Earlier today, Twitchy told you about actor Jamie Foxx’s cultish, outrageous remarks about President Obama being “our Lord and Savior.” Now, Fox News’ Todd Starnes reports that a painting depicting Obama as a crucified Jesus Christ is on display at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston. According to Starnes, the painting was originally supposed to be displayed nearly four years ago at an event in New York City, but the event was canceled due to public outcry.

[Artist Michael D’Antuono] dismissed critics who called the display blasphemous.

“The crucifixion of the president was meant metaphorically,” he told Fox News. “My intent was not to compare him to Jesus.”

Is that so?

D’Antuono blamed the controversy on conservative media “trying to promote the idea that liberals believe the president to literally be our savior.”

D’Antuono can play the blame game all he wants. But one look at the painting, called “Truth,” is enough to show that the criticisms he’s faced are more than well-deserved:

Conservatives are livid over this latest example of the deification of Barack Obama:

“Disgusting” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

What happened to separation of church and state?

    • Canadian in USA

Ah, but they are trying to replace God with a man-made god. Those who do not follow God will be easily fooled in following a false messiah.

Read Jeremiah 2 – history keeps repeating itself.

      • Pater Tempus

Athieists don’t follow God. How can you get someone who doesn’t follow an allegedly real God to follow an allegedly false one?

        • http://www.facebook.com/lisa.dean.564 Lisa Dean

Yes, please explain that @facebook-100002702198701:disqus. Not all of Obama voters are Atheistic in their beliefs but they sure do feel that he’s their Messiah.

          • Pater Tempus

You mean in much the same way that Reaganites thought Reagan was their Messiah?

          • Lady 12

I’ve never heard of a serious picture of Reagan being portrayed as Christ.

          • wurmwife

Maria, I never heard of ANY picture of Reagan being portrayed as Christ!

          • Lady 12

I haven’t either, but I figured someone might have to mock something or other. Unlike Owebama, Reagan was a humble man who always put the needs of others first and lived very simply. He would have been appalled and horrified if anyone made a picture depicting him as Christ.

          • wurmwife

Oh brother, Mr. Tempus. All you do is re-write history. First is your claim that Bush was never persecuted. Good grief! He still is to this day! Liberals actually claimed that Bush created Hurricane Katrina and aimed it at New Orleans so he could kill black people! Liberals claim that he planned and carried out 9/11 because he wanted war and to take over the Middle East! Liberals claimed he blew up the levies in New Orleans to kill blacks! Bush wasn’t merely persecuted; he was demonized! And to this day, liberals claim that the economy is STILL Bush’s fault, and that Obama bears no responsibility at all! For four years, Obama has been in charge (with two full years of a Democrat-controlled Congress bowing to his every whim), and yet liberals STILL say it’s all Bush’s fault!

And now you’re re-writing history with Reagan too. NO ONE ever called Reagan a messiah. No one ever deified him. Conservatives (and many Democrats as well) thought he was a good president and liked his policies. They clapped at his speeches and enjoyed his humor.

Meanwhile, liberals refer to Obama as “lord and savior” and “the messiah.” They have a calendar with Obama’s birthday replacing Christmas. They shout “it’s the messiah” as his motorcade goes by. They make paintings and posters with Obama crowned by thorns. Other posters show his face and Bible verses that imply he’s the Lord; for example, one poster shows him and the verse “For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son.”

Reagan fans have posters/mugs with Reagan’s face and a quote of something Reagan himself said. Obama fans have posters/mugs with Obama’s face crowned by thorns and quotes from the Bible.

            There is a huge difference.

It’s fine that you like Obama. Go ahead. But stop trying to rewrite history.

        • robcrawford2

Depends on the “atheist”. Some of them follow anyone who promises them the chance to hold a whip.

        • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

Geesh you can’t be serious. Does the phrase “cult of personality” mean anything to you? (Hint: if people like you had any meaning in your pathetic lives, you wouldn’t be so blindly devoted to/easily fooled by Obama).

          • Pater Tempus

You do not know who I voted for, so your comment is irrelevant, immaterial and stupid. Try again, please.

          • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

Pfft. You’re a moron & not worthy of any more of my notice.

        • Katielee4211

Because a vacuum needs to be filled. Everyone needs something to believe in, a ‘savior’ they can look to as being in control, of bringing order. Whether that’s Jesus, a statue or Obama.

        • FranklinWasRight

Atheism is a false god, just like money, sex, drugs, art, humanism…
Anything you use to take the place of God becomes what you worship, whether you realize it or not. Whatever is most important in your life. For some atheists it is their car, for some it is politics, for others it is alcohol, for some it is their family.
It really doesn’t matter what it is you put ahead of God, whether it is noble or whether it is degenerant in nature, it is a false god.
That is why according to the Christian worldview, one can worship Obama and not even realize it, because they are worshipping him as an ideology. It is a cult of personality, and when you place it ahead of your faith in God, you’re commiting idolotry, even if you don’t believe in God.

  • Pater Tempus

The concept of a metaphor is lost on you people, isn’t it….

    • Canadian in USA

So, if someone did the same thing for President George W Bush, you’d say the same thing, right?

      • Pater Tempus

Bush never faced the level of deranged persecution that our current president does, but there are those who believe he did and for the record, my response to them would be the same…..because I understand the concept of metaphor.

        • Canadian in USA

I would respectfully disagree with you about your comment that “Bush never faced the level of deranged persecution…”. Most comparisons for President Bush was to Hitler. (He was also called a “warmonger”, “war criminal”, etc.) And while I understand how metaphor works, there will be those on all sides of the political spectrum that will take this painting at face value. We’ve already seen that in our political discourse already (see the “Obama Phone Lady”, or the lady who says, “I don’t have to pay for gas…”).

However, I commend you on being consistent with your position. Most people wouldn’t be.

        • rivers

LOL. Oh yeah sure, Rip Van Winkle Tempus. But liberals can’t distinguish between vehement disagreement and persecution because for them it’s one and the same, and they assume as much when disagreement comes from the other side.

        • robcrawford2

WTF? “Snipers Wanted”? “Death of a President”?

What’s the “metaphor” of Bush’s face with crosshairs over it and the caption “Snipers Wanted”?

Did you blank out during the years 2001-2009?

        • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

          Oh really?

That’s the problem with you intellectually dishonest Obama supporters — you are so poorly educated you don’t understand what words *actually* mean (instead you give them your own definitions) and you have the memory of gnats (so you constantly rewrite history however you choose to see it). Heck, reliance on your ignorance is how Obama got re-elected.

        • Maxwell

I have to disagree. Bush is constantly portrayed to be an incompetent idiot in the media. The U.N. wants to charge him as a war criminal, when really they have no grounds to do so. While I don’t think he is persecuted, lack for a better word, I do believe he is unfairly treated considering the luck he had in office, namely 9/11 and Katrina.

On the flip side, I’m not an idiot. I know they are people who are opposed to Obama because he is black, I’d be ignorant to think otherwise. But I believe they are a minority. They are, however, made to be the majority, and this why it appears Obama is persecuted. Any amount of criticism thrown his way is instantly called racist, making him look like he is being persecuted.

Every President faces opposition, maybe even persecution, it happens in a two party system.

Also, I’m aspiring to be a writer, so I hope the concept of a metaphor isn’t lost on me 😉

        • Grandma HeadInjury

“persecution” complex much? Second cousin to the messiah complex. Guess we can figure which side this one falls on.

        • Drummie

The only reason he is facing the persecution is his incompetence and socialist policies. Obama doesn’t know persecution, yet.

        • Lady 12

Yeah he did, and he still is even though he’s no longer president.

    • FranklinWasRight

Why don’t they paint a picture of Obama as Mohammed, I’m sure that there are other religions that need to learn the power of metaphor, right?

      • Katielee4211

And make sure it’s portrayed in a way that would be offensive to Muslims…but wait just painting it would be offensive to them.

It’s much safer offending Christians and blaspheming Christ. After all, we aren’t likely to break out in violence, killing, beheading and destroying. Nor is he likely to have a contract put out on his life.Much easier, and infinitely safer, to urinate on the choir.

    • rivers

No, it’s not, the point is, it’s a really shitty metaphor.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lisa.dean.564 Lisa Dean

If you’re going to compare this to a metaphor then you’ve just proven our point. This picture was painted to compare or suggest a likeness to Christ for Obama. Some of us find that offensive and we’re not trying to convince you to share our opinion either.

    • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

No, we understand the metaphor — you’re the one who don’t.

  • ked5

    • http://www.cosmicgirl.net/ Cosmic Girl

That only applies to conservatives. Liberals can do and say whatever they want because…well, because…they’re enlightened and stuff.

  • rivers

You just have to laugh at these people, they are turning into everything they have accused organized religion of being for decades. Did you hear about L.A.’s meatless Mondays, or CA’s auction to purchase (carbon credits) indulgences?. They do worship Obama, that’s why they don’t care what he does, just as long as he’s President. The outcome of this election did not come from a place of great intellectualizing.

If you start blowing up embassies, does that mean we have to arrest the artist who caused you so much emotional pain by insulting your religion?

      • Stephanie Warren

Yes, I demand equal religious rights…. pfffft.

  • Maxwell

While this does offend me, I support the artist right to free speech. Although, I’m sure if Obama were to be portrayed as Mohammed, cries of racism would follow suit, while the artist would have been jailed for offending Islam.

In the article the “artist” says re: the cancelling of his 2009 show:

“I always regretted cancelling my exhibit in New York because I feel my First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings,” D’Antuono told Fox News. “We should celebrate the fact that we live in a country where we are given the freedom to express ourselves.”

How much do you want to bet this guy not only didn’t blink an eye when Obama said at the UN that the “future must not belong to those who slander the ‘prophet’ of Islam” but was the first to condemn Romney for saying that the Obama administration shouldn’t apologize for the First Amendment?

  • http://granitegrok.com/author/mike Mike Rogers

Equivalence to Christ, I have a problem with.
    Crucifixion, not so much.
We the people are being crucified by Obama’s policies – I think we should turn the tables, metaphorically speaking.
