Full statement from the U.S. Navy:

WASHINGTON (NNS) — An active shooter was reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building (Bldg. 197) on the Washington Navy Yard at 8:20 a.m. (Eastern Time).

There is one confirmed injury. Emergency personnel are on scene and a “shelter in place” order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel.

This release will be updated as new information is confirmed.

The Naval Sea Systems Command’s headquartes is the work place for about 3,000 people.

The organization is comprised of command staff, headquarters directorates, affiliated Program Executive Offices (PEOs) and numerous field activities. Together, we engineer, build, buy and maintain ships, submarines and combat systems that meet the Fleet’s current and future operational requirements.

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the Navy’s five system commands. With a fiscal year budget of nearly $30 billion, NAVSEA accounts for one quarter of the Navy’s entire budget. With a force of 60,000 civilian, military and contract support personnel, NAVSEA engineers, builds, buys and maintains the Navy’s ships and submarines and their combat systems.

Other reports indicate multiple injuries.

I am counting down to that as well. All I’ve heard that it is a male. I think that is all that has been given out so far. It’s early for the loons to be up and screech about Tea Party member.

    • Pasadena_Phil

These days it’s more important to establish the narrative first and then “discover” the “facts”.

Those two “possible” additional shooters, one black and one white, were wearing combat fatigues and carrying guns. No explanation why they might have been carrying guns in a “no guns” military base. Why don’t they know? What kind of security doesn’t know that they had two soldiers authorized to carry guns on base? Didn’t they sign in anywhere? Scan an ID? WTF? How stupid are they?

You can purchase rifled barrels for shotguns. To be specifically used with Sabot rounds. Basically turns your shotgun into a long range rifle. Feds and DoD came up with the idea back in the 1980s.

But the media knows jack about firearms. This will probably boil down to some schnook with a grievance.

Am I the only person who sees the incongruity of a “shelter in place” order for a military establishment? Isn’t the military the very people who are trained to go after active shooters, not hide from them? I have the distinct feeling this is a gun-free-zone of offices. Why would any military establishment ever be a gun-free-zone?

    • Guest

The vast majority of people in the building are civilian employees.

      • Stephen L. Hall

Undoubtedly, but it still seems out of place. I’m sure there are reasons for it, but it is not good PR.

      • Roto

True. Main tenant is Naval Sea Systems Command — planning, procurement, budgeting, system engineering, logistics, etc. It’s an HQ, not an armory. Most of it has a bricked wall around it and there are many streets inside the site. It’s like walking around old London, with buildings tightly spaced.

    • MarcusFenix

In cases like this, you have a healthy mix of military and civilian folks in one location, the mass majority of those (especially the civi’s) are unarmed.

It’s a terrible terrible tragedy that will be exploited and once again, who are punchings bags? Conservatives.

    thanks Bill!

Among President Clinton’s first acts upon taking office in 1993 was to
disarm U.S. soldiers on military bases. In March 1993, the Army imposed
regulations forbidding military personnel from carrying their personal
firearms and making it almost impossible for commanders to issue
firearms to soldiers in the U.S. for personal protection. For the most
part, only military police regularly carry firearms on base, and their
presence is stretched thin by high demand for MPs in war zones.

I was in West Germany in 1976. The Baader-Meinhof gang was still active and 7th Army had a building bombed as well as an Officer’s Club somewhere in Europe. I was still a PFC and stood motor pool guard. The General at USAREUR issued orders that all sentries would have 2 -20 round magazines issued. One would be in the rifle but no round chambered.

By the time that order went through Group, Regiment and Battalion, we had ONE magazine with no rounds, inserted into the rifle to give the appearance that we had loaded weapons.

Our motor pool was next to the base fenceline and there was a street that came from around some tall buildings. At night I’d hear small cars coming with the engine revved to the red line. They’d whip around the building and speed the 50 yards until they went out of sight again.

I’d step behind one of our self-propelled howitzers in case a grenade came flying out of the car. I also wondered if anyone had considered the tall buildings as being good sniper locations. (No one did when I asked the question)

The protests were huge. We had double guard duty, 8hrs on, 4 off, for about a week. I got a day of Liberty, which was cancelled and they sent a unit of us to help with riot control.
I threw CS grenades over the crowd until I couldn’t raise my arm, so they pulled me to the rear, and gave me a .410 riot gun.

I first reported to Ft Sill, Okla in 1975. Personal firearms were not permitted to be kept in the barracks or in personal vehicles. You could check them in with the MPs and there was an armory for privately owned weapons. However, we didn’t even have gate guards then.

When I switched to the Navy, there was no authority for us to have personal firearms in San Diego or Norfolk. We had Marine gate guards at the time but full vehicle searches were random and rare. This was during the 80s and early 90s.

I wish the reporters would just shut up until they get actual information. Ever since this started, they’ve been flip-flopping back and forth between one shooter/multiple shooters, shooter taken down/shooter shot/multiple shooters/ don’t know if any shooters shot, 3/5/10/11/5/10/11 people wounded, name your number how many are dead. They can’t even establish whether that guy in the tan slacks lying on the ground shot at the entrance is a cop or a security guard. Geez!

I can understand if they make the announcement that there is a “situation” and warn people to stay away from the area. But then, just say details developing, or something. We’ll wait!

      • Pasadena_Phil

They’re working really hard right now to make the workplace violence narrative stick. Even Obama talked about it that way. There are eyewitnesses who described at least two shooters, one white and one black, yet that is being pooh-poohed.

I just listened to a “terrorism expert” who explained that terrorism is very unlikely because this is a very “low value” target in a city rich in “high value” targets. Apparently he didn’t get the memo from that Al Qaeda leader explaining that no one is safe anywhere. It’s not about taking down targets but in terrorizing people where they feel safe. This is just like Fort Hood in the sense that who wouldn’t feel safest than those working in a secure military facility?

It may also turn out to be another Benghazi as another possible cover-up to control a narrative.

So what you get is people like us who want to engage and stay informed are kept hopelessly confused and frustrated for as long as possible, with the ultimate goal of getting more and more people to say, “the heck with it” and increasing the ranks of the LIVs.

          Sure feels like it.

  • ICOYAR

If ANY of the shooters are captured alive, give them capital punishment.

    • Roto

Yea, turn them loose, unarmed, right there in southeast D.C.

  • Right Wired

Liberal fascism has disarmed the very people who are charged with protecting us. God bless the victims and their families.

    • US vs. Them

You read that right folks – “Liberal Fascism” Cant make this stuff up.

  • Skirtandzy

I’ve already been seeing people call for gun confiscation. The saddest, most hilarious suggestion was to use military personnel to do so. I’d love to see just how few would readily be hired for that task.

    • US vs. Them

Which is why the entire “Any-gun-control-law-means-ALL-GUNS-ARE-GONNA-BE-TAKEN-AWAY!!” paranoia is complete BS. (That, and the “2nd Amendment was written so I can defend my country from tyrants” is as well. As if all the AR-15s w unlimited clips are gonna hold up against a tank. Or a thousand pound bomb.)

      • Skirtandzy

Oh, no, it is certainly not ‘paranoia’. Just look at California, they’re working on it.

As for the second amendment, that is exactly what it is meant for.
This administration would be foolish (so I would not entirely rule it out) to attempt sending tanks/bombs against the country, lest they lose all support.

        • Roto

Yea, California is going after those “unlimited clips”…. whatever the heII they are. :-)

  • AmericanMom

What safeguards put into effect after the Ft. Hood terrorist attack were put into place to prevent this from happening again (if any)?

    • WhoMeToo

      zero.

      • 0bamasnought

        Zero did what?

        • WhoMeToo

          ==> nothing. ~_^

    1. I hope they catch or kill the shooters/killers asap, w/ no more loss of life among the civilians & soldiers & cops.
    2. I am once again stunned that our defense dept., navy, military related locations are so poorly secured post 9/11.
    3. What is with the administration & officials so quickly saying it is ‘not terrorism’. Like Benghazi was all due to a video? Let’s just leave the ‘reason’ for later please.
    4. If it is more than one person, it is likely either terrorism or terrorist sympathizers or fired employee(s) or just a few psychotic men who hate everything & everyone & saw this spot as an easy target. Which evidently it was.
    5. Let’s pray they get these people fast & no one else is hurt, & all those who were hurt or killed, let’s pray for them, & their families. All the worried friends & family w/o answers right now.

  • Misanthrope

Anyone care to bet the Navy yard is a gun free zone?

    • Skirtandzy

It is. Only MPs carry there.

  • Chris

So I want to be snarky here and make a comment regarding the fact that DC is a no gun zone. At this point, I am just going to say that every Christian needs to pray for these people that are shot, pray for their families, and pray for the police and all emergency personnel for safety and the ability to get the job done….

Why not just wait until you can CONFIRM the name.
Recall Sandy Hook, w/ wrong picture of the (at that time) alleged shooter……..
You can ruin someones life pretty fast w/ a false ID.
    Former Navy employee? Allegedly.
Might explain how someone could get in so easily then, and move about so
freely w/o being noticed or suspected of wrongdoing….he knew everything and
    everyone there.

    • MNWoman

      Exactly.

The need to be the first to report something has somehow become more important than reporting confirmed information.

  • fireandreamitchell

So did Brian Ross go Google tea party sites for Rollie Chance yet even though he’s not involved?

    • Roto

Ross was so giddy that he could use the word “slaughter” again, he couldn’t type.

  • Norm McDonald

Upchuck Todd and his minions had better break out the lawyers….Rollie should go after everything they have. Very poor and frankly, disgusting display of so-called reporting…..

I’ve heard “inside job” several times today, did Big Sis own the rights to “workplace violence”.

  • BoscoBolt

Eleanor Holmes Norton spoke live to media – pushed gun control …

“With all of these guns loose in society, it doesn’t take a terrorist to do what was done today.”

  • TocksNedlog

THAT’S our F. Chuck Todd! Reporting the ‘facts’ before bothering to confirm them.

  • AZGunslinger

How can this be???? It’s supposed to be a gun-free zone.

  • neoface

This is Obama’s America, and he build it!!!!

  • fireandreamitchell

Obama’s NSA spies worked well yet again I see.

  • Anthony Clay

relax folks, its just another on one of Obama’s sons killing white folks

  • Casca

The Lame Stream media are just wetting themselves in frustration over the fact that the shooter wasn’t a White Tea Party member…again !
