RedState is under fire for a post mischaracterizing remarks by and using a photoshopped picture of Sarah Palin:

(Image via Stacy Drake)

Some readers viewed the picture as sexist and demeaning — and the last thing conservative women need from their own side. But there’s an even bigger problem with the photo: It isn’t real.

In an excellent blog post, Stacy Drake notes that the image in question was taken from The Fiscal Times, a left-wing site. And The Fiscal Times’ photo was a hatchet job:

(Image via Stacy Drake)

Monday evening, RedState editor-in-chief Erick Erickson took to Twitter to deny that the image had been photoshopped. He subsequenly deleted the tweet, but not before Stacy Drake captured a screencap:

Erickson’s colleague Ben Howe, a RedState contributing editor, also appeared to vouch for the photo’s authenticity:

He mocked those who complained about the image:

After it became clear that the photo was fake, Howe lashed out at Sarah Palin’s defenders, calling them “insane,” “perpetually offended” “cultists”:

At the time of this writing, the photoshopped “photo” is still up on RedState’s site.

According to blogger Jen Kuznicki, Peter List, the author of the contentious piece, “responded to an email, saying that he honestly thought the picture of Palin was a flattering, real picture of her, and ran out of time to replace the pic before the whole thing blew up.” That may well be what happened. But once it became clear that the image was phony, would it have been so difficult for Erickson and Howe to acknowledge their misstatements rather than deleting a tweet (Erickson) or attacking those who complained (Howe)?

What message are they sending to conservative women like blogger Stacy Drake, whose views diverge from their own?

What? The GOP elites are as condescending and arrogant as the democrat party?

No! I have NOT known that since 2008!

    Oh wait, actually I have.

RedState stands for a lie. Got it.

  • bkeyser

I stopped frequenting RedState some time ago when EE went on some rampage and started kicking members. I can’t even remember what it was about, but this incident is a sort of doubling-down on that rather childish event.

People make mistakes. There’s nothing wrong with criticizing your own side, but too often “clicks” dictate and honesty and integrity are left by the wayside.

    Grow up, RedState.

    • Joe W.

That was when Sarah Palin balked at her decision to run for POTUS in 2012. Erick melted down and threw a hissy fit. I haven’t been back since.

      • gary4205

Actually Sarah never even started a presidential run. It was all a bunch of hopeful thinking by the faithful.

Looking at the 2012 fiasco, she looks like a genius for sitting the damned thing out!

        • free4now

I stopped dropping by their site when they threatened to kick folks from interacting if they criticized Mitt Romney during the pres campaign. Reminded me of how libs block folks whom they’ve lost an argument to.

      • Finrod Felagund

Well, their site rules are “conservative in the primary, Republican in the general” and “no advocating of third parties”. Once Romney had the nomination sewn up, he’s the nominee, and they’re just applying their site rules then. Same thing happened in 2008 once McCain got the nomination.

What gets me is that sometimes the front-pagers ignore the site rules which is something they ban ordinary users for. That, I call them out on, every time.

        • gary4205

A site with INTEGRITY doesn’t run that way. And there is NOTHING “conservative” about that hate site.

I read the rules yesterday, it’s either worship the GOP or STFU. No talk of any alternatives of any kind are allowed are allowed.

RedState will be a completely dead website in a years or so.

          • Finrod Felagund

Yeah yeah, troll. They’ve been around since 2004 and will continue to be around when you’ve gotten bored, left, and been forgotten.

They have their rules about posting that are more strict than most, for example no obscenities are allowed. On that rule alone they probably could have banned you half a dozen times if you tried posting there like you are here.

          • gary4205

Well, our site has been around since 2008, we allow people to speak their mind, as long as they aren’t stupid, or use excessive profanity. We have some lively debate on some issues, and a bunch of “hell yeahs” on others.

Some get a bunch of hits and few comments at all!

You know what we have NEVER done? Disrespect a fellow Conservative, let alone the leader of the Conservative movement.

We don’t even treat liberals, when writing about them, the way the hacks at RedState have treated Sarah Palin for the past 5 or 6 years.

BTW, our website will be around for a long, long time. And we’ll still be relevant, and still won’t worship at the alter of ANY political party

RedState is all about party over principle, that’s why it’s a JOKE to everyone but the few who still hang on.

          • Finrod Felagund

Well, clearly you’ve never heard of Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment.

          • gary4205

Reagan ripped the hell out of George H W Bush in the debates!

It’s funny, any time a sad, pathetic, liberal “republican” is getting their ass kicked in a argument, they bring up Reagan’s “11th” Fact is, Reagan only meant to go a LITTLE easier on fellow Conservatives, he had no use for liberals, in either party.

            Nice try though!

BTW, THIS is how Reagan treated idiot liberal republicans!

This is Ronald Reagan in Nashua, New Hampshire. A thing of beauty!

          • BAW

I’ve not only heard of it, I know where it came from and why and what it means. I’m not sure you do.

Or maybe you just aren’t familiar enough with Reagan’s style. He was never rude, he had class. He would never have said anything about anybody like the offensive things said about Palin by her critics on the right. Reagan was a gentleman even when he was taking a shot at someone. Mondale had to laugh when Reagan said he wasn’t going to make age an issue either, “I’m not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponents youth and inexperience.”

          • Finrod Felagund

Oh, I’m well familiar with Ronald Reagan and his style. I remember when he was first elected and thinking that we finally had a President in the White House that we can respect.

He also would not have wanted his defenders to treat anyone the way gary4205 and TEXs are treating people here.

          • BAW

“Respect” is exactly the right word. It seems clear to me you respect RedState and you have defended them with a passion in this kerfuffle. And although I think it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest we know what behavior Reagan would or would not have approved, I assume your point is he wouldn’t approve of what you see as disrespectful.

Putting aside the photoshop issue (that’s done) I think we are still left with an issue of respect. We all have different sensibilities and different ideas of what is or what is not respectful but since we agree that Reagan was big on respect you’d think we’d have more common ground.

Apparently, we don’t. You and Mr. Howe don’t see anything disrespectful about the picture or how it was used (or apparently calling people who did, “insane cultists”). Disagreeing with something she said by equating it to believing in Santa is no different to me than when Obama mentioned the Flat Earth Society in a petty swipe at anyone who dares to disagree with him on climate change. (He doesn’t even waste time demeaning individuals, he just disrespects whole groups all at once.)

It reminds me of when everyone knew Jay Carney had crossed a line when he told the WH press they might as well ask to see Obama’s birth certificate. (He too was attacking his own side.)

I expect all the disrespect from the left. Particularly for conservative women who get a double dose just as minority conservatives do. But you see I think the “real men” (the kind I like and respect the most) are on the right. And I expect them to be generally more respectful. Although I understood completely when Cheney said what he said to Leahy because people can only take so much. I understand righteous indication and humor and am offended by neither. But I do expect conservative men to be particularly respectful of women. Not because we can’t take it, the women on the right have proven they can take it and give back as good as they get. Maybe it’s old fashioned but I raised two sons who understand it. And I’m sorry you and RedState disagree.

            It’s late, I’ve rambled, whatever.

          • Finrod Felagund

You’re putting words in my mouth that I didn’t say. That isn’t very respectful, either. Look at where I agreed with user socon who said “Well, they were wrong and should have manned up about it.” You can’t find any words that I’ve posted where I said I didn’t see anything disrespectful about the picture, because I didn’t.

If someone is being disrespectful, it doesn’t give you the immediate right to go nuclear on them and be disrespectful right back. That is the point that I have been making repeatedly, which few people seem to understand.

I enjoy a good flame war as much as the next fellow, and very arguably even more so, at least when they’re creative and not just hurling lame insults and making exaggerated assertions of fact that are really just opinion– which describes a lot of the negative things said about RedState here. Personally, I’m careful to distinguish between things I know to be fact and what is my opinion, which far too many people don’t do. I also enjoy playing devil’s advocate, because we should be our own worst critic as to what we say and how we say it.

I also have a low tolerance for back-biting and in-fighting among people that should be allies– see the Ronald Reagan quote about someone that you agree with 80 percent of the time being your 80 percent ally not your 20 percent enemy. Frankly, RedState and Twitchy probably agree 80 percent of the time, at least, so IMHO flaming them to the extent that’s been done here isn’t something that I think Ronald Reagan would approve of.

We need to remember who our true enemies are: the Democratic Party and the leftists that control it. Those are people that would be very happy to see us all die in a fire, and every bit of energy we spend fighting amongst ourselves is energy we could have spent fighting them instead.

          • BAW

Fine, Finrod I won’t waste another word.

          • Spiny Norman

“Well, clearly you’ve never heard of Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment.”

          • mike_in_kosovo

Well, clearly you’ve never heard of Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment.

We can plainly see that Ben Howe hasn’t.

          • Finrod Felagund

Well, it’s a good thing I’m not defending Ben Howe, am I?

          • http://www.redstateeclectic.com AngelaTC

maybe you’ve forgotten that Reagan broke it. when he tried to primary Ford, possibly costing him the general.

And maybe you don’t know that he didn’t even actually invent it. It came from the head of the CA GOP, who told the moderates that they had to support Goldwater now that he was the nominee.

          • David Pellikan

He did not break the rule. Ford was not elected to either office. He was appointed VP after Agnew resigned. Then Prez after Nixon resigned. He never had the backing of the electorate. Ergo said rule is not applicable.

          • http://redstate.com/ midwestconservative

I’d hardly call 76′, Reagan attempting to “primary” Ford. Ford originally never intended to run for President. Nor was he ever elected to the executive branch. Many more people other than Reagan also ran in 76 and didn’t gain any traction. For all intents and purposes most saw 76′ as an open race.

      • gary4205

EXACTLY like the loons at the Daily Kos and Democrat Underground act.

Red State has banned so many people they only have a handful of commenters any more!

        • Spiny Norman

DU’s Great Purge of 2004 was hilarious at the time. Too bad the banned members fanned out to infest other popular sites that were not so overtly political at the time, but now have been assimilated into the “Borg” of the Liberal Left, like Fark.

The moderators on that site are horrible people. I intentionally provoked them into kicking me about 5 minutes after i joined, because i joined specifically to point out that they were by far the worst offenders of the site’s civility rules.

Thank you Twitchy crew for bringing this drama to a wider audience! It’s amazing how many double standards are applied to Sarah Palin, usually to her detriment…

Why is that? She’s been out of office for four years.

    WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF?

    • wwbdinct

Why is it that these “men” can’t circle the wagons for a conservative woman like the left always does for their own? Maybe they should stop trying to appeal to Hispanics (which ain’t gonna happen anyway) and start defending the conservative WOMEN, no matter who that may be. I’m tired of the attacks on Palin from the left – I won’t tolerate it at all from men who would seek to court my vote!

That she would Harold in the end of their elites “reach around fest” putting them out of a job if the old school GOPers were sent packing. We are not afraid of her. We are tired of her whining, lies, and never, once, having a solution to anything. She is an attack dog for Fox, knows and recites all the dog whistles, but has no clue what she is even discussing. Come on, when did she ever sit for an interview off Fox after the Couric debacle? Not in five years has she been anywhere but ‘feed me the questions ahead of time” Fox.

Anyone with a first-year familiarity with photography should have been able to tell that picture was fake; they didn’t even bother angling Palin’s head to fit properly on Cleavage Woman’s neck, and the effort they put into matching the skin tones was lazy at best. On top of that, the lines on the lock of hair over Santa’s beard are terrible – almost looks like it was done by someone with a basic line selection tool but not enough energy to do it properly.

  • Joe W.

When Sarah Palin took her time in deciding whether or not to enter into the 2012 Presidential race, Erick Erikson had an incredibly pathetic meltdown, wherein he every hour on the hour mocked, chided and scolded Gov. Palin for her lack of “courtesy” in pleasing the Red State Gang with her decision according to the time frame they demanded. After that and all of the nastiness he threw at conservatives who back the Governor, I decided that I had had it with his pitiable blog site, and I have not clicked on a page there since. Nor will I. these people are so full of themselves and are so sanctimonious in their self righteous, grandiosity, that they deserve no attention from serious conservatives. Ben Howe is merely Erick’s little lap dog and the whole lot of them can kiss my Palin supporting azz.

    • Finrod Felagund

I hate deception in journalism, this may seem trivial to them but GOP donors and supporters are looking for accountability in their leaders, and these hacks are representative of the manipulative tactics that so many Republicans have adopted, either from the Democrats, from the media or out of their own greed.
The largest growing part of the electorate are informed and educated voters. This can help or hurt the GOP. but it’s not helping this site.

    • gary4205

Thing is, as, how shall we say it, “shapely” as Governor Palin is, there are NO legit photos of her showing cleavage. And why Santa Claus in JULY. This is about their insane hatred for Palin, and an attempt to demean her. It ain’t just the photo, it’s the crap article that goes with it.

RedState has been notoriously anti-Palin for years.

BUT, Erickson had the nerve to write another piece of crap today, using a photo of him standing with Governor Palin. [I think when she flew to South Carolina to endorse Nikki Haley.] Despicable.

      • wwbdinct

As if there is NOTHING else in the world going on to write about, they have to do a hit piece on Palin! To what end – why?

        • gary4205

Because Sarah called out the corrupt bastards in BOTH parties several times in the past week.

What set these loons on edge though was when she appeared on Fox with Uma [I can’t even attempt to spell her last name]

Anyhow, before Palin came on, they had asked people to tweet questions for Sarah. As it happens, the only question asked was by our buddy Josh Painter, a fellow Texan, and Palinista.

Josh wanted to know what Sarah thought about starting a “Freedom Party”. She thought that was pretty good! Mark Levin was right there singing her praises. The left and the GOP “good old boys” IMMEDIATELY lost it!

SO, hate mongers like the jackasses at RedState went to work.

If you gte “Google Alerts” on Sarah Palin daily, you’d see dozens of articles claiming “She’s leaving the GOP !!!!!11!!!!!”

          Hilarious!

I was watching that interview live. I even tweeted that someone in Alaska needed to adjust the lighting in the remote. Sarah looked like she was there to discuss being in the witness protection program.

Yeah the lighting was “challenged” to say the least. They have been having an issue. You know that studio is upstairs, over Todd’s big barn. They missed the Hannity interview, evidently because of technical issues. That equipment set unused for 6 months in the COLD. May have to work out some bugs.

      • Finrod Felagund

So what was “crap” about it? I commented there several times in that very article.

Well, a mature and professionally run site would have simply pulled the picture while they checked it’s authenticity.. then issued a public apology.

a mature and professionally run site that is.

Sadly, Erickson and Howe look like too immature assclowns attacking readers for DARING to catch their moronic mistake..

I don’t get what is insulting about posing with Santa Claus, shooped or not.

    • gary4205

Read the article as you look at the photo RedState has become a hate site like the Daily Kos or HuffPoo

      • RememberSekhmet

I read the article. At one point it said that going third party is like waiting for Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, and the picture was non-derpy and had Santa Claus. It was appropriate to the article. The article had a fair point to make, whether or not you agree. If people are going to go all bugsnot for someone saying, “Hey, Sara Palin made noises like xxx, and I think that’s a bad idea because yyy,” how are folks going to be able to tell unfair criticism from fair?

        • Steve_Flesher

They were politely asked to remove it. It wasn’t about their argument. The photo was demeaning and disgraceful and folks asked them politely to change it.

          • Finrod Felagund

Well, they were impolitely asked a lot as well.

          • Steve_Flesher

I will admit I saw one unhinged tweet sent to Howe, and it was disrespectful. But I assure you those people have no contact with the respectful folks who reached out to him showcased above.

          • Finrod Felagund

Well, I sent polite email to the RedState contact address noting the picture was fake, where it was from, and that leaving it up doesn’t look good for the site. I’ll let you know what kind of response I get.

        • gary4205

Well that was idiotic too! If Red State wasn’t just a front for the Republican Establishment, without conservative bone in it’s proverbial body they’d know MILLIONS are chomping at the bit for something new.

Of course, the idiots at RedState hate Palin so much that they fail to understand what she’s really up to. One only has to look at the last two decades of her outsmarting corrupt Republicans to figure it out.

Hate is a powerful thing, and clouds the brain. Over at RedState, the fog is as thick as pea soup!

    • TEXs

You don’t get it because you are either libtard or spineless RINO.

      Which is it?!

      • RememberSekhmet

Neither. It was not an unflattering picture, and Santa Claus was referenced in the article. I’m just unwilling to overreact every time someone disagrees with Sarah Palin. We have our 0bama problem in part because lefties conflate legitimate criticism of 0bama and his policies with raaaaacism.

        • friskyness

when the left cries “racist!” that means they just lost the argument…..everyone else needs to stand up to the lies, otherwise they will continue….stand up to a bully, otherwise he will not stop……Liberals=racists!

        • hope4palins

The point is not whether the picture was flattering or unflattering.

The point is, the picture is false. Gov. Palin has never been photgraphed in that kind of neckline, period. Never happened. Created on a computer. A photographic lie. That is the problem, creating/using a false photographic image and then claiming it is real when it is not.

          • gary4205

Worse than that, the hate filled RedState jackasses had to go to a FAR LEFT hate site to GET that photo!

Then those idiots claim it wasn’t photoshopped, when a blind man could tell it was! I mean it is a BAD photoshop job. Real amateurish, like RedState!

  • Jack Deth

I have only gone to redstate’s site once and didn’t think it was anything special.I have seen Erick Erickson on TV before and he sounded like a blowhard

  • Jeremy

Erick Erickson is acting like an elitist hack.He knows damn well that is a photo shopped picture and sounds like he is still mad at Palin.

  • aposematic

Hey RedState, when you screw up really bad stop digging. You, Ben, seem to be the cultist that refuses to stop digging.

  • Jeremy

That is very telling of the character of the people on that site that they would use a photo shopped pic off a left wing nut site.

  • BoscoBolt

Erikson / Howe / RedState have been living in complete fear of Sarah Palin for years – this is a typical move by them – AND, you had better believe that they knew all along that the photo was fake; THEY thought it was a funny way to insult Sarah. THEY think WE are stupid; WE are not.

    • Jeremy

Yeah but, that is how elitists like them operate they act they know better then anyone. They knew it was a fake photo and like you said it’s all about their fear of Palin.

  • Markward

Hey Redstate, f***ing man up and admit you used a fake picture!

    • Jeremy

They probably won’t since they are doubling down on it.

  • KansasGirl

  • Stephen L. Hall

It is hard for many people to keep acrimony out of a discussion when the topic touches upon fundamental principles. This goes for the RedState guys as well as some of the responders here. Nothing gets quite as mean as an internecine contest over the strategy between idealism and pragmatism. Personally, I’d choose idealism. And I’d avoid cheap cleavage photo-shop shots which distract from the point of an article. But when you err, and we all have, admit it and move on.

    • gary4205

Nah, Erickson and Howe need a good old fashioned ass whipping. Since that isn’t possible, we’ll rip them to shreds this way.

      • Stephen L. Hall

        Well then, have fun . . . I tried.

    • hope4palins

      Thank you.

  • Finrod Felagund

Uh, guys, the same day that article was posted with the bogus picture, Erick Erickson posted his own piece there defending Palin:

    http://www.redstate.com/2013/07/02/go-rogue-or-go-home/

Rant about RedState all you want, but if you mention one Palin article there and completely fail to mention another posted the same day, then you’re being as biased as you say they are.

Yes, the Santa picture was bogus and they should have taken it down ASAP, and yes Erickson was a pissant back in October 2011 to Palin. Doesn’t make this article any better, though.

    • Steve_Flesher

This wasn’t the mention of an “article.” It was about one photo which was purposely photo-shopped by lefties to demean Governor Palin.

      • Finrod Felagund

The picture was part of an article, was it not? It wasn’t posted all by its lonesome.

        • Steve_Flesher

They could have changed the picture. It was never implied that it was posted maliciously. It was the reaction to the polite request to change it once it was brought to their attention that was disturbing. Red State is a conservative website. We only hold people to standards when we expect them to have them, and I’d expect Erickson and the folks at RedState to have them. And that is meant with respect.

          • Right_Wingnut

Spot on. I’m willing to concede that the author probably didn’t know it was a fake photo, although it was a curious choice for the article in question. Pride got in the way when it was pointed out that it was a photoshop, and they were asked politely to replace it. How does that help RS and the conservative movement in the long run?

          • Mary Beth House

I think it hurts even more when a request to change out a fake pic is met with cries of cultism by people who are supposedly our allies in the fight.

          • gary4205

That’s who they are. Don’t let it bother ya. They are the ones with serious problems, not the rest of us.

          • Mary Beth House

No …well, it bothers me but it doesn’t “bother” me. :)

          • gary4205

I hear ya! You’re good people! I’ve just dealt with so many of these haters I have no empathy for them, or patience. They knew EXACTLY what they were trying to do, and then went crazy attacking us, when called out. This is exactly how liberal democrats act.

          • Finrod Felagund

I agree about the photo. I’m just pointing out that this article isn’t just about the photo.

          • gary4205

The RedState “article” was crap too. Full of lies and half truths. Just typical hate from that bunch. It’s who they are.

          • Finrod Felagund

What part of ‘I agree about the photo’ do you not understand?

        • Right_Wingnut

I know you’re one of the few Palin defenders at RS, but this post is not about the article. I disagree with the article, but that’s OK. This is all about the fake photo. The one you agree should have been replaced. That’s it. It shouldn’t have gotten to this point, but I suppose it means a few more clicks a RS,

          • Finrod Felagund

Um, if the post isn’t about the article, then why does it start:

“RedState is under fire for a post mischaracterizing remarks by …”

          • gary4205

Because it IS about the hate filled RS post!

          • Right_Wingnut

It does say that, but you and I both know this post wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the photo. Since we seem to agree about the photo, I’m not sure what the dispute is here.

    • Mary Beth House

Erik posted that well after things had started to explode. My sense was that it was an attempt to placate, even though the remedy for the mistake would have been to simply change out the photo.

Even though we disagree with the content of the first post with the pic, our issue was with the photo on that post. As I tried to say to one of the editors, we can debate the content without the picture, which is demeaning. It lessens them to have continued to use it even after being shown it was a leftist Photoshop job.

And frankly, I’m just a bit saddened that their response was to lash out and attack. I can’t speak for random supporters, but C4P editors tried to be supremely respectful, even though we continued to be attacked by our “friends” at Redstate for being obsessed worshipers, as I was by one of their editors.

It’s a shame they couldn’t have just said, “Whoops, my bad!” and change the pic and instead decided to hunker down and lob verbal grenades at anyone who called them out not only for the picture, but also for how they behaved in the aftermath.

  • friskyness

The “insanity” is coming from Red State, not Palin supporters! Red State is acting like a child who got caught doing a bad thing…..and trying to come up with an excuse…

  • http://www.HallandaleBeachBlog.blogspot.com/ HallandaleBeachBlog

In a slightly related matter that I wrote about on my blog last year because it was starting to drive me crazy -and subsequent conversations with friends of all stripes agreed with me that it was both intentional and patronizing once I pointed it out to them- who do so many in the news media and blogosphere, left and right, legacy and digital, continue to use VERY OLD photos of the large/fat Rush Limbaugh from the mid-90’s, pre-surgery?

Rush Limbaugh is THE most-popular radio personality in America, one of the most-influential persons in the entire country of over 300 million, and has been for many years. Yet even if you only spend a little time on the Internet, it’s hard not to be confronted with the fact there’s probably nobody in the U.S. more famous and more VISIBLE who continues to have 15-20 year old photos of them intentionally used in news articles, columns and blog posts.
    Why?

    I just don’t get it.
We know what he looks like now, so why the resistance to using current photos?.
Answer is obvious -because in many cases the people who write about him want to ridicule him and create a negative image of him before you even read the first word.

As soon as I saw that photo of Gov. Palin at RS the day it ran, I was highly suspicious and mindful of the same curious photo choices that are made with Rush Limbaugh.

Glad to see my intuition confirmed again and also see honest people call it for what it is -patronizing and condescending, whether intentional or not.

    • gary4205

Don’t forget that Google and Bing also manipulate photos and how they come up in searches.

Google Palin or any Conservative and “evil” then do the same to any democrat, BUT Obama, and you’ll see what I mean.

The number of photoshopped Palin pics, with her body on a porn star, fat hog in a bikini by a pool, holding a machine gun, and so on, are unreal. Also photoshopped nudes.

  • col

The problem is that the picture is fake.

      • col

Yes I know. If you read the first sentence of my post, I said, I see nothing wrong with the picture if it was real. That indicates that I know it’s not real.

        • Finrod Felagund

Some people seem to have gotten all bent out of shape that the article criticized Palin, even though there was another article there posted the same day that mostly agreed with her.

    • gary4205

The photo is fake, and RedState deliberately used it to degrade Governor Palin.

  • radicallyalyssa

OK…I need some filling in, apparently. I was only 15 during the last election. What makes this picture demeaning? I mean, I see that it was used for a parody article, but I’m not seeing what makes this photo demeaning. Anyone willing to explain? <3

    • Finrod Felagund

If it was real it’d be fine, but it isn’t; it was a photoshop job by a lefty site.

      • radicallyalyssa

And I understand that, but I guess I missed the memo that Photoshop = demeaning.

        • Finrod Felagund

From what I understand there aren’t any genuine photos of Sarah Palin that show her cleavage.

    • gary4205

Well first, it’s photoshopping Governor Palin’s head on someone else’s body. There are literally MILLIONS of great photos that are actually Sarah Palin. Also, Governor Palin is a mother of 5, grandmother of 2, and the leader of the Conservative movement. She was also a vice presidential candidate. It’s called RESPECT, something the thugs at RedState don’t care about.

Here’s the thing, out of ALL of the REAL photos of Governor Palin out there, including her in workout gear, fishing attire, and even evening dress, there are NO cleavage shots of her.

Oh, and what kind of moron thinks Santa Claus is relevant IN JULY?

Fact is, the hate filled clowns at RedState had to go to a far left liberal hate site, to get that photo in the first place!

RedState does not respect women. Never has, neither has it’s editor Erick Erickson. He recently wrote one of the most idiotic anti-woman rants I’ve ever seen. He then was stupid enough to show up on Fox to defend it. Those gals there chewed him up and spit him out! Then he went crying to he handful of readers!

      He’s a tool.

      • radicallyalyssa

Thank you. I had no idea about RedState, so I guess I didn’t understand it like everyone else! I really appreciate your answer<33

  • Sentinel34

The author attempted to make an idiotic metaphoric correlation between those conservatives that would entertain the idea of forming a third party to a pipe dream belief in Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy. Oh the irony. Anyone paying attention lately can clearly see that the spineless GOPe is being herded down the Big Government path where an analogy to Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy seems to be much more realistic. The fact that they used a photoshopped pic of Sarah with Santa was rubbing salt in the wound.

    • Finrod Felagund

Well, you have to understand that at RedState, third-party talk is against site rules. The rationale is that splintering conservatives between multiple parties just ends up electing the Democrat. The alternative is for conservatives to take over the Republican Party via participation as precinct committeemen and make the Republican Party a true conservative party, the way the liberals took over the Democratic Party to make it a liberal party.

      • Sentinel34

I agree with the concept in principle but there is a pervasive lack of due diligence when it comes to putting it in practice.

        • Finrod Felagund

Yeah, that’s why about half of the precinct committeemen slots in the Republican Party are vacant.

      • daeghrefn

And they think the best way to do that is constantly demeaning Sarah Palin. If they aren’t the GOPe, they’re just as stupid.

  • BAW

I don’t remember what it was about RedState that caused me to stop going there but it has been a couple of years since I stopped reading anything they do.

    • Finrod Felagund

That’s about when the last site redesign was. You’re not the only one that stopped going around that time.

      • BAW

I said I didn’t remember, but I know it had to do with content not design.

        • Finrod Felagund

Unfortunately the redesign really did a number on the member diaries, which was one of the really good features there, so the content took a nosedive at the same time.

  • Moto

The women are the ones “fragging” the men with invented claims of “sexism”, a piece of leftist feminist tactical strategy. With them, the intent was to produce a harmonious “equality” that actually could never happen because different people are different. I don’t know what the purpose of the women doing it here is, perhaps to wrest power from the men of the Right. In any case, you’re cutting the Right’s throat by introducing this divisive socialist agitprop into our ordering and organizational scheme. Despite the presence of great female politicos and writers, most of the talent and ambition will come from men because people are different and one of the differences between them is that women tend to be mediocre on average while the norm for men is that they are usually either inferior or exceptional. By randomly targeting men for false claims of sexism you are creating, in net effect, a “hostile workplace” which works against the aims of the Right by driving out these exceptional men who will outnumber exceptional women 5 to 1,even in the best case scenario, and even if aggressive Soviet Union-style equalization measures are taken to produce or invent from whole cloth more exceptional females.

    Think before you feminist.

  • Exodus2011

I think Erickson and Ben howe act like this because they are part of the racketeering GOPe Consultancy Class, and see Gov Palin as a threat to their livelihood.

Erickson and Howe do not respect Gov Sarah Palin.

I do not have any respect for them.

    • stevethird

This is what the GOPe thinks of her. They ain’t gonna’ change their minds. They are too invested in being deluded. IMHO she will never be their nominee, If we are to have a President Palin it will have to be by some alternative route. Talk of “taking over the GOP” like Reagan did is “in the box” thinking. When Ron was gone there they were with GHWB’s “New world order”, points of light, “yes, new taxes” “out of the loop” Progressive BS. Unless we have a new dynamic the very best we can dare to hope for is a brief respite based on the strength of a single leader. Erickson and GOPe are not the answer. Why bother with them. Let them stew in there own juices. I hear people talking about Conservative “Purists”, like being one is a bad thing. What we need now more than anything is conservative purity. Sarah Palin 2016.

RedState has a long anti-Palin history. Some may remember the flame wars at RedSate regarding Governor Palin.

  • $3838536

Always confuse Erik Erickson with Candy Crowley, because they resemble each other, and both are lamestream shills at Communist News Network.

  • daisy_mae

red state, aka red fake, officially removed from favorites.

“Surprised to see a site I have long supported and promoted, cast aspersions onto my character. We get enough of that from MSM.”

Nahhhhhhhh. You’re own string of idiotic tweets casts aspersions on your character. Twitchy merely broadcast it.

  • BillBissenas

Erickson should be ashamed. He cheapens and distorts conservatism by his misogynist behavior.

  • BillBissenas

The GOP lost women by 11 percent in the last election. Gee, you’d think they wouldn’t do stupid sh_t like this. That’s why I’m not a member of the Party of Stupid.

  • RememberSekhmet

If you think going third party is the BEST IDEA EVAR! and you think Erickson and RedState are wrong, dispute on the substance of the article. Don’t focus on a not-unflattering and not-derpy picture and go ERMAGHERD THURR URTURRKIN PERRLEERN!

    • BillBissenas

I’m not sure it’s even mostly about the picture. It’s also about their reaction. Some of the things they said could have come from HuffPo, Moveon or DailyKos.

      • RememberSekhmet

Exactly my point. Going on and on about a picture is ludicrous.

        • daeghrefn

Yeah, and the article itself is as fictitious as the pic. But pointing that out is ludicrous as well. It’s an old game, you see: “Sarah Palin is a dumb bimbo.” “No, she isn’t.” “Personality-cultist worshiper!!!!!!! You can’t take ANY criticism of your idol!!!”

          • RememberSekhmet

Look at a whole bunch of shamnesty-related articles in the conservosphere involving Rubio. Most use that drop-jawed deer-in-the-headlights photo. It’s much more unflattering, and entirely fair. We don’t hear from Rubio fanbois “TAKE THAT PICTURE DOWN!”

          • mike_in_kosovo

That’s because it’s a *real* picture and not photoshopped.

      • joshpainter

Exactly. The RedState boyz have read Saul Alinsky’s book, and they practice what they learned in its pages on… a conservative woman.

    • daeghrefn

“dispute on the substance of the article.”

The article is wrong. Palin never advocated third party. Next?

      • RememberSekhmet

So why focus on a PICTURE?

        • OutspokenRed

For me, it’s because the article title refers to Palin’s “third-party solution” just above a damn picture of her with SANTA CLAUS! Like they’re trying to imply her solution is not real, like Santa.

I dumped RedState long ago. When Erick went to CNN, the site changed. His seemingly true Conservatism was RINOish; his attitude demeaning and harsh. Many respect him, and the site, still. Not me.

I am, rather, surprised that it was @laborunionreport who used the fake picture, and didn’t take it down ASAP. His blogging on unions – as a reformed insider – are wonderful.

Tempest in a teapot. Revealing, but not important. Gov. Palin is a ROCK, and can handle this idiocy from the RedState boys. She fights like a girl!!

  • David Paitsel

Why does anyone still visit Red State? Aside from being immature jerks, as Howe and Erickson himself have repeatedly demonstrated, they routinely ban anyone who disagrees with them. Childish, intolerant, egotistical…sort of like mini-Obamas on the right. I stopped visiting their site years ago.

  • http://whenfallsthecoliseum.com/author/kwatson/ megapotamus

Wow. Redstate has become Little Green Footballs. Erick Erickson, you sure talk a good game but you are as bad as any of ’em.

  • Sue Lynn

Good bye RedState Your a waste of my time. Remember we have good true conservative sites to get real reporting. Your site owes Sarah Palin an apology and all women but you punks are just to proud.

  • Jaynie59

That last tweet from Ben Howe is priceless. My biggest complaint about so-called conservative bloggers and pundit is they can’t stop eating their own. It’s disgusting. And that includes Michelle Malkin and Jen Kuznicki who can’t help themselves from attacking Ann Coulter every chance they get. I commented at Kuznicki’s blog when she wrote a post calling Ann Coulter a coward. She banned me. Who’s the damn coward Jen?

    • http://rightcal.blogspot.com/ Calvin Freiburger

Yeah, Kuznicki is an embarrassment. I challenged her on Twitter about that post, and instead of responding she lied about me not being a conservative and not wanting the Tea Party to be involved in GOP primaries. Then she blocked me.

      • Finrod Felagund

Sounds familiar, more than one person has made the same silly charge against me in the comments to this article. It’s like the People’s Front of Judea excommunicating the Judean People’s Front.

    • joshpainter

Ann Coulter gave Reagan conservatives the finger when she began slobbering over moderates Mitt Romney and Chris Christie. That was about the same time that she began attacking conservatives, including Sarah Palin. Ironically, it was Coulter who wrote the blurb when Human Events named Palin “Conservative of the Year” in 2008.

Coulter is no longer a conservative. She is a Republican. There’s a big difference between the two. She would fit right in at RedState, but they already have their token woman writing on the front page.

      • Stephen L. Hall

I always considered Ann Coulter to be more of an anti-liberal than a conservative. Which means that sometimes she’s right on point and very astute, sometimes she misses the mark. Her critiques of liberals have great merit, but like many people she thinks that you can win the middle away from the left by meeting them half way. I don’t believe that works.

        • Jaynie59

Ann Coulter is a conservative but she’s from Connecticut. When you’re surrounded by liberals you are right that we’re more anti-liberal than anything else. But Ann Coulter has always had a soft spot for Republicans who win in blue states. She wants to win. I agree with you that she’s wrong about that. But to call her a coward was beyond the pale yet conservatives do that type of thing to each other all the time and I’m so sick of it. I won’t defend her Palin bashing but she’s no coward.

          • Stephen L. Hall

Let’s be clear on this point, I did not call her that.

          • Finrod Felagund

Sadly, you’re not the only one being accused of things they didn’t say, so I can commiserate.

          • Jaynie59

Jen Kuzinki did and when I challenged her on her blog she banned me. You can argue with Ann over many things but being a coward isn’t one of them. It was a low blow and typical of how conservatives, especially conservative women, go out of their way to attack each other. I’m sick of it.

      • http://rightcal.blogspot.com/ Calvin Freiburger

I was extremely frustrated with her stubborn Christie support, but she’s finally seen the light. And honestly, she made a perfectly defensible case for Romney. You can disagree with it, but I don’t see how you could deny she was basing that decision on sincere conservative criteria: http://www.anncoulter.com/columns/2011-12-28.html

Plus, right now she’s probably the strongest voice on the Right for arguing against the GOP’s amnesty sellout. She hasn’t pulled any punches about how Rubio, Ryan, Paul, and the GOP establishment are leading us to the slaughter on the issue.

      • Finrod Felagund

I like to think of Ann Coulter as the court jester of conservatism. Her purpose is to distract the Left and get them to waste time attacking her instead of doing anything useful.

  • Hiraghm

My heart aches to see Ms Malkin waste her gravitas standing up for Sarah Palin.

Tell me, was this video photoshopped? – http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rSdFIDygFwM&html5=1
It’s from a beauty contest former governor Palin was in, and reveals far more than the RS photo. Some would say it’s even more demeaning to conservative women.

    • Stephen L. Hall

Are you saying that conservative women are not permitted to show any skin? Then what is the point in having beautiful conservative women. The demeaning part is faking photographs for the obvious purpose of discounting their opinions. A conservative woman in a bikini in a beauty contest articulating valid opinions would not be demeaning. Pasting one woman’s face on another woman’s body sitting on Santa’s lap . . . ask yourself why.

      • Hiraghm

I didn’t know there was a “point” to having beautiful conservative women. Ms Malkin is a beautiful conservative woman, I haven’t seen her video where she’s parading around on stage in a bathing suit.

As I’ve said before, had they not said so, I wouldn’t have known it was photoshopped.

is this demeaning? Would it be demeaning if it turned out that the head and body in the photo were not both iJustine?

So, no, I don’t see the faux outrage as being valid.

      • Hiraghm

  • http://rightcal.blogspot.com/ Calvin Freiburger

It’s encouraging to see more people notice that RedState is run by unprofessional, juvenile hacks who can’t take responsibility or criticism. I’m not as big a Palin fan as some conservatives, but I appreciate that she’s doing the right thing on amnesty and being honest about its dire stakes. Right now she’s doing a heckuva lot more for conservatism than Erick “Perry and Sanford Shill” Erickson. RS also needs to be called out for the jackboot routine their comment “moderators” love so much.

    • joshpainter

Are you another ex-RS front pager? Our numbers seem to be growing.

      • http://rightcal.blogspot.com/ Calvin Freiburger

I had a user diary for a while, until Bill S and Neil Stevens banned me for noticing they were jackboots. Moe Lane was threatening another commenter who wasn’t showing Rick Perry the proper groveling, so I asked him what posting rules the commenter had violated. Lane just told me to shut up, and when I questioned *that* they banned me for “repeated refusal to follow instructions” and — incredibly — “just decid[ing] to act like a jackass.”

  • Timothy Hadley

“cast aspersions”–WTH does that mean? How about speaking 21st-century English?

  • BenInNY

It’s really too bad, I like Ben and a lot of the other people at RS, but when I began noticing the amount of concern trolling on the site in the articles themselves I just couldn’t take it anymore. Think I stopped visiting before he was contributing there. I got the impression RS was becoming more concerned with click numbers via outrage generated by headlines than the content and underlying message. Later I read a post on another site describing certain writers laughing at member’s disgust. Who knows if that’s actually true, but it felt correct in hindsight.

  • Renny

I love that Sarah Palin scares them so much.

    • Sentinel34

And then some. She challenges them on a playing field that they don’t know how to compete. The only way they know how to compete is to demean and minimalize her.

Okay, look, I don’t care how super awesome RedState as a site is, I don’t care how many morons post pro-Palin content on the site, and I don’t care if Erick son of Erick posted a pro Palin article shortly after this debacle. What I do care about is that Ben Howe, this stupid piece of crap, completely overreacted and acted like a damn fool when it was proven that the picture was a fake. That’s pretty much all I care about, and for that reason, I am no longer visiting the RINO nest that is RedState.

Anybody defending RedState is defending Ben Howe and his disgusting insults. You are essentially saying that you agree with him that Palin fans are cultists and whatever. You know who you are.

  • MikeTX62

On one hand, it’s obvious that @EWErickson and @BenHowe are petulant little children who don’t like admitting when they’ve erred, even when caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

On the other hand, as a Palin fan I must admit that (photoshopped or not) I thought the picture of Gov Palin was flattering. Of course, I’m a guy so my perspective is different.

  • tenndoug911

What does he mean cast aspersions on his character he has no character.

  • Harold Ancell

Red State is by far the most intolerant site on the Right that I’ve tried to participate in. If you don’t toe the party line, in my case whether “Network Neutrality” was a real issue (not about whether the FCC et. al. would likely make it worse, which is what discuss with those on the left), you get accused of being a troll, shill or worse, if you’re lucky enough not to be banned. (In fact, I’ve never come across a site on the Right that’s even close to that.)

I stopped following it entirely when they changed the format to a much less useful one; cynics said that was because too many contributor items were getting more attention that top dog’s Erick Erickson’s.

    • RUexperienced

I have posted on conservative sites for more than a decade. The two most intolerant web sites are both dedicated to Sarah Palin. One is C4P. But it is understandable that a Palin site will only tolerate pro Palin comments.

The other web site is Free Republic, run by Jim Robinson. They have had so many purges of long time posters who are true blue conservatives, the only people left are birthers and Palinbots.

      • Finrod Felagund

Yeah, I tried reading Free Republic once but gave it up a long time ago. Sounds like it hasn’t changed much.

        • RUexperienced

It has gotten worse with each election. In 2008 all Guiliani supporters were banned. Jim Robinson endorsed Mike Huckabee.

In 2012, anyone who endorsed Romney was banned, even though JR finally endorsed Romney in the last weeks.

Every elected official is now a RINO…… Governors Rick Scott, Jan Brewer, Scott Walker…… Tea Party Senators Rubio, Rand Paul and Jeff Flake are RINOs.

All the banning have caused a mental in breeding, with each person feeding off the ignorance of the next in the race to the bottom.

Is it is the person who posted the diary who added the photo? There is another post on the site now supporting Palin’s call for a third party. And we wonder why our party gets no where fast ~ I’m sick of the freakin’ infighting. And I’m sick of certain cliques calling others of the party names just because they don’t happen to have the same sense of humor. We need to be the party that is ABOVE REPROACH. And it’s sad that someone who does so much for candidates and our entire party (Gov. Palin) gets criticized and demeaned from even the “conservatives”. Let’s stop it. And unify and go after THE LEFT, and the RINO’s, who are benefiting from all of this. Maybe then we’ll actually be viable as a party.

    • RUexperienced

Palin has done her share of criticizing and demeaning conservatives.

Sarah Palin called Rick Santorum ‘a knuckle dragging Neanderthal.’

Palin blasted Rick Perry as a “crony capitalist.’

Sarah Palin belittled the candidacy of “Herb” Cain as “the flavor of the month.”

She called Newt Gingrich “an egotistical narrowminded machine goon.”

Now Rubio and Ayotte are “flip floppers.”

If Sarah Palin wants civility in the Republican Party and the conservative movement, she should start practicing it herself.

      • Exodus2011

actually RU – Sarah Palin said she would allow Mrs Santorum to call out Rick for being a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal (rather cleverly put indeed **__**)

Sarah Palin, when asked about Rick Perry’s ties to his Donors, maintained a consistent stand that Crony Capitalism must END

The context of the ‘flavor’ comment makes clear that it was the GOPe and their switching back and forth, which was meant, not Cain per se

Indeed Rubio and Ayotte *are* ~> FLIP-FLOPPERS. When asked about these two specifically, she said, ‘yes’ when they were campaigning to get elected in 2010, they both included strong statements against amnesty, or against amnesty without meaningful border security *first*.

Thus they have betrayed the trust of those who voted for them

Gov Sarah Palin KNOWS this because she had them vetted fully before endorsing them … Gov Sarah Palin ALSO feels betrayed … LIKE WE DO

Gov Sarah Palin does not BULLSCHMIDT or NUANCE when politicians betray the trust of their voters

that is why more and more Conservatives are on board with her, and with Cruz

but you RU, and the racketeering GOPe Consultancy Class don’t like it …. the rise of Palin and Cruz means the end to the America-Killing DC Status Quo (from which you, no doubt, derive your income)

        so sad, too bad …

        #BeClingers —————-> #AmericaRISING

        • RUexperienced

Actually, I am a fan of Ted Cruz. I just hope he doesn’t end up like Palin.

          • Exodus2011

Take your blinders off then, because Ted Cruz supports Gov Sarah Palin, boldly, loudly, consistently and PUBLICLY

therefore you shouldn’t be supporting him, because his judgement must be ‘very poor’ in your eyes

            right RU?

perhaps you conveniently overlook that though, if you see a chance to be employed by him in the future

sorry doll …. he DOES have good judgment, and an American who CANNOT SEE THE COLOSSAL VALUE in this WARRIOR for America, Gov Sarah Palin, would never get a place on his team

go and work for the RINOs with BIG DOLLARS Ru

Jeb or Romney … persuade that putz to have another run … he has huge dollars that you can milk off him again

            #BeClingers —————> #AmericaRISING

          • RUexperienced

Cruz got a crucial and timely endorsement from Sarah Palin. He has paid her back with a very nice shout-out or two.

          • Exodus2011

            nah RU

you are so entrenched in the CORRUPT DC Status Quo, that you think *every* politician is the same …

and you would be RIGHT under usual circumstances

but these are UNUSUAL times … Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz do not fit the mold

they will stand on principle even if they stand ALONE

they are very much alike, VERY MUCH ALIKE

when Ted Cruz (The Keynote Speaker!) took the stage UNSCHEDULED before Sarah Palin spoke at CPAC (and that was AFTER the ‘arranged person’ had introduced her) he gave more than a ‘shoutout or 2’

Palin, Cruz & Demint will lead Constitutional America back in2 the Promised Land, taking out first the RINO & then the Lefty Giants #victory

we know Sarah Palin is NOT4SALE (a primary reason you and the other members of racketeering GOPe Consultancy class oppose her ) and I would be most surprised if Ted Cruz is not in the same category

give up on Ted RU – I don’t think you will find it easy to milk $ from a run by him … try Rand

he appears to be 4SALE … is obviously dealing with McConnell … he’s more like the Leaders you are used to

Doesn’t this quote remind you of the status quo of our Palinista armies?

“All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”—Victor Hugo

My pastor used this quote this very morning to crack open today’s Gospel reading of Lk 10:1-9:

    ——————————–

…At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others
whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit.

    He said to them,

    “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.

    Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
    Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;
and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say,
    ‘Peace to this household.’
If a peaceful person lives there,
    your peace will rest on him;
but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you,
for the laborer deserves his payment.

Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,
eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them,

‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you…”
