Salon contributor Mary Elizabeth Williams is honest enough to acknowledge the biological fact that life begins at conception.

She concludes, though, that the unborn child’s life is “a life worth sacrificing”:

[W]e make choices about life all the time in our country. We make them about men and women in other countries. We make them about prisoners in our penal system. We make them about patients with terminal illnesses and accident victims. We still have passionate debates about the justifications of our actions as a society, but we don’t have to do it while being bullied around by the vague idea that if you say we’re talking about human life, then the jig is up, rights-wise.

So: Because we go to war, execute convicted murderers, and remove brain-dead accident victims from life support, snuffing out innocent human life is OK.

Can anyone still doubt that Rush Limbaugh was right?

These people really are pro-abortion, not pro-choice.

  • Stupid Republic

Not to invoke Godwin’s Law, but this reeks of Lebensunwertes Leben, or “life unworthy of life” in a certain totalitarian regime in 1939.

    • shimauma

Well, said, little adolf though certain lives weren’t worthwhile either, but these lefturds still refuse to acknowledge their nazi lean.

      • gensec

Before you get carried away likening pro-choice to Hitler, you should check what Hitler actually believed about abortion. Like the absolutist pro-lifers here (not including many pro-lifers, e.g. who want to ban late term abortions), Hitler considered abortion murder.

Anyone that says “Abortion = murder”? That means you agree with Hitler.

Hitler was definitely not pro-choice! e.g. see German History in Documents and Images:

“As of 1943, performing an illegal abortion could lead to the death penalty.”

and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:

“Nazi population policy concentrated on the family and marriage … bestowed the Cross of Honor of the German Mother on women bearing four or more babies, and increased punishments for abortion.”

Hitler prohibited abortion for all Germans except for Jews etc, groups he would kill after birth. What American pro-choicer wants to prohibit abortions for whites?

        • shimauma

unlike hitler, you need to understand, pro LIFE means EVERYBODY! Margaret Sanger, the mother of planned parenthood, wanted all the black children aborted, she was into the same eugenics spiel as hitler. Remember when you support pro choice, you support murder.

          • gensec

You sure don’t let facts get in the way of your talking points.

You’re flat wrong about Margaret Sanger’s abortion view. Unlike today’s Planned Parenthood, Sanger (a lowlife racist eugenicist) opposed abortion. Can’t you bother to look anything up, before spewing idiocy like Sanger “wanted all the black children aborted”?

            From Sanger’s autobiography:
“To each group we explained what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way—no matter how early it was performed it was taking life; that contraception was the better way, the safer way—it took a little time, a little trouble, but was well worth while in the long run, because life had not yet begun.”

OK, so pro-lifers have got both racists Sanger and Hitler opposing abortion. How about you try arguing your case on the actual facts and merits, instead of falsely claiming that Hitler or Sanger were pro-choice.

When you argue your case with totally false claims, it leads to a reasonable suspicion that’s because you don’t have any better argument for your position.

          • shimauma

How about another comment Sanger made:

            In Her Own Words

“The most merciful thing that a large family
does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”
            Margaret Sanger, Women
            and the New Race
            (Eugenics Publ. Co., 1920, 1923)

            On sterilization & racial purification:
Sanger believed that, for the purpose of racial “purification,” couples should be rewarded who chose sterilization. Birth Control in America, The Career of Margaret Sanger,
by David Kennedy, p. 117, quoting a 1923 Sanger speech.

            On the extermination of blacks:
“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population,” she said, “if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right: A Social
History of Birth Control in America, by Linda Gordon.

Everything you quote supports my statement that Margaret Sanger was a “lowlife racist” And opposite to what you claimed when you brought her into the discussion, that lowlife racist is on your side opposing abortion.

Here’s another denunciation of abortion from racist Sanger (which you’ll want to ignore, like the one in my previous reply):
“I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization.”

  • PennyRobinsonFanClub

Wow, just wow. But ya know what I notice? I’ve mentioned this a couple of times in the last week or so. This is the latest leftist debating tactic, from her as well as from our resident Media Matters nickel-a-word trolls. They =start out= conceding a key point of the argument, then try to water it down so it seems like it isn’t a key point at all. Right here — yes, it’s a human life but we kill human lives all the time, so what: attempting to blur the distinction between an in utero baby, an enemy soldier, and a convicted murderer.

Someone else here did a similar thing, conceding that maybe President Sock Puppet was maybe not the shiniest gem of the family jewels after all, but that we haven’t had a “really” smart president since Jefferson, anyway.

Don’t let them get away with it, hold their feet to the fire, and demonstrate that they’re all working off of the same style sheet.

The difference between Conservatives and liberals: Conservatives believe
that we can kill our neighbors only when our neighbors are trying to kill us,

It’s interesting that people feel open enough to verbalize what and who they are. Mary Elizabeth Williams labels pro-lifers as those who want to “control” reproduction, while stating that she, as a mother, has the ultimate right to interfere with nature taking its course- i.e. controlling reproduction. I feel bad for her kids having to go through life knowing that if the timing of their arrival was inconvenient for her, she would have taken them out and celebrated it.

    • ollieve

Those with penises have no business commenting. Unless you are supporting a woman and her baby through at least 22 years of the life of that baby of whom she could not afford to raise then please keep your thoughts to yourself.

      • madian_kikyou

I don’t have a penis so I have plenty to say about this and your statement fails on all accounts. As a fellow human with lady parts I think you’re an idiot.

  • sqeptiq

An embryo is human life but you can easily draw a distinction between human life and a human being. It’s pretty absurd to call early embryos that haven’t developed brains human beings. And the idea that the morning after pill murders a person is bonkers and superstition, usually motivated by religion. Now when it comes to second and third trimester abortions, most people accept that there should be legal limits there.

    • NCRelite

U can’t argue the science. Life is life. Most guys support abortion so they can bang chicks without consequences

      • Raye09

Many guys in my age range(18-24) support abortion, mainly because they do not want to pay child support or buy diapers. Most users on this site probably already know this attitude is prevalent on college campuses, with pro life female students being accused of being “goldiggers out to trap a man”.

    • WisconsinPatriot

Abortion has become a pagan ritual. True believers are now celebrating the death they inflict. Life is life, and to take it is wrong.

      • shimauma

Makes sense now why that abortion doctor in a Philly planned parenthood was keeping little baby feet in the freezer. He was going to make “lucky charms” out of them.

    • rivers

Regardless of what you call it, it’s a bloody, violent act that ends a force of life. Religion need not figure into the equation at all. If you abhor violence, you must abhor this act. If you do not think 55 million abortions has had an extremely deleterious “butterfly” effect on our culture, you’re kidding yourself.

  • Randi Starr

      • Randi Starr

Hmmmm.Someone may find her an inconvenience before then, so I guess elimination would be in order.

  • Teresa Davis McCormick

Is anyone really surprised about how these jerks at Salon think? What’s surprising is that they are moronic enough to admit it.

  • BobTheUmp

Camille Paglia made this argument years ago in Salon as well.

It has been the supporting philosophy of abortion rights from the beginning. Sanger made no bones about it and neither does any honest Atheist/Statist. This perspective makes it possible to tell your kid what to eat and that if he wants a student loan he/she has to become a nurse to support universal healthcare. If you can kill a baby for the good of the state it is nothing to kill off the future you planned for yourself or your kids for the good of the state.

  • Netmilsmom

    This article terrifies me.

  • itzyaboi95

So, libs have no issue when they mindlessly endorse the destruction of innocent life, but get pissed when you bring up the death penalty or a similar topic. Ignorance is at its highest.

  • ollieve

So how many of the people commenting here have supported a woman and her baby financially until after college and they get a good job, or until after the kid comes back home to live because their Bachelors or Masters degree can only get them a job at Home Depot? How many of you have adopted the babies that women cannot afford to raise or the babies that would be raised in an abusive environment? Passing out a month’s worth of diapers and baby food ain’t gonna cut it people. Time to put your money where your mouths are.
