More bad news this morning on the economic front: The economy contracted by nearly 3 percent. There’s no spinning these crappy numbers now.

https://twitter.com/alexgerrard/status/481782250133266433

“Unexpectedly,” of course.

Blame Bush in 3, 2, 1…

  • YesterdayzNewz

Hey, Barack, the 30’s called. Yeah, it wants it’s policies back.

    Viva la revolución!

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Neville Chamberlain, as Chancellor of the Exchequer (Treasury Secretary equivalent), had Britain back on its feet by 1935. Then he became Prime Minister, and had the foreign policy debacles. Obama hasn’t even had Chamberlain’s saving grace of turning the economy around.

      • Determined

I would call going from losing 800,000 jobs a month to adding 250,000 jobs a month as definitely turning the economy around.

        • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

          Or bottoming out.

        • Kawfy

I’d prefer a robust GDP over jobs at McDonalds

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

That’s okay, Obamacare will eliminate those jobs at McDonald’s.

          • mrspinky85

Oh, those minimum wage law attempts.

          • Kawfy

right….15.00? an EMT makes that! What lives are being saved by the burger flipper?

          • mrspinky85

Its not even that. Paying more for something without adding value makes money not go as far. This will cause inflation, unmotivate those who actually went out to work hard to get an extra skill and make minimum wage jobs seem more lucrative then they are keeping people there instead of them moving so the next generation can get in.

This is sad….the Gross DEBT to GDP Ratio is 104.5540385% …so that robust isn’t going to be around here anytime soon. And Credit Card Debt is way beyond penetrating the ceiling.

We posting to mrspinky83, some articles that may help folks understand that China has done some major deals with the UK to trade Out of the U.S. Dollar and to trade in the Chinese Yuan.

You are assuming, without any data, that the 800K trend (assuming that’s even valid) would have continued no matter who was elected.

          • Bob Smetters

yes… I bet you will… If there gains under the opposite party, it is not because of them… if there are losses, it is because of them….. that’s the rule…

        • mrspinky85

Also, it has been said that we need to add at least 300,000 to turn this around. And the type of job we add matters too. Part time jobs won’t do it.

          • SQL DBA

Hey the burger flippers are demanding upwards of $15.00 per hour, it must be all good then

          • mrspinky85

Doesn’t matter what you make an hour without the hours. That’s how I think businesses will screw all these minimum wage activist if they don’t just fire them.

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Generally, you find that the price of a meal runs consistently equal to about one hour’s wage for the minimum wage worker. When the minimum wage was $3.35, a meal was about $3.50; now that it is $8.35 per hour, a meal runs just over $8; if the minimum wage is raised to $15, expect your fast food meals to be about $15, shortly thereafter.

          • mrspinky85

I heard its already that bad in California. Why pay that when you can stay at home? Which is not what you want to do when building an economy. But, then again food cost would go up at the grocery store too. I have noticed it already.

          • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

Eventually it filters through to everyone getting paid more and everything costing more . . . so, no net effect in the long run, just short term disruption.

          • http://steamcommunity.com/id/pwag42 Swagner

And I just passed $15 an hour, dangit.

          • SQL DBA

Well, it is turning around if it was growing, even a little, for the last few years. All of a sudden, it’s shrinking so there’s your turnaround. But, don’t lose heart, the media will help obama out by crunching the numbers next quarter. Think of all those jobs created in the last four years or so, just don’t mention all the layoffs. And remember, the unemployment rate is just above 6%, but don’t mention the millions adde to the welfare roll.

What would you call the record low labor force participation rate?
What would you call the record dependency upon entitlement programs?
What would you call the perpetual of cycle of jobs data that ‘failed to meet expectation’?

          • Determined

Your questions answered IMHO in order –
1 – difficulty in getting enough jobs – 200,000 to 250,000 a month is not enough (but MUCH better than LOSING 700,000 to 800,000 a month) and also the beginning of what will happen as more and more of the current huge generation of old people retire.
2 – the result of the difficult recessions we just went thru and slow, shallow recovery
3 – expectations are not worth much. each time they usually exceed expectations, fail to meet expectation, or meet expectations. they have not always failed to meet expectations.

          • Jill

Did you ever expect that the job loss extremes would continue in perpetuity during the recession?

FACT. I don’t think that word means what you think it means. What you meant to say was that it stopped a precipitous plunge. I notice you changed from “has” to “had” too. If that’s what you call improved…

Labor force participation rates are at their lowest since 1978. In April 200,000 people got jobs but 800,000 people were dropped from the labor force. That is just the most extreme example of many previous months.

          • Thomas Dobbins

And, actual unemployment has been over 20% since late 2009, and almost 25% now…you know, when you add in those inconvenient short and long term unemployed that the BLS doesn’t count.

          250k a month?

        • KhadijahMuhammad

Good for you. Most of us, however, understand that the economy is a) still anemic by most other categories, 2) new filings for unemployment are still in the 300K per month, which means we’re still not making very good progress, despite the fact that (c) the Fed is still pumping in billions per month which is keeping what hiring there is afloat.

In short, you have very low standards for your country.

          • Determined

Check historical applications for unemployment and even in very good economic times – new initial filings for unemployment are 275k to 300k per month

        • tops116 ✓Quipper

I would call millions of people outright leaving the workforce and a negative growth of 2.9% as signs of the economy not having turned around. But hey, maybe another recovery summer will pan out. Sixth time’s the charm, right?

But hey, whatever you have to tell yourself to prop up that miserable failure of a president.

          • Determined

An economy never stays positive and turned around – it goes up and down in cycles. So if it ends up going and staying down now – that doesn’t necessarily mean it didn’t turn around and improve earlier. It goes up and down in cycles.

Remember almost two months ago when the initial report said it was +0.1% growth? Remember how liberals like yourself were so quick to give Obama the credit for that growth, suggesting it was all because of Obamacare? Funny how Obama deserves the credit for +0.1% but doesn’t deserve the blame for -2.9%.

      • Linda

I remember it, yes. But who is saying that he doesn’t deserve the blame for the -2.9%?

No amount of crying and accusing us of terrorism or racism is going to change the fact that you morons elected an incompetent moron twice just because of his skin color.

          • Linda

You are one of those who contribute to make the (far)right look bad. First, let’s look at your exaggerated accusations.

            1) Look at the last sentence of my post AGAIN, this time for comprehension. Do you see any words that says he does not deserve the blame? No, you don’t.

            2) Defend your claim “attacking us.”

Now let’s look at why I say your reply does not reflect well on the right, making them look bad.

            3) Your derisiveness and overgeneralization, as evident in the words that imply that a) our president is my God (guess there must not be any Christian rights who saw this, to object your blasphemy), b) calling people who voted for Obama “morons.”

            4) And, of course the biggie: saying “just because of his skin color” is the exact reason and a prime example of people think the (far)right are racists. Making such a statement ONLY reinforces what you claim isn’t true…applause for being stupid enough to NOT realize that is what you did.

    • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

      • Turtledove

I’m not sure if James can do it. He probably voted for Obama twice. If so, not much hope there.

    • Diggur

The economy isn’t growing at all. In a linear fashion or in any other fashion. Inflation is rampant, people can’t pay for basic necessities. The healthcare system is in a shambles. Unemployment is rampant. Disability and food stamp claims are at their highest percentage of the population in history. It is also completely unsustainable to continue growing the National debt in this fashion. (A point that Obama hammered on during his ’08 campaign, and then he proceeded to almost double the debt during his presidency.) Allowing the Fed to continue to print billions of dollars per month out of thin air is unsustainable. We have never seen a drop in the GDP that was this steep except just before or during a recession/depression. If you’re not aware of these facts, then you do not have even the most basic understanding of economics. Or history.

  • mrspinky85

OMG! I am totally at a lost right now. Our economy contracts 2.9% but unemployment is only 6.6% and inflation is low with low interest rates for the housing market. Someone is lying somewhere in these numbers. Inflation and unemployment work opposite of each other. I just thought a report came out that consumer confidence was up in May. I would hate to be a trader right now.

Did I pick the worse time to want to start a business?

    • http://macsen573.wix.com/overdrive Macsen Overdrive

The unemployment rate is artificially buoyed by the low employment participation rate. Also, sure consumer confidence may be up, but from already s***ty numbers, that’s not saying much.

      • mrspinky85

Yea, so depressing right now. And you have to be crazy not to think these numbers are fudged. They also count employment in part time jobs where many aren’t getting enough hours.

    • Acethepug

Well, unemployment doesn’t count those people who have fallen off the rolls or simply stopped looking. Labor participation rates are the lowest they have been since the Carter Administration, and inflation is low because food and fuel, those things that are most visible, aren’t actually counted.

Basically, with a criminally complicit media not asking questions and a grotesquely-dishonest and corrupt Administration putting their thumb on the scale, the numbers being reported should NEVER be trusted.

It is currently above 10% and well above that. People are hurting and it is not getting any better. Wait until Obamacare kicks in fully and watch the economy tank even more.

It’s not good news if it’s 1937 all over again…FDR was re-elected in 1940 and 1944, and until this very day, he’s still considered a great president. In other words, the American people don’t learn!

    • http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/ keyboard jockey

That’s why we changed the term limits on US president’s to 2 terms.

        Yup, very wise thing, too.

    • Zach Smith

He is considered a great president by the liberal establishment, which means that they teach that in the schools, of course. In reality, he was a terrible president who did immeasurable and likely permanent damage to the United States.

Naive people with student loans think they are going to be bailed out with an executive signing order that doesn’t go into effect for another year and a half They are buying into the sunshine that was blown up their bu++s. <—- why not if it really doesn't help them with their student loans it still feels good. In the end they can't use their heads all they can do is make decision's based on how they feel and the democrat's know that's all they need to do to win an election "emote".

But the economy has contracted they can’t find jobs and pay off those student loans – because of democrat policies they voted for. Still they will keep voting democrat anyway because it makes them feel good.

One would think that, at some point, common sense alone would dictate that electing a man (or woman) with a little business background is a SMART thing-especially when the job is essentially running the largest business on the planet. And yet, read any MSM article that touches on money, prices, etc. it will always say somewhere, “Now that we are out of the recession …”.

Liberals must think that by ignoring reality, you can make it go away, or convince people who are being run over by it that it isn’t there.

Will people wise up to MiniTrue’s lies and throw the bums out in November, or has the electorate reached a point of terminal stupidity?

    • Determined

A recession is defined as two quarters in a row with negative GDP growth. we have not had that yet – so, yes, we are out of recession. Not that we can’t go back in to another just as we did from 2001 to 2008 under Bush.
We will have to wait and see what happens this quarter but so far it doesn’t look like it will be negative growth too.

      • eztalk ♀ENTP – The Visionary

YOu mean the housing fiasco brought on by the Dems refusing about a dozen times by Bush to reform Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae? That “recession”?

      • Rob

I was taking issue with the MSMs continual dishonesty in implying that we were in a period of economic recovery, we’ve been in economic decline since BO took office.

You’re familiar with dishonesty right? Like saying the recession under Bush lasted his entire 2 terms? It lasted 8 months in 2001 with the decline in GDP being %-.3 as opposed to %-2.9. But you’re conning people for a good cause, right? Are you related to Jay Carney?

And again, the Bush Derangement Syndrome. Implying that things must be going wonderfully now, Obama’s policies MUST be working spectacularly, since not everything was ideal in the administration of a Republican serving two terms ago. Why stop at Bush? Why not include Carter as well?

      • Zach Smith

Whose definition is that? Common sense (and the dictionary) tells me that when the economy recedes, that is a “recession.” Also, since the population continues to grow, the economy would have to grow at least at the same rate just to keep us from losing ground.

        • Determined

The same definition we have used for the past 100 years. Take a course in economics or research it. you can look up the definition.

          https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=defintion%20of%20a%20recesssion

Our population is growing – but it is also growing older so many more people are retiring now than before. lots of factors in the Employment Participation rate.

          • Rob

Well, of course people have always grown older, thanks for the info.

But the main “factors” you fail to mention are that liberal policies punish people for having families, and make it legal to abort your own children, thus turning things like Social Security into a Ponzi scheme/scam. We are forced to pay into it, and it won’t deliver as promised, a combination of extortion and fraud.

But then again, honesty doesn’t seem to be a priority with you. Determined to support the party line, even if that means you need to be a lying little dipsh*t.

“Mostly I post facts, actual facts”

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, that is good. Who knew that “facts” could be defined as “hyper-partisan deflection?”

Hey, you gotta find reasons to laugh when Obama’s policies are adversely affecting the economy.

“you can disagree with people – without having to call them liars or tying to insult them.”

Feel free to share that with Obama supporters who label dissenters as racists. Ditto for Hillary supporters who label dissenters as being sexist. Until you do that, you might wanna get off your high horse.

“but so far it doesn’t look like it will be negative growth too”

Stop lying, Determined. A new Press secretary has just been hired.

        • Determined

We were in a recession from march 2001 to November 2001. and then went in to another recession from December 2007 to June 2009.
My point was we were in a recession under Bush, got out and then went back in to another one. Just as I was saying we were in a recession under Obama and have got out, but that doesn’t mean we will not go back in to recession again. And if we did, that doesn’t negate getting out of one earlier.

          • Finrod Felagund

Actually, that recession started in 2000 when Clinton was in office. We had a recession at the start and at the end of Clinton’s time in office, too.

          • Determined

recessions start and end at specific dates based on economic data – it doesn’t mean everything was good before it started or after it ended. it just means they start and end on specific dates because of economic data and the definition of a recession.
2 recessions in 1980s – Jan to July 1980 and July 1981 to November 1982.
            1 Recession in 1990s – July 1990 to March 1991
            2 Recessions in 2000s – March 2001 to November 2001 and December 2007 to June 2009.

            Just facts.

Obama in crisis…now he’s lost the LA Times.

LA Times: We need an independent investigator for the IRS

Just a few days ago, the White House was dismissing the IRS scandal and the sudden disappearance of e-mails from seven key figures as “Republicans … floating a conspiracy theory.” That explanation didn’t fly with the Los Angeles Times, not exactly a bastion of conservative thought in liberal Southern California. The editorial board takes a “pox upon both houses” approach to the “partisan sniping” over the scandal, but also says that an independent investigation is the only way to deal with it:

    • Rob

No, no, no! You don’t get it. The reason for the IRS and VA scandals is because they didn’t have enough funds. If you give corrupt bureaucracies even more power and taxpayer money, they’ll all of a sudden operate virtuously and efficiently.
