I’m really excited for our new Pope. He’s not as young as I was hoping for, but he’s from the New World, and that could be good for the Church this side of the world, and definitely for Argentina(which has always been Catholic since Spain conquered it, but could always use a boost in Faith).

It “can” be interchangeable, but “cue” usually refers to pool & billiards.

Obama must be green with envy. I don’t think he has ever seen a crowd like the one in St. Peters Square.

Praise the Lord, God Bless Pope Francis I. Glad to see he is a conservative, traditional pro-heterosexual marriage Pope.

hold on there… he’s also on record as blaming free market economics for poverty…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Challenging aspects of the free market is not quite the same as blaming the free market for all of societies ills, is it? He also condemned, justly, the perils of socialistic and communistic economic model and its effects on the poor. I admit that I have just read a bit of his biography, so I may be off base but his views seem in line with John Paul II and Benedict.

  • The Left Is Evil

The new #Pope Francis is a Conservative, I want to see the faces of the #Liberal media on this one they going to hate him

    • stuckinIL4now

Yeah, it sounds like they already hate the fact that he’s, yikes!–Catholic!

      • Dawn

This is such a ridiculous statement. But I guess rather than confront the ugly number of racist tweets from Republicans made about him being Argentinean, you’ve decided to make up “leftist opinions”.

    • Dawn

The Pope is not the kind of “conservative” you are implying. He wouldn’t think less of someone for being poor.

      • Justin Jurek

Neither would we, but we, like him, have little patience for socialists.

        • Dawn

Yes, you do. You also have no idea what a socialist is.

          • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

            A “Socialist” is essentially the same as a Marxist, or a Communist; They want a Large Government to control EVERYTHING (Every aspect of the citizens’ lives); They dictate what rights people have, and dole them out accordingly (especially to loyal Cronies); they create crises for the purpose of “saving the country with ‘THEIR SOLUTIONS'” by doing nothing, and making the situation worse; and, they enjoy the “life of Riley” while the citizenry is intimidated into taxation, “social and Economic Justice”, and forced to live with inflatoin.. Sounds like a CERTAIN FINK in the White House! Jawamax 8<{D}

I think it’s unfair to judge Popes on the “Americanized” political spectrum, as they dont have to answer to public opinion, just the judgement of God.

While there are “built-in” conservative beliefs on issues like abortion, marriage, and contraception, it’s very common to see liberal, if not socialist, views on social justice, as one of they key tenants of modern Catholic social teaching is providing a “preferential option to the poor” and the dignity of work (pro union).

With that in mind, I’m interested in seeing how Francis’ background as a Jesuit will shape his Papacy. For the sake of introduction, the Jesuits are well known for being “God’s Marines” and were very influential in lobbying for the poor in Latin America during the revolutions of the latter half of the 20th century and the extremely liberal American universities that they operate (Georgetown)

Must admit that the I long ago tired of the snide comments about the church I grew up in. The same people – portsiders, generally – who have been oh-so-clever about the traditions of my church would not dare to say boo about the traditions of any other non-Christian church. Maybe – if the likes of Andres Serrano had wound up in the East River – things would be different today.

On the bright side (unlike Pope Classic) New Pope is from a nation with legalized same-sex marriage and full LGBT civil rights. So he’s already used to losing to Big Gay.

    • Justin Jurek

No lulz whatsoever. Come back when you learn how to be funny.

    • almarquardt

He was effectively kicked out if his country for being openly against those things. It was John Paul II who saved him and made him Arch Bishop for his home country.

Even if it weren’t true, we can’t judge one person based on the actions of their country. Not every American agrees with our government, so why proclaim Pope Francis must have?

  • JoeMyGodNYC

Right now some cardinal is totally trashing his Vatican hotel room.

      Just another thumbs down.

I look towards a renewal of religious conservatism in New York City.

      • JoeMyGodNYC

Heh. Good luck with THAT. Clearly you’ve never been here.

  • Stone Bryson

Pope Francis I is rigidly a social conservative – no doubt about that. However, he has also always been a strong supporter of ‘social justice,’ which is a leftist belief system. It is not the same as Liberation Theology, thank goodness, but it’s definitely not pro-capitalist.

That noted, I think he may be good for the Catholic Church, perhaps even cause it to a return the membership to Yeshua’s original teachings. That noted, I think quite a few American conservatives are going be displeased once his overall philosophy comes to the surface.

No disrespect intended, I wish him only the best. I am, shall we say, a bit more skeptical than many of those celebrating today.

    • almarquardt

We can’t be all things to everyone (nor should we try). There’s not a single person I agree with everything on, so we can’t assume to not be at odds in one way or another with any leader, religious or governmental.

I’m not Catholic, but Pope Francis I is in my prayers; that he can lead the Church toward a closer relationship with Jesus. In the end, that’s all that matters. Everything else (especially politics) is mere detail — and far too often — distraction.

      • Justin Jurek

As if having the Holy Eucharist (Jesus’ very Body and Blood) isn’t enough?

        • JoeMyGodNYC

          Cannibalism is very sexy!

    • Dawn

‘social justice’ is a CHRISTIAN belief system. It is neither left nor right, though only those on the left support social justice.

      • Justin Jurek

        Bullspit and you know it.

        • Dawn

You clearly don’t know what social justice is. Social justice as taught by the Catholic Church is that all human life is sacred, inherent dignity of all people, value human life over possessions, and care for the poor and the sick. If you don’t believe in any of those things, let me be the first to inform you that you are not a true Catholic, let alone a true Christian.

      • GaryTheBrave

I’m going to address ALL of your posts with this one reply. It is apparent that you are bigoted against conservatives, yet I hope that you are open-minded enough to be ready to learn.

Conservatives support social justice by trying to show the way to a better life for the down-trodden. We teach those who want to have a better life how to do so, but we expect them to put in the effort. We look upon people as individuals, not as groups. We recognize that some don’t want that better life and we are not going to force it on them.

Conservatives do not look at people as communities. We do not pigeon-hole people because of race, ethnicity, skin color, ancestry, or geographic location. We believe all persons have the ability to gain intellect (as long as there is no brain injury), to gain wealth, to achieve success as each individual defines it. My idea of success may differ from yours. I have met people who tried to achieve society’s ideal of success and decided it was not for them. You would call them homeless. I look at them as the frontiersmen and mountaineers of the 19th century. They are the hermits of our time.

A Christian is a person who has accepted Christ as his or her Savior from sin. All Christians are sinners. We recognize that fact. Just because someone looks at the Pope from an American political perspective does not make that person a “fake” Christian. It is more of a sad comment on how much we have let politics enter our lives. Some of us here are making entertainment choices based on the political leanings of the entertainers, but then those same entertainers black-listed their peers that differ from them politically first.

Finally, Dawn, you mentioned the “conservatives” who made racist tweets about the new pontiff because he’s Argentinian. Did these tweeters specifically state they are conservative? If not then how would you know? That is how I know you are bigoted against conservatives. I hope this helped your understanding.

  • BeeKaaay

Now let’s see what the leftwingwackos think of him.

If they hate him, we got another good Pope :)

  • Dawn

A Pope has been elected to lead the Church and the right wing is sizing him up as if he were elected president. Typically misguided fake Christians.

Two days later, and I’m still amazed at what a total surprise this was. The media, as usual, showed themselves for the fools they were, first declaring “utter gridlock,” then spending the hour after the white smoke telling us how we’d see Cardinal Scola on that balcony.

Since then we’ve been thoroughly introduced to this wonderful man and his reputation for humility, and openness to the common man. I was among those who loved Pope Benedict XVI, but I’m also very happy to see that as he retires, the Church has found an excellent replacement – a man of true pastoral nature who seems genuinely interested in feeding the flock. I am among the many praying that God blesses Pope Francis with the ability to do so. I think He has guided the Church to a worthy Pontiff for the times ahead.
