Ah, the race card!

First the author said that guns are a “guy thing.” Now, NRA members, whom she hopes get shot, by the way, are totally racist.

Contemptible. Seek help, Joyce. And stop shooting your mouth off. Or, your fingers in this case.

Perhaps she is following in the footsteps of crackpot historian Roger Ebert?

Twitter users rightly take her to task for her repulsive playing of the race card, and for her staggering ignorance.

And remembering the inner city riots and preparing to protect yourself is a bad thing?

    • $30423294

She doesn’t admit they were riots.

In her gated community, the events were written off as hooliganism.

Leftist elites inhabit a fantasy world.

And Nancy Pelosi can still hear the bad evil hateful words in the late 60s …. as Baltimore burned down… under the mayoral guidance of her father

        • Jack Deth

          Excellent point, John!

    Memo to Ms. Liberal Tool:

The “1960s inner city “riots.” were predominantly black on black. Burning down the lower income cities where they lived and did business. While the police and in a few cases, National Guard; watched cautiously from a distance.

Just how is that supposed to strike fear into anyone?

Oh, and the sections of K Street in North West Washington, DC that were burned down are now glass and concrete towers occupied by liberal Democrat (I repeat myself) lobbyists,

  • NachoCheese (D)

“Is it acknowledged that the ‘gun issue’ is a ‘race issue’?”

Only by race obsessed racists such as yourself.

“Most NRA members are white & their fears stem from 1960s inner city ‘riots.'”

Most of the population is white, so what’s your point in injecting race into the statement? Also, why is the word riots in quotation marks? There were riots, that is historical fact.
    ri·ot [rahy-uh t] noun
    1. a noisy, violent public disorder caused by a group or crowd of persons, as by a crowd protesting against another group, a government policy, etc., in the streets.

    2. Law. a disturbance of the public peace by three or more persons acting together in a disrupting and tumultuous manner in carrying out their private purposes.

Lastly, why cast the racial aspersions to the acknowledgement that riots are dangerous and destructive and any intelligent, law abiding citizen would do well to ensure they are properly armed to protect themselves, their family & friends, as well as property. If you need further understanding of this, go ask the Korean-American store owners who defended themselves and their property during the 1992 L.A. riots. So much for that “race card”, huh?

    • Ken Alan Draper

this woman would find breakfast to be racial issue.

  • $30423294

Not to nitpick, but that woman referred to the 60s inner city riots as “riots” — i.e., in scare quotes.

    That is fascinating.

What in the world were they if not riots?

I think Oates is revealing a deep seated fear of saying aloud what happened in the 60s. I’ve always suspected there was profound self-deception on the part of the politically correct left. Oates confirms my suspicion. She is avoiding a factual reference as if it were dangerous to speak those words aloud.

What is Oates afraid of? Why is a wordsmith such as her going to such extraordinary lengths to avoid speaking clearly?

  • WVS

Last I checked, George III was a white guy.

  • http://twitter.com/Beregond Tom Reynolds

Inner city riots of 60s led to Gun Control Act of 1968. Democratic congress and Democratic president LBJ were the ones afraid of blacks. The specific bans on private interstate transfers in the Act stem from some NRA members donating rifles, shotguns, and ammunition and other NRA members travelling to the rural South, giving them weapons, and teaching them how to defend themselves when the Klan (another Democrat organization) came around.

By the way, the NRA in 1968 taught classes, published magazines, and sponsored matches. The Gun Control Act of 1968 caused the membership to revolt and insist that the NRA begin lobbying to protect our rights.

    • WisconsinPatriot

Many more of us need to commit that to memory and use it whenever the “smart people” attempt the revisionist version. Well Done.

    • $24698634

Can you continue that historical thread through to the point where the NRA became the industry lobbyist organization it is today? Did the firearms industry use the 1968 Act as an opening to quietly subvert the NRA’s mission?

      • robcrawford2

What are you talking about? The NRA is NOT an “industry lobbyist organization”. It’s a civil-rights organization, funded by its members — PEOPLE LIKE ME!

        • $24698634

Oh, c’mon.  They are a marketing arm of the firearm industry.  Yes, they talk a good game about civil rights and the 2nd amendment, but take a closer look at the money trail.  They are not some benign do-gooder organization.  This is serious business.

    Joyce Carol Oates✔

Is it acknowledged that the “gun issue” is a “race issue”? Most NRA members are white & their fears stem from 1960s inner city “riots.”

You’re absolutely right it is a race issue, it’s all about democrat leaders in urban areas all across this country keeping blacks unarmed and defenseless. Why don’t democrat mayors and city councils trust blacks with guns?

  • http://twitter.com/dchrist81 david christoph
  • Joseph Phillips

Joyce Carol Oates continues her fiction writing disguised as her opinion. What a moron.

  • ceemack

No, the gun issue is not a race issue.

But Joyce Carol Oates is clearly a stupidity issue.

  • meeester

That sure would be silly of us white folk. When have black people ever been a problem?

    • JeannieJ

Okay, I get it. We don’t like what she said. For me right now, the only black person who’s a problem is occasionally my granddaughter. She’s half-black, and she’s only 3, so perhaps she’s only half a problem, but I love her, and this type of comment above is coming critically close to being a jerk type of comment. Meeester, do you really want to be the mirror image of this despicable woman, turning it to a “blacks are evil” instead of “whites are evil”?

Sometimes, ya’ll just don’t get it. Not every Conservative is white and/or Christian. We may not get in your faces, we may not be obnoxious about some of the things said, but we’re here. Same side. Same fight. Same fears. Same goals. So do you think maybe, just maybe, you can try to not delve down lower than the people to whom we object and say things more regrettable than the things they say to which we object?

      • WisconsinPatriot

Jeannie, you are right. We do sometimes feel kind of isolated until someone with guts stands up and demands some respect. I cannot and will not speak for someone else, but some of us DO get it. We are all in this together as well as works in progress.

        • JeannieJ

Thank you so much, WisconsinPatriot. My comment’s been a while in coming, frankly because I wasn’t sure how it would be received. It has been a great shock to me in other instances, that I became unwelcome in other Conservative venues because of either my religion, or the racial makeup of my family. Thank you for being the first to comment–now even if others are unwelcoming or hateful (which I dearly hope doesn’t happen), at least my comment received a very nice, polite response to begin. You made my night, WP.

In many cultures, it is said that when a person strikes another in an argument, it is a sign that person has run out of ideas. In America, it is the throwing of the race card.

She IS a fiction writer, correct…?

Actually it’s in response to the inner city riots of March 5, 1770 in Boston and subsequent authoritarian actions of King George.

  • NickGranite

Uh Joyce, most of us “fearful” whites don’t live in the inner cities, we just pass the popcorn when the lefties feel like they need to burn down their own neighborhoods. Besides, we’re not fearful, we have guns.
