Lady Gaga has tear in hip labrum, cancels all remaining tour dates

Heartache. Lady Gaga is canceling her Born This Way Ball after being diagnosed with a labral tear in her right hip:

Live Nation Global Touring has confirmed that the remainder of theLady Gaga Born This Way Ball performances have been cancelled. After additional tests this morning to review the severity of the issue, it has been determined that Lady Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip caused by strenuous repetitive movements in her performances. She will need surgery to repair the problem, followed by strict down time to recover. This unfortunately, will force her to cancel the tour, so she can heal. Refunds for the cancelled performances will be available at point of purchase starting Feb 14, 2013. (Source: LittleMonsters.)

Labral tears are often caused by a condition called femoacetabular impingement (FAI) — basically, the head of the femur does not fit correctly in the hip socket, causing the femur’s head to rub against the labrum.

This video shows what the problem probably is, and how it will likely be fixed:

FAI may be congenital, so there’s a good chance Gaga was born this way.

Her fans, known as Little Monsters, are devastated, and a few of them are playing fast and loose with the facts:

She didn’t break her hip and won’t need a hip replacement.

Best of all, labral tears can be fixed. Sprinter Tyson Gay finished 4th in the Olympic 100 meters last summer just one year after he underwent labral repair surgery.

Our guess is that Gaga will be treated by Marc Philippon, a Vail, Colo., surgeon who has been called “hip doctor of the stars.

In addition to Gay, Philippon performed surgery on baseball player Alex Rodriguez and golfer Greg Norman.

We wish Gaga a speedy recovery.
