Earlier today in an interview with Mike Huckabee, Akin indicated that he would not be dropping out of the race.

Twitchy will monitor this story as it develops and will update accordingly.

Red State’s Erick Erickson is asserting that Akin will indeed withdraw:

According to Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith, a senior GOP source has revealed that Akin may drop out of the race as early as 5:00 p.m. tomorrow:

Tomorrow afternoon is an important deadline: If he files papers to end his candidacy in Jefferson City tomorrow he can end his candidacy unilaterally; after that, he would have to file an application in court.

We are still awaiting confirmation of Akin’s intent to withdraw.

Buzzfeed is updating its earlier report that Akin is leaving the race:

Additionally, Akin is still fundraising:

It’s looking more and more like the chatter about Akin’s withdrawal is stemming from the Missouri GOP’s desire to replace him rather than remarks from his campaign:

For now, at least, it appears that Akin is trying to ride out the storm, but mounting pressure from Missouri Republicans and from the public may cause him to reconsider.

    Please. Go.

    He needs to withdraw today.

John Brunner will be an excellent Senator.

Agree, even if he what he meant was innocuous, what he said was a gawdawful clusterff and will damage us everywhere else, especially with the Sock Puppet Specialty Dirt Machine in action.

“Legitimate rape” has become the top search term on the internet, according to Alexa. The video of his ignorance on display has gone viral on YouTube. The left is now trying to link him to Paul Ryan. Every minute Akin remains in race, he further damages the GOP brand.

This is not a distraction we need right now if we want to take back the Senate and the White House.

He says he is not going anywhere .. and I THINK HE NEEDS TO GO!

I think he should withdraw, since he only won because democrat voted so that Claire would have a sure shot at keeping her seat.

It seems she will get her wish.

  • Hello Jerry (D)

It’s a setup by that Wicked Witch Claire. No doubt.

Yeah right, I’m sure she forced him to say those words….dumbass.

  • digitalPimple

GOP announced they are now taking away the $5 million promised to Akin, to place behind other candidates.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Jones/100003992332480 Matt Jones

It’s a lost cause now…move on to other races.

The fight to end state-mandated infanticide is too important to have this man as its representative voice for the great state of Missouri. Way too important! Akin MUST GO!! Absolutely shameful stuff from him! Complete disgrace!!

  • mder4thegov

The night he won, I said Sarah Palin, who endorsed Sarah Steelman–in the same race, would be proven right.
Keep letting RINO’s in the Establishment (Rove, Huckabee), and democrats choose our candidates, and this is what we’ll get AND deserve.

I believe his staff are threatening to quit if he doesn’t resign. Obama made his first press conference in years to specifically pounce on this situation. Akin needs to resign… I still can’t get over his comment. Ugh, stupid idiot. These lifetime politicians need to go. I’m afraid of who would replace him… another GOP RINO moron?

  • Dio Heerai

Don’t let the door hit you Todd , I hear Obama is look for a new vp

  • eagle1jim

What Akin said was wrong. But, if Akin is forced out by the GOP Establishment, the Democrat Party should demand that VP Biden drop out of the race also. Biden is just as guilty as Akin regarding past rape gaffes. By the way, Whoopi should resign her spot on the View because of her rape-rape comments. The term, misspoke for some reason gets a Democrat out of hot water but not a Republican. McCaskill has caused our country a multitude of severe problems which far surpasses one “not so smart” comment by a Republican. If Akin stays in the race, Missouri voters need to look at the candidates voting records. McClaskill is a rubber stamp for Obama’s policies and Akin is just the opposite. America can’t afford four more years of Obama and Sen. Reid so McCaskill must defeated. If Akin had been a Democrat, he would has gotten a pass by the media and the Democrat Party. So it goes.

The people saying this aren’t paying attention to the bigger picture. We need to not only elect Romney/Ryan, but take the Senate as well. Fielding candidates who not only shoot themselves in the foot, but blow their entire leg off do not help that strategy.

Whinging about what Biden said is sterile and beside the point. Quit pissing about with silly tu quoque finger-pointing and stay focused on the long game: winning the Senate. After that idiotic comment, Akin became a liability. He significantly, if not irreparably, damaged his standing. Time to take one for the team, and bow out.

    • icowrich

Just because Biden once had a gaffe that had the word “rape” in it doesn’t mean it was the same thing. Biden said something incorrect about the rape stats in Flint. That’s hardly the same as implying rape victims weren’t really raped. Whoopi is closer to the same, but I’m pretty sure she’s permanently dropped out of any race for public office.

Yes, there is a double standard in the mainstream media, Dems get a pass on most things like this, & free PR& campaign help thru coverage & stories. Republicans know this, it’s just a fact of life….period….get over it. There is a time to just say, no, you are not up to the standard of a public servant – left or right. Mr.Akin, you blew it, you messed up, you fumbled badly, you grabbed defeat at the hands of victory w/ your words of stupidity and ignorance.
The man did this to himself. Sorry, no excuse.
Not a trick question. Not a tough question. Yes no, I am for this, I am against this, my religious beliefs lead me to believe this…as an elected official, yes I would work to do this or that….or I would follow the lead of my party on this issue down the line…. Period.
No, the man goes into some Howard Stern-esque act of making something up….what did he just say? Is he serious? What science book is that from? OK, he’s just a moron I guess. Thank you for insulting all women, thank you for giving a black eye to anyone who is sincerely pro-life, thank you for handing Claire a Senate seat again.
Step down. With zero money from the RNC Senate funds – that’s millions, w/ many of your top PAC donors backing away fast – that’s millions….exactly who will fund your meek campaign now? O’Donnell showed us what can happen when the GOP backs a candidate that started out ok, and snowballs into a disaster……that’s Akin, on steroids.
Step down. Do the right thing. If you can hold on your House seat, that’s on your district. Not the rest of us………

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Jones/100003992332480 Matt Jones

Yep, Claire’s gonna get another six years in the Senate.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/44F4AB4VSCTOCHBMBG4ZWWD5OU Laurel

Right or wrong the bottom has fallen out of his campaign so he should withdraw. Out in Sarah Steelman! THIS SEAT IS TOO IMPORTANT!

    • icowrich

He’ll be replaced by the establishment GOP. It won’t be Steelman.

  • Terry in GA

May not be “fair” to send him packing, but Conservatives have to stand for TRUTH rather than with this type of gaffe. I’m all for forgiveness and mercy (God knows I’ve often needed them both) but the mission should be above reproach. The opponent is Claire McCaskell and she has to go!!

  • brianmouland

    Has to go

  • BeeKaaay

Why can’t we be calling for Obama to withdraw from the race? Biden said lots of retarded stuff too.

    • icowrich

because he hasn’t alienated the same number of people that Akin just has. He just lost all of his funding in one fell swoop. If Obama did that, he wouldn’t be able to run.

      • BeeKaaay

If Akin quits, will the RINOpublican party nominate someone with brains (meaning NON MARXIST!) to take his place?

Marxists win. Marxists win. Marxists win.

  • PowerToThePeople

Akin is an idiot if he does not realize that this is a dangerous election cycle, and any distraction could give Team Obama an opportunity to win in ways they don’t deserve. Hey moron – give up!

  • mcgirv

I’m kinda getting that Christene O’Donnel feeling about this guy, but it’s a really creepy feeling. He needs to get out!

  • Tom Roake

What is really sad, is that people are more worried about what this does for the election. I would like to think normal people would find not only what he said horrible, but that he actually thinks and believes what he said. People that agree with his views are very sick and disturbed people and whats funny its these same people that cry for freedom, but they’re quick to tell others what they can or cannot do with their own bodies.

  • icowrich

The campaign is more likely to lie than the consultants. I’m guessing that means he’ll withdraw.

  • mzk1_1

If there is something wrong with differentiating between different types of rape, then please rewrite every single state’s criminal code. This is garbage; he made a medical mistake, took it back, but he is correct about everything else.

And BTW, everyone is misquoting the study.
