Sigh. Evidently, David Sirota can’t find a better way to reflect upon yesterday’s devastating tornadoes than to link conservatives and the GOP to the fallout from natural disasters.

This morning, he penned an asinine Salon.com column entitled “Anyone regret slashing National Weather Service budget now?” In it, he attempted — very poorly — to make the case that budget cuts lead to more death and destruction following natural disasters like yesterday’s tornadoes in Oklahoma:

From his column:

As the Federal Times recently reported, sequestration includes an 8.2 percent cut to the National Weather Service. According to the organization representing weather service employees, that means there is “no way for the agency to maintain around-the-clock operations at its 122 forecasting offices” and also means “people are going to be overworked, they’re going to be tired, they’re going to miss warnings.”

When the ideology of austerity and Congress’s manufactured crises like the sequestration collectively jeopardize that infrastructure, we are needlessly inviting unnecessary and tragic consequences.

So, while he’s not actually suggesting that sequestration directly caused yesterday’s deadly storms, Sirota is asserting that bigger government would have saved property and lives.

Bull.

Not only is he disingenuous:

But he’s insulting. And this Oklahoma tweeter gave Sirota the sound thumping he deserved for attempting to politicize the horrific tornadoes:

Hear, hear!

Sirota can spin his wheels to his heart’s content:

But he’s fighting a losing battle against the truth — and decency.

Wouldn’t a manufactured crisis be claiming that a 1.6% Federal budget cut (or any cut for that matter) would be catastrophic? … Un-freakin’ believable… And that is not even taking into account that, if cuts were large enough to endanger his so loved infrastructure the president had the authority to adjust the cuts accordingly (i.e.: more from this area, less from this one).

A co-worker’s husband works at the NWS – as a facility safety monitor. Basically, he flies around the country, making sure that safety officers in each office are implementing safety properly. These are OFFICES, not heavy industry. So he mainly works on ergonomics and preventing paper cuts.

    Seriously, that’s ALL he does.

Isn’t that a good place to start cutting?

    • Republicanvet

He should be cut since he is ignoring part of his job. I know a guy who fixes their electronic equipment, including radars. Those guys count on safety training around high voltage and hazardous travel to remote sites. Some of those guys travel by snow shoe, snowmobiles or snow cats to get to their equipment in all kinds of bad weather in winter, or some pretty remote places in summer. They need the training that he is not providing. Perhaps rather than easily visiting an office looking for paper cuts, he should do his job and look at the jobs those guys do, and find out why their safety training has been cut.
In fact, he told me the guys in Alaska carry guns to remote locations because of bears and other animals. One guy in Hawaii or Guam disappeared at a remote site and has never been found. It is thought he was swept out to sea.

      • https://twitter.com/thehiredmind Hired Mind

“He should be cut since he is ignoring part of his job.”

No, he’s not. Don’t ASSume. I was very clear that he works exclusively in offices. (I really don’t know how I could have been any clearer)

“They need the training that he is not providing.”

Maybe, if he was monitoring safety procedure on heavy equipment such as radars, yes. But again, he doesn’t.

The fact is, his job is superfluous, as are many jobs in the federal government. I’d say – having worked in the IRS for a year and having relatives in other federal jobs – that close to half of the jobs are not necessary.

        • Republicanvet

First, I am not defending Sirota or this guy who can’t do his job.

Second, I talked to my friend again about this, who has worked for the NWS for over 25 years so I think he knows what he is talking about.

You said he was a safety monitor for an office and he flies around the country. That would suggest he works at a regional or higher HQ, which would make sense if he is only looking for paper cuts. He would be clueless about what the electronics guys do…or ignoring them ….which means he is not doing his job of monitoring the safety of everyone.
Again, if that is what he does, and his flying around the country is doubtful given the budget, he should be cut because he is too lazy to do his job…or does not know how to do it.
My friend asked if this guy is doing his job, why it takes 6 months to a year to get safety gear, or why training has been cut.

      • rivers

        • MarcusFenix

I have to admit, Beck has been an absolute class act on those two issues, all the way around. He actually has impressed me somewhat, which doesn’t happen terribly often.

People like this douche-canoe Sirota needs to STFU and GTFO there, to start helping people who need it, instead of trying to make an argument that we need a bigger government. Now isn’t the time to be spewing politics.

I live in OKC and contrary to the beliefs held by many left wing elitist douche bags like David Sirota, Oklahomans are not a bunch uneducated country bumpkins in desperate need of protection from the federal government.

Oklahoma meteorologists have some of the best radar technology in the world. The National Weather Center is located in Norman, OK. The National Severe Storms Laboratory works with our scientists to predict severe weather. The federal government often relies upon Oklahoma for help in that department, rather than the other way around. Sirota is an idiot.

This tornado formed very quickly. In 45 minutes it went from nothing to one of the worst tornadoes in history. Our local weather stations did an amazing job staying on top of it. They knew it was forming before it even touched the ground. They had storm chasers with cameras filming it while it was forming.

There is simply no way anybody could have done a better job keeping us informed than they did. Sirota has no idea what he’s talking about.

Dunno if funding was actually cut, or rate of increase in funding was cut. But the warning time of 16 minutes is well above average. By Sirota’s logic, we should have cut twice as much to improve warning time more.
