After abortionist Kermit Gosnell was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder, Times writer Jon Hurdle just couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge the fact that the babies murdered by Gosnell were, in fact, babies.

Here’s how Hurdle reported the story:

The verdict came after a five-week trial in which the prosecution and the defense battled over whether the fetuses Dr. Gosnell was charged with killing were alive when they were removed from their mothers.

Not babies — “fetuses.” Not murdered — “removed from their mothers.”

Intellectual dishonesty at its worst.

  • IronButterfly

NYT you make me want to puke!

    • angeleyez

Is Obama still a fetus ?

      • TomJB

If he really teared up at today’s press conference, it won’t take much more for him to cry himself to sleep in the fetal position…

      • CatHerder

        No, just fetid.

      • ICOYAR

He is about as competent as one.

      • Clete Torres

        Maturity-wise, yes.

  • stellatruman

I wonder if he thinks using semantics makes Gosnell less of a killer or the babies less dead?
I also wonder if he struggles with his own baby killing ?

    • ElizCM

I think, to NYT, it makes the murdered babies less of a baby… sickening

  • Republicanvet

…as if some cancerous lump were removed…

    • Jeremy

That is how they think about it and yes very sick.

  • BoscoBolt

Well, apparently, even the NYT agrees that there is NO DIFFERENCE between killing a “fetus” and killing a “baby” – if Gosnell was convicted of 1st degree murder for killing “fetuses”, then shouldn’t all abortionists be put on trial as well? Murder is murder, is murder, is murder …

    • DanStlMo

      My thoughts exactly.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Just remember though, according to that undercover video that Lila Grace did, ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ the womb are 2 completely different arenas… if it’s inside, it’s ‘better’…. Excuse me, while I go vomit.

  • Spatial Awareness

Like I’ve said before….. I wouldn’t even use the==> .@NYTimes to pick up DOG SHlT…. It would desecrate THE SHlT. #Gosnell

  • Veronica Caine

I don’t understand. If a person kills (by shooting, car accident, etc) a pregnant woman, that is two counts of murder. But if a person kills just the baby, it’s NOT murder?

    • Will P.

That is why I have such a problem with the “double murder” laws. Either/Or, just pick one.

      • jenndee

I think this is sick, but here is how a liberal justifies this. The mother chose to kill her baby when she gets an abortion. If the baby is killed by shooting it wasn’t the mother’s choice so it is murder. Sick minds they have, sick, sick minds.

      • lainer51

YOU pick one — I know the difference

    • VotingForZombieReagan2016

It’s amazing to me that “personhood” can rest solely on whether or not the baby is wanted by the mother.

      • F M

That’s exactly it. When we want it, it’s a baby. When we don’t, it’s a fetus. It’s obviously a psychological tool to make it easier to kill a baby. Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels would be proud.

      • pajamakat

Here is what I just can’t understand about this. I am NOT condoning abortion so please don’t think I am. That being said, there is something very troubling here. Women know when they are pregnant way before their 7th, 8th or 9th month. Why the hell do they wait so long for an abortion ??

        • SandiinMaine

I’ve been wondering the same thing. As hard as it is to believe that a woman would be okay with killing her own child at 4-8 weeks, how in the world is it conceivable that she could do so after feeling that real-live child moving inside her and growing?

I’ve also wondered how the mothers felt, watching Kermit snip the spinal cords of their real-live babies. Did they care? How can a society survive when mothers have no compassion for their own babies?

        • F M

I suspect every situation is different. But one likely answer is increasing pressure/coercion from the men who impregnated them and/or increasing pressure from their families as the pregnancy becomes more evident. The amount of women who state that they were pressured into abortion is staggering. The idea that abortion is a “free choice” is actually just another pro-abort lie, by and large. Abortion is largely a tool to allow men to use women at will.

  • Josephine (D)

I guess it’s important to protect the Supreme Court-given “right” to kill a baby than it is to be honest and scientifically accurate.

  • Dan_In_Chicago

So… the NYT is “disgraceful” because they didn’t use the words we prefer they did? Jeez, come on. They reported the story accurately here, just in more clinical terms than you are willing to accept. The Times is super-duper-uber-liberal, but this is not an example of them being shameful …. Calm down.

    • Pat Loudoun

The left is extremely clinical in their use of language and have been for 40 years. “Clumps of tissue” become a “mass of cells” which develop into a “fetus” which is only a human baby once it’s fully cleared the birth canal.

Just like those babies Gosnell murdered. Words mean things, Dan. If you are incapable of seeing what the Times reporter was attempting to do, you really need to start paying attention.

    • Billie Slash

Its called obfuscation. I guess you get more upset when your XBox gets broken….

    • John W.

The word “disgraceful” is starting to appear just before “NYT” about as often as the word “unmitigated” appears just before the word “gall”.

      • MurphTacular

LOL. That’s b/c Twitchy isn’t known for their resourcefulness when it comes to synonyms or adjectives … Everything’s ‘shameful’ when Twitchy’s angry people ‘squee’ when Twitchy thinks people are happier than Twitchy has deemed fit for a given situation. Also, anyone who favors ANY kind of gun-control legislation EVAH is a ‘gun-grabber.’ Pfft …

        • F M

Do you actually have anything of substance to add, Murph? Or do you have so much free time that you can troll at will?

Gosnell murdered hundreds of born children, the NYT can’t even bring itself to speak plainly and objectively about it and **this** is your response? **This* is what gets you worked up enough to write?

        • Clete Torres

You forgot the ‘S’ in Smurphtacular.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

It’s calling a spade a spade. Not a shovel, not a scoop. A spade. Sorry you don’t have a shred of conscience to see it as shameful. What was it that Iowahawkblog said? Oh yes. Pathetic moral cretin. He must have been describing you, MurphWhackular

        • lainer51

          OMG – you are pathetic!

    • ObamaFail

They didn’t report it accurately. The babies had been born. They were laying on the table, crying. Gosnell butchered them as they laid on the tables. This was murder. This wasn’t a fetus, these were babies who the mothers had given birth too. It is them being shameful. There’s no other way to look at it.

    • nc

Oh wow, does this really have to be explained AGAIN? Libbies change the the language to “soften up” those who are barely paying attention in order to make social or political changes. It’s subtle and very effective, and they’ve been doing it for years.

    • Tyrconnell

Fetus is Latin for unborn child. These were born, wrong word used deliberately to lesson the impact of the verdict.

    • TomJB

If you are wavering over “clinical terms” then they should have used the word “infant.” Since that is how hospitals refer to the newly born, and brings the term “infanticide” nicely into the verdict, eh?

    • jenndee

The NYT is disgraceful because they used the word “fetus” to make this horrid serial killer less scary. If the NYT would have used the word “baby” all through that article, their readers might start to think….wait a minute, abortion really is killing babies. God forbid liberals think of these thousands of babies being killed daily as anything more than a cluster of cells.

    • lainer51

what a lame excuse… YOU calm down and take another Prozac!

  • Steve_J

Dishonesty? It’s what’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the NYT’s.

  • poljunkie♪

HEY NYT….I had one of those FETUSES…YOU A$$HATS.

In my case, because I was pregnant and wanted a child— and DELIVERED VERY EARLY….PRE TERM——- baby was called— A PREEMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RightThinking1

“..the defense battled over whether the fetuses Dr. Gosnell was charged
with killing were alive when they were removed from their mothers.”

So…, presumably the ‘fetuses’ had ‘mothers’, but the mothers did not have ‘babies’? Do I have that correct? Because, you know, I really rely on the NYT to give me guidance on these issues.

    • nc

      Good catch!

  • Allison Millsaps Eckley

I think it’s interesting that the terminology variance in how we use “baby” vs. “fetus” seems to be contingent on the mother’s desire to keep or abort the child. For example, when a 6 or 7-month-term fetus (the age as some of the alleged murder victims) is delivered prematurely, but alive, to a mother who wants to keep it, we congratulate her on the birth of her child. If that same 6 or 7-month-term aged fetus is aborted just inches inside the birth canal, and delivered stillborn as planned to a mother willingly receiving an abortion, it’s still a fetus.

    • nc

      Convenient and despicable.

    • Pat Loudoun

The douchiest comment ever would be some beta-dad saying “We’re having a FETUS!”

I would need to attack immediately. First for the contraction “We’re” and second for the word “fetus”.

But you are right, Ally. No one has ever said “We’re having a fetus!” Even in Berkeley.

  • F M

Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels would be proud.

Jews marked for extermination = “untermenschen” (subhuman)

Unborn babies (and now *born* babies) marked for extermination = “fetuses”

Rhetoric designed to make it easier to kill an innocent human being.

    *Untermensch* –

    • MurphTacular

Wow. First Nazi reference of the day … Eesh.

      • F M

It is what it is, Murph. Pro-aborts often (mis)use language to dehumanize the unborn child. They often even use very similar language to the Nazis, even referring to unborn children as “parasites”. This is the very same type of language used by the Nazis to dehumanize Jews. The intention is plainly the same – objectifying people makes it easier to kill them.

        Nazis: Jews are parasites:

Daily Kos: Unborn children are parasites:

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Exactly. Why do you think most of humanity refers to their offspring as ‘kids’? Aren’t kids the offspring of goats? It’s changing the language.

          • F M

The irony is that all “fetus” means is “young one” or “little one”. It’s a simple matter of science that each human life begins at conception. And abortion kills him or her.

“Fertilization is a sequence of events that begins with the contact of a sperm (spermatozoon) with a secondary oocyte (ovum) and ends with the fusion of their pronuclei … and the mingling of their chromosomes to form a new cell. This fertilized ovum, known as a zygote, is a large diploid cell that is the beginning … of a human being.” (Moore, Keith L., Essentials of Human Embryology. Toronto: B.C. Decker, Inc., 1988, p.2.)

“Almost all higher animals start their lives from a single cell, the fertilized ovum (zygote). … The time of fertilization represents the starting point in the life history, or ontogeny, of the individual.” (Carlson, Bruce M., Patten’s Foundations of Embryology, 6th edition. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1996, p.3.)

“After fertilization has taken place, a new human being has come into existence. This is no longer a matter of taste or opinion. Each individual has a very neat beginning, at conception.” Dr. Jerome Lejeune, genetics professor at the University of Descartes, Paris. Discoverer of the Down’s Syndrome chromosome

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

I was agreeing with you…. How much easier would it be, you think, for an individual that used to have a conscience murder children vs. kids? It’s a psychological disassociation that occurs. Check out the ‘No Hesitation’ targets now available for LEO’s to shoot at.

And I was conveying an example I assumed even Murph could understand.

          • F M

My apologies – I changed my post. I thought you were being sarcastic. But you know, I never thought of it. I just came across this article making a similar point. Interesting that the proliferation of “kids” instead of “children” coincided with advent of the sexual revolution in the 60’s. Point taken. Thank you.

I wouldn’t call it “intellectual dishonesty” w/o proof that John Hurdle has anything but a rudimentary intellect. The poor slob just might not know the difference between fetus and baby, or delivered and removed.

    • F M

It’s still an intellectually dishonest statement. The degree to which he’s personally culpable may be a different question.

      • grais

If he’s intellectually deficient, he’s not being dishonest, he’s just being dumb.

        • Billie Slash

Respectfully, give it a rest. People with “rudimentary intellect” end up living in state schools, not working for the NYT.
The guy is just a soulless liberal that would rather save a baby seal than a baby human.

          • ObamaFail

Don’t forget how the same liberals who march for the right to butcher babies saying, “It’s not a living thing!” are the same people who march against murderers being put to death for their crimes. Pro-abortion zealots preach “life is sacred!!” when they are defending killers. But then they don’t share that sentiment when it comes to innocent children.

    • nc

That’s very generous of you, but if true, he’s unqualified for his job.

Why is it “anti-abortion campaigners” vs. “abortion rights advocates” ?

    • camnpat

“Abortion rights advocates” makes it sound like these people are in a noble, positive cause.”Anti-abortion campaigners”, on the other hand, makes it sound these people are an emotionally reactionary, irrational mob.

It’s the marketing machine of the left using words to confuse the low information voter and fire up the pro- choice activists when they can’t/ won’t debate on the merits of the issue.

      • TomJB

Exactly. Just like “pro-choice” is supposed to make them appear noble and defending individual rights. Unless, of course, your choice is to eat at McDonald’s, buy a gun, or drink a Big Gulp! Then your choice doesn’t matter and you need to shut up and do as your betters tell you to do.

    • Louise Ingebrethsen

I wish they would call themseves…….”Pro-Baby Killers”, but since that’s not going to happen because “it’s not a baby” in their eyes, then how about….”pro-fetus killers” ?……….oh wait a minute…….they probably would not accept the word “killing” either.

Maybe……”pro-fetus destroying advocates”…… I’d be happy with that…next best thing to “pro-
      baby killers”

…3240 week old fetus removed from the Warsaw Ghetto. #NYT1943

  • camnpat

I’m not shocked. The so called “pro-choice” advocates consider a baby no better than a growth happening inside of a woman’s body akin to a tumor. If a tumor is still such when it is removed, why wouldn’t a baby still be a fetus when it leaves the woman?

I know this is not how everyone who is pro abortion thinks, but those advocating and campaigning for it certainly communicate this message.

      Oh wait…

  • froggy19510

People like those on the staff of the NYT are just trying to de-value life. If it is just a fetus or a blob of mater or if the person is too old to have a good quality of life or is mentally incapable of contributing to society it would be easier to kill them. Taking it to it’s logical conclusion if you become a misfit or someone that dosen’t tow the liberal line they would have no problem killing you too.

  • CHHR

Does the NYT really believe the base of low-info voters are so stupid as to not make the connection between a “fetus removed from mother” and a the term baby? Or is the beginning of a new narrative to desensitize the public about the development of said fetus and it’s ability to survive outside that womb at the time Gosnell MURDERED that child.
And this is the medium the administration hangs with to get their message out? Geesh… where’s Toto… I miss Kansas.

  • CHHR

I hear a lot of talk about whether this case changes the discussion about abortion… I hope so… cause it definately changes the thought into the decision in Roe v. Wade… the case focused on when viable life begins and not only do we know a hell of a lot more now then we did in 1973, but science has made tremendous strides iwth neo-natal care since then.
Equally as important was the thought then that no one would take abortion liberties beyond the prescribed 12 weeks… that was then… today I say bring it on.
I was born 3 months & 1 week pre-mature (pre-1973) and listed with “failure to thrive… the conventional wisdom then was to let me die in the corner of the nursery with no intervention… I will forever be thankful that my family reminded those doctors of their duty to protect and preserve life – even if all they had at the time was that foley catheter to use as a feeding tube until I learned to eat on my own.

  • F M

NOTE – I just checked this NYT article, and they have edited the piece and removed this ridiculous wording. In fact, now, in the beginning of the piece it prominently uses the word “babies”. Yet, I see no place where they indicate that they have revised it. Isn’t that required by standard ethical practice? I’m glad they changed the wording, but that seems pretty dishonest to me.

Beginning of the article now: “PHILADELPHIA — A doctor who was responsible for cutting the spines of babies after botched abortions was convicted Monday of three counts of first-degree murder in a case that became a sharp rallying cry for anti-abortion activists. The doctor, Kermit Gosnell, 72, operated a clinic in West Philadelphia catering to poor women that prosecutors called a “house of horrors.”

The case turned on whether the late-term pregnancies Dr. Gosnell terminated resulted in live births. His lawyer, Jack McMahon, argued that because Dr. Gosnell injected a drug in utero to stop the heart, the deliveries were stillbirths, and movements that witnesses testified to observing — a jerked arm, a cry, swimming motions — were mere spasms. (end quote)
