Well, this is awkward.

This morning, Judge Steven Rhodes ruled that Detroit is insolvent and eligible for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. The news prompted tweeter John Ekdahl to take a stroll down Memory Lane, where he dug up these Team Obama gems from 2012:

Gotta love all those incorrect promises.

      Who woulda thunk?

    • Ariadnea

Nah, you all have just misunderstood what he really meant! It was his intention to have said; ‘We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt…before the election. It’s just those darn teleprompters, they forgot to display the last portion of my speech. It must have been Romney or his ilks who sabotaged my teleprompter at that important time’.

  • JeromeD

White lies are necessary sometimes; You can’t tell children (in this case, the American electorate) that santa isn’t real. Especially when Santa is campaigning to give presents to all the good girls and boys.

Where’s good ole’ Baghdad Bob when you need him?
“Anyone reporting Detroit as “bankrupt” is a liar and a racist. It’s alive and well! The Auto Union will crush the city bankruptcy planners!”

    • ObamaFail

Don’t you love it when libs accuse us of racism for merely stating the facts?

  • Republicanvet

Of course the bet paid off. They bet on telling a lie, and enough nitwits believing it to vote for Preezy Omugabe.

    • ObamaFail

And now this year the people of Detroit are desperate to blame everyone but Obama and the Democrats. Democrat policies bankrupted Detroit to begin with.

      • Republicanvet

I’m waiting for some prog to comment that some Republican caused the whole mess by standing in the way of the auto bailout, or cash for clunkers scam.

If only more money was spent faster?

Why did the UAW let Detroit go bankrupt anyway? They were given so much in the bailouts and control of auto companies. Why didn’t they spread the wealth?

Delphi employees are unavailable for comment.

        • ObamaFail

I think that some libs have already blamed Detroit on the Republicans. Although, they resorted to personal attacks when people pointed out that Democrats have run Detroit for the last 50 years.

          • nc ✓s & balances

They always have the “rooting for failure” thing to fall back on.

Delphi employees and the GM bondholders are all broken up about this I am sure ….

  • ObamaFail

Obama said last year that Mitt Romney wanted to let Detroit go bankrupt. This year Obama let’s Detroit go bankrupt.

Last year Biden and Obama said that Mitt Romney wanted to go to war with Syria. This year Obama was trying to put us in a war with Syria.

Hey Barry, were you accusing Mitt Romney of things that YOU wanted to do?

    • NotBuyingIt

Hasn’t that been the Dem game plan since 0 was elected?

    • MNWoman

Well the sheeple will always think just because Obama said something it must be true. He could say there really are 57 states and they would take is as a fact.

      • ObamaFail

Just like how they believed the “if you like your insurance you can keep your insurance PERIOD” lie, and then when they realized it was a lie they were too gutless to admit it so they claimed he “misspoke.”

      • Joe W.

Wait a minute..You mean there are NOT 57 states?? But Barack said there were……And all this time, I thought it was just me……

  • Arkuy The Great

As much as I would love to join in on this rag-on-Big-O thread I recall the “let Detroit go bankrupt” statements as referring to the Big 3 automakers, not the city. Let’s keep the references in their correct context.

Of course that GM and Chrysler did, in fact, go through BK (albeit somewhat modified per political expediencies) has already impeached that claim.

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

But much of the reason Detroit-the-municipality went into the death spiral it did was due to Detroit-the-metonym, and Detroit-the-municipality, without the auto industry, had better just close up shop and die– it has nothing else. So helping the metonym WAS an attempt to help the city stave off the inevitable.

Nice try, though– THEY knew what they meant to do, under the guise of helping the auto industry. Do you?

      • Arkuy The Great

Assuming that analysis is true (and I don’t doubt it) then the city’s death spiral was basically a done deal when the Packard plant closed in the 1950s. Those were the last cars actually built within the city limits.

As far as the plan of saving GM and Chrysler went I don’t think Team O even had the slightest idea what they were supposed to accomplish. Saving the unions and their pensions, though a nice outcome from their perspective, was not the ultimate goal.

        • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Not that the cars themselves were produced within the city limits, but that the money from paychecks from the factories outside the city limits was spent by Detroiters within the city limits of Detroit, thus bolstering its economy.

    • Joe W.

I never drove a “Detroit”. Have you? So Obamster “mis-spoke”?? Again?? All this time I thought he was the “silver tongued devil” or something like that. My bad.

    • H50 ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

That’s the trouble of talking in sound bites. They come back to bite you when your trying to be vague enough to please everyone.

Besides, we all know that the financial stability of any city is directly tied to its support industries.
So whether you look at the city going bankrupt or the car companies going bankrupt, its a symbiotic relationship. You go, we go.

  • Maxx

What a non shocker. Obama gets elected and Detroit files bankruptcy anyway.

Obama and his entire administration is bankrupt. Morally, fiscally, intellectually…the list increases daily…sort of like the list of independents and young voters who wished they had voted for Romney.

  • ObamaFail

Anyone else notice that the Liberal Media was attacking Romney over Biden and Obama’s claims that Romney wanted to let Detroit go bankrupt, but now they have no issue with it anymore since Obama let it bankrupt?

    • nc ✓s & balances

Shhh…you don’t want to upset them, do you?

      • no_more_deceit

Ha, no big, the media has been in a liberal coma for decades, they won’t hear you.

  • conservative2012

I feel bad I obviously helped Detroit go bankrupt by voting for Romney.

    • JamesMc

There’s a cure for that. Watch “8 Mile” with Eminem until the regret goes away. Normal dosage for adults is 3-5 minutes.

Optional treatment: Watch the first RoboCop. Pat yourself on the back for gifting the city the chance at a dystopia with cool killer robots.

  • no_more_deceit

Listen to the little o, he said “we refused to let Detroit go bankrupt”, he didn’t say he was going to really prevent them from when that day came. Period.

  • Marcy Cook

Next thing they will say is: “Because Romney was “thinking” of letting Detroit go bankrupt his “thought energy” caused it to happen.”

    • nc ✓s & balances

Exactly! Just like Repubs “rooting for failure” caused Obamacare to be such a flaming disaster.

  • lesterwink23

It sounded good at the time, right?

  • Joe W.

“If you like Detroit….You can keep Detroit…”

  • Laconic

Nobody will be more upset than Obama when he reads about this in the papers tomorrow.

We should have another inquiry into why he wasn’t informed correctly that Detroit wasn’t working sooner.

    • nc ✓s & balances

You forgot the “and he won’t rest until he fixes it” part.

  • Chimfish

They talk as if hovering on the brink of bankruptcy is just the natural state that cities are born into.

If you really refuse to let a city go bankrupt, then don’t support the policies that lead it to bankruptcy in the first place.

  • Bryan Ewbank

    Detroit? I didn’t mean Detroit MI. I meant Detroit… um… er… … oh!
Detroit TX… Yeah. That’s the one that I meant. What? You misunderstood me? Well, don’t you look silly now.

  • DutyFirst

Geez Louise – you guys, he meant ‘Detroit’ the car companies not Detroit the city or some such …. nitpicking, bible clinging, gun toting, xenophobes you.

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

Hey now, at least Obama kept his promise about keeping your plan and your doctor if you liked them–period.

    Oh wait…

  • beebop1952

You should check out the article about “pensioners” on Detroit Free Press …. retired at 51, just retired at 59 …. how many of us will EVER quit working and these idiots are bitching about water from a stone. Damn. No wonder Detroit is deserted!
