Sigh. First, President Obama pushed the $9 minimum wage idea during his State of the Union address. Now, he’s pushing the absurd #LivingWage hashtag on Twitter. Today, during a Google+ Hangout (priorities) he was asked to recommend books and he asked, “other than my own?” Clearly, he doesn’t read anything but his own oh-so-important words. Here’s an idea, President Obama: Read about actual small business owners who will be forced out of business due to your proposed policies.

This deluded soul doesn’t get it either.

Give us stuff!

To help make it easier to understand, these Twitter users are pushing back with common sense and truth.

You are not the only one. Unfortunately, to achieve a more Libertarian government, we are going to have to elect them under the banner of (R) or they will be shut out of the process. This requires full examination of them and not latching on to empty platitudes. (Ron Paul) I would much rather have our elected parties arguing over how much freedom they CAN’T take away rather than the current false argument of how much they WILL take away. Spending is in that same category. Not only will we have to elect someone as President who belives in this, we are going to have to get Congress covered. Unfortunately, I don’t see us getting there until after the complete crash in this nation, we are too far ahead in the Progressive playbook and corruption rules our government.

Yeah, well even that is difficult these days. I’ve got young nephews and nieces who are struggling to even find a part-time job to keep gas in their cars.

Usually those who earn the minimum wage are just starting out, as teenagers who live with their parents. All this will do is price them out of the market, leavig them without the experience to earn a higher wage when they are out on their own.

      • $36544368

Agreed…that was my point…raising the MW to $9.00 will only help a little ‘in theory’…in reality, by the time you tax it and yank all the other deductions out of it, you’re not even going to realize anything being truly gained by raising it. And small business owners are going to continue to go out of business.

        • Native American Potato

Increasing minimum wage will have one of two outcomes for almost every business. With Obama’s suggestion of $9/hr min wage that would be a 20% increase which will lead businesses to either a) shed one out of every 5 employees and “redistribute” that laid off persons income to the rest to keep the the wage expenditures the same or b) give all employees the raise but not hire a new employee and also increase costs on products to compensate for the increased cost which when applied on a national scale will completely negate any benefit of the minimum wage increase for those earning minimum wage and most likely put them even further below the cost of living than they already are.

    • EastValleyConservative

Yes, it is. But minimum wage is not meant to be a living wage. It makes it harder for low-skilled workers and the youth to get a job AT ALL when they are priced out of the market. My last job when the recession first hit was not a “living wage” and it wasn’t minimum wage. As the economy got tighter, those who worked for less than me were let go, and I was given their jobs IN ADDITION to mine.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Also consider the number of places that will be cutting hours to less than 30 per week to keep from being caught in Obamacare.

    • GoSellCrazySomeplaceElse

It’s not suppose to take anyone out of poverty. It’s not a career, it’s a starting out job. If you’re still working a min. wage job and you’re an adult, you’re doing something wrong, unless it’s a second job or you’re going to school. If anyone here is planning on raising a family while working at Mickey-D’s, stop…and refocus.

      • $36544368

I get that…it’s just that raising the minimum wage makes some people think that they’re going to get a whole lot more money out of each check…and we all know that’s not true.

The term “living wage” is liberal code for “we must pay our voting bloc just enough money to keep ’em at minimum wage” but not enough to motivate them to seek higher employment. Once that occurs, the “downtrodden,” as liberals love to name them, will become middle class and realize just how much big government loves to tax accomplishment and millions of liberal voters will be lost.

Raising minimum wage will either cause over qualified people to take the minimum wage jobs forcing the unskilled and/or young out of the work force. Or, the jobs will be taken by the unsilled and/or young focing the unemployed over qualified people out of the work force. Either way the result will be more unemployment and more peopld dropping off the books.

Look at the Democrats that don’t understand economics. Wage increases mandated by government, without an associated increase in the revenue of a business cost the business owners money. Causing them have to reduce the number of workers. There are other impacts, but until you understand the direct causal result of a non-market driven wage increase there is no point attempting to explain those to you.

    • Kevin Krom

Frank over at IMAO makes the point perfectly – the TRUE minimum wage is $0, always has been, always will be. If government artificially prices labor high enough so that a business owner gets no benefit from that labor, bye bye job, and the wages that come with it. (And the tax base that goes with the productivity that job would have created.)

Please, just think for yourself, for once. A mininum wage job is a starter job or a secondary job. People begin at the bottom and work their way up to higher positions and higher pay. Students use them as part time during the summer, holidays, or at nights. Mothers, as part-time while they raise kids. They don’t require a college degree, a high school degree, or ged. In other words, an education. But, if you work hard, you can use it as a stepping stone to a new position or a new job, which pays more. It’s not ‘Rocket-Surgery’, it’s life.

And they think they’re smart because union public teachers protected them from Tag and Dodgeball and gave everybody a gold star. A Marxist professor later convinced them his way of thinking was “kewl”.

And that majoring in the effect of transexual humans on the indigenous tribes of Papua New Guinea would be a neat investment of an $80 grand college education.

Why they have NO marketable job skills.

Here’s a thought. Most people who earn min wage shop at places like Wall Mart. Places like Wall Mart will raise prices to make sure their earnings remain at a level to keep their stockholders interested. Therefore, the $2/hour raise does nothing but cover the 8increased cost of everyday items & increase the taxes those min wage earners are now obligated to pay. Doesn’t benefit anyone…especially those who get laid off, less hours, or have to work twice as hard for that $2/hr to pick up slack for those got fired over it & that $2/hr they won’t benefit from per reasons stated above. So, once again, liberal programs end up hurting the very people they allegedly are trying to help. FAIL

How about doing something to decrease the cost of living for a change? Internet is a requirement when it comes to job searching. In many areas Comcast (NBC) controls a monopoly over the area and tries to charge $50 a month (and they try to tell you it’s a DISCOUNT), just for Internet. My apartment complex tries to increase my rent 13% year-to-year and I have to fight to haggle it down to 4%. The cost of utilities and healthcare are increasing at unforeseen rates, thanks solely to this administration.

My first real job was doing sales for $12 an hour with 15% commission. I saved up enough to buy a house. I then sold that house and bought a bigger/nicer one. I’m not getting how people are so completely helpless, not trying to be mean. My biggest obstacle was property tax, which almost cost me my property. Where is the government compassion for productive citizens?

Since at least half the people in “poverty” are single never married mothers who choose to have sex out of wedlock, they don’t need roomates, they need morals and a husband. (two things the government will never be able to give them)
Why should the rest of us be made to subsidize foolishness? This is just insane.
Seems like high time to rewrite the “social contract” none of us signed, the one where morals and religion are denigrated, but we’re still required to be “our brothers keeper” according to potus.

  • skypilot77

The convenient part Mr O leaves out is how many union contracts have provisions which tie their pay to the minimum wage — if minimum wage goes up so does the rate of pay of many unions.

9.00 an hour is what them WELFARE JUNKIES make staying at home, add to that the food stamps, and WHO WOULD WANT TO GO TO WORK?? True none should have to live in poverty but no one is forcing anyone to LIVE THAT WAY. THose that are making minimum wage should not have 2 3 and 4 kids either but they do. WIth all the free programs out there to HELP those get an education and a better paying job, the only ones making minimum wage are the ones that DON’T WANT TO EARN MORE.. They would rather have the government make up the difference. AND When the minimum wage goes up, small business owners usually lay someone off to make up the difference, RAISE the cost of their product and/or cuts hours. SO EVERYONE LOSES.
