Oh dear. Libs must be crying in their vegan meals! Remember, they tried to boycott Chick-fil-A last year for not toeing the leftist line, and it was a total flop. Boycott? You are totally doing it wrong. The media tried to play up the “protests” (by protests, they meant one lone, sad lady with a wilting sign) and downplay the resultant Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. Not only did they fail then, but they are continuing to fail.

Chick-fil-A fans line up and camp out across the country. California is not alone: The same thing is happening in Utah and New Jersey as well. Jersey chicken fist pump!

      You don’t need quotes.

      • SpinMeNot

He does actually, but you need a sense of humor …

OMG, those kids just trying to some money to buy a car or a motorcycle or save for college are soo evil and hateful … they should just stop worrying about earning it, and get it from Obama’s Stash …

There, I didn’t use quotes, is that better?

      • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Actually I did, as I don’t consider disagreement with homosexuals being able to redefine the word “marriage” merely because of their sexual choices as hate.

I was mocking you and your viewpoint. That’s kind of what the 1st Amendment is all about.

        • Sons Thunder

It’s more of an expansion than a redefinition but why all the concern about the sanctity of vocabulary? Language is not static.

I disagree with your use of ‘choice.’ Regardless, what business is it of yours what choices others make. You don’t want to marry a member of the same sex? Great! It’s not mandatory.

I can’t read your mind so I don’t know if it’s hatred or something else that motivates your opposition to same-sex marriage. I have yet to hear a convincing, secular argument against it.

FWIW – I support same sex marriage but have no problem with Chick-Fil-A. How many failed boycotts have the opponents of homosexuality started? Most of the Fortune 500 companies include benefits for same-sex couples already. Remember when the religious right was going to put Disney out of business because of ‘Gay Day’?

          • SpinMeNot

I am sorry, but it is a redefintiion. Marriage in Western society is defined based on historical norms and historically, it has been between a man and woman. Western marriage comes from the Church, specifically the Catholic Church and the Sacrament of Marriage as described in the New Testament. A man and a woman.

Please don’t go down the tribal cultures supported it anthropology road. Its irrelevant to the discussion of Western law. Western law is based on Judeo Christian laws and Roman / Greek Law. Men did not marry men in Roman or Greek societies. Romans thought very negatively of a adult-adult gay relationship, but Adult-Adolescent homosexual behavior was tolerated by Roman society as a whole, but isolated mostly to the upper middle, wealthy and political classes. The Greeks accepted it, but did not recognize same sex marriages in their body of law.

We have already had lawsuits in the his country, filed by a gay couple over a church affiliated camp refusing to allow them to use the camp facilities (rent them) for their marriage. A recognition of same-sex marriage by the federal government will force Churches and pastors that choose not to contravene their articles of Faith to do so. That is a clear violation of the first amendment, as it would abridge the free exercise of religion.

Over to you, I look forward to reading your counterpoints.

          • Sons Thunder

I guess it doesn’t matter terribly but I stand by the ‘expansion’ vs. ‘redefinition’ of marriage argument.

I’m not refuting your points regarding the historical exclusion of homosexuals from marriage. While our views on democracy were greatly influenced by past civilizations, we don’t limit our current views, laws and social norms to theirs (e.g., women can own property, vote and hold elected office in the U.S.).

I don’t believe a priest should be legally required to perform a marriage against their beliefs. I don’t know the details of the lawsuit you mention but priests aren’t required to offer communion or perform weddings for heterosexuals and I don’t see how they would be required to compelled to perform same sex marriages.

          • SpinMeNot

With regard to the first point, we will have to agree to disagree (definition). With regard to the historical aspect, I am by all definition a “classical liberal” in the vein of the founding fathers, that is fix what is unfair, but don’t mess with what isn’t. I concede your point with regard to women — they are an easily identifiable group, that did not have equal protection under the law, and that was correctly addressed. Granting said equal protection could in no way contravene any aspect of the Bill of Rights. The same cannot be said of homosexuality and forced acceptance of said behavior by law, the 1st Amendment gets in the way.

EDIT: removed a paragraph, misread his response, sucks getting old.

          • Sons Thunder

Despite the progress women have made, the Catholic Church has been able to restrict the priesthood to males. Because it seems so abhorrent now, you’re unlikely to find many who would argue the elevation of women contradicts their religious beliefs. However, the Bible was frequently cited as justification for denying women the vote.

I love my Jewish friends and have a lot of respect for certain aspects of the faith & culture. However, I don’t feel guilty or feel I am denying their 1st amendment rights when I eat a bacon cheeseburger in front of them.

          • SpinMeNot

Again, the restriction (as you call it) of Priests to males is based on the Catholic interpretation of scripture — it does contradict the religious beliefs of a great many Catholics. Bill Bennett for one.

There is not proscription one in the Bible that would support denying a woman the right to vote. I believe you are overstating the number of people that used the Bible as a crutch for being against suffrage. However, the right to vote was not available to all men at one time in this country, only land owners. If you didn’t own a piece of land, you didn’t vote.

With regard to your Cheeseburger comment, it is a straw man. Two gay men, 2 lesbians kissing does not deny my rights as a Christian. A law forcing an orthodox Jewish Rabbi to marry a same-sex couple, or to keep pork products in their refrigerator does. Any law that grants marriage rights to a same-sex couple will result in lawsuits when a priest, pastor, or rabbi refuses to perform a ceremony or a church refuses to allow a marriage ceremony or reception. It has everywhere that a government has gone down this road. It has happened, is happening in this country. You don’t support such a suit (you stated so earlier) but you are a rarity. The first amendment restricts the government from passing a law that in any way restricts the free exercise of religious beliefs. Every time a lawsuit of the type we are discussing is filed, it is an attempt to force an individual or church to contravene their religious beliefs. You may not share those beliefs, however, that is immaterial to the legal problem.

          • SpinMeNot

With regard to your belief on forcing Priests/Pastors — I applaud you for that, the problem is that we are already seeing the UK making moves in this direction.

For the record, the camp lost the first judgement and has appealed. If you search for New Jersey summer camp gay lawsuit, you should be able to read about it. The scary thing is that UMC church is rooting on the plaintiffs. So it would seem that there are many on the “for SSM side” that don’t share your enlightened attitude.

For what its worth, on this issue, you have my respect.

Two of the planned new Chick-Fil-A locations in Northern California opened without a hitch. However, the one that had been approved by the planning commission in Mountain View, CA (home of Google) was opposed first by the gay activist co-founder of an app start-up and then by assorted leftists in and beyond the Bay Area.

The Chick-Fil-H8ers knew they couldn’t prevent the opening for reasons of 1st Amendment-protected political incorrectness, so they instead produced scads of bogus arguments about how the drive-thru window would endanger pedestrians and bicyclists. That gave a swing vote of the six voting members of the City Council a fig leaf to punish CFA.
