and causing a fuss about it will get your organization locked out as well. Oh gee, wasn’t this obvious to everyone from the get go?

    • anitahandle

“…… or you can have your access cut off..”
      OR SOMETHING ELSE, Harold!!

  • Kristine ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Sheesh. I’m here in Arizona and I didn’t know about this.

But then again, I don’t watch that particular station’s news.

  • The 57th State© ℅EF™

His answers suck so bad, if he’s getting the questions in advance, he ought to drown himself.

  • bambubi1

Carney should call his press briefings “Obama and Friends”.

    • Ice Cold Troll

      “We’re a happy family!”

  • Ice Cold Troll

So have they confirmed the retraction of the denial, or denied the confirmation of the retraction?
