Earlier this afternoon, CNN’s John King reported that a suspect in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing had been arrested:

Yeah … not so much.

CNN has done some backpedaling, but unfortunately, it seems that it’s too little, too late.

CNN’s rush to report an arrest that didn’t happen has left them with egg on their face. Naturally, Twitterers are taking full advantage and serving up heaping helpings of mockery:

Everyone trying to get ahead of the story. There’s no prize for being the first to get it wrong. I saw a dozen conflicting reports in 10 minutes of surfing.

  • notenoughtime

News is no longer relevant or professional. The rush to be the first to report anything, factual or not, is the only requirement needed.

  • ksimms

Haha, CNN is pathetic, but where is all of the criticism of the NY Post who was incredibly wrong and misleading with their reporting? Everyone here was jumping on the “Saudi National” and “dark-skinned male”. Oops all around, whether is was blaming Middle Easterners or Anti-Tax Tea Party types.

    • Harry A

we often cannot see fault with ourselves. CNN reported it first, but that doesnt mean we should be giving a pass to Fox and ABC who agreed.

I’m sure Media Matters is already hard at work blasting out talking points about the times when Fox News was wrong about a story. By the end of the day the story will be, “They aren’t as bad as Faux!!”

    • Sons Thunder

Pretty sure Fox also reported that arrest had been made.

Fox reported that CNN and the Boston Globe were reporting an arrest was made. Megyn Kelly said they (Fox) had no independent confirmation.

I’ll take your word on it — I don’t much care. They all make these types of mistakes and they are all mostly a waste of time.

I don’t know why everyone is so upset. People are DEAD!! What difference does it make who did it???

Heh. I see what you did there. 😉

    • seanmahair

It makes a difference because if they don’t find and make an example out of the animals that did this it will only embolden others to do the same. We are a nation that exists on laws. Murder, terrorism, and treason are all crimes that must be punished if we want to live in safety. If you want anarchy the Middle East is your best bet. Of course they’d kill you just because you come from here but hey “what difference does it make.”

        I can’t upvote this enough.

    • Christian Orpinell

“What difference does it make who did it???”

If you ever (unfortunately) get harmed in any way, fashion, or form and it ultimately causes the death of you, can we dismiss any effort, time, and money spent on finding a perpetrator? Because… what difference does it make?

      • Stacey Sefcik

Exactly Christian Orpinell, which is why you’d think Hillary Clinton would have cared about the 4 brave American citizens who died in Benghazi because she ignored their pleas for help. That is what Peri Ropke Duncan is mocking. It SHOULD matter here in Boston, and it should have mattered in Benghazi…

        • Christian Orpinell

“Hillary Clinton would have cared about the 4 brave American citizens who died in Benghazi because she ignored their pleas for help.”

That was the reference? Oh okay. That’s makes sense. I see what she did thar.

Wait a minute, folks are pointing the finger of blame at CNN when every single news outlet reported the same thing? Damn, guess that means all of you conservatives are closet CNN watchers. Also, shouldn’t we be asking how could so many well placed law enforcement officials get the wrong information? People like John King and Fran Townshend have only the highest placed sources in their contact lists. They’re not talking to beat cops for their off the record info. We should be asking how the hell could the communications between agencies and officials be so screwed up that they told reporters there had been arrest when there had not?

    • © Sponge

I believe CNN was first and the other networks quoted CNN, but I’m not watching any of them, so all them REICHWINGERS just suck.

  • CirnoNewsNetwork

This is the Cirno News Network with a breaking news story!

Of the reports that are coming in from the city, we here have narrowed down the suspects to three locations. While Hu may not be known by anything but his name, he is said to be on “first” according to bystander accounts. His accomplice Wut has been identified concisely, but we are unaware of what his motives are. However, he is currently at a hideout that is registered as “second”. There are rumors of a third accomplice, however, I. Don Tno has no tracks that we have found so far, save for the name of his mysterious hideout, otherwise known as “third.”

Considering the correlation between these three locations, we will analyze them with the most scrutinizing of our tengu reporters. We will get back to you soon once we have more information. This has been the Cirno News Network: the strongest name in news.

  • grais

No, John King, your erroneous, hyperventilating reporting reflects SOLELY on you. Whatever “ppl you talked to” only told something to some guy. YOU took facetime on national tv to blurt your ‘scoop’. Man up, princess.

I was listening to a police scanner all day and could have sworn that they all thought an arrest had been made too. It even sounded like they were trying to time a presentation for when a Fox News helicopter could arrive. Is Boston in Denmark?

  • j p

I just read, “Ahead of his visit, Obama declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts”.
Can anyone tell me what this entails legally? I’m sure that there are rights that are suspended but all they talk about is how this enables federal funding relief.

The first released article on CNN.com stated something to the effect of “6 Injured in the blast, being treated at the scene”, while everyone else was reporting 3 Dead, 10 or more lost a Limb, dozens injured. If they had someone at the scene to report 6 were injured and being treated at the scene, then surely they would of had a ‘Clue’ that possibly a greater number may have been injured?

I think the first story was either total make-believe or an attempt to downplay the carnage until they had a better idea of who was responsible. BTW: I think either OCCUPY BOSTON (already tied up in court cases for months) or the deported Saudi may be involved.
