Hey, why not? California has been circling the political drain for some time now, so goofy legislators might as well put a little more icing on that cake, right?

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano — a Democrat, natch — has introduced a bill that would require group insurance to cover infertility treatments for homosexual couples — regardless of gender. No, really:

The bill doesn’t require a homosexual couple to go through any types of treatment or methods, such as heterosexual sex, surrogacy, artificial insemination, etc. Rather, the mere inability to conceive a pregnancy or carry a pregnancy while having active sexual relations is sufficient to show a need for treatment.

(Emphasis ours.)

Now, we didn’t go to medical school, but it seems to us that, when it comes to how pregnancy happens, the science is pretty much settled. It takes two to tango, so to speak. At some point during the process, a man and a woman are required. Ammiano apparently skipped that lecture in biology class.

  • Lexikin

You know, for a group that is so different, the gays sure want to be the same as straight people!

    • Elaine

Why is it called Infertility? There is no such thing as gay infertility. Two members of the same sex can never procreate. So what they means is they want us to pay for them to PAY someone straight to create a child for them? Most bizzare demand ever!

      • brewerandpatriot

I bet they turned to Uncle Dr. Joe Biden PHD and he has confirmed that “if you mix the little white squigglies from two manlovers, they make multiple white squigglies which in turn create a baby some three years down the road.”

      • nc

Elaine, Elaine, your definition is so restrictive, old fashioned and uninclusive. If they want to expand the definition of “infertility” to include ALL people, who are YOU to stand in the way of progress? Neigh, HISTORY!!!

        • shimauma

I think you mean “Nay, History” the other version is the type that horses use….

          • nc

Well, I might have spelled it that way if my post had been serious. :)

          • shimauma

understood, sarc means ok to embellish spelling errors, got it.

          • nc

Well, I might have spelled it that way if my post had been serious. :)

        • Shirl Garza

Nc it is not old fashion, seriously? Did you really say that. What a useful idiot you are. You obviously believe anything. People were not created to procreate man & man, woman & woman. Animals know more than you. How about producing puppies with two male dogs!!!!!!!!

    • Elaine

Just thought of this.. . if I am single, with no partner, does that mean I have infertility problems and Insurance has to pay for me if I want someone else to have a baby for me? WEIRD, huh?

    • http://twitter.com/amberleetweet Amber Lee

There are gays who hate the gays who want a family. I may be wrong but I think the gays wanting a traditional family is a new movement

      • PopArt

Amber, there are a segment who do have anger issues with family. But there are many decent gay couples, many raising children who are too busy paying bills and trying to stay afloat to care about infertility studies. And as a single gay man, I am insulted by this latest example of, don’t know how to categorize this, pandering?? Obama lost me totally the day I realized he was using gays and lesbians like floosies on the side which was the same day I realized he hates American taxpayers, of which I am both. For what it’s worth, it doesn’t appear even partisan liberal organizations like HRC are talking about this much at all. Probably embarrassed. In terms of those who want “traditional family”, I wouldn’t say it’s a new movement but may be newly more vocal than in the past, and there have been notable cases since the 80s and 90s of same sex couples suing to adopt and raise the children they were fostering. Trust me, in spite of his rhetoric, I know Obama despises gays and lesbian Americans about the same as everyone else.

        • Shirl Garza

Popart, I do not agree with your life style, but the ultimate judge for us ALL is and WIIL be GOD, but I will say for the first time in my life finally a gay person who gets that their group of people has been used to get votes. You get it!!!! I am a black/native American and Obama did the same thing to my races. He hates the American way of life and he was carried into the office of Presidency based on deception and the color of his skin. Thank you for your input and I will be thinking about you in my prayers.

      Well said

Aren’t most fertilization treatment expensive? This just seems like a waste of insurance company’s money that could be going towards more important things.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

As with all things the government interferes with, it would not be voluntary on the part of the insurers. They will be required by law to do it, or forfeit their ability to underwrite in California.

For the life of me I don’t understand why anyone would want to stay there, with the exception of the huge number of human leeches that are already there. Good weather only goes so far.

          • LinTaylor

True enough. My best friend from high school leans Green, but we can still have civil political discussions because we’re both open to other ideas, and know when to stop just short of a debate.

      • Shirl Garza

Not everyone can conceive, my husband and I did NOT!!!!!! I have cried many tears and Mother’s Day and Father’s Days are hard Holidays to get through in our home!!!!!!!!!! They do not deserve infertility coverage!!!!!

        • Squirrel!

I’m VERY sorry to hear this! I hope my comment did not offend as it was not directed at heterosexual couples who would enjoy having their own little ones pitter pattering around the house. It was my way of saying even though gay couples biologically are unable to conceive, it is now going to be a right for them to seek infertility treatments to attempt achieving the impossible, and it is a slap in the face to those who are truly unable to conceive. We are living in the twilight zone. My heart goes out to you & your husband.

    • Shirl Garza

See he does not have a clue

  • RememberSekhmet

By definition, there is a third parent, the opposite-sex biological parent, involved. And it is a GOOD thing when fertility treatments are expensive. If you can afford the surrogate/artificial insemination and subsequent legal adoption by the non-bio partner, the custodial parent in the event of a breakup is less likely to go on welfare or otherwise seek the other party for financial relief. With a heterosexual pairing, there is at least in most cases the attempt to ensure that the resulting child is the biological son or daughter of both halves of the couple. The infertile man’s sperm is mixed with the donor sperm, the surrogate is carrying the wife’s eggs, etc. With a gay couple, this is impossible. And in the era of the DNA test, not being a bio-parent is a strong argument for a party who does not wish to pay child support.

  • Clayton Grant

Next, they’ll demand free condoms for all lesbian couples.

Our state legislature has become a perfect storm where insanity and stupidity in great volumes collide.

I don’t know what the solution is, unless we can find a way to identify every liberal who moved here since 1980 and deport them back to their home state.

  • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

Has anyone in CA ever heard of the private sector?

    • camnpat

Based on this proposal they haven’t even heard of biology.

  • mapache

Maybe I slept through sex ed but even if each partner in a gay relation were fertile (no infertility there) the end result would still be no kids. The problem is not infertility….it is two people of the same sex trying to create a baby.

    • shimauma

HUSH!!! NO LOGIC ALLOWED ON THE LIBTURD PROGRESSIVE PLATFORM PLEASE!!! especially in california, may it drop off into the sea…

  • notenoughtime

First, the medical term for infertility primarily refers to the biological inability of a person to contribute to conception. Same sex couples cannot create life because they can only contribute to 1/2 of the equation. It is by choice that conception cannot occur naturally. The last time I look, infertility treatments were not covered by most insurances. But certainly that cannot be the case for some. Another unintended consequence of opening up a door to appease all those who will not be happy until any sense of tradition is obliterated. Let the lawsuits begin along with more fleecing of the hardworking taxpayers – bravo!

    • peteee363

and this is one time where two halves do not make a whole!

    • nc

I will never forget when I was told infertility treatments were not covered (yes, here in CA) it was because “there is no right to have a baby.”

Wait til all the hundreds of thousands (at least) of couples that sunk their life savings into uncovered treatments hear about this.

    • Shirl Garza

I guess if we don’t support experimental funding to find out if two gay dems can take a fertilized egg, implant it into their stomachs (or somewhere) and after nine months, deliver a happy baby from their colon (?) …. that we’re haters?

    Can’t they just adopt?

    • Squirrel!

Implant a fertilized chicken egg & see what happens.

  • GaryTheBrave

If I ran an insurance company I would leave the California market faster than Magpul or HiViz leave Colorado.

  • Frank Drebin

According to the “Peter Principle” it is painfully obvious that Assemblyman Tom Ammiano has been elevated to a position far beyond his competence level.

    Mr. Ammiano, you’re fired.

    • Orlando Cee

Same with the guy in the White House.

  • salvagesalvage

Yeah, being gay doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t have children.

    • Silenttype78

True….but it does mean that you can’t create them.

      • salvagesalvage

Uh yes gay people can, being gay doesn’t mean sterile.

        • Silenttype78

          Derp.
          Not with each other.

          • salvagesalvage

Nope, but they can still procreate.

          • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

Two men not being able to have a baby together is NOT “infertility.” Surely even you can’t be this insane. Are you really catching the premise here?

          • Squirrel!

The idea behind this legislation is that if a gay couple is unable to conceive after a year of sexual relations, they can then seek infertility treatment. This legislation is not about finding a surrogate mom or adopting. From what I’ve read it’s about providing fertility treatments to the people in the gay relationship to help them conceive. That’s simply not possible.

          • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

More to the point — they get the MONEY for treatment.

I bet I won’t be the only one.

  • Squirrel!

It’s not about the biological science. It’s all about the politics. I would think even gay peple would say, “WTF?” This is the dumbest thing I think I’ve ever read & the most ignorant legislation I’ve ever heard of. Certainly, I’m not the only one.

how can i say this, as not to offend my gay friends? procreation is shall we say fruitless with two ding dongs, or two pair of mammaries. you need one of each to make babies, which is why normal people are opposed to gay marraige in the first place!

What you’re missing—One male’s sperm will be used to replace the genetic material in a viable egg, another male’s sperm fertilizes it and Bob’s your mama. It’s in the pipeline, folks. Google it. Isn’t it fascinating to observe a nation in the throes of death? We’re witnessing collapse on a scale not seen since 300-400 AD with the Western Roman empire. All the signs of a morally, physically and spiritually bankrupt nation are evident to anyone who wishes to see them. Sadly, 90% of Americans will remain in “it can’t happen here” mode until the jackboot comes crashing down on their stupefied faces.
