Bam! As Twitchy reported, Netflix jumped on the lame and tired slam-Palin-bandwagon last night. Netflix’s Twitter account joined in the #SarahPalinFilms hashtag with a swipe using the low-budget film “Iron Sky.” President Palin-caricature plus Nazi invaders? Yuk, yuk, yuk!

Truth. Netflix, you are doing it wrong.

Twitter users also pointed out a little something curious:

Huh. Netfix does offer both “The Undefeated” and “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Gee, we wonder why they didn’t choose either one of those?

The backlash was swift and fierce; way to alienate your customers, Netflix!

Bingo. The insulting lameness of Palin “jokes” makes the offense even worse. Netflix has its foot in its mouth, but citizens are voting (or shopping) with their feet and their wallets.

Free market for the win. And the cancellations begin.

https://twitter.com/LibertyThyme/status/329715299601485825

Precisely. Netflix included a photo in its tweet.

As we also reported, Netflix representatives are doubling-down on the idiocy with their replies to angry customers who are cancelling their accounts. There is no hiding, Netflix. The internet is forever. People are fed up and they are not going to take the sneering contempt any longer.

Amen.

Dear Netflix: Can you see the subscriber exodus  from your Twitter account?

We can.

  • Liberty

I complained to a customer service rep but our conversation cut off when my internet took a nap so I started a new one. Both reps I chatted with used the same paragraph statement apologizing & a follow up shorter reply, too. I mentioned to the 2nd one that the 1st one had said the same thing so obviously they’ve got something specific to say. She said personally she doesn’t support political bashing.

Let’s remember that the people answering your chat questions are just trying to do their jobs & probably had nothing to do with the Twitter account. Please be polite!

    • teamfrazzled

My cancellation call to Netflix was actually a very pleasant experience -I knew whoever I spoke to had not been responsible so I wasn’t aggressive or nasty or anything, just explained why I was cancelling and how disappointed I had been to see something like that from their official Twitter account and therefore presented on behalf of the company. I spoke with a very nice guy who was very aware of the situation. He did not read from a script, was very understanding why I cancelled, agreed Netflix had too much competition to feel immune from their customer’s displeasure when they chose to stray from their business plan and use politics to insult half their customer base. It wasn’t this guy’s fault but said he got stuck dealing with a lot of unhappy customers today about it.

    • Lisa Stra

I agree and I was polite to the fellow I talked to about this. They have been told to explain they were just promoting a movie. Well – I am guessing I don’t want to see the movie either.

    • disqus_eric

Good point. The person you reach on the phone most likely works at a call center contracted out by Netflix. Don’t take your anger out on them, they’re just the middle-men, caught up in the big nasty caused by their client.

  • conservativemomma

I would venture that it is more than half of their customers that they are offending. I imagine that the type of person who finds this movie amusing does not pay for their viewing content.

Twitchy, Tuesday: praises athlete for speaking out against the tyranny of political correctness. Twitchy, Wednesday: praises boycott of Netflix for making Sarah Palin jokes.

    • bcompo

Let me help you out with this one. Netflix is a company that just “joked” that a Republican whom half the country voted for in 2008 is a Nazi. Free speech means you get to say dumb opinions and the rest of us get to call you dumb for saying them. It also means that when a company insults its customers, the customers get to take their business elsewhere if they so choose. Clear now?

      • CDUB

Boom! We can school liberals, but they still don’t get it. Getting exhausting, and great job BC.

      • Ken

Oh, perfectly clear. I wholeheartedly the right of people to boycott companies for expression they don’t like. It just seems like Twitchy and its fans like to whine about social consequences of speech one day — calling it tyranny and political correctness — and celebrate it the next day. Is the only difference whether Twitchy and its ilk support the speech?

        • Canadian in USA

Except when RGIII tweeted his thoughts on political correctness, the Twitterverse replied back with very vulgar tweets. When Netflix tweets what is considered a dumb tweet, then we vote with our dollars and move on – no vulgarity involved. I think you missed the point of yesterday’s Twitchy posting about RGIII – it wasn’t so much about political correctness (though there was some of that), but it was showing the hateful, vulgar, racist responses somebody received because of it – mostly from those who, admittedly, stand on the left. So, you’re statement is a non sequitur. Each of these instances is all about the social consequences about speech – we just choose how to respond, and usually in a more civil manner.

          • kobrien674

“you’re” is spelled “your” when it’s possessive. “You’re” is a contraction for “you are”, as in “you’re correct, that is your car”. Don’t feel bad. Seems most people never learned these things in school, usually by 5th or 6th grade.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

In any event, all you need to do is look at the ‘fruit’ of said speech. Does it edify? Or does it place a stumbling block? Many conservatives feel edified by RGIII’s comment, which was made by an individual, yet are repulsed by a corporate entity taking part in would could be termed as personal attack on an individual.

Look at it as a case of natural selection, Popehat.

Netflix had a mutation that lowered its life expectancy, so now comes the pruning of the herd. Or in their case, the dollars.

      Will they make it?

Well, they have to evolve through adaptation. That means getting rid of the liberal mutants in their ranks.

I think mother nature is teaching us all a great lesson about the survival of the fittest!

      • Ken

Oh, I wholeheartedly approve people boycotting companies that engage in speech they don’t like. Do you?

        • BlahBlah

Remember Chick-Fil-A? Just askin’. I’m sure boycott wasn’t a problem then, eh?

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Liberals don’t boycott. They have same-sex ‘kiss-in’s and dress up in large pink vagina costumes. Both ploys have failed miserably, of course, but one has to consider the source.

          • BlahBlah

Wut? There were no Big Bird costumes? Very disappointing. :/

        • kobrien674

Actually Poophat, you’re correct. I even boycott TV programs I don’t like by switching the channel or turning it off. You mean you don’t?

    • http://twitter.com/realJoshGraham Joshua Graham

Although its been laid out clearly for you pophat, I can not resist. Political correctness , a function of social perception and sensitivity is entirely different from the function of free market capitalism. In the free market, companies must strive to impress, please and win over customers to survive. Based on the customer base of any particular company, partisan political opinions are discouraged. The results are often free speaking, taxing paying American voters speaking with their wallets. Were you educated and perhaps less liberal minded these concepts might occur to you more easily, something you may call “common sense”

      • RedSoloCup

Poophat. perfect name for the troll.

    • plumberskid

Helloooo…Earth to Popehat. Making fun of Palin is a prime example of what is considered “politically correct” by the left. Hence, Palin-bashing is a part of the tyranny of PC-ness. If you’re looking for hypocricy here, you’re going to be very disappointed.

      • Ken

So: making fun of people is “tyranny”?

HuluPlus has more TV shows (and has them up right away, the day after they air on TV). Amazon Prime has selections up faster too. Both have good Apps for smartphones & iPads. Anything they don’t have, iTunes or YouTube now has. Netflix is dumping its library and pissing off its customers. Who needs this? And HuluPlus’ collection of classic films is awesome for any film lover, and these are the sorts of films Netflix is dumping.

    • peteee363

but hulu makes me pay for thier service, then makes me watch yet more ads. netflix, and amazon do not have any ads during thier shows or movies. i am hoping this was a big mistake by someone at netflix, otherwise i am guessing i will need to dump them. i dumped hulu after one week. also hulu is proposing making you proove you pay for tv, before letting you watch thier shows. such as tnt shows. if you do not pay a cable or dish bill, they will exclude those shows from your viewing ability. netflix and amazon do not do this.

    • NRPax

Even with HuluPlus, you are getting ads. After going through a few shows where I had to watch over five minutes of ads, get about three minutes of content and then back to the same ads they already played, I was done with them.

Can you imagine being the person who wrote the foolish tweet?

I can. She has been led to believe that everybody is a leftist. She was told that she is the 99% and that there are only a few fringe holdouts against progress.

Can you imagine her trying to make sense of this backlash against her by the majority?

I feel sorry for her. What do you do when you learn — in a very harsh manner — that you have been lied to? What if her poor parents paid $100,000 to send her to college to be lied to, only to have her career destroyed by mindlessly repeating what her jackass college teacher told her?

Hi, thank you for posting. We have forwarded your comments to the appropriate team. In addition, Netflix does not engage in political or religious discourse. We offer tv shows and movies of all interests and genres.

  • Marvin Nelson

When I informed the customer service rep why I was not renewing my subscription, she told me that Netflix has the right to express their political opinion. Although that is certainly true, it is not a sound business decision. Amazon Prime, here I come.

    • Joel A. Edge

She is absolutely right. And we have the right to avoid them with our dollars. Everybody happy.

  • detroit19

I know it seems minor to some but I think it is important that “average” Americans, “conservative” Americans, religious Americans, whoever speak up when the oh so “politically correct” left thinks it’s perfectly fine to show hateful disrespect for us and our values. I cancelled Netflix a long time ago. I wouldn’t cancel if I were still a customer because they dissed Palin, but because I’m just fed up with retail businesses getting political and thinking that we’ll still be clients.

Their product isn’t good enough to sell out for. LOL Go ahead Netflix, dissing customers for your own personal entertainment is stupid business practice.

Netflix would be wise to stay out of politics. As one of the few people to have actually watched “Iron Sky,” I want to mention that the President of the United States in this film was a caricature of Sarah Palin.

I had a chat with a netflix rep, she said the tweet was for entertainment purposes only, which is not a good enough answer for me. I already have Amazon Prime, so I will be discussing a netflix cancellation tomorrow with my family, and will most likely cancel their service, even after years of having a netflix sub. It is too bad, because I do love the service netflix offers, but it is overdue for me to start taking a stand against companies engaging in politics, especially politics that I do not agree with.

I’d be happy with an official apology from the company, but I’m not cancelling either way. Hulu is NBC, and Amazon Prime (which I’m also a member of) is pretty unabashedly liberal.

But I am glad there’s blowback.

  • http://www.wakeupblackamerica.blogspot.com/ goteki45

Here’s the irony in the epic fail of Netflix’s attempt to be cute at Sarah Palin’s expense. Sarah never said “I can see Russia from my house”. We all know it was Tina Fey on SNL who said that in mocking Palin who said “You can see Russia from Alaska” in which Palin was right.

    • Hiraghm

“I can see Russia from my house” will go down in history alongside “Let them eat cake” as famous quotes never said by those attributed. (It wasn’t Marie Antoinette who said the latter, but, if it was said at all, it was by Madame Pompadour).

Just finished canceling my netflix. I let someone know why. On my way to the redbox that I can see from my front porch. Tired of supporting companies who think it is cool to bash my beliefs or assume that you are an idiot if you don’t share their beliefs.
Comcast will be the next to go for me.

  • colchak

I would like to thank Netflix to make the decision to cancel my subscription that much easier. I was the sucker who volunteered to pay for it since no one else in the house would. We still stuck with the streaming option after they split that service with the mailing one, but once they started losing titles my parents bailed. As of right now, we are stocking up the Watchlist on Amazon Prime. Never had a problem with Amazon after all these years, Amazon Prime (which we already have) is like a 2-for-1 deal with the free 2 day shipping, and they have loads of titles (Mystery Science Theater!). It’s a win-win really.

The great thing about living in a free society is that while yes Netflix has the right to say what they want no matter how offensive, idiotic (especially from a business point of view), and unfunny it may be, we also have the right to respond right back. Free speech is great, but so is the free market. Their product has been slowly falling apart and I don’t need to pay $8 a month to a company that takes a swipe at being a conservative. I can get that for free from just about anywhere else dammit!

  • pogiman

What the truly sad part is the infantile libbie progs still think Sarah Palin actually said this quote. But, in their world TV and hollyweird are the real world. Again, stupid people, Tina Fey said that quote on SNL, not Sarah Palin. My God you people are idiots

My husband played it one evening and after watching it I told him there was only one other time in my life where I wanted to punch him, while giving birth to my child, and now after sitting through that crappy movie. Wasn’t it supposed to be a comedy spoof? Grass growing is funnier than Iron Sky.

I’m thrilled with the people leaving Netflix after being offended by their #SaraPalinFilms tweet. I inadvertently used (created?) a new hashtag, #CapitalismInAction. I am a libertarian but come on now, are you Sarah Palin’s fans upset about this movie? Netflix better be careful about making people mad. When you get fired from Fox News, that is a huge tell that your time in the spotlight is over.
