In the wake of last week’s Newtown massacre, national chain Dick’s Sporting Goods is pulling guns from its displays in stores near Newtown and suspending the sale of “modern sporting rifles” nationwide.

Dick’s issued the following statement:

We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.

Well, not exactly. As of now, the suspension is only temporary. Still, gun control advocates are lavishing praise on the company:

But many more are not nearly as pleased at the news.

In what should come as no surprise, proponents of gun rights are quite disgusted by what they see as capitulation to the anti-gun lobby:

And, from the looks of things, regardless of how long the suspension lasts, Dick’s will be losing a lot of customers:

Online firearms retailer Cheaper Than Dirt has also suspended gun sales (though, interestingly, it is still selling gun accessories), and Walmart has pulled an online ad for a gun made by the same manufacturer as the gun used by Adam Lanza.

Fortunately, as of now, Walmart has no plans to halt gun sales. Let’s hope they continue to stand up for the Second Amendment.

Too bad. I’m in the market for a good small sidearm for possible CCW use. Guess I’ll head to Bass Pro or Cold Creek Armory. Dick’s isn’t getting anymore of my money.

Academy Sports or Sportsman’s Wharehouse are good ones.

      • Chris Jones

Academy is doing the same as Dicks

      • Guest

Academy is owned by a big lib contributor and is also ending sales.

  • TWG2A

This is a HUGE mistake for both of these companies. They’re now added to the BOYCOTT list.

    • Sheldon Cooper

We really need a conservative national boycott website. Maybe there already is one?

  • SwTk

Strange. More teens were killed this year in auto accidents involving text messaging while driving, over gun fatalities and gun fatalities hve dropped since 2009. IPhones
are still flying off the selves.

    • v1cious

They didn’t take 28 people with them. Stop with the slippery slope, it only makes you look ignorant.

      • PennyRobinsonFanClub

That is NOT a “slippery slope” argument. YOU are an ignorant twatface and an intellectually languid baboon.

        Don’t have to take 28…one is enough….

      • Cold War Grunt

No but they take people with them, even one child dying is one child too many — in this case, a person with firearms they had stolen is let into a gun free zone and kills 28 people with 2 handguns. Gun control laws have no effect on criminals. What if he had plowed a car into the building, into a classroom, would you be demanding that “car-control” laws? No, I think not.

Your position is based on emotions and talking points. Please get a few facts before you start posting nonsense that proves you are ignorant.

Gun crimes are going down in the US, not up. Gun crimes in the UK, Australia, etc, on the way up. Gun crimes in Israel, nearly non-existent (if you don’t count the Hamas types). You might want to read some of Dr. Gary Kleck’s non-partisan research into the subject. Kleck started out as a liberal, but when his own research led him to the facts, he was able to throw off the yoke of liberal orthodoxy and begin to think for himself.

hey idiot, does your mom know you are using terms you do not comprehend?

      • Penmar

How do you know, chain reaction accidents happen, school buses get hit.

  • Kim

I’m sure all the gangs and criminals are going to be really inconvenienced by this.

  • Fire and Adjust!

My question is……….is Dick’s going to sit on a HUGE stockpile of these rifles that they’ve already paid for and now will not sell and thereby recover the money they spent to acquire them? Seems like Dick’s just made one bad knee jerk decision that has two nasty consequences…….bye bye cost recovery, and bye bye customers………. With leadership like that, I can’t see the company lasting much longer…………

    • TugboatPhil

I still don’t go to KMart since the Rosie O’Donnell fiasco. Some of their stores brought back guns but I’ve never been back. I never spent a lot at P*ssies Dicks, but I’ll spend none from now on.

  • AlecJ

Trust me, Dick’s will quietly start selling them again the second it hurts business…..unless, of course they have a CEO who is willing to lay off employees, close stores, and hurt families who cant pay their rent after those lost jobs. To liberals, throwing families into poverty to make an empty point is par for the course, though.

Ill take my dollars elsewhere to support someone who hasnt needlessly folded to political pressure or emotion.

  • Midnight Cow

Crime problem solved! As everyone knows, the Bloods and Crips get all their weapons exclusively at Dick’s.

  • Johnyv

I will never do business with them EVER AGAIN!

    • Chris Jones

      Neither will I.

    • Chris Jones

      Neither will I.

  • sleazyrider

To my knowledge , the beltway snipers never fired more than a single round each kill or injury…Gun used…a Bushmaster 223…point I’m trying to make…they could have done the same with a bolt action..If someone decides to commit mass murder, the instrument used won’t be of concern.

    • 13strigoi

      Charles Whitman being an example.

  • Jason

Yep the second someone Said “AR-15” It was like oh shit here we go the liberal wieners are comin out of the wood work on this one

  • Bamela Mac

you’re making the common mistake of thinking that people moved enough to write nasty things on the internet represent society in general.

    • SDN

Obviously someone flunked marketing. For each complaint you see, there are hundreds who just don’t shop there again.

  • Purple State

“Fortunately, as of now, Walmart has no plans to halt gun sales. Let’s hope they continue to stand up for the Second Amendment.”

Unfortunately, it’s not as watered-down and simple as that, but then, this is Twitchy. One cannot own a Bushmaster assault rifle and still exercise one’s 2nd Amendment rights. Assault rifles aren’t the only guns out there.

    • SDN

      “Shall not be infringed”.

  • OppressLibs

As if I would ever buy any gun at Dick’s. Only dicks would shop at Dick’s. I live in Virginia, hence I have more gun stores to choose from than I can shake a stick at!

  • Guest

Buying all of my sportswear elsewhere beginning yesterday.

  • walterc

I’m guessing more gun owners than liberals shop at Dick’s. When the bottom line and stock values fall, we’ll see how dedicated to the cause they really are.

  • Mike

Dicks Sporting goods, Cheaper Than Dirt and many other companies have GLADLY taken the money from buyer of firearms and now that our 2nd Amend. Right is being challenged they tuck there tail and hide. I for one will never support any of these companies again and for those who thing that is a great thing they stop selling i hope your ball bat will keep you safe and warm when you are assaulted by a CRIMINAL who could care less about any laws. example see Mexico… and they are low on the list of countries.

  • Thomas Dobbs

So they stop the leagal purchase of these guns. The guy who killed all of those people got the guns by illing someone ad stealing them. I guess this wouldn’t have stopped anything. It jst keeps law abiding citzens from buying these guns for protection against the people who get ther guns illeagally. Wow, great thing we are ding here. When are we going to take the guns away from our cops and military?

  • Tim Camber

I was going to buy there,…..but I have no support for anti gun activists,…and most ,if you note the responses ,are women !! No more need be said.
