Marshall, founder of Talking Points Memo, elaborates:

It is true that not a few Hispanic voters support reasonable limits on immigration, oppose affirmative action, and even dissent from the multicultural orthodoxy on bilingual education. But the electoral punch of these GOP wedge issues is not really rooted in disagreements about the economic utility of open immigration or the relative efficacy of bilingual education. It’s driven by voters who resent the increasing prominence of Hispanics in American public life.

Got that? If you are a white Republican who supports reasonable limits on immigration, opposes affirmative action, and has concerns about bilingual education you take those positions not in good faith but because you “resent the increasing prominence of Hispanics in American public life.”

      Funny story. About 5 years ago I was riding a greyhound bus from Orland to Tampa to visit a friend. As I always do on public transportation, I sat alone in the corner with my (audibly) loud headphones on, concentrating on my laptop with the very specific goal of deterring chatty strangers from bothering me. A black guy turns around in his seat and starts bothering me anyway, even though I kept my eyes glued to the screen and pretended I could not hear or see him for a good 10 minutes. He kept psst-ing and calling me “tattoo”, asking asinine questions like “what I’ve got there”, referring to my laptop. I finally took my headphones off and told him I’m obviously busy and not interested in talking, please leave me alone. He persisted and I ignored him. 3 days later I was leaving a karaoke bar with my friend at 2 am, walking home to his apartment a few blocks away. Lo and behold, here comes the black guy from the bus with a friend on bikes in the middle of the night on the very same block, of all the places to be in the entire city of Tampa. They stopped and walked along with us, harassing us every step of the way, calling me racist, alluding to the possession of a gun, racist racist racist, you didn’t want to talk to me cause you racist! I told him, You know, I wasn’t racist on the bus but you’re starting to change my mind. Finally he reached under his oversized shirt as if reaching for a weapon and that’s when I whipped out my phone and called 911. They ran like the wind, and I was beyond relieved. That was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. These people are so brainwashed by the left into believing that everyone is racist that they’re doing the kind of things that give people cause to truly resent them, but not for the reason they think. Assuming I must be racist because I’m white is the epitome of racism. Round and round we go.

      I’m glad I don’t live in California on many levels, but If our granddaughter came home from school and starting telling my wife that she learned in school, that a woman once wrote a poem that effected lots of people, and this woman was special and she lived with another woman like Grandpa lives with Grandma … fortunately, there is a fire/rescue station just around the corner from us.

      In retrospect, if they are obsessed with race, then being obsessed with other equally irrelevant ways to keep us at each other makes as much sense as anything else.

    I am a female American of Mexican descent. My parents were both born here. My brothers and sisters were all born here. We were all educated in the days of “sink or swim” and still managed to turn out bilingual. All of us graduated from High School; some of us even have college degrees. My dad fought in WWII, I lost a brother in Vietnam (he volunteered to go rather than wait for the draft) and I have had various cousins who have served (and some of whom died) in the military throughout the year.

    Yet you insist that because my skin is brown I must vote Democrat. Why? Because the Republicans hate people like me and you have my best interests at heart? Male bovine excrement. I haven’t voted Democrat since you loony radicals took over my party. This is no longer the party of JFK and LBJ. In fact, you can thank the loony radicals who rioted at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago for the fact that we got Richard Nixon instead of LBJ for a second term.

    Congratulations, though! Thanks to people like you and the so-called progressive media, you have managed to portray all of us Hispanics as non-citizens who come into this country looking for a better life.     OK, I’m from Tennessee…I’m a caucasian…almost all of my folks still live there…I know the south. I voted for Obama, yes, but as much, I voted against what Romney and Ryan represent. As an aside, I once voted for George Romney–a real conservative– for governor of Michigan.

    I’ve been around long enough to have seen the start of the “southern strategy” and witness the broadening o that effort through various Republican race-bating tactics in numerous elections over the past 40 years. Not all conservatives are racist. As a matter of fact, most real conservatives are not racist. But I’ll tell you who is: Vast numbers in the so-called “red” states, those who vote solidly for Republican candidates, scream about Obama’s socialism, and collect far more from government programs than they contribute to pay for those programs. All of you smart , rationale conservatives–and there are a lot of you–should reign in these others who like to mouth conservatism without having the slightest idea what it means and who are, I assure you. very much racists.

      That’s not necessary or realistic. There are racist conservatives just like there are racist liberals. There are racist gays, racist communists, racist Christians, racist Jews, racist atheists, racist doctors, racist janitors. It’s human nature to distrust people outside your tribe. There is absolutely no reason for Republicans to take responsibility for them. The day Democrats admit racism exists everywhere, including within their own party, is the day Republicans can agree that conservatives and liberals should be voting for small or big government, not white or brown leaders.

However, here’s your contention: “There is absolutely no reason for Republicans to take responsibility for them [racists].” Beginning with Nixon and Goldwater’s decisions to appeal to southern voters with “states’ rights” messages, gaining Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, and using countless political campaigns where Republicans exploited racial tensions, the Republican Party systematically created a solid voting block among southern white voters. Thus, when strategy becomes policy, you own that effort. That’s the difference between random occurrences of racism in all groups and racism that’s integrated into a group as a agreed upon trait of that group. When Democrats supported the civil rights movement in the 60s, southern whites turned against the party and Republicans exploited that opposition. Finally, consider these statements from two important Republicans: 1. A 2005 quote from Ken Mehlman, G. Bush’s campaign chairman and Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair when he admitted that Republicans have “benefit[]ed politically from racial polarization.” And announced that “I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong.” 2. A 1981 quote from Lee Atwater, once RNC Chair and campaign manager for G.H.W. Bush: Because politicians can’t use racial slurs, they “say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.” Even if most Republicans have disavowed such strategies, which I don’t think is the case, most white citizens in the south still conform to those beliefs.

          “Some possibility that racists exist in all groups”? How about 100% guarantee that they exist no matter their political affiliation. Blacks who think whites are racist simply for being white, whites who hate other whites, whites and blacks who hate blacks, latinos, whites and everyone else who doesn’t agree with them. Blacks who call other blacks “house negros” because they didn’t believe the liberal lie and became successful. If that’s not your idea of racism then that’s the problem right there: Your perception is skewed. And that’s about all I have to say. You voted for Obama. You’re not looking out for the best interest of the republican party.

    I have never felt the need to say this here before, because it’s personal, but this charge must be answered. I am so sick to death of this charge. When my (now ex) husband and I adopted our son more than 20 years ago, we (both white) didn’t seek or expect a biracial (black/white) baby, but that’s what we got. We asked all our friends and family if they would have any problems with it, because we wanted to be sure we were doing the right thing for him. Not one person objected. Everyone was thrilled for us. Since then, I can count on one hand the racially insensitive comments I have heard. Big whoop. And more important to this discussion, in the same 20 plus years that I’ve been listening to conservative talk radio, I can say that the racially insensitive remarks in the “national conversation” are equally rare.

    Meanwhile, the blatant racism endured by black conservatives by “tolerant” liberals is breathtaking. Not to mention the crass racial warfare that has been encouraged by this president and his Messengers (MSM). Any disagreement was automatically slapped racist in some influential quarters and BHO did NOTHING to stop it.

    So Mr. Marshall, take your charge and stuff it.
