In his outstanding book, “Columbine,” journalist Dave Cullen showed “how legends become truths through continual citation.” A similar dynamic appears to be at work in the wake of Elliot Rodger’s brutal murder of six people Friday night in Isla Vista, Calif.

Myth: Rodger’s killing spree was motivated exclusively by his desire to harm women.

Related myth:  All six of the people killed by Rodger were female.

Fact: Rodger was an ultra-misogynist, but he also detested men, including his roommates and even his younger brother. Four of the six people he killed were male:

  • three yet-to-be-named men stabbed to death in Rodger’s apartment,
  • two sorority sisters (Veronika Weiss and Katie Cooper) shot and killed, and
  • one male clerk (Christopher Michael-Martinez) shot and killed at deli.

Some say Rodger hated men only insofar as they presented competition for affection from women:

That theory, however, doesn’t explain Rodger’s utter contempt for his “geeky” male roommates, who likely were among those murdered in Rodger’s apartment.

* * *

Myth: Rodger used a gun to kill all of his victims.

Fact: Rodger stabbed to death half of his six murder victims.

* * *

Myth: Rodger was politically conservative.

Fact: Rodger subscribed to The Young Turks, a liberal YouTube channel. Imagine the outcry from the Left if Rodger had been a fan of Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck.

Curiously, some Twitter users are claiming that Rodger was white:

Rodger was in fact half white, half Chinese descent.

No, it has been confirmed by the Santa Barbara Sheriff he bought them legally – over the course of a year. And in all three cases he passed the mandatory background checks. There was no record of his mental illness, and he had no criminal record, so there was no reason to prohibit the sale.

        • praymorenow1

Exactly. California gun laws are extremely strict. LA, Santa Barbara, liberal havens….. This young adult man functioned in society more than well enough for years, w/ cash & cars & substance…. The problem was in his head…and how do we legislate that? How do we stop making the killers the anti-hero, the infamous legends the media turn them into……and create another such pathetic killer in the process.

How do we legislate mental illness labels & restrictions?

          • psycho francis

His parents called the cops on him, about his crazy videos. I’d say if your own parent think youre so crazy they narc on you, you should have your guns taken away. Should be a law.

          • Utopia Can Never be Achieved

I wonder if his father called the police while on his way to a film shoot and was hurrying, but he still thought the police should know. Yet after the police visit, there wasn’t any additional follow-up. What else did the father do? Did he follow up with professional methods? Certainly the rich have access to better mental health systems than the common citizen could get from a local social services group. Plus, the father probably thought if he could get his son back to a doctor, just a small prescription would fix everything and things could “feel” like normal once again.

          • JMG

            I think it already is.

It would help if we could first at least recognize mental illness. Clearly this kid was disturbed and had been disturbed for years. I’ve heard nothing about him getting any kind of treatment at all.

          • Bullet Tooth Tony

the reports are that he was diagnosed with Asperger’s long ago as a child, but the Kalifornians feel obligated to treat people with neurological disorders as completely normal

          • Ryan Schneider.

Ausperger only played a part in who he hated, but none in why he was deranged. Autism ALONE doesn’t work that way.

          • Guest

That’s because in Californicaton, the land of fruits and nuts, people with neurological disorders ARE “normal”. They fit right in!

Because it is normal for those people.

          • annoyinglittletwerp

Normal is just a word in the dictionary. My Asperger’s doesn’t make me abnormal-and your lack of it doesn’t make you ‘normal’.

          • DeadMessenger

He had Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. He lived in a group home with similarly-afflicted young people. His roommates were the first three he knifed to death. All men. Looks like the cops should’ve taken the parent’s concerns more seriously.

          • JMG

            Gee, ya think?!

          • annoyinglittletwerp

I have Asperger’s too. Your point?

          • DeadMessenger

My point was that Rodger had Asperger’s. This is what is known as a statement of fact.

          • annoyinglittletwerp

And his Asperger’s had no bearing on what he did. Asperger’s doesn’t make you violent. I have a CHL. A lot of Aspies do.

          • DeadMessenger

My point was that Rodger had Asperger’s. This is what is known as a statement of fact.

          • JMG

And THAT, my friend, is the absolute ESSENCE of the matter. Bravo! Yours is the most sensible comment on here (besides mine, of course). 😉

          • Bullet Tooth Tony

He was diagnosed with Asperger’s long ago. But in California, it is a requirement to treat people with neurological disorders as completely normal, even if it means contradicting the state’s firearms restrictions; he never should have passed the screening in the first place. Hell, the way things have become, it wouldn’t surprise me any more to learn that they gave him the gun fully knowing about his Asperger’s in the hopes that he’d do something like this for their anti-gun propaganda.

          • Ryan Schneider.

I have Ausbergers, and it does NOT affect my ability to use a gun responsibly. This guy had far worse issues, his communication problems only contributed to who he hated, not why.

          • annoyinglittletwerp

            I also have Asperger’s. I also have a CHL.

          • Nonameworks

“Aspergers” is not something which would preclude owning a firearm. Educate yourself. A fair number of engineers and geeks have Aspergers — and aspies are responsible functioning people.

This guy was seriously mentally disturbed.

          • JMG

Hmmm, interesting thesis. You sound as crazy as he was. Lol. 😉

          • mike_in_kosovo

            fully knowing about his Asperger’s

If they ‘fully knew about his Asperger’s’, they would have known that it’s *NOT* a violent condition.

          • Mark Littleton Sr

You cannot legislate what is God’s in Caesar’s house. Look at our past for nearly two hundred years we honored the God of the bible. Since the sixties we have rejected Him. Obvious to few I suppose. Hosea 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” We as a people have rejected the only Truth Elliot needed. Elliot is us at our most raw. A product of the lost culture war. Like sheep we have all turned to our own way. It’s not mental illness but a sin problem. We have rejected God and glorified this vain culture. It permeates even the best of us. Bless the souls of those lost and their families. Bless Elliot’s soul as well who was rejected not by women but by a society now left to its own and that has signed a pact with the devil. Elliot’s poor soul had no foundation but that built on sand. God forgive us especially those of us that have been shown the Light but fearfully continue to hide it in fear of persecution from this evil generation.

          • Ryan Schneider.

As an AS man myself, I can say my faith has helped me to cope with the bewildering sexual contradictions of this insane age. I lived at a similar high function autism community for a few years in Provo Utah, but with a big difference: the Provo facility was strongly faith based, while this California house was a secular, liberal run place. Liberal culture celebrates sex as a right and unhealthy to live without, yet promotes a narcissistic feminism that only sleeps around with golden tounged Adonis’s. Rodgers looked handsome enough, and was certainly rich enough, but shallow sorority girls have their pick of such guys. So the deciding factor was his egg head’s tounge. We are pathologically adverse to small talk, yet at the same time, we like to socially connect, so we try hard to make all conversation deep. This can be exhausting for even the most patient non autistic friends to keep up with, who sometimes would like to talk sport statistics, or the latest fashions, just to give their brains a rest. My brain just keeps going and going, and my mouth follows along. It took me a long time to grasp my problem, and Rodgers rant reminds me of fairly typical frustrations, except there is a subtext of malice that I have only encountered once before, but that boy strikes me as too stupid to do something like this. Learning humility through faith is essential, as well as patience to know that somewhere, there is a good girl for me. And as a Catholic, I know that there is nothing evil or unhealthy in celibacy.

          • JMG

Ryan, I praise you and Mark. Thank you so much for your incredibly insightful comments. Your words give us hope. Whoa – so Jerry Brown’s policies failed us again.
Accepting what you say is true, it means that when he had the interview on April 30 for the 5150 evaluation, the Sheriff should have known that he had three guns and a whole boat load of ammo. That along with the videos should have been enough to rubber room this guy for a couple of day or at least force him to seek professional help.
California has a special unit that finds and takes guns away from the mentally ill.
          BIG FAIL JERRY.

and trusted with my squadmates as young as 17, to secure weapons designed .to destroy entire cities, industrial districts, naval bases….etc… from enemy

Try and sleep well at that age, knowing possibly millions of lives depended on you being ruthlessly professional, zero tolerance for mistakes, or unreliable airmen.. you could call it high stress…

Compared to the stress of fame, money…. the stakes were a bit higher for some of us… some couldn’t handle it, and were moved to less dangerous positions,.. like cooks, clerks.. but we were expected to watch each other for the warning signs… excessive drinking, distancing friends, withdrawal from the group…

      • Mark81150 Never/Trump/Hillary

More than you’d think.. though certainly far fewer than the reverse… women aren’t expected by the culture to do it, or conditioned as men are to be expendable.. it’s simply expected, like in the Batman theater shooting, literaly dozens of men threw themselves over their girlfriends, wives…

We agree, it’s something these “feminists” need to think about when they go off on how disgusting all men are.. if an entire gender is conditioned to sacrifice itself for you,… maybe when one guy goes lunatic you can cut the rest of us some slack.

What six GIRLS???? He killed more men than women you dolt!!!

  • Jay Stevens

Yet another mass killing (three shot and three stabbed) committed by a liberal yet blamed on the GOP and NRA . . .

    Makes perfect sense to me.

    • grumpyhillbilly

The stabbings are being left out of this hate crime narrative. From what I gather the gruesome knife murders began the spree. Can you imagine the difference it would have made if one of these girls was a conservative and gun toting?

      • tedlv

4 of the victims were male. Are you referring to them as “girls”?

        • MrSnuggles2k2

Not necessarily an insult to a leftist feminine “male”.

        • Ken Alan Draper

Where I live these metrosexuals would be referred to as girls.

Loughner, Lanza, Holmes, Rodger. There’s your data points. And it’s got nothing to do with political ideology.

    • RJ

Key, if i were a liberal i would be trying to deflect from his political ideology too… but its proof that liberal ideology is morally bankrupt and is an abject failure

      • keyboard jockey

You think the liberals are feeling guilty, and just trying to muddy the waters by claiming he’s a right winger? He stabbed half of his victims so besides gun grabbing -knives are next? This doesn’t help their gun grabbing agenda.

We are going to find that “Rodger” just like the other’s were exhibiting warning signals that everyone “close” to them was ignoring – just like the others. We get to learn after the fact that they were already scaring people.

        • MrSnuggles2k2

Leftists will always lie about any incident that doesn’t naturally assist their agenda. In this case, they lie and say that a California born, hollywood raised, biracial narcissist is a “right wing NRA gun nut” killed 6 sorority girls with a gun.

          • keyboard jockey

It’s like clock work, now we get to hear about how “sick” he was and needed a psychiatrist, because there is an unspoken rule on the left that no one can be judged. They can’t admit to themselves that evil exist because that would be making a value judgement.

Evil does exist, and it’s got nothing to do with access to guns.

So, once again, one of the sons of the liberal elite goes on a mass murder spree, and it is the fault of the conservatives. Riiiiiiiiiiight. Doesn’t have anything with the way you raised your son. Got to blame the NRA for your poor parenting skills.

A better question: When will Americans abandon the entitlement culture in general? This spoiled Hollywood kid was raised in a culture where it was “unfair” if he didn’t get everything he wanted.

If he had been raised with real values, this would not have happened.

          • MightyMayhem

Schizophrenia generally manifests in the early/mid 20’s. My neighbor is currently dealing with the difficulty of getting a mentally ill son help against his will. After months of being turned away by social services (he’s 25) and terrified he was going to completely snap, he finally destroyed the house (and his hands) bad enough to need medical attention. The hospital put a psych hold on him when they arrived and they are now desperately looking for a bed for him. The reality of the situation is that if your child has reached 18 and doesn’t realize he’s gone off the deep end, there is really not much you can do until the behavior is bizarre and well documented enough to push for commitment.

  • Heroic Hal

Oooh, conspiracy theory! Let’s take dumb statements made out of ignorance by random dopes on Twitter and pretend that they are all “What The Left [oooh, The Left] wants you TO BELIEVE”. As though as soon as the spree happened, The Left ALL got together in a room and had a summit to decide what opinions to hold en masse about the killer’s background.

    • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

You know better– it’s an example of how confirmation bias shows up anytime people decide to jump to conclusions. We’re not doing so– merely pointing out those others who have done.

      Nice deflection there, Sparky.

      • Heroic Hal

Your reply says nothing that contradicts what I said. Yes, the article points out people who have jumped to conclusions. The *title* of the article jumps to the conclusion that there is a “the Left” that, as though a single entity, “wants” people to believe such-and-such falsehoods that, in the title, are elevated to the status of “myths”.

        • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

There is most certainly a state of mind that, for lack of a better term for it, can be called The Left, as if it were a monolith. Loosely defined, it is not a coherent political movement so much as it is a belief in collective guilt and collective redemption, as if the act of an individual were not his and his alone. It is THIS Left that I believe the headline refers to– at any rate, that’s how I took it.

        • equityatwork

you can’t reason with some folks mate

    • TocksNedlog

The point is that this is what SOME uninformed idiots on the left DO believe.

      • Heroic Hal

My point is that there are uninformed idiots on all portions of the political spectrum, and a random sampling of any of their individual idiocies does not, as the title of the article implies, amount to a mass entity known as The Left that “wants” people to “believe” such-and-such falsehoods.

        • TocksNedlog

You’re being overly precise. While, no doubt, some of the tweets are indicative of young angry people for whom OUTRAGE is all, and fact-checking is nearly non-existent, it’s undeniable that several politically active people with a left-of-center ideology are tweeting and re-tweeting these falsehoods in order to advance a ‘war on women’ agenda.
          Hence, today’s ‘trending’ hashtag (#YesAllWomen).

    • carla5731

It goes beyond Twitter and is a well-established pattern even among journalists. That same mentality caused ABC News’ Brian Ross to link the Aurora, CO shooting to the Tea Party when he found the name Jim Holmes on a Tea Party website. He didn’t have any evidence the two James Holmeses were the same person, but the story fit Ross’ left-leaning narrative and he ran with it.

      • Heroic Hal

It is a well-established pattern that people go off on wild goose chases, yes. It’s a well-established pattern among *all* factions on the political spectrum. It’s general human folly, not a product of The Left. Just look at Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Bill O’Reilly for an ongoing flow of examples of great blind leaps to conclusions.

        • carla5731

Every time someone wants to defend liberal journalism they always counter with one news outlet, Fox, and list of conservative commentators, not reporters. I see that you chose Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly.

You should compare news to news. For instance, the LA Times had a headline about the Rodger story that said ” 7 dead in drive-by shootings near UC Santa Barbara.” Are they just crappy reporters or did they mean obscure the fact that three men were stabbed to death?

What do you think of Ezra Klein’s JournoList? Klein was able to assemble a group of 400 people, many of them reporters as the name implies, so they could collude on producing the same messaging and undermine conservative candidates. That fits the definition of a hive mind.

Here’s an article you should read: Washington Post Falls For Left-Wing Fraud, Embarrasses Itself

The last paragraph is enlightening: “Who is Post reporter Juliet Eilperin? Among other things, she is married to Andrew Light, who writes on climate policy for the Center for American Progress. The Center for American Progress is an Obama administration front group headed by John Podesta, who is a “special advisor” to the Obama administration. CAP’s web site, Think Progress, has carried out a years-long vendetta against the Koch brothers that has focused largely on the environment.”

    • LegalizeShemp

Yes, that’s what leftists do, they all get together in an electronic room and delude themselves into thinking the crime was due to right wing hate groups. This allows them to reassure themselves that the social detritus responsible for the crime was not the product of liberal groups, policies or education and allows them to advance their political agenda.

      • Heroic Hal

As opposed to what rightists do? Seriously?

        • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

The facts are that this kid had a liberal daddy and like all liberals had a sense of entitlement, and when he didn’t get what he felt entitled to, he went on a killing spree. But go ahead and pretend he isn’t a left-winger. Just like you libs did with Lanza and Holmes.

    • coolreasoning

And Journolist never existed, right? I’m sure it wasn’t reconstituted in some other form either, right? They just walked away and no longer collude?
Funny how not a single story in the national or local media leads off with the fact that half of the dead victims were stabbed. I’ve read quite a few stories written as late as today that do not mention the stabbings at all. They just say “6 killed” and then go into details about the guns recovered.
This reeks of “White Hispanic” all over again.

Will we ever spend this much time on the names & faces of those killed? I hate it when we give the pathetic killers the infamy they so desired…..

Have any of these people been to Isla VIsta or UCSB or SBCC, where he was a student? UCSB is a gorgeous, literally beachside campus, that is hard to get into, & yes, a popular party school too. I’m sure it has an active, attractive greek & overall social side to it, how can it not…it’s Santa Barbara. Isla Vista is famous for being a party central, school driven location – decades of this. Evidently, this adult man couldn’t break into that enough?

This guy was a jr. college student, not a UCSB student at 22….which I’m sure ticked him off. He had a lot of regard for himself obviously, & major issues. HIs family called police last month. OK. Did the family physically intervene after that to get him home, or in a facility?

California & Santa Barbara & LA, all gun control, strict gun restriction havens….not NRA central at all. Just the opposite. The father of the slain young man is in sorrow & has every right to vent. But, he is wrong to blame the NRA for this….not in this state anyway.

Someone along the way, should have said ‘no’. to him a lot more.

Remember guys, liberals will continue to remind you that “you do not have a right to women’s bodies”, but after they file for divorce, they’ll be the first to attempt to take all of your stuff, but usually, they only end up with half of it. Let’s review, men have a right to nothing, women have the right to take half of eveything you own.

    • MightyMayhem

Hmmm. People who have something worth protecting when they get married usually have prenups and a couple that builds a life together should split the loot of that life if they part ways. I find it concerning that you feel like you have a right to access other people’s bodies because a woman took more tangible goods out of a marriage than you thought was her due. In fact, that’s a little rapey, sir. Remember, a successful woman has to surrender half her earnings and pay palimony to an ex husband that has filled the homemaker/support role too.

  • Patrick Klocek

Hollywood created the intellectual climate that led to this lone lunatic. It is Hollywood that cultivated the idea of sexual entitlement. The 1960s creation of “free love” was really a simple cover for male responsibility-free sex and the ultimate objectification of women. Marriage actually spared women much of that object-status. The divorce of sex from marriage lowered the relative “cost” of sex for men and gave many the impression — like this Hollywood loser — that sex was abundant and therefore access to it was a basic right.

    • LegalizeShemp

Yes it’s like Steve Martin in “The Lonely Guy”. When you’re in a woman slump, you seem to look around and see nothing but other men scoring chicks left and right. It’s an illusion of course, you forget most of those men are even more miserable than you are.

Still pushing that “watching violence doesn’t make people more violent” stuff? I’ll bet if kids were forced to watch NRA or Christian propaganda in schools, you’d shut it down quickly, citing “the negative effects of such viewing on children”. We know how you operate, sex and violence don’t affect people’s behavior, but right wing views do.

        • mike_in_kosovo

Still pushing that “watching violence doesn’t make people more violent” stuff?

Yes, I am, because it’s complete BULLSHIT – just like a claim that hunting does the same thing, teaching someone to kill without remorse.

We know how you operate, sex and violence don’t affect people’s behavior, but right wing views do.

You *may* want to take a look at my posting history before you make any *larger* a fool of yourself.

      • Justine Noelle Stevens

Right. There are millions of people who play violent video games who don’t shoot people. People need to stop blaming inanimate objects such as movies and video games for violence. It is mental illness that needs to be focused on. They ignore the “obsession with violent video games” angle because it is a red herring. It is a holier than thou position and nothing more.

  • Gradivus

I might be in favor of “common sense gun laws” forbidding gun ownership by those adjudicated insane or mentally incompetent, violent felons, drug addicts, minors, and Hollywood producers, directors, actors, and their immediate families.

    • Snap N McGarrett

Yeah. “Common Sense Gun Laws” What could go wrong?

Government: You want a gun? Wow, that just nuts. You must crazy. No gun for you.

How about enforcing the 20 thousand gun laws we already have instead of letting violent criminals plead out of them only to repeat their violence? Does that make sense?

How about treating mental illness seriously instead of ignoring near-concrete evidence that a patient is a danger to self or others? People who declare themselves as having suicidal or homicidal ideations can’t be be committed for treatment by law. Just sign a discharge against medical advice statement and walk. Does that make sense?

Those who say publicly that they want “Common sense gun laws are actually committed to confiscation. The internal and external communications of any anti-gun organization prove that out.

This shows how facts are totally screwed and rumors and false info get passed around. He did not kill 6 sorority girls. He killed 5 young men including himself and 2 girls. He stabbed 3 of the men to death and then shot the other one in a store. He did shoot the 2 young women. I daresay there were many issues going on with him. Not just the fact he couldn’t get laid. And no, he wasn’t white. He was Eurasian. Google Va. Tech.

This shows how we’ve got to address the rampant “Sex with Blondes” inequality in this country. A small group (1%) of Big Men on Campus are hoarding all the blondes and having wild sex with them, and losers like Elliott can’t buy a thrill. We’ve got to get blonde women to spread their sexual favors to the other 99% of men, and stop this injustice in America immediately. Let’s propose a bill whereby blonde liberal women must have sex with a loser at least once a week or will have their tax refund confiscated by the IRS. Makes as much sense as anything else these morons do.

And this goes to show why a rational society wouldn’t leave its boys’ sexual debuts to the haphazard when it becomes clear that they can’t figure out how to negotiate and close the deals with girls at developmentally appropriate ages on their own. Start to worry if that doesn’t happen by age 20, say. They need some kind of intervention where they receive coaching in dating skills and even work with sexual surrogates, if necessary.

And no, prostitutes don’t really solve the problem. Prostitutes don’t teach young men the adult skill set they need to have competent relationships with women. I also find progressives’ comfort with prostitution puzzling because I thought they abhorred the cash nexus as the main source of alienation in human relationships.

      • Roland Melnick

Liberal gospel? That’s an odd pairing of words. Think of it more as the “prevailing Liberal mindset.”

        • Scott Jackson

          You know what I meant.

      • mike_in_kosovo

I also think our country has a gun violence problem.

Why do you think the tool used in a violent act is more important than the ‘tool’ that used it?

You’d think that being disarmed, the UK would be a pastoral paradise, when in fact it’s violent crime rate is almost 7 times that of the US – 2635/100k for the UK vs. 386/100k for the US (2011).

Mikey Moore’s beloved Canada is 644/100k.

        • Scott Jackson

Do you have sources or a link I could see? Would appreciate it so I could actually respond.

As a counterpoint, the United States has a significantly higher intentional homicide rate than the UK, and most homicides here are committed with firearms.

          • mike_in_kosovo

Direct links, no – number were pulled from FBI crime stats and UK home office.

most homicides here are committed with firearms.

And again – why do you think the tool used in a violent act is more important than than the ‘tool’ that used it?

          • Scott Jackson

As far as I know, it’s not possible to make comparisons in that manner due to the nature of different standards of reporting and definition. It’s why I asked for a link: the wikipedia study cites a UNDOC global study which hopefully has addressed some of the issues that arise when trying to make comparisons in this manner, though I haven’t spent much time looking into it.

            Regarding the tool:

The tool used in a violent act is not more important than the person that used it. But I never said that either, only that I felt we have a gun violence problem. If it could be proved that a ban on guns could lower the homicide rate, then I think it might be a worthwhile discussion. It’s up to society to decide what level of risk is acceptable for any given action, right? If it could be shown that a ban on guns would quarter our homicide rate in the next 50 years, is it an acceptable trade off? Loss of liberty for gain in life?

Too bad we cant know for sure -_-.

          • FreedomRecon

Violence in general is the problem, not the tool used to commit violence.

Gun bans for the U.S. should not be up for debate. History shows when you disarm the populace, the government starts taking more and more of your rights, up to and including genocide. I don’t advocate for 0 regulations on guns, but we have over 200 federal laws regarding this already. Enforce those laws vigorously. True and severe consequences for breaking these laws will be a bit of a deterrent. Example: If you murder someone and get what, maybe 7-20 years, but you committed the crime with a gun, especially one obtained illegally, tack on an additional 25 years to the end of the sentence with no early release.

          • mike_in_kosovo

As far as I know, it’s not possible to make comparisons in that manner due to the nature of different standards of reporting and definition.

Oh, it is – you just have to dig deeper than what the Home Office reports, since they don’t count it as a crime unless there’s a conviction in some crimes.

The tool used in a violent act is not more important than the person that used it.

Then why do you keep qualifying it exactly *by* mentioning the tool used?

But I never said that either, only that I felt we have a gun violence problem.

Directly contradicted yourself in one sentence.

If it could be proved that a ban on guns could lower the homicide rate, then I think it might be a worthwhile discussion.

Chicago. DC. How’d those bans they had for *decades* do for their homicide rates?

          • Scott Jackson

I didn’t contradict myself. You’re trying to make an argument for me that I’m not making: just because I’m saying we have a gun violence problem doesn’t mean that the tool is more important than the criminal, just pointing out rather that the majority of homicides are committed with guns (aka, the most efficient tool). That seems like a problem to me.

And find a source for your statistic, it’s just heresy without it. Also doesn’t change the fact that the US has 4 times the homicide rate of the UK (though of course the reasons are more complicated than just gun laws – I’m not trying to argue that regardless).

Perhaps the bans on guns in Chicago and DC were ineffective in of themselves. Maybe the legislation didn’t work or was too narrow in scope geographically or in another fashion. It’s a good topic to research, but I’m willing to be the answer is a whole lot more complicated than a simple “it didn’t work in chicago and dc”. I’ll follow up.

          • mike_in_kosovo

just because I’m saying we have a gun violence problem doesn’t mean that the tool is more important than the criminal,

When you say that “gun violence is the problem” rather than “violence is the problem”, that’s *exactly* what you’re doing. You’re scapegoating the presence of the tool rather than the actions of the depraved fuck that committed the crime, because something. must. be. done.

Guess what, skippy? You’re never, ever going to legislate away violence and you’re never, ever going to keep criminals from getting weapons.

And find a source for your statistic, it’s just heresy without it.

I’ve told you where they came from – if you’re that interested, you’ll dig up the information yourself.

Also doesn’t change the fact that the US has 4 times the homicide rate of the UK

And Greenland has a suicide rate almost 7 times higher than the US. Different cultures are (gasp) different.

Perhaps the bans on guns in Chicago and DC were ineffective in of themselves. Maybe the legislation didn’t work or was too narrow in scope geographically or in another fashion.

So you don’t know HOW the bans worked, you’re just convinced they will, hmm? Yeah, that seems inline with the rest of your ‘reasoning’ so far in the conversation.

It’s a good topic to research, but I’m willing to be the answer is a whole lot more complicated than a simple “it didn’t work in chicago and dc”.

I’m sure it’s just like the excuses about ‘communism hasn’t worked *YET* because the right people haven’t been in charge’.

          • Scott Jackson

Jeeze man, you keep creating strawmans for me and talking right past what I’m saying.

You’re right – violence is the problem. Possibly exacerbated by guns. That’s what I’m saying when I say gun violence. Violence committed with the help of guns. Specifically, murders that involve a firearm. Why is it a problem to say that?

Since the majority of homicides involve a firearm, I called it a gun violence problem. If knives were the prevalent tool of choice, I’d say we have a knife violence problem.

Forgive me for refining the category from violence to gun violence (again, specifically referring to homicides).

Since you wont link a source, I’ll post mine about why comparing violent crime statistics between different countries is a problem:

You’re right, different cultures are different. So what is it about ours that puts the US so high up on the homicide charts? And is there a way to fix it with trade offs that we are willing to accept?

I’m not familiar with the specific legislation in DC and Chicago, only that they existed and were questionable in their efficacy. I postulated possible reasons for their failure and at no time said I was convinced they would work. In fact, the only time I’ve ever said anything about a ban was when asking
“If it could be shown that a ban on guns would quarter our homicide rate in the next 50 years, is it an acceptable trade off?”

I personally don’t think that the Chicago and DC legislative attempts at gun control settled the question of whether gun control is a worthwhile endeavor, which is why I’m interested in the research that has hopefully been done regarding those two attempts.

Of course, I guess that makes me a communist. (Is that like the conservative version of Godwins law?)

          • mike_in_kosovo

You’re right – violence is the problem.

            I know I am.

Possibly exacerbated by guns. That’s what I’m saying when I say gun violence. Violence committed with the help of guns. Specifically, murders that involve a firearm.

            There you go again.

Why do you have a problem with that, slick?

With scapegoating the gun so you can feel that you’ve *DONE* something, instead of going after the CRIMINAL that committed the crime?

Gee, I can’t see why *anyone* would have an issue over that… /sarc.

Since you wont link a source, I’ll post mine about why comparing violent crime statistics between different countries is a problem:

Gotta love how Politifact (and *there’s* a laugh) says the UK doesn’t know how they report their own crimes…and yet, you *still* point to the UK crime stats as a point of evidence that we’re somehow doing it wrong. Cognitive dissonance, much?

            From UK statistics office (2011-2012):
All violent crimes, minus simple assault and violence without injury (includes robbery): 2.229 million

            Rapes: 3612
            Murders: 540
            Total violent crime: 2,233,152
            UK/Wales population: 56,567,800
            Violent crime rate: 3947.7/100k

            US FBI NCR stats (2012):

Of course, I guess that makes me a communist. (Is that like the conservative version of Godwins law?)

Didn’t say you were a Communist, just drawing the parallel between idiots that have no clue what communism really is and idiots that have no clue what gun control laws actually *do* as an effect, but both thinking that they’ll work if we can just get the right people implementing them.

          • Scott Jackson

I’m not scapegoating anything. I’m stating a fact that the United States has a problem with Homicides committed with guns. How is that going over your head? You’re so entrenched in your defense of guns, which I’m FOR, that you don’t even want to acknowledge the fact that gun violence exists. Yes, its a subset of violence, which is also a problem. I’m not saying guns are bad, I’m not saying that I think they should be banned, but I am saying that IF guns are part of the problem for our high homicide rate relative to the rest of the developed world, than it’s worth having a discussion on how to lower it. Even Justice Scalia, constitutional rights upholder extraordinaire, says “gun violence is a serious problem”.

I linked the politifact article because you kept comparing violent crime between the UK and the US, which I stated is difficult to do without knowing WHAT they report as violent crime. The politifact article and its cited source pretty clearly state why it’s difficult to do, and why your violent crime rate that you keep repeating is not really applicable, with the acknowledgement that the UK does indeed appear to have more violent crime than the United States. So why don’t you link your source? I can’t even find it on google: the numbers I get for 2011-2012 are so different from yours that it makes me question where your information is from.

            Here is the UK link:

So where are you pulling these numbers from? Because the ones in that report don’t match the ones you listed.

I know exactly what the common perception is regarding gun control laws and their efficacy is, and that the gun control laws enacted in DC and Chicago didn’t reduce crimes committed with firearms. What I’m saying is that the reasons behind their failure are more complicated than “LOOK, SEE GUN CONTROL NEVER WORKS” and that it’s worthwhile to try and find out what those reasons are.

There was a Harvard Study that showed that European countries with the highest gun ownership rates had the lowest gun violence rate, but as Justice Breyer said:

“Which is the cause and which the effect? The proposition that strict gun laws cause crime is harder to accept than the proposition that strict gun laws in part grow out of the fact that a nation already has a higher crime rate.”

I think his line of reasoning is applicable to the results in DC and Chicago: were there other reasons those laws failed at reducing the gun violence rate? I personally have to agree with many of the Justices that the body of evidence doesn’t seem to indicate strongly in either direction at the moment, which is why I keep saying it’s still worth investigating.

And don’t call me an idiot.

          • mike_in_kosovo

I’m stating a fact that the United States has a problem with Homicides committed with guns.

No, you’re stating an OPINION…and, yet again, blaming the presence of the tool for the action of the tool user.

How is that going over your head? You’re so entrenched in your defense of guns, which I’m FOR, that you don’t even want to acknowledge the fact that gun violence exists.

It’s not ‘going over my head’ – I’m refuting it because it’s a bullshit excuse. You know in your heart that you can’t do anything to prevent crimes from happening, so you focus on the weapon used so you can *LOOK* like you’re ‘doing something’.

If you want me to acknowledge that ‘gun violence’ is a ‘thing’, then you’re going to have to prove that violent acts don’t happen without the presence of the gun.

which I stated is difficult to do without knowing WHAT they report as violent crime.

*I* already knew that, and mentioned the different reporting upthread. Politifact’s cherry-picked stats were ludicrous.

The politifact article and its cited source pretty clearly state why it’s difficult to do, and why your violent crime rate that you keep repeating is not really applicable,

Funny how it’s not applicable… until the numbers serve *your* point.

Except that it actually *is* pretty comparable, when you know what you’re looking at so as to cull out ‘repeats’. Sorry that it’s evidently beyond your (and politifact’s) capabilities.

So why don’t you link your source? I can’t even find it on google

Sorry your search skills suck so bad.

So where are you pulling these numbers from? Because the ones in that report don’t match the ones you listed.

            From the actual data tables.

And don’t call me an idiot.

            Quit being one.

          • Scott Jackson

My mistake, it is an opinion, based on the FACT that the United States has a significantly higher gun violence rate than many other countries. No shit you can’t prevent all crime from happening, and even with a gun ban no one would honestly expect that. But then again, I never said that either, but you just keep creating strawmen and reading your own little version of what I’m typing. Furthermore, there are things that societies can do to limit violence, and it doesn’t take much to find other cultures that are more peaceful and perhaps see if we are interested in trying to find out why.

Did you even look at the UK source that I posted from supposedly the year that you yourself cited? Where is the discrepancy from? Or are you just not willing to show work / post sources because you’re pulling things out of thin air? I’m actually genuinely interested – I don’t have a dogmatic stake in the argument, unlike you apparently. If you want to post numbers, go for it, but expect to be called out on when they aren’t lining up with what find or is reported from the source that you said you got them from. I also specifically said that violent crime rates are whats hard to compare, because of the different definitions of violent crime. The only numbers I ever posted were for homicides, which is pretty black and white.

Also, way to be an asshole, buddy.

Why is this statement so convoluted? Ugh… crazy part in the link is 73% of males murders are by gun.

          • CO2 Producer

In both 1992 and 2011, firearms were reportedly used in 73% of all murders of males and in 49% of all murders of females, with minor fluctuations during the period.

            Sounds clear to me.

          • Scott Jackson

Not that – the part regarding a reduction in homicides involving a firearm while maintaining the percentage killed by firearm.

I rather detest that, in the wake of all similar tragedies, both sides seems intent on proving that the perpetrator subscribed to the other side’s ideology. You can easily find, on the web, people arguing that there is “proof” that all mass shooters are Republicans, and others argue that there is “proof” that all mass shooters are Democrats. Hooey- these guys are almost never motivated by mainstream ideology espoused by any political party. This guy was a malignant narcissist, so focused on his own perceived life problems that he lacked basic human empathy for others. “Politics” would have required he care about society in a way clearly beyond his ken.

    • JSizzle

Thank you for your post. I agree with you that this is a horrible tragedy. I think first and foremost we should be united in offering our condolences to those who lost loved ones. When I watched the videos yesterday I thought that this guy sounded very much narcissistic. However; I do think that he is a walking billboard for our liberal society. He only cared about his wants, lacked empathy (as you pointed out), and was so focused on sex. Would he have even known how to win over a woman? Hold her hand? Make her laugh? From what we know about this guy; I highly doubt that and I shudder to think how he might have treated any girlfriend.

I would personally never use a tragedy to score political points, but there are deep seeded issues behind this tragedy that are worthy of a deeper discussion. We need to teach people self-respect and to be content within themselves. This go with your impulse because it’s all good society is creating many causalities.

Organizations like the ACLU began tying the hands of authorities long ago in efforts to deal with people who have serious mental problems. It has become almost impossible to hold someone in a mental facility until they have committed a crime. Parents and families of people who display these various disorders are almost helpless and live in fear of their own children or family members.

    • Scott Jackson

      Care to elaborate?

      • mike_in_kosovo

Start with O’Connor v. Donaldson and the Lanter-Petris-Short Act – both pushed by the ACLU.

        • Scott Jackson

I mean, just as a cursory glance on the wiki pages regarding the lawsuit and act, it’s not a bad thing, right? The mentally ill should have protections against being permanently incarcerated with no need. Also, isn’t it mostly just armchair speculation that the shooter had “serious mental problems”?

          • mike_in_kosovo

It wasn’t totally a bad thing, no – but it led to the mass release of mentally ill individuals that were unable to care for themselves and the mass closure of those facilities that *could* have helped them. Unintended consequences are unintended.

Also, isn’t it mostly just armchair speculation that the shooter had “serious mental problems”?

I would say that shooting an innocent person in cold blood is pretty much prima facie evidence of a serious mental problem – you evidently have a differing opinion on that.

          • Scott Jackson

I think it’s about the technical terms of what a mental problem is. Was he insane or did he just have a shitty world view? Did people who lynch others have mental issues or were they just racists?

I don’t know the shooter’s medical history and I’m definitely not a psychologist / psychiatrist so I can’t really say if he was insane or not, but I agree a bit with another comment that just writing off these types of shootings as the work of a crazy person ignores part of the problem. There are some world views that are wrong but holding them doesn’t necessarily make you crazy – at least not in the psychological sense.

How the hell did that kid get to that point? Really sad. Really sick. Crazy bastard.

BMW too, they manufactured a car which was not designed well enough to attract blond college girls for sex with the driver.

  • Arnold Townsend

Boy, did this open the dim wattage spew from “feminists” and their kin.

Hey, lefties, Elliot Rodger killed his three male roommates WITH a knife. Do you happen to know how utterly mentally off-the-tracks one has to be to do that? HE STABBED THEM TO DEATH, you idiots. Then he went on his shooting spree.

You can dress this up in your usual way to satisfy your own bigotry and falsehoods but Elliot Rodger was insane. Evil but insane.

  • Linda

It’s a little early to call these things “myths.” In the quest to always be the first to report or comment, the real facts aren’t known at first and speculation takes on the illusion of being a fact. That’s what appears to have gone on since the breaking of this news. But to call them “myths” is attempting to do what, I’m not sure.

    • CO2 Producer

It doesn’t matter what the real facts are. The media and the pundits will deem certain things as facts, and it becomes history by way of simple repetition/word of mouth. Twitchy provided examples by the media and by those who are talking about the story and are making assumptions. Twitchy then pointed to things that debunked these assumptions. Should Twitchy or anyone else keep their mouths shut instead of trying to put these false assumptions to rest?

      • Linda

Tell me what I said in my post that says “…keep their mouths shut instead of trying to put these false assumptions to rest?”

        • CO2 Producer

I didn’t say you said that. I asked you the question.

          • Linda

Nice save, but I’m not buying it. Twitchy or any other social media outlet should always provide the facts, and correct misinformation, when it becomes available. Now, how does your question or my response address my earlier comment that it is too early to call the false statements “myths?”

          • CO2 Producer

“Myth”: a widely held but false belief or idea

Not buying what? What was I selling?

          • Linda

For false belief or idea to be widely held as in a myth, it takes a period of time for the myth to develop. That’s why I said it is too early to be calling the misinformation a myth.

I wasn’t buying that you truly meant you were just asking a question instead of implying that my post implied that I thought they should be quiet.

          • CO2 Producer

Myths become popular “fact” pretty quick these days, and it’s difficult to correct them among those who use the mainstream media as resources when those resources don’t have enough humility to publicize the real facts when they find they were initially wrong.

Your post(s) came off sounding as though you were being dismissive of sources like Twitchy who were trying to debunk the myths. That’s right, I said it.

          • Linda

I stand by my original comment that “myth” was not an appropriate word in the heading of this thread. If you took that to be dismissive of Twitchy rather than the word choice, well, I can’t help that.

          • CO2 Producer

I think you’re nitpicking, but that’s just my opinion.

Our kids are taught they can have everything: trophies, wealth, fame, notoriety, sex – you name it – no effort, no process of failure and recovery, nothing on their part. they will seek fame any way they can get it. This guy and his sad movie villain audition tapes say it all. Liberals have to stop thinking they and their protected classes are entitled to anything and everything their whims desire – it has ruined our country. Just look at the despicable human being we put in the top office – there needs to be an awakening.

I think what he did says more about his entire generation than it does about libs or conservatives. His generation is completely nuts, as evidenced by their desire to jump into any argument -even when completely unarmed with facts – in the hopes of looking like the most intelligent one in the room. They are narcissistic, greedy, hateful, jealous, lazy, and simple-minded as a whole. Facts mean nothing to any of them. They take anyone’s word for anything as long as there is a (D) after their name — I guess that means I should add gullible to my list as well. Moral bankruptcy comes to mind too. This is what you get after years of training kids to think they warrant rewards for merely being alive.

Yea, I do! But hopefully I wont say “his generation is completely nuts”.

  • Peter Toth

Once again the low information crowd on the left react with only half the facts, and all the rhetoric.

If someone’s grandfather was black, they call themselves black. This guys was half Chinese and yet for purposes of vilification, he is now White. Interesting!

Two of the 6 he murdered were women, yet once again for purposes of vilification, and posturing, they are all now called women? Disgusting!

Three of his victims were stabbed to death. Yet again for purposes of furthering an agenda that vilifies all firearms owners and tries to drag the NRA and Second Amendment rights advocates into this, all his victims were shot. Criminally deceptive!

The only problem these far left activists face, is a free internet and press, who expose these lies and criminal deceptions.

    • Scott Jackson

Random dumb people are calling him white because they thought he looked white. How does this have anything to do with the “low information crowd on the left”? Because some random twitter accounts said he was a white guy?

      • Peter Toth

Because it is the crowd on the left that are saying it! Sheesh! Does everything have to be spelled out for you Democrats?

Face it, this is the group you run with, and if you don’t like it, maybe you should reconsider who you support.

It’s not “Random dumb people”, it is dumb left wing democrats.

Sorry to open your eyes to the reality of your chosen allegiance.

        • Scott Jackson

I don’t appreciate the backhanded comment. My point is, you can find a whole bunch of inane comments on twitter, liberal and conservative, and I don’t think it’s indicative of the nuances of a party’s platform or ideology.

I’m a member of the crowd on the left, and here I am saying the complete opposite of what you ascribe to me. What’s the point of posting screenshots of stuff like this? Just to make a conservative circle jerk where actual dialogue and conversation is pushed aside? To set up some liberal boogeyman who has the intellect of a child and wants to take away all your guns?

          • Peter Toth

If these screen shots weren’t posted, then you would be crying “where’s your proof that people are saying this”, then you would go on to say it is all a lie.

            Sound familiar?!

          • Scott Jackson

It doesn’t sound familiar at all. It doesn’t make sense at all. Should I post photos of westboro baptist church protests and give it a title “proof that conservatives are homophobic”? Do I make a screen cap blog about people defending a senator and his stupid rape comments and say “myths the right has about rape”?

These people are misinformed and have jumped to conclusions: hardly a trait unique to the left.

          • Bklynnygirl

Westboro baptist church is a bunch of demented Democrats.

Phelps ran for governor of Kansas as a Democrat in 1990, 1994, and 1998. Phelps received 31% of the vote in Kansas’s 1992 Democratic Party primary for U.S. Senate. In 1993 and 1997, Phelps ran for mayor of Topeka. He supported Al Gore in the 1988 primaries. Phelps has been an extremely vocal critic of President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney, calling Bush “A Bible pervert.” Of the Cheney family Phelps said, “They know the iniquity they’ve wrought, but they’re not at all ashamed of it…God hates the Cheney’s

Phelps was once an active contributor to the Democratic Party and was an enthusiastic supporter of Al Gore for president in 1988
Phelps’s son, Fred Phelps, Jr., served as a delegate for Gore.

Phelps openly denounced the Catholic Church and Episcopal Church.

          • Peter Toth

Oh come now, you just burst his bubble by introducing facts. Shame on you!

          • Scott Jackson

Actually did not know that he was ran four times as a democrat (and lost, thankfully). The point stands though, some of those twitter comments could be by republicans – it’s silly to try and create some propaganda value from it the same way it would be silly to post the quotes from the westboro members.

          • FreedomRecon

Him being a Republican was pushed by the media and many left wing pundits, thus causing random people on social media to run with it. And when the facts were presented many many times, they never corrected themselves.

          • Peter Toth

Not unique to the left, but it is one trait that you on the left certainly excel in.

I’m also not surprised that “it doesn’t sound familiar at all” to you. But to everyone else who is not mired in a socialist mindset, it is very clear and quite familiar.

As for the westboro group, everyone recognizes them as a group of whack jobs, and they are anything but Republicans. These people who are posting on this matter however, represent the mainstream of the Democrats.

          • Scott Jackson

I didn’t realize that “Lil Mama Kailey” represented the mainstream of Democratic ideology.

Actually, if you read his manifesto, he clearly says that he planned to kill his roommates because part of the original plan was to kill people in his home…and he needed them to be gone.

I don’t know why that didn’t happen as he planned, but that was his reasons for killing them.

I have to wonder why progressive commentators on this story keep saying Elliot should have visited prostitutes. I thought progressives held the belief that the cash nexus causes alienation in capitalist society. In their utopian alternative, healthy, organic human relationships, freed from the intervention of market transactions, would become the norm.

Yet when it comes to their advice to male virgins, well, you only deserve alienated capitalist sex with prostitutes, buddy! No healthy, voluntary sexual relationships with women for you!

  • jerseydevil

This rich Liberals covered up their son’s mental illness that would have kept him from getting LEGAL guns…YET they send the police by for a “wellbeing check”…why do that if they didn’t suspect he was going to do something so stupid…and yet they told no one anything! Oh, make no mistake…he would have gotten guns somehow…but HEY now they call for “stronger gun laws”… We need better mental health care! BTW…we should also restrict Knives and BMWs…he used those too!

  • jerry148

Honestly, few things disgust me more than people getting on their high horse parroting talking points that they haven’t fact-checked. The reason we can’t have discourse about important issues in this country is because people buy these “facts” without making sure they’re actually true.

Or they peddle these “facts” to steer the conversation, promote confusion, and take advantage of the fact that most people are idiots and eat whatever lines they see first. Actually, the people taking advantage of other people’s ignorance are the real scumbags.

  • chief

RE: A guy shot 6 girls at uc Santa Barbara bc he was a virgin? Omg wot

I really wish that the above comment had been called out as
    a myth because it is.

This “man” (using the term loosely) was a virgin, but being a virgin
did not cause him to commit the terrible acts he committed. It is important to distinguish between this guy’s behavior and the behavior of normal people; including other virgins. This guy was liberalism personified; wanting instant gratification, thinking he was entitled to sex, and having everything handed to him on a silver platter. He was an evil person and if anything is to blame for this tragedy it is certainly the leftist agenda. I can’t imagine how he would have treated a girlfriend if he had managed to get one.

As it is; the left says go ahead and have sex before marriage because we have you covered with free birth control and abortion. At the same time; they perpetuate a stigma with regards to the term “virgin” as if it is a dirty word because it suits their agenda to attack “anti-feminist” conservatives. However; there is nothing wrong with someone making the choice to remain a virgin until they are married. It is a legitimate lifestyle choice and it should be respected. Maybe if this guy had had the fortitude to make such a choice he wouldn’t have killed the innocent people he did.

More effort needs to be made to address stereotypes of virgins. Yes; it is easy to make fun of someone who is a virgin because of the misbelief they are all “awkward” or in some way stunted and repressed. However; that is not necessarily true. I’ve heard so many dumb statements; some of my favorites: “in this day and age; its just too unrealistic to be a virgin”, “you’re too pretty to be a virgin so you’ll have to prove it”, “you have to test drive the car before buying it”…and I could go on. These are all so insulting because they belittle the development of healthy relationships that are life-affirming in favor of superficial relationships. And society is reinforcing this to both men and women!

There seems to be a movement on the right of wanting to bring in young voters by loosening the straps on social issues, but all this is doing is turning conservatives into democrats. We will then have one party masquerading as two with each party trying to pander pet issues to voters to win votes. In this regard; conservatives need to get it together and quit pimping out for votes!

  • chief

Sexism kills women? How many times have sexism saved women’s lives? Men will take a bullet for a woman. Men will sacrifice their own life for a woman. Their are million of heroic stories about this! Because of sexism! Men will always think of women as needing protection (weaker gender). What about that kid in the news today that take a stabbing for his friend. I would put my life on the line to save my wife and daughter would not expect them to do the same. Would a liberal male do that?

Not at all surprised that he was a Fan of The Young Turks. (check out the TYT vids) That show spends have their time excusing terrorism and the other half the time indulging in grotesque misogyny (constant vids about porn and strippers) but never get called out on it because they are in the camp of the left. So yeah- put the “terrorist justifications” together with the “anti-women stuff” and you end up with this shooting/stabbing.

However- there is a serious issue this whole tragedy does raise: This guy is EVIL (don’t get me wrong) But their is a seething anger in the ABC (american born Chinese) male community (that makes the Palestinians look like a bunch of Grateful dead fans) regarding guys who cant get a date in this country because all the ABC women ONLY want to date white guys like me and refuse to date ABC men. I think we have to have a national discussion about this so we don’t have a repeat of this horrible tragedy.

Eliot Rodgers made the CHOICE to kill. Nobody else is to blame. Nobody tricked him, coerced him, influenced him.
He knew he was a failure at life and instead of taking the hard road (improving himself) he chose to lash out at those he blamed.
This speaks nothing about guns. It speaks to the malignant selfish narcissism that is surging in America. Individual responsibility and nurtured moral codes produce less nihilists like Rodgers.

It always fascinates me how people get drawn into the drama. Stick with the facts. This psycho killed 6 people….intentionally. Outside of that nothing matters. For those of you who want to spout the racial crap, it doesn’t matter WHAT race he was, what sexual orientation, who he politically supported, etc. All that stupidity just keeps us segregated as a society and doesn’t change the FACTS. He KILLED people INTENTIONALLY. Period. Stop feeding into the media and political banter – it’s what they want – to keep up in uprise against each other as American citizens. Start acting like one. Conjoined we are strong, divided we are weak. Get it????!!!!!!

Elizabeth Plank says…Can we talk about the fact that Elliot Rodger was white, like the majority of school shooters?

Elizabeth, can we talk about the fact that for every person killed by a white person in a crime like this, which happens every few years…in everyday violent crime across America, Blacks kill 100 times this number… again “Everyday”.

Lets see how ‘right wing’ this thug was. He was the son of a Hunger Games assistant director (that was like a totally right wing propaganda movie wasn’t it?).

On his Youtube channel favorites, one was of The Young Turks. Totally right wing dudes who failed on MSNBC years ago.

Rodgers said he wanted a ‘war on women.’ Who coined that phrase and has used it repeatedly since the 2012 election?

    yea, totally right-wing dude! :eyeroll:

    • Sergeant343

Hunger Games was about freedom and a mockery of reality tv shows, the only thing that makes it slightly left wing is its statement against the draft. Unless you are saying that freedom from oppression is only something left wingers believe in, I am not understanding the point.

TYT has been around before Cenk went to MSNBC and he left because he hated MSNBC. Plus they are a large alternative news media site on Youtube. Just because someone is subscribed to them does not mean they agree with the all or most of the time. Hell I am not a liberal and I tune in just to hear what the MSM is not reporting on.

referential fallacy with a little bit of Equivocation.

I am not saying he is a conservative, just that it this not good evidence. Plus there are also comments by him you don’t normally hear Left-wingers make such as, calling blacks subhumans and getting upset at minorities for dating blonde white hair girls. Or bragging that he comes from British aristocracy. If anything I would put him down in the middle, but no one can see for sure until they see his voter registration card.

      • JohnL1313

The Hunger Games is about dystopian society where the value of life is relegated to a violent form of utilitarianism – or even Darwin’s survival of the fittest – and where the only chance at “freedom” is through killing others. There is no government of the people, it is centrally controlled society where people’s lives are pre-determined for them.

Don’t normally hear left wingers call blacks subhumans? Adolph Hitler or Margaret Sanger ring a bell? Since when do conservatives call blacks subhumans? Second, it is the Left that thinks so lowly of blacks that they force quotas because in their mind, blacks are too dumb to compete and need to have government assistance rather than believing blacks are equal.

Third, and maybe most importantly, take a look at Progressive history and eugenics. It is all Leftist thinking and a cornerstone is the belief that minority races, such as blacks, are inferior and that in order to reach social utopia, they need to be weeded out. Hence, Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood. This is all rooted in the false scientific notion that human beings are simply another form of evolutionary life and not a creation of God where all life is sacred.

        • Sergeant343

And the film is against that society, so I don’t get the point still.

How is Hitler a liberal, his policies are nationalistic in nature, which is an extreme conservative view point. Also White Nationalists, albeit they are an extreme branch of conservatism, they are still a branch. Yes the KKK was a branch democratic party, but that was back when they were social conservatives and supported states rights. Conservatives are just as moronic as liberals.

Now you belief in a big government is shown by your low views on humanity and wanting to ban abortion. While humans are animals, we are the only rational animals on the face of the Earth and only we have rights. A dog has none; a cat has none; a cute little hamster has none. There is no God, only Man.

Note: I am Ayn Rand Objectivist

          • Corey Dennison

How is Hitler a liberal, his policies are nationalistic in nature, which is an extreme conservative view point.

Wrong. “Nationalism’ isn’t solely ‘right-wing.’ The Nazis were socialists. Try again.

Also White Nationalists, albeit they are an extreme branch of conservatism, they are still a branch.

            Again…nationalism isn’t solely a right-wing ideal.

Yes the KKK was a branch democratic party, but that was back when they were social conservatives and supported states rights.

What does any of this inaccurate non-sequitur have to do with the thread?

Conservatives are just as moronic as liberals.

That may be true, on a case-by case basis. But not as moronic what you just posted.

          • Sergeant343

Have you read what socialism is, or do you repeat the bloggers? If he was socialist then him and Stalin would have been friends, but their ideologies were the complete opposite and the polices Hitler implemented were not workers rights. Plus he arrested Socialists and Communists and favored corporatism which is an extreme right winged belief, much like how extreme left wingers support union thugs.

Yes it is not entirely conservative, but as you said it effects both sides, and that is a problem. Do Christian Theocrats work for you? You know social conservatives who want a society run entirely off of a myth, which in term limits individual freedom. If that does not, then how about Islamic theocracies, which pretty much follow the dictionary definition of conservationism (at least the social sphere)

Just a prediction of what you would say ,”But the liberals created the KKK.” Also I noticed you ignored the “White” I said before nationalism, because that is kind of important. Otherwise that would make Black Nationalists conservative too (which they are not). Nationalism in the way I used it in my 2nd paragraph, was the in the more flag waving patriotic way (patriotism is also retarded for the record), and that is mainly used by the politically conservative.

Conservatism, Liberalism, and let’s throw in Libertarianism, Authoritarianism, and Moderatism are objectively moronic beliefs. It was late when I wrote my previous comment, so I think I said something I did not mean to say.

          • JohnL1313

I didn’t say Hitler was a liberal, at least in the classical sense, I said he was Left Wing. 20th century “liberalism” was simply the re-branding of the term Progressive which by the mid-1930’s had worn out it’s welcome in the US.

Hitler, like Lenin, Stalin, Mao or Mussolini, believed in an authoritarian government where the leaders would pursue a form of social utopia designed and dictated by the leaders and not the people. We could fit Woodrow Wilson into the category as well as his administration struck the first blow to the constitution by shifting power from the people and the states to the federal government.

Nothing in this reflects a conservative point of view, which is merely to adhere to the principles of the founding of the US, principally of God given rights to the individual.

Hitler, like his contemporaries, was an avowed socialist. The Nazi Party actually means “National Socialist Party”. The fact that Hitler believed in Nationalism while Communists believed in a world wide movement is inconsequential to this point. Same sickness, different strain of the virus.

Hitler’s eugenics policies were a mirror image of Margaret Sanger’s (founder of Planned Parenthood) ideals from the 1920’s where she believed that to form the perfect society the “human weeds” (her term for blacks and physical and mental defectives) needed to be eradicated from society. Hence abortion. She is on record as saying her plans were to abolish the black race. This is just an example of how close Progressivism and Nazism really were.

This, eugenics, is rooted in the Darwinist theory that claims human beings are merely another step in the evolutionary chain and as such, our lives are not sacred as breathed into us by God, but merely a cog in the machine, a mechanism that can be manipulated for the greater good. Individuals don’t matter, only the group. This is why Stalin didn’t blink an eye at the tens of millions killed during his collectivist schemes in the 1930’s. The individual didn’t matter, only the group. The greater good. The society. The State.

Not the individual who is uniquely created by God for a purpose. Just the group.

By the way, nothing I’ve said even remotely points me having a belief in a big government nor do they show a “low view” on humanity; they only show a view of what humanity has often done to itself when rejecting the Objective truth of God. When God grants me my right to life and liberty it can’t be taken away. When you do, then you can take from me for whatever personal or political reason you deem fit to further your own aspirations.

          • Sergeant343

I see, for I was using a different definition of Conservatism than you.

I agree Hitler like Stalin were both Collectivists and that is a poison.

Darwinist theory? Why do creationist use that word to describe the theory of Evolution? Besides I have met nutters who believe God created superior races, in fact that is what slave owners in the old south once argued. The theory of evolution makes no claim to “superior traits” like Eugenics does. Evolution requires natural selection while Eugenics is anything but that. Stalin killed people not because he rejected god, but because his was a power hunger son of a bitch did not respect individual rights.

Yes you do, you said all life is sacred, which means you think a dog deserves the amount of respect as a human, to ask the question more directly though, do you support animal right laws (IE being arrested for animal abuse/neglect) if yes then your view on humanity is low, because you are ascribing rights to lesser beings. Also how you made sure the mention Sanger was a founder of planned parenthood and implicated that you don’t have best views on abortion. Thirdly, you are a Christian and therefore believe humans are all sinners and now you have more or less said that you are a creationist, so you believe Man came from dirt. Not under Objectivist morality nor Objectivist rights, they can never be taken away, for they do not come from nature, government, nor god(s).

          • JohnL1313

Unfortunately, I think all “-isms” are probably incorrect in general as they are based upon groups rather than individuals. If I asked ten people about their belief in libertarianism I would probably get 10 various answers. Same as if I asked ten conservatives or liberals.

            A few points to clarify:
1- Charles Darwin posed the theory of evolution and laid it out in “The Origin of Species”, hence, Darwinist theory.

2- Yes, there are “nutters” :-) who believe God created superior races. Yet, nowhere is this in the Bible in either the Old or New Testament so for a “nutter” to make this claim is a mistake.

3- The theory of evolution is absolutely predicated on superior traits through the survival of the fittest. According to evolution theory the best traits whether they be physical strength, speed, leaping ability, long necks, short tails, superior eyesight, etc., survive the competitive process through breeding. Hence, stronger, faster, more intelligent animals are superior to others.

4 – Eugenics relies on the same principle – some people are the product of better breeding, better education, etc., and thus, they should lead society. Those people should be thrust to the top of the political spectrum so they can lead and dictate to society in an effort to achieve social utopia. In contrast, the weaker, the immigrants, the blacks, the feeble minded, the degenerates should be weeded out.

So, rather than “nature” running it’s course, mankind does the dirty work and it is most definitely predicated on the fact that man is merely a mechanism, an evolutionary product of the earth and universe and whose worth is no more or less than that of any other common animal just as evolutionary theory claims.

            A good article:

            Shocking statements from Margaret Sanger:

5- Stalin killed because in his mind the ends justified the means. The end was a Socialist paradise rooted in collectivism. As long as the world ended up in Communism it was okay if tens of millions died on the way there – for the greater good. The lack of respect for the rights of the individual which is rooted in the sacredness of life created by God. Thus, without God, there is no Objective barrier to protect the individual and life.

6- The Bible specifically points out the man is superior to all other animals so when I point out that all life is sacred, I’m referring to man. Sure, in your mind I don’t have the “best” views on abortion. But I ascribe to God’s Law, Natural Law, not man’s law. Each baby is a special creation by God and must be treated as such. Man does not come from dirt, not sure where you arrived at this theory.

7- Oh, and yes, because man is sinful, fallen, it is necessary to tether our basic rights to perfect God and not to other men who are sinful and fallen.

          • Sergeant343

            3. No John, the best traits for the environment survive, sometimes seeing good is not a benefit and it is evolved out, bats are an example of this. There have been many strong species who went extinct because they could not adapt to the changing environment quickly enough.
            4. No it is someone’s opinion on what is best, and they are wrong 100% of the time. Many Objectivists accept the theory of evolution according to natural selection and we also view mankind as a rational animal and therefore have rights that should never be infringed (even if a billion lives could be saved if one was violated) and therefore are more than just another animal.
            5. Have you ever read the Randian theory of rights?
            6. Genesis 2 verse 7 in my bible it says dirt, but I will just quote the NIV and dust is still not that flattering. And you must understand how I got confused when you said “all life”
            7. Read 5

          • JohnL1313

            3. Yes, the best traits survive. That is what I said. You are merely arguing semantics as it is obvious that a monkey wouldn’t benefit from having gills.

            4. Yes, it is someone’s opinion on what is best and that was the danger I pointed out when describing eugenics and Progressive ideology that supports it. They are choosing the winners and losers rather than allowing individuals. There is no Objective truth in this, only moral relativism.

            5. A little bit, certainly no expert. While I believe Rand’s philosophy does fit the ideal of the free market (though a bit sloppily and not exactly reflective of Adam Smith or Hayek) and allowing individuals to dictate their lives is basically correct. It is nothing new, just a rehash of Locke. Or, to back even further to Aristotle’s writings about man and politics and their balance within society.

Without God, all values, all rights are still subjective to the individual will and not objective.

            6. Okay, I see your point. However, man is still created by God. Life is breathed into him by God. Being of the earth created by God is connotative of man’s humility before God while at the same time expressing the sacredness of life as God specifically chooses each of us. We are not merely the top of the food chain. And yes, there is proof of God despite Rand and other atheist’s theory.

Flattering? Being a descendent of apes, or a shellfish or a mollusk is somehow flattering but being individually created by God is not flattering? I don’t get that one. :-)

As a practising mental health professional, you might disagree, but what I see is another on-their-meds youth. The warnings on psychotropic anti-depressants lists “violent ideation” as a side effect, and the companies own studies indicate an incidence of 1 in 1000. With millions taking the drugs, that is thousands of people with drug induced violent thoughts. Now most of those are going to commit suicide rather than kill other people (which will be chalked up to depression rather than the drug), but that still leaves a lot of prescription drug induced killers.

      • AZWarrior

Hi CD. I understand your point about the difficulty with the effects of some psychotropic medications with some individuals, but I read that in this particular case, the young man completely refused to take his prescribed antipsychotic medication. If he were brown-skinned, the media would be doing their damn best to not cover it, or sympathize with him a la Dorner if they did cover it.

God, all the Left EVER does is lie.

  • Schmogie

Facts? we have facts? Nonsense. They don’t matter. Nor does the fact that he was being seen by multiple mental health professionals and was probably on PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS AT THE TIME..

  • MurphTacular

I’d never heard ANY of this until you guys brought it up … So, who’s really spreading misinformation? You can finds lots of myths, lies, etc., on the Web. But … the news reports I’ve heard haven’t mentioned any of these misogyny, right-wing speculations. … Just sayin’ …
And this, which does confirm that Rodger was spiteful of at least some women …

    • Tantalus XVI

Jon Stewart? MSNBC? The dude crying on T.V. blaming the NRA, Youtube. All possible “news reports.”

      • Yeah Buddy

Blaming YouTube.. ” it was the video’s fault.”
Hmmm… is there a pattern evolving here?

    • MightyMayhem

I had the same reaction. Maybe it’s because I didn’t see the first wave of reports or something. This whole post seems like just a really lame excuse to bash the other team. So…go Hawks?

    • tops116 ✓Quipper

It’s amazing how you find a way to blame Twitchy for other people spreading misinformation. It really is.

  • MightyMayhem

This is probably going lead to an onslaught of outrage, but after 24 hours I’ve not really heard much about gun control or his conservative agenda, the three male stabbing victims were indeed reported (though I didn’t see the fourth victim was), and the guy’s grade A misogyny coupled with an inferiority complex seemed like a pretty heavy factor in why he was motivated to kill his peers. Attributing a crime to misogyny does not reflect poorly on men as a whole, only the man in question. Most dudes are solid and the ladies like that.
As he is affluent and appears white, I could see why people would be pissed that this was instantly labeled ‘mental illness’ instead of malice and a form of planned terrorism (as per his own manifestos. ).
It seems like you just took a lot of random clips from the ill-informed social media grapevine and had a knee-jerk reaction to them.

    • JSizzle

I disagree with you that labeling this crime as misogyny doesn’t reflect poorly on men as a whole. When you try to rub every man’s face in the dirt because of what one pathetic little runt did it is cause for concern. This guy and this guy alone is responsible for his actions.

It is time to look deeper than superficial knee-jerk reactions from the left like banning guns and bashing men. Clearly; “white-privilege” doesn’t apply here either. This guy was mentally ill and it significantly contributed to his actions. This doesn’t absolve him of guilt. However; one can’t overlook that he was also a poster child for liberalism; a spoiled entitled selfish brat. He thought he was entitled to everything and women were solely for his use. This is the agenda that dems push when they promote free birth control and abortion ala Fluke.

      • MightyMayhem

Hi Jennifer, thanks for your reply. I use ‘misogynist’ as it is exactly defined: One who distrusts and hates women. This is not a common state in the male world and I don’t men bash, as I’m raising two sons and am married to a pretty awesome man.
I would disagree about the free birth control, as I really don’t think most people have the means or wherewithal to raise children. The last thing we want as a society is children raising children. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure :)
It takes a real piece of work to be a misogynist. In fact, I can only claim to know one man who seriously thinks women should either be performing some household task or performing fellatio. 99% of men are not interested in hurting, intimidating, or subjugating their partners. Decent work and a happy home is pretty much all most people want, when you get down to it.
This guy NOT is one of them. I allow that he is an absolute loon, but if this guy doesn’t fit the definition of ‘misogynist’, I don’t know who does. This is straight from his manifesto (page 135 of the link above):
“The ultimate evil behind sexuality is the human female. They are the main instigators of sex. They control which men get it and which men don’t. Women are flawed creatures, and my mistreatment at their hands has made me realize this sad truth. There is something very twisted and wrong with the way their brains are wired. They think like beasts, and in truth, they are beasts. Women are incapable of having morals or thinking rationally. They are completely controlled by their depraved emotions and vile sexual impulses. Because of this, the men who do get to experience the pleasures of sex and the privilege of breeding are the men who women are sexually attracted to… the stupid, degenerate, obnoxious men. I have observed this all my life. The most beautiful of women choose to mate with the most brutal of men, instead of magnificent gentlemen like myself. (side note: WTF?)
Women should not have the right to choose who to mate and breed with. That decision should be made for them by rational men of intelligence. If women continue to have rights, they will only hinder the advancement of the human race by breeding with degenerate men and creating stupid, degenerate offspring. This will cause humanity to become even more depraved with each generation. Women have more power in human society than they deserve, all because of sex. There is no creature more evil and depraved than the human female.
Women are like a plague. They don’t deserve to have any rights. Their wickedness must be contained in order prevent future generations from falling to degeneracy. Women are vicious, evil, barbaric animals, and they need to be treated as such.”

        • Oysteria

I would venture to guess that he was a misanthropist/narcissist.

        • JSizzle

You’re welcome. Sorry for not checking back here for replies sooner….oops.

I appreciate you going over the definition of a misogynist. However; I am aware of what the term means and I don’t think it is the root issue here. While this guy seemed to focus on women in his manifesto; I attribute this preoccupation to his mental illness. I think mental
illness played a large role in this guy’s outlook and provided motivation for what he did. When I watched the videos of this guy several things stood out to me including his “supreme gentleman” comment, the use of the phrase “you girls”, and his arrogance. Even the manifesto used terms like “breeders” which I have never heard used to
refer to people before. He said that he could be appointed the God-like leader of this new society that he would oversee. He was a fruitcake and that is why he did what he did. This also explains why this guy couldn’t get a girlfriend.

I know wiki isn’t an adequate primary source, but here is just a snip of symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

-Expects to be recognized as superior and special, without superior accomplishments Check!

-Expects constant attention, admiration and positive reinforcement from others Check!

-Envies others and believes others envy him/her Check!

-Is preoccupied with thoughts and fantasies of great success, enormous attractiveness, power, intelligence Check!

-Lacks the ability to empathize with the feelings or desires of others Check!

-Is arrogant in attitudes and behavior Check!

-Has expectations of special treatment that are unrealistic Check!

I agree with you that most men have no interest in harming their partners. However; when you label a guy who is clearly mentally ill as a misogynist instead you are being fundamentally dishonest and trying to manipulate the course of a legitimate discussion. In this instance; I
think it was done to further the feminist agenda.

Obviously; we do disagree about free birth control. It seems like you are advocating for only wealthy couples having children. Who is anyone to tell someone else they can’t have a child? What arbitrary rules make someone a good parent? Also; I don’t view pregnancy as an illness in
need of a “cure”. I think it is a blessing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the debate! :)

Was Elliiot Rodger taking an SSRI to treat his Asperger’s? There is a connectioin between SSRI’s and mass murders. I am a 2nd Amendment supporter but believe it’s too dangerous to mix gun ownership with SSRI’s (aka Prozac)

They ignore the fact that a majority of white boys are singled out for being forced to take anti-psychotic drugs from the time they are very little for engaging in perfectly normal young boy behavior. Left-wing, anti-white racism, combined with Big Pharma, is responsible for these boys turning into psychotics, more than anything else.

But anyone else notice how the drugs are never evaluated? And how the Left REFUSES to go into much detail about the drugs? Apparently, drugs and Big Pharma are never at fault for anything. Is that not suspicious?

    • Guest

For all the conservatives and especially Christians on here claiming we need more “mental health” services:

Rodger should have been locked up by POLICE for making death threats: psychiatry isn’t necessary!

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is conservative Christians who are declared “mentally ill” next by anti-Christian psychiatry, and that it is determined they should have all their guns taken away due to their “supreme mental insanity” by the great “mental health hygiene” industry.

Why do so many Christians uncritically support psychiatry, psychology, and the mental “health” profession when it is evident that many of them view devout Christian faith and obedience as a sure fire sign of “mental illness???” Before I give any example, let the honest Christian reader versed in the Bible take a break for a minute to determine how that could be the case for themselves: it really isn’t that hard to figure out. Have none of them ever heard unbelievers say that “Christianity itself is a mental illness” and other similar comments?????

Many psychiatrists/psychologists are very biased and antagonistic toward Christianity — especially the fundamentalists — and could secretly find ways to harass them. Because it is not a science, and there exists is no real way to tell the real cases of insanity from the fake, and there is also no due process for the involuntarily committed, this would be far easier than most people would dare to realize.

If Jesus Christ and the Prophet Jeremiah had been around today, there is little doubt in my mind psychiatry would have been used against them, and most people (including so-called “Christians”) would be too rebellious and unbelieving to see it, and would aggressively defend the actions of the evil doers under the sinful cloak of “mental heath” and “safety,” rather than suffer for the truth.

I believe people who are not insane at all could be committed “as a danger to self or others” because of a purposeful distortion and/or even an out-and-out lie against their devoutly held Christian beliefs. The article “Christian loses suit over ‘gay’ Jesus case”

(Read more at points in that direction for the truly discerning with eyes to see and hears to hear who is willing to connect the dots.

Michael Marcavage was lucky he encountered mental “health” workers who either weren’t totally biased or were secretly too afraid to do anything to him. God must have had mercy on him there. I put this comment here for those who believe “we should all lock up the crazies” without discrimination or recourse. You just might be consenting to evil!!!! Be careful who you are really serving!!!!!

Oh, and for those of them claiming to love America and freedom, their words betray their hypocrisy!!!! If it is suspected “the crazies” have committed a crime or have made death threats, put them in jail!!! At least there they will be given a trial and not tortured by things like electro-shock “therapy,” mind-altering drugs that can actually create insanity (by default), etc.

I pray that the LORD will help those few who are trying to bring this evil to the light!!! I believe psychiatry has always been a corrupt tree from its foundation and its root — therefore it does not and cannot produce a good fruit!!!! I believe Christians should definitely avoid it and go to God, the church, or even elsewhere for help!!!!

I am NOT a Pentecostal or Charismatic either!!! I am just a Bible-believing Christian who actually cares and has the nerve to say it online!!! I am so sick of the lies and compromise among those who should know better!!! I am appalled more Christians, especially men in the ministry, do not take this stand!!! The end must be near!!!!

  • Mary Mommy Happy 2016!

So I spent most of the day reading his 141-page manifesto.

Not only was Elliot Rodger sexist against women. He was also very liberal racist and was a entitled elitism prick also.

“While I was suffering this lonely existence, other boys my age lived their happy lives of pleasure and sex. I can never forgive such an injustice, and it was my bid to overcompensate for it in the future. I had to make up for all the years I lost in loneliness and isolation, through no fault of my own! It was society’s fault for rejecting me. It was women’s fault for refusing to have sex with me.

The move to Santa Barbara is the endgame, the ultimate climax of everything. I saw it as a new chance that was given to me to finally have the things I want in life: love, sex, friends, fun, acceptance, a sense of belonging. But I could never forgive the world for denying me such things in the past. I was already turning twenty soon. I had already lost many years of my life. I deserve better than that. I am an intelligent gentleman, and I deserve the love of girls more than the other obnoxious boys of my age, and yet they get girls and I don’t. That is a crime that can never be forgotten, nor can it be forgiven. I was giving the world one last chance to give me the life that I know I’m entitled to, the life that other boys are able to live with ease. If I still have to suffer the same rejection and injustice even after I move to Santa Barbara, then that will be the last straw. I will have my vengeance. ”

“My first week turned out to be very unpleasant, leaving a horrific first impression of my new life in Santa Barbara. My two housemates were nice, but they kept inviting over this friend of theirs named Chance. He was black boy who came over all the time, and I hated his cocksure attitude. Inevitably, a vile incident occurred between me and him. I was eating a meal in the kitchen when he came over and started bragging to my housemates about his success with girls.

I couldn’t stand it, so I proceeded to ask them all if they were virgins. They all looked at me weirdly and said that they had lost their virginity long ago. I felt so inferior, as it reminded me of how much I have missed out in life. And then this black boy named Chance said that he lost his virginity when he was only thirteen! In addition, he said that the girl he lost his virginity to was a blonde white girl!
I was so enraged that I almost splashed him with my orange juice. I indignantly told him that I did not believe him, and then I went to my room to cry. I cried and cried and cried, and then I called my mother and cried to her on the phone. How could an inferior, ugly black boy be able to get a white girl and not me? I am beautiful, and I am half white myself. I am descended from British aristocracy.

He is descended from slaves. I deserve it more. I tried not to believe his foul words, but they were already said, and it was hard to erase from my mind. If this is actually true, if this ugly black filth was able to have sex with a blonde white girl at the age of thirteen while I’ve had to suffer virginity all my life, then this just proves how ridiculous the female gender is. They would give themselves to this filthy scum, but they reject ME?

    The injustice!”

“My father drove up to Santa Barbara to meet me a few days later. The two of us went to have lunch at a restaurant in the Camino Real Marketplace, an area that I often frequented. When we sat down at our table, I saw a young couple sitting a few tables down the row. The sight of them enraged me to no end, especially because it was a dark-skinned Mexican guy dating a hot blonde white girl.

I regarded it as a great insult to my dignity. How could an inferior Mexican guy be able to date a white blonde girl, while I was still suffering as a lonely virgin? I was ashamed to be in such an inferior position in front my father. When I saw the two of them kissing, I could barely contain my rage. I stood up in anger, and I was about to walk up to them and pour my glass of soda all over their heads. I probably would have, if father wasn’t there. I was seething with envious rage, and my father was there to watch it all. It was so humiliating.
I wasn’t the son I wanted to present to my father. I should be the one with the hot blonde girl, making my father proud. Instead, my father had to watch me suffer in a pathetic position. Life is so cruel to me. When I said my farewell to father before he drove home, I felt absolutely miserable. I then went back to my room and sulked for hours.”

My new housemates were meant to move into the second bedroom of my apartment on August 5th. I had an anxious feeling of anticipation for what they will be like.

August 5th came quickly, and I prepared myself to be in a pleasant mood to meet them. Their names were Ryan and Angel, and to my dismay they were of Hispanic race. In addition, the two of them were already friends with each other, which meant that they could possibly gang up against me if any conflicts were to arise. They also seemed like rowdy, low-class types. My first impression of them soured me, but I tried to be pleasant and not show it. The two of them acted cordial to me on the first day, but after observing them for a bit, I had a bad feeling that they would be trouble to live with… And they were to be my housemates for a whole year!

When I was alone in my room, I panicked to myself at how dire a situation this was. This was extremely disappointing. I was hoping I would get decent, mature, clean-cut housemates. Instead I got low-class scum. ”

“On the day after, I almost got into a physical fight with Angel. The ugly pig kept acting as if girls thought he was more attractive than me. Hah! I am a beautiful, magnificent gentleman and he is a low-class, pig-faced thug. I had enough of his cocksure attitude, and I started to call him exactly what he was. I tried to insult him as much as I could, telling him how superior I am to him, and saying that he was low-class. He tried to attack me, but Ryan, being the more mellow of the two, held him back. A pity, I was
itching for a chance to hurt that obnoxious little animal. Though I suppose it was for the best… My life was too important to risk doing anything rash. “

  • Emilio Kléber

I’m most of the way through his autobiography/manifesto, and he was definitely right wing. That doesn’t mean anything by itself.. you can be a liberal and still be a psycho killer (e.g. Chris Dorner) .. but let’s not distort the facts to serve a political agenda .. this particular guy, Elliot Rodger, was definitely right wing.

There are numerous passages in his screed where he expresses disdain for “low-class” people, hatred of Indians, African-Americans and Hispanics (especially if they date blonde women). He bemoaned the fact that a black dude he met had sex with a blonde woman because he was descended from slaves while Rodger was descended from the British aristocracy. And there’s one line where he all but says that he has “fascist views.”

    • xstratusx

What do racist views have to do with being right-wing? The Republican party is the party of Civil Rights. The Democrats, including Senator JFK, voted against the Republican Civil Rights act.

      • Emilio Kléber

I should have said “extreme right” .. but I never mentioned Republicans (nor did Elliot Rodger) and I don’t think Republicans vs. Democrats is the same as right wing vs. left wing.. Obama is arguably one of the most right-wing presidents since Hoover.

Actually I just read a bit more of Rodger’s screed and there was also a section where he hates on rich kids from more successful Hollywood families .. I think it is still fair to place him to the right of the political spectrum though. (Again, that doesn’t say anything about right or left wing people in general, a psycho killer can have any kind of political views)

    • CableNewsGuy

Fixation on race and class is a wholly owned subsidiary of the left wing.

    • Oysteria

“There are numerous passages in his screed where he expresses disdain for “low-class” people, hatred of Indians, African-Americans and Hispanics (especially if they date blonde women).”

Aha! Proof he was a right winger! Because only right wingers harbor such thoughts.

And anyone who immediately defines fascism as an exclusively right wing philosophy has given little thought to the complexities of it.

From what I can see, his feelings of rejection for everything he felt entitled to drove his every thought. That is the prism through which he saw everything and was seeking to lay blame everywhere but within himself. He was completely and totally self-absorbed. His actions had nothing to do with his politics, but his his social philosophy was driven (and driven hard) by his narcissism.

    • Corey Dennison

There are numerous passages in his screed where he expresses disdain for
“low-class” people, hatred of Indians, African-Americans and Hispanics
(especially if they date blonde women).

And what about that is ‘right-wing’, pray tell?

He bemoaned the fact that a black dude he met had sex with a blonde
woman because he was descended from slaves while Rodger was descended
      from the British aristocracy.

      Again, how is this ‘right-wing?’

And there’s one line where he all but says that he has “fascist views.”

Which would put him squarely in the good graces of today’s American left.

Try again. You’re not very good at this.

    • robert anthony

Wait…he was a bigot, therefore ‘right-wing’? Piss off troll. If anyone is ‘fascist’ it’s the left…make a list of everything banned, outlawed, regulated, or taxed punitively to ‘guide’ behavior…and then consider the origin…add to that, those who see race in everything, those who draw out the gallows for anyone who thinks differently (Mozilla CEO ring a bell?) that and you’ll find the party of fascism. Grow a brain.

    • robert anthony

It’s such a shame that so many bright, intelligent conservatives must be forced to address such gutter-level idiocy spouted by liberals on almost every issue. How proud your ideology must be for wasting an entire Nation’s time and energy on the need to actually address such childish ignorance and cult-like stupid-spewing as our serious and adult cognition are subject to on a daily basis from your ideology. Way to get nothing ever accomplished, but frustration and demonization. You should all be ashamed…if that was ever possible.

    • robert anthony

So, basically, and this is evident in his manifesto, he bemoaned the ideas of what constitutes ‘masculinity’ and ‘natural selection’ among females…brawn over brains…even attributing his lack of success with women to being a ‘little’ guy. This is a liberal ‘philosophy’…that ‘hyper-masculine’ is bad and the reason for all the ‘injustice’ in the world.

      • Emilio Kléber

He specifically blamed that on the “sexual revolution” of the 60’s.

    • The_Dadster

And what of Rodgers having subscribed to The Young Turks Youtube account?

Just for sh!ts and giggles, I suppose.

He was definitely not a conservative. His views are so out of the mainstream that there is no simple label for them.

He was definitely a misogynist and a racist. His comments are littered with objectifying people based on their gender and race. Of course, he was a sociopath so full of hatred that he ultimately came to hate the whole world (except maybe his dad). Labeling him as simply a misogynist and/or a racist leaves out much of his problems, but is accurate as a partial description of him.

And while he was born of a Caucasian and an Asian parent, he definitely identified as a white person, was embarrassed by his half-Asian heritage, and believed in white superiority.

Not true. Hate crime or hate crime murder is when one kills another for who they happen to be and not for what they have done. If I kill someone for stealing my money, it won’t be a hate crime. If I kill say a sri lankan man because I’m angry at south asians and I really hate them, then that would be a hate crime. But let’s blame the left for your lack of understanding of basic concepts of legal and ethical significance.

Weird thing is, these people actually believe all the disinfo they’re spreading. This long after the gun-control play book was exposed and the liberal-progressives are still following it chapter-and-verse.
    Blame the NRA
Be quick to ‘take control’ of the narrative
Don’t let dry facts and boring statistics spoil the narrative
Do it while fear and uncertainty reign
Remember a lie gets around the world before truth gets her boots on

More people were killed by guns on the same day in a mass shooting in Brussels-a giant “gun free” zone. Perhaps they should ban guns in Brussels? Oh wait! Gun free zones are evil…

  • Largebill

If the president is black then this shooter is Chinese. Here is a better idea, stop worrying about race in every situation. There is nothing in this guys rants that indicates race had anything to do with his rampage.

Let’s not talk about the real stories here-you know, things like “how do we identify and treat mental illness before something bad happens”, “the role of good parenting in ensuring children make good life decisions”, and probably the very least to be discussed, “the center-staging of narcissism and sex in todays social circles and its unintended consequences.”

You know as well as I do if Elliot Rodger won some kind of humanitarian award, they’d call him Chinese but because he killed some people, he’s called white. Now as far as feminists are concerned, they can’t resist using this tragedy as a way to further their man hating agenda.

  • John Trapp

The reason he flipped out is because he’s mentally ill and he should have been in a mental hospital, but no…he’s out walking the streets, driving around in a car, even though his OWN PARENTS called the cops on him, but of course the cops can’t do anything because certain people in this country think getting help for the mentally ill shouldn’t be forced….until they kill people. Look at the absolute hell the parents of Amanda Bynes had to go through to get her involuntarily committed, it took forever, meanwhile she was completely out of her mind attacking people, throwing stuff out windows, starting a fire, almost burning a dog alive, thank God she didn’t kill anyone. And when they FINALLY got her committed, she got the help and medication she needed and now she’s like a completely different person, going back to school, all cleaned up. WHY did her parents have to spend over a year trying to get her committed? She could have died, she could have killed someone yet she was allowed to roam out in public day after day after day. This country needs to take a good hard look at the mental health laws we got and change that sh*t. Whatever happened to the old days when “The men in white suits” came and took mental patients away? When you get hit by a car, do they leave you in the street for months and months? No, they immediately take you to a hospital! WHY isn’t that happening with the mentally ILL? How many more killings have to happen?

Who cares if he was white, non-white, liberal or a conservative. Can we at least agree that there should be some reasonable restrictions on guns. If you have a psychiatric issue, no guns? And a reasonable time before you can go and purchase a gun to make sure your background clears? Say 10 business days? To me this is neither conservative nor liberal. This is just pragmatism. If those on the right can’t see this, then we have a bigger problem on our hands than anything this entitled lunatic could have caused.

    • mike_in_kosovo

Can we at least agree that there should be some reasonable restrictions on guns.

Do we get to make the same ‘reasonable restrictions’ on free speech, or voting?

If you have a psychiatric issue, no guns?

Already existing law. Again, do we get to apply the same to free speech, or voting?

And a reasonable time before you can go and purchase a gun to make sure your background clears? Say 10 business days?

Cali already has a 5 day ‘cooling off’ period… the killer bought his weapons well before the murders.

To me this is neither conservative nor liberal. This is just pragmatism.

No, it’s punishing a group for the actions of an individual. If those on the left can’t see this, then we have a bigger problem on our hands than anything the entitled lunatic could have caused.

      • equityatwork

Yes we do. You can’t vote if you’re under 18 or in prison or have committed a felony. You can’t harrass someone in public under free speech. You can’t yell fire in a movie theater where there is none. Read up on constitutional law. SCOTUS has applied different standards of review (strict scrutiny, rational basis test, etc.) to determine what reasonable restrictions can be applied to constitutional rights. As another example, just because your religion allows your to have 4 wives (Islam), doesn’t mean congress cannot curtail that right. If my suggestions are put in place, I don’t see how it punishes a group besides people like Elliot Rogers who may not get to go around shooting folks.

        • mike_in_kosovo

You can’t vote if you’re under 18 or in prison or have committed a felony.

You can’t buy a handgun if you’re under 21 or in prison or have committed a felony. Try again.

You can’t harrass someone in public under free speech.

Wrong – see ‘heckler’s veto’ and, as an exemplar, Westboro Baptist Church. Try again.

You can’t yell fire in a movie theater where there is none. Read up on Constitutional law

Take your own advice – start your research with ‘prior restraint’. By your logic, moviegoers would be gagged to prevent them from yelling fire. Try again.

If my suggestions are put in place, I don’t see how it punishes a group besides people like Elliot Rogers who may not get to go around shooting folks.

Yes, because people weren’t trying to buy a gun for self protection during the Rodney King riots. Women with abusive husbands can afford to wait an extra week – it’s not like he’s going to break that restraining order *again*, like he did when he put her in the E.R. the week before…right?

The fact that *YOU* can’t see the downside is prima facie evidence that you’ve barely put any thought into the matter at all outside of sound-bite solutions.

          • equityatwork

You’re arguing for the sake of arguing. You’re arguing that we can’t put some reasonable restrictions on a right by pointing out we already have some in place. Pointing out emotionally charged hypothetical evidence shows you can’t be reasoned with. Time we start blaming the wrongdoer rather than those liberals for not letting everyone in America be armed up. Would you at least agree that there should be a restriction on how many bullets one can buy? Would you say how many ever he had, which was over 400 I believe should just be an automatic no-no? Or will you give me a hypo where a woman has a restraining order against 400 different dudes because she keeps denying them?

          • mike_in_kosovo

You’re arguing that we can’t put some reasonable restrictions on a right by pointing out we already have some in place.

Wrong – I’m asking if you’re willing to have those same additional restrictions placed on other rights.

Pointing out emotionally charged hypothetical evidence shows you can’t be reasoned with.

Emotionally charged evidence…you mean like your point of ‘only people like Rodgers will be inconvenienced’? Or your ‘restraining orders against 400 different guys’ idiocy?

Please contact these families and let them know that the deaths of their loved ones were ‘hypothetical’:

Would you at least agree that there should be a restriction on how many bullets one can buy?

Sure…as soon as you can tell me just *which* person is going to snap at some point in the future.

          • Parnell

Who are you to decide how many rounds of ammo I can own. At present, I have over 5,000 rounds of assorted calibers in my safe and I’ve never shot anything but paper or steel. I travel to the range with 400 rounds consistently without any death or mayhem. Stop coming up with “brilliant” ideas that punish the law-abiding.

    • SorryJeffersonWeTried

But what about the knives? He killed three people with a knife! Why do you hate children and sorority girls so much?

      • equityatwork

Knives serve another purpose in everyday life of almost every single person I have known. Guns don’t. Also, guns make it exponentially easier to kill. That’s the same reason we have outlawed other weapons, such as rocket launchers and hydrogen bombs. If you think everything should be legal, should nukes be? My point is we as a society should draw a line somewhere. And trust me I don’t hate sorority girls and they don’t mind me either, kids are annoying though. But nice try.

        • SorryJeffersonWeTried

No we haven’t outlawed rockey launchers and hydrogen bombs. The government has access/use of such weaponry. Just because you insist on being a slave, dont force it on others.
And you sound like a liberal, so you must hate sorority girls and children. It’s a given, one of your own just killed three. You libs get the same logic back that you’ve thrown around for years.
          Deal with it.

          • equityatwork

Army is above civil law in this regards, if you can’t comprehend that then I suggest taking a class in logic. Also, yeah a gun-nut upper class entitled ayn randian just kills three people from my favorite demographic and I am the illogical one. Keep your guns and give us the sorority girls, and then you can move to somalia. Take your version of jefferson too, leave us the enlightened deist Jefferson.

Yeah anti-feminists are famously known to be liberals. Ok buddy got it.

Anymore bullshit stereotypes you want to adhere to while pushing that stupid agenda? Because that’s EXACTLY how the black market operates: you just walk up to any minority in the hood, and boom, you have all the weapons and drugs you could possibly want.

    • SorryJeffersonWeTried

That provision already exists. I know of no State in the Union where one can cash n carry a handgun.

I think it should be ignored that more men than women were killed, it has very little to do with his motivation. He could have killed 100 men and he still would have been motivated by a hatred for women. He did target men, but it was his opinion that women caused men to be that way and that these men were simply doing the intelligent thing by being “hedonistic”, “successful”, “brutes”, as you put it. He wrote that women are below men and incapable of critical thought, he merely thought the other men were evil by being ensnared by evil women. He thought that the evil of men was a byproduct of the evil of women.

The question we ought to be asking is how is that feelings of hate and belittlement amongst men have led to some forums championing and applauding individuals such as Elliot Rodger and to what degree do his actions represent seething tensions amongst men who feel that on some level they are being overlooked, disregarded, even sidelined and negated by women, which our society so often insists is the only gender being suppressed…
