Late tonight, the head of the Chicago Teachers’ Union announced a citywide strike of more than 26,000 members after talks with the district broke down. The public employees’ union opposes teacher evaluations, merit-based pay raises, and smaller increases in pay due to budget woes. CTU president Karen Lewis earned criticism from across the spectrum for her combative statement tonight, including a hostile swipe at public charter schools that will defy the strike, put kids first, and open tomorrow:

Nice non-work if you can get it:

Many Windy City observers braced for more violence after a summer wracked by youth mobs, shootings, and chaos:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel held a late-night press conference to express his “disappointment.”

Parting words from Rahm: “Our kids belong in the classroom.”

Many Twitter users are putting their hope not in government, but in … prayer:

  • Cruz2016!!!

Teachers union again thinking of themselves instead of the children…#homeschool

    • Jeff

We homeschooled 4 boys and it worked out great ! We didn’t hold anything against the public schools we just felt we could do better with individual attention.

  • J. Cox

Wait, what?Say it ain’t so..obamessiah isn’t going to swoop in and save the children?

The CTU is another reason for the failing of the entire system. No accountability,no responsibility,no education. If people still do not see how these unions are killing us slowly,I think we are finished.

  • Lidsamy

Than FAKE schools will continue to provide superior education to their striking counterparts.

    • TomJB

I can see the “fake but accurate” description working here. “Fake” by her definition means non-union schools. “Accurate” would then be the information imparted to the children of such schools.

  • George Hardy

they get what they disserve – God is not mocked – sow to the wind, reap the whirlwind !

  • TugboatPhil

Chicago Teacher’s Union – Who says you can’t screw the taxpayers and the kids at the same time?!

  • jetch

where is the outrage in chicago about the teachers going on strike because they want more money and less accountability?!? those twitter post just say “pray for our city and kids”, what the what?!? are you chicagoans so docile, that you just accept this?
if people turned on those unions, things would change!

  • Neil Murphy

Not sure who to root for, all the players are scumbags.

  • stuckinIL4now

What a drag! They had to interrupt late night programming on local stations around Chicago so the whiny crybabies on both sides could drone on defending their whiny crybaby selves. Guess none of ’em are gettin’ any sleep tonight. In two short years mayor ballerina Rahmbo has turned Chicago into a microcosm of Obama’s lackluster America. I hope all the dumbmass city libs who voted this absolute idiot into office are proud of themselves–their problems just expanded exponentially.

  • Dale Davis

Rahm Emanuel: “Never let a crisis go to waste”….You idiots voted him in there, now deal with him. Communist’s always create havoc, to solve it, so it looks like they are doing something smart…….Idiots!

    • Wesley Yelsew

The voting citizens of Chicago consistently follow the same path to destruction. They are well aware of what has been happening in their city for the last 100 years. The parents do not care. In turn, I do not care a damn about Chicago. Let them burn. Their children are being taught socialism, gang violence, welfare, theft and how to lie without guilt. The graduation rate is 60 percent. What happens to the 40 percent who never graduate? Can you imagine the hundreds of thousands of Chicago kids who were thrown into the world WITHOUT an education but WITH a diploma, let alone the dropouts?

  • Butch Knouse

What’s their demand THIS time? To be paid with blank checks?

  • Russ Howard

Nobody is looking at the obvious. Schools should not be open to keep kids off the streets and well behaved. That is a PARENT’S job!!!!!! They should be open because they are tasked with educating young minds and giving them the knowledge they need to succeed in the world. You don’t want merit increases? That’s what the rest of the world gets. You don’t want to be held accountable for what you did during the year? That’s what the rest of the world gets. You don’t like smaller increases due to economic conditions? In the real world, if a company doesn’t do that, they go bankrupt! GROW UP YOU SPOILED BRATS!

    • Michael Golde

You nailed it. The days of unions running roughshod over government are over. We need to get rid of tenure and make the teachers earn their pay every day, just like everyone else who don’t have the luxury of lifetime employment regardless of performance.

    • Ken Alan Draper

I think the people of Chicago gave up on their public schools educating their children a long time ago. with the radical union in place there expecting teachers to actually teach was like flogging a dead horse.

    • redheadgrl

I agree, and I also noticed a lot of those tweets were more about having someplace for kids to go during the day than getting an education. Just shows a lot of school systems have just become daycare to some parents.

  • stuckinIL4now

Forgot his little gem, snark, snark: CTU President Karen Lewis overheard whispering to Rahmbo, “Well it woulda been a shame to let a perfectly good 90% approval strike vote go to waste!”

  • Discontentwliars

    * Only the schools that value their children will be open tomrrow.
    * You have to be sorry for the teachers, they must be in dire straights to abondon the children.
    * Chicago should just raise taxes to get revenue they need. If you don’t get enough, just raise taxes. If you don’t get enough, just raise taxes. Those rich folks in Chicago will get the message sooner or later.
    * Sounds like the GOV would bail-out GM, but the children in Chicago can go without. What are these people thinking. I’m so glad that Chicago has the money to support their children.
    * GM should have paid taxes last year so you would have had some revenue. Eliminate tax deductions for all those business. Then raise their taxes – They are rich anyway.
    * yada yada yada…

  • Tanyanant Saomoke Hunsaker

There you go again teachers union, selfish. All they care about is themselves, I remember when my kids were out of school for a week because teachers went to pretest at the capital with their union here in Madison. This people have no ethic and selfish :

  • Dandee

Never let a crisis go to waste. We need to have Obama give a speech telling us it’s Bush’s fault. All better.

  • Ken08534

Exactly what did Chicagoans (sp?) expect when they elected Rahm Emanuel to be Mayor? That he would stand up to the unions? That he would fight crime? Looks like “Chicago’s chickens have come home to roost” (to paraphrase a popular former Chicago preacher)

  • lana ward

Aren’t Dead fish and Obama lovers. ? quite afew people have told me that now. Peas from the same pod

  • Michael Stohler

Fire them all, every single teacher who does not show up for work. The private sector will fill the need. More charter schools the better.

  • kewee

This is just what Obamination,s Buddy wants (Mayor Of Chicago) Violent Democrats that will get away with it & Republicans will pay Dearly FoR!

  • Michele Carlon

Every parent, should rise up and picket the teachers….STUDENTS SHOULD STOP BEING USED AS A PAWN FOR THEIR GREED…

  • tjp77

    The schadenfreude is wonderful.

Please, Obama, tell us again how wonderful the teachers unions are as they go on strike in your hometown, which is now run by your closest aide.

  • Booker T.

There’s your democrats at work. They are turning against even their own.Parasites, I tell ya.

  • Robin Riordan

This is great for the people of Chicago. You get to reap that which you have sown over these many tears. Have fun.

  • G_McDee

Hmm, Wisconsin teachers are working tomorrow. I’m not sure if all the WI Democrats that ran to Illinois over Gov. Scott Walker addressing a simuliar issue came back or not but perhaps they can pitch in.

  • KCintheOC

Chicago parents take back your schools- organize like the unions and start your own school. Show them you can do it without them!!!! Only when you show your independence from their union thuggery will you be free and you children will finally be given the education they deserve. Parents Unite and Fight Back

  • weRbroke

Charter up Chicago. Show America that CPS can’t do the job they have been hired to do and you are willing to stand up for quality education for the kids.

  • Jesse Carter

Give the teachers 48 hours to return to work. And when they don’t show, fire them and ban them from working for the schools like Reagan did to the air traffic controllers in 1981. American students are already behind in education compared to many countries; it doesn’t make sense to exacerbate the situation and put a generation of students at further disadvantage. With the unemployment rate above 8%, I’m sure the no-show positions could be filled with more productive teachers.

    • Ken Alan Draper

at this point they could throw in some illegal aliens to teach the kids & do a better job then a union teacher would do. I’m pretty sure the 3rd world nations of central America have better education then Chicagoland schools.

  • Kam Patterson

Aww, don’t you just love Chicago values?

  • blogagog

“Chicago Teachers’ Union set to strike, children’s IQ increases immediately.”

  • Timmy

Don’t worry Obama’s kids are getting their private education at 28,000 dollars a pop. All is good in Obama’s house.

  • Mark W. Baros

I would love to have a job like the Union protects, cannot be held accountable for piss poor work for disregarded school children and all with job security. Just think being able to say to your boss, “You can’t fire me”! In what world do these nuts live in. Surely not in public service. Sounds like public dis-service!!!!!

    • nc

Yeah, but there’s that nasty little problem of being able to sleep at night.

  • Sid

    Well , if 25000 walk out …thats 25000 new jobs created….Yea Obananna!

  • Donald Koller

The teachers union has stated it does not care about kids, only union dues. I say fire the whole lot of them.

  • nc

What kind of system has automatic raises not based on merit? And has tenure? And has pensions and lifetime benefits? Only a taxpayer funded system.

  • conservativehippychic

You know who never strikes? Parents that home school!

    • JoeMyGod

You know who never gets jobs? Home schooled children! (Not in MY office, at least.)

      • David

That’s because they own the office and allow poor public school kids like you to work despite being uneducated

      • Sailing J

Home school kids don’t work in offices, they own offices.

      • Wesley Yelsew

JoeMyGod….. Are you the CEO of Solyndra?

      • weRbroke

I personally know three young men, all homeschooled that GRADUATED at the age of 16, entered tech college and GRADUATED at the age of 18 with skills and a nice job offer WAITING for them. I can’t say the same for their peers who are a full two years behind them.
If you won’t hire homeschooled kids, it’s YOUR loss, not theirs.

        • JoeMyGod

Graduated from what, exactly? Mommy’s garage?

          • Jillane Kent

It is well implied that they graduated from technical colleges if you take a moment to comprehend the post. Furthermore, you fail to realize that most states require enrollment in an accredited program and hold children accountable via testing.

          • Mini14’sBlkStrat

            You really are stupid.

          • Jillane Kent

Rhetoric is not covered in public schools, mini.

          • weRbroke

They all have skills in highly technical fields, making $20 to $30 an hour keeping AMERICA running, what does your office do?

          • TugboatPhil

I think his “office” makes sure you don’t have aluminum or plastic in with the food garbage.

        • Pepperidge Farm

JoeMyGod is a well-known atheist homosexual activist. Pay no heed. He’s a troll.

      • Jillane Kent

So, you would refuse to employ employees who are statistically superior both intellectually and socially?

        • JoeMyGod

Graduates of fully-accredited public and private schools only. Zero exceptions.

          • Mickey James

He needs them indocrinated to the liberal way.

          • JoeMyGod

          • LisaG

Typical liberal. No valid reasoning or sound logic to back up such an asinine decision. Just a closed mind with teflon coating. Seems to me the best place to find children who weren’t “left behind” is in the homeschool setting. A parent has far more interest in a child’s educational success than the highest paid teacher anywhere. Just look at the topic we are currently addressing. I am positive I will never see a homeschool teacher going on strike for any reason. Can’t say the same for those oh-so-caring Chicago educators displaying such sensitivity to the needs of their students who, incidentally, are most assuredly being left behind in the struggle for Teacher’s bigger paycheck.

          • Garth Haycock

Are you aware that sitting in your parents’ basement isn’t really an office and posting all day on twitchy isn’t a real job?

          • JoeMyGod

I live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. My mother lives in Florida where nobody has a basement.

        • Jillane Kent

Do you hold the same derision for home schooled children who graduate from public and private universities? Statistically, they too complete their education with higher grades.

          • JoeMyGod

        • Mark Lybrand

Possibly because they wouldn’t be left wing liberals who are unable to think for themselves.

      • Josephine (D)

You know why I want Romney as President? Because I’m not confident that I’ll be able to find a job if Obama gets re-elected. I’m graduating from home school next year, and I know the unemployment rate for young people is outrageously high. Believe it or not, I’m not clinging to Mommy(although I do love her, as I should ♥); I’m actually doing alright considering I grew up in an essentially single parent home.

      • leah

@Joe…My son who has been home schooled all his life would be able to take your job AND become CEO of your company. Not to brag or anything. Just stating the facts.

      • Mini14’sBlkStrat

        You’re an Idiot.

        • Pepperidge Farm

@JoeMyGod is a well-known atheist homosexual activist. Pay no heed. He’s a troll.

    • gator

Chicago public schools have a 60% graduation rate.

  • radjahshelduck

This is why I still think Romney might win. The voters in Iowa and Wisconsin can cast their gazes east and south, respectively, and think how much better they have it than Illinois. And then they can remind themselves that by having Obama in the White House advised by David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett and understand that what we have right now is a USA run like its most corrupt, inefficient state.

  • Paul C.

this idiot running Chicago is destroying it, and to think he was in the WH.

  • Buckshot LeFonque

It is an index of just how incompetent the Obama administration is. A former Obama Chief of Staff becomes Mayor of Chicago…Chicago descends into chaos in short order…very telling and no relief in sight.

  • gator

Teachers striking, imagine that and in Chicago of all places. Look people like to complain about what they make, nearly everybody does. It’s human nature to want more. Everybody wants more. I like to think that maybe, just maybe, these people researched the average teachers salary before they made the jump into their given profession.
On a side note, Shouldnt the NEA lose its tax exempt status for using union dues for endorsing and contributing to political candidates, almost always democratic candidates.

  • Sandy Pfaff

It was unions like the SEIU that got Emmanuel and OBama elected to office…all they talked about was jobs for teachers, policemen and fire fighters…the rest of the world was forgotten. Rahm Emmanuel went to court to even get his name on the ballot because he got into the race too late…and teachers supported him THEN….I say groups like this gave these crooked politicians to the rest of the country so I for one am okay with them being treated like the rest of the country…and actually they are striking because they were told they would have the same hours as the rest of Illinois …an extra hour and a halk in their day so now they need a raise…are you kidding me? It’s not even the capital of our state and yet they act like they are the capital of the country…Chicago teachers…strike on…you reap what you have sowed…by the way are the teachers in Wisconsin striking today? I guess NOT!!!! Scott won now again didn’t he? and everyone has jobs!!!!!!

    • redheadgrl

It’s funny how they strike against the gov’t officials they voted for….

  • ratizbad

Never fear Chicago ,Hussein will make it fine after the election,One note,You will break the murder rate and then some,Maybe get a Nobel peace prize,Just like your leader from behind.

  • Walter Dill

Get rid of them and see how they cry when they have to work a real job, without the union holding them up!

    • Carl Dennis

      Dang right!

  • Randy C. Lindsey

You voted for Rahm and the dems. Live with it. If you think this is bad just wait until that bozo in the White House gets re-elected. In a few years, Chicago will look like Nigeria.

  • Randy C. Lindsey

Naw, naw, naw, naw! Not God bless America …

  • Robert

At least the kids education won’t be affected.

  • Thomas Baranowski

Rahm is dealing with his own ideology when dealing with the CTU, this is what everything this Chicago political group of Obama and Emanuel touch will be like in another 4 years, if not already. Teachers like every other worker needs to be accountable. I have no issue with them getting higher pay but they need to change how they protect tenured hacks.

  • PhillyJoe

So here you have a city that is broke, union teachers getting on average 71k/year salaries and ungodly pensions and benefits guaranteed for life, and these TAXPAYER paid teachers turned down a 16% pay raise?? I have no time for these teachers. The example they are setting is horrible and I hope the end result is a decrease in pay and the pulling of lifetime benefits. If I lived in Chicago I would move just because of the schools. To see the pictures of these teachers screaming like unhinged babboons is disgusting.

    • redheadgrl

Especially when the average MERIT raise in the private sector is 4%. If you are lucky. A lot of employees are getting no raise or 1-2% because the companies are just fighting to hang on in this economy. A 16% raise? turned down? I’ve never seen that kind of raise in the private sector, unless an individual received a very large promotion.

  • Darlene Dickson Paniccia

I detest the power and bullying tactics teachers have because of their great communist union. Fire every one of them and hire teachers who WANT TO WORK AND TEACH instead of living off the back breaking sweat of half the parents out there. Shame on all of you for holding the children hostage to your demands because that is what this basically comes to. It’s certainly already difficult enough to teach children in Chicago. This doesn’t help the situation one bit.

  • gator

Wow, they make on average $76000 a year plus benefits they receive. They wanted a 30% raise but would settle for 19%. $98800 a year. Only 60% of kids in chicago graduate high school. Over 80% are on free lunch. If performance is a factor then the teachers should probably get a pay cut. Im sorry i just dont see even a 16% increase, which was offered but rejected.

    • J.N. Ashby

Perhaps they should give them the ol’ Keyser Soze.

  • J.N. Ashby

So what is it they want besides more than $76k a year with benefits?

  • Josephine (D)

This is one of the reasons why I support home school. When Mom began home school with me, we lived in Memphis, and the public schools were awful, but we couldn’t afford Catholic school because of financial issues. I’ll have you all know that I get high marks in all my subjects, especially in English and Religion, and I was even published in a local newspaper when we lived in Indiana(we’ve moved around a lot). I’ve also learned stuff that they probably don’t teach in public schools, like anti-Catholic prejudice in the early history of the U.S., and the “Solid South.” I also support private schools, but if you can’t afford that, you should home school. And no, I don’t have social issues; I don’t have a job only because we can’t afford a car because my father’s an idiot(long story). I guarantee you, if I ever have kids, they will be either in Catholic schools or in home school.

  • Shawn Smith

I wonder if this is another example of Chicago values that Chick-Fil-A doesn’t get. Working hard and earning your pay, honest evaluation and facing down real competition—it’s no wonder Chick-Fil-A is such a mess! (Wait, what? You say they’re doing great? So how’re “Chicago values” doing?)

  • Botzilla

Highest paid teachers in the nation with the highest dropout rate and graduates that are functionally illiterate want a raise? Fire the whole works, disband the teachers Union and start over.

  • Claire Adams

I don’t know about Chicago, but I’ve seen too many teachers in IL receive 6 figure salaries, then pensions and health care. 9 months – just sayin’. We Do It For The Children, my arse. There will be a superintendent of a district with one or two schools in it. They have their own facilities, staff, etc. Waste Waste Waste. Quinn is trying a bit – he has no choice, they are so broke. But I’ll tell you, they need a Scott Walker there. The death threats must be deafening to anyone trying to cut costs and stand up to the Thugs. I hope Rahm has a plan and that this isn’t a political trick to help Obama.

  • BwBarrnone

And then “O” rides in on a horse, fixes everything. All Chicagoans smile and cheer the
“Great One” – America rejoices and another chaos crisis doesn’t go to waist. What great P.R. it is going to be for “O”.

Got to love the transparency folks, got to love it.

Now more then ever question “O”thority!!!!

  • Paul

A Leftist Teacher’s Union striking in a Leftist City run by the Leftist President’s long-time consigliere during the election season.
I have to agree with Rush Limbaugh on this one, it doesn’t add up. We’re likely to see the big 0 swoop in to “save the day” so he has something “positive” to run on.

  • SL

I’m looking beyond this. I feel ‘Tippy Toes’ & Obama are behind this to make them come out like the hero’s after this is all said and done. At this time so close before the election, I can’t see the goonions doing this, unless instructed to do so. JMO.

  • lainer51

Since when are my tax dollars going to pay for a day care center for YOUR kid? It is bad enough I pay the salaries of teachers, who now are on vacation!! Hire a babysitter!!!!!!

  • Barry Grant Kelley

Thought the Top Dogs Democrats were buddies with the Unions there…!!!
