Hot on the heels of her mean-spirited mockery of National Coming Out Day, Coulter used the word “retard” tonight to describe the President of the United States. It isn’t the first time Coulter has used that thoughtless, barrel-scraping insult:

We know her books don’t sell like they used to, but there must be a better way to gin up controversy.

She sure doesn’t speak for us.

Update:

Coulter doubles down with another tweet using “retarded” to insult Obama.

  • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Um yeah um like really outta line there, Annie, cuz the Democrats have been so obsequious, polite, and respectful to Mitt “Magic Underwear” Romney, who terrorizes dogs and keeps a harem in a binder or something.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/Q2TDFHN3TMLU7PE5TSQDW57V7U Texasconservative

Oh yeah, I would much rather be on a dinner plate of barry’s than riding on mitt’s car. Can ya’ll get something better PLEASE??? And no binders, birth control, abortions or big bird, just something intelligent. Thanks.

    • Kitt

Maybe she’d been playing an Obama/lies debate drinking game? That could lead to some weird tweets. If his mouth is open, he’s usually lying.

  • Love of Country

    DOH!

Not too cute, Ann …. did you consider the feelings of Sarah Palin and others?
Some truths are better left unsaid, at least on TV where you represent all of us.

    • Judith Lewis

Ann does NOT represent anyone but herself. She is not a public servant. Her job is to make people see the light by using words and she does a darn good job at it. I love her books and wouldn’t change a thing about her. Why should conservatives have to be goody two shoes while the left gets to say anything they want while they make us watch our words. I reserve the right to exercise my constitutional right to use the words of my choice, no matter how offensive they are and I grant you the same. If you are offended, cover your ears and turn off the computer.

      • CLASYS

I agree we have grown up with the words mentally retarded. Anything after that is PC hijacked to drop the distinction. Since when is it not allowed to use retard when mentally in front of it was not used? Are engines mentally handicapped? Are sparks that are retarded mentally handicapped? You are all so stupid that you have allowed the left to redefine the modern american usage of the english language to neuter your ability to fight back, and for that YOU are the retards!

        • Judith Lewis

I’m confused. Are you for me or against me?

          • Love of Country

Michelle Malkin and Sarah Palin aren’t with you nor would they ever be …. hmmmmn.

Public figures calling people retards is reprehensible.
Now go turn on HBO … Bill Maher is on.

        • Judith Lewis

I’m not sure why you sent me this because I think we agree. I agree that we should absolutely be able to get down and dirty with the left bomb throwers. When did the right relinquish its right to fight back against the left? For some reason people are thinking that the left has freedom of speech but the right doesn’t.
The word retard is just a word with many meanings and I reserve the right to use it. And when was it decided that a few people have the power to tell the rest of us what words we are allowed to use? Those people may just be smarter than we thought because a lot of people on the right are falling for it and joining in. Is it because we’ve lost our understanding of the First Amendment? Are we so eager to give up our freedoms for the sake of just getting along?
I have been viciously attacked for what I said on Twitchy. The very people who profess to be good conservatives are the angriest and the most vile. Is political correctness fated to be the new law of the land? I refuse to take part in it. Next they’ll start arresting people in the middle of the night for making youtube films.
I try really hard not to get angry when posting on the internet but sometimes I think there are people out there who are trying to goad and agitate, present company excepted.
I hope I’ve made myself clear without being offensive.

      • Love of Country

Why are you on Michelle Malkin’s website if you think she should cover her ears and turn off her computer? She, like other people who have something called empathy, are very disappointed by what Ann said publicly.

Thank God not a lot of trolls like you are in the GOP and on TV calling people retards all the time …. I can’t imagine such insensitive debauchery. No one would want to join the GOP if our representatives called people retards all the time because that word is hurtful and insensitive and so many other words are at one’s disposal …. you won’t hear Charles Krauthammer calling people retards, for example … too much class and empathy.

Ann is a public figure and like I said …. what Ann said wasn’t cute and if you think it is then you must be a fan of Bill Maher. People who are mentally handicapped cannot change their situation, okay? Fatsos can lose weight, stupid people can get educated and illegal aliens can turn around and leave the country but people with Down’s Syndrome are that way for life. And time and time again they have said that hearing the word retarded hurts their feelings, not that you would care in the least bit.

I’ve liked Ann for a dozen years but realize she is not perfect …. it’s sad the way you go after people who don’t give a full throated endorsement of every controversial thing she’s ever said like some creepy, mindless sychophant.

        • Judith Lewis

Dear Love of Country, interesting name considering you don’t have love for our most treasured and important right, freedom of speech. I hope you rid yourself of all that invective by taking it out on someone you know absolutely nothing about. If,as you say, you’re a conservative you would fight to the death my right to say whatever I want. I would do that for you. For the sake of the discussion, I am a strong conservative and have been all my life. I believe that the speech police belong to the liberal/socialists/fascists who would seek to destroy our right to express our thoughts with whatever words we wish to use. By stripping us of the right to speak our minds the next step would be the thought police and jail and re-education camps or concentration camps. I, for one, refuse to tolerate anyone being ostracized for their choice of words. My point is if you can’t tolerate strong ideas and/or words then you should not participate in social websites because your feelings will be constantly hurt and you will be forever offended. It is not the job of anyone to tell someone else what the can or cannot say. Twitchy is a pretty rough and tumble place. It is not a place for people who are easily offended. This is a place for people to air their opinions and let the chips fall where they may. If any of the ideas expressed here prove to hurt your feelings to the point you want to shut someone up then perhaps you need to find a nice liberal pc site where every body speaks kindly and no one would dare have an unkind thought. Perhaps you are not a conservative at all but a closet liberal. Maybe you need to reassess your political ideology.

Ann Coulter has as much right to use any word she likes as does Bill Mahr, as much as I despise his choices as well as his opinions but this is America and we stand for the free and open exchange of ideas. We do not ban certain words because they may or may not offend someone. The word “retard” is a perfectly innocent word. Look it up in the dictionary. It has many meanings. I would never call a handicapped person a retard, not many people would. If you go to the other thread on this subject, the first entry pretty well sums it up.

We as a people are going to have to lighten up and remember what our principles are. Are we going to start jailing people because they say something we don ‘t like or take a stand that we don’t agree with? Next we’ll be burning witches again. Please don’t fall into the liberal mindset of speech regulation. You’re just giving in to their narrow- minded thinking.

You also gave yourself away when you called me an idiot. Look that word up, too, while you’re at it. Those who live by the sword die by the sword.

          • Love of Country

Hey kid …. I said her choice of words wasn’t too cute …. and for that you get on your hollow soapbox about me somehow shutting down freedom of speech? Are you kidding me? Your strawman obsession is way, way, way over the top. I can’t stand disingenuous, misguided, hypocritical, sychophant drama queens like you … unbelievable!!!!!!!!

          • Judith Lewis

You’re a creep and a troll, and I mean that in the worst way! Stop telling me to leave. YOU leave! I doubt that Michelle Malkin was disgusted, as you say. She is another of my favorite outspoken writer/commentators. She is not at all shy about calling a spade a spade, so stop assigning emotions to her that she has not articulated.

          • Love of Country

She said she was disgusted as did all her staff and moderators. She did articulate it.

          • Judith Lewis

Who died and made you the conscience of the world. You are no conservative and we both know it. I am as entitled to my opinion as you are. If you don’t like what I have to say, then stop stalking me or you’ll make me think you are what we’ve been talking about. I have no problem with discussing differences in a civilized manner but you obviously are incapable of civil discourse. You either need to go take a nap and calm down or take a tranquilizer and run around the block. You are taking the discussion way too seriously and telling me to leave is just plain juvenile. I am most certainly not a bully but I can’t say the same about you.

          • Love of Country

You’ve been dead wrong at every turn and you hate me for pointing it out …. end of story.

Every argument you make against me is a strawman cause otherwise you lose, every time.

You’re a silly little girl and argue like one …. way too small to admit any wrong doing.

            1) You started this whole thing ….. you should have never come after and chided me just for saying what Ann said wasn’t too cute. It isn’t cute and 99% of all respectable people in this country would side with me, not you. Okay? So I won that point.

            2) No one died and made me the conscience of the world …. how dramatic can you be? I stated a well founded opinion backed up by Malkin, Palin, and most everyone else who is respectable. Save your ridiculous strawmen for Halloween. Again, I won that point.

            3) Stop stalking you? Look drama queen, you started this and it’s been back and forth ever since. You’re desperate to feign the upper hand but I see right thru it w/ my superior intelligence. Again, I won that point.

            4) I’m incapable of civil discourse? I’ve been spot on in everything I’ve said. You called me names for saying something Ann said wasn’t cute ie calling people retards …. it is you who was out of line. Again, I won that point.

            5) Stop telling you to leave? Knock off the drama and strawmen, Good Lord! I asked why are you on Michelle’s website if you think she’s so out of line and trying to shut down free speech, because that’s how you came down on me for being even less critical of Ann than Michelle is. That is not telling you to leave, that’s you being overly dramatic again and playing the victim/strawman card …. pathetic ….. Again, I won that point.

            6) I’m taking this too seriously? How is that? I’m defending myself from your misguided and baseless claims and you keep dissembling and making up strawman arguments. You’re stuck on stupid, pardon the expression. Too small to admit when you’re wrong …. I have been right about everything including the fact about what started your misguided nagging when I said Ann wasn’t too cute. Again, I won that point.

            7) I’m not a conservative? That’s rich coming from someone who will make up anything and use any strawman to try and feign the upper hand in a disagreement …. you’re terribly disingenuous and think it’s cute to call people retards …. Bill Maher, is that you?

            8) I need to take a tranquiler? For what and why? So you can continue on in ignorance about Michelle Malkin’s and Sarah Palin’s views …. because they’re the same as mine and not yours?
You told me to stop assigning emotions to Michelle Malkin because you are desperate to come off as being in her good graces instead of me being in their good graces …. so I showed you Michelle’s tweets where she said Ann was stupid and shallow for using the word “retard” and in those two tweets she absolutely destroyed your whole reason for arguing with me in the first place. Again, I won that point.

            9) So you see Judith, you’ve been all over the road with your drama and strawmen and baseless accusations and if you’ve proven anything (ANYTHING), it’s that you’re small, petty, too small to grow, too small to admit defeat and too small to apologize for making a fool of yourself and wasting our time.

But by all means, enjoy your life being at odds with Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin and Ronald Reagan. I could make an impressive list of the top 100 people who disapprove of what Ann said compared to your list of less than 3 people but you’re a waste of time and stuck on stupid.

And stop stalking me, lol ….. you’re scaring me.

          • Judith Lewis

It seems very important to you to win. OK, you win for being the most ignorant, obnoxious, abrasive person it has been my misfortune to run across in all my years on the internet. I am beginning to believe you are either a teenager getting your jollies harassing me or you are a raving maniac who needs mental help. I hope it’s the former.
I really don’t care what you think of me or anyone else. I don’t know you. You mean nothing to me in any way except that you have latched onto me because I expressed an opinion, which, as an American, I have the right to do just as much as you do. I was not attacking you personally, I was simply disagreeing with your opinion.
I have not called you any names but you have persisted in calling me any vile thing your little mind could come up with. The only drama here is coming from you. Obviously, I believe in free speech more than you because you have been telling me my opinion is not as important as yours is. If 99% of Americans think the way you do, which is not the case, this country is in real trouble.
Just for the record, I am not a little girl. I am in my golden years and I intend to keep them so. I will voice my opinion any time I see the need and I will fight for free speech with everything I’ve got and as much as I despise your attitude and the words you’ve chosen to try to squelch my words, as a freedom-loving, God-fearing, flag-waving constitutional Reagan Conservative, I will continue to fight for your right to spew the vile invectives you have showered on me.
Now, I think we have exhausted this subject.

          • Love of Country

God bless you, Judith, stay strong and never stop growing.

          • Judith Lewis

You are the one who is stuck on stupid (your phrase, not mine) and you need a little self reflection of your own. I refuse to argue with you. You are the “point” person, not me. I’m not obsessed with winning. Sorry to disappoint you. You think you can goad me into getting into the mud with you but it’s not going to happen.
You seem to have an unhealthy fixation on Sarah Palin and Michelle Malkin. Maybe they need to check into you and track your activity on the net. I feel sure I’m not the only person you’ve harassed to the creepy point.
            Now, go with God.

          • Love of Country

Everything I’ve said is 100% correct so it’s really childish the way you name call as it’s always ad hominem attacks whereas everything I’ve said about you is constructive criticism and 100% true.

I’ve already absolutely destroyed your foolish attempts at an argument with my 9 point bullet presentation. You don’t care people know you just make up lies all day long? You’ve been wrong about everything, most notably your hollow smugness when insisting Malkin sees things your way when it comes to the word retard but then I proved to you she sees them my way with empirical evidence in her own words. You’re really a small person, Judith, anyone else would admit they were wrong and cut their losses and call it a day but you can’t because

            You’re 100% disingenuous.

            You’re 100% hypocritical.

            You’re 100% a drama queen.

You’re 100% unable to admit when you’re wrong.

            You’re 100% full of projection.

These are all regrettable facts, Judith, and you should be extremely embarrassed but that would require at least one iota of character. You’re like a cross between Stephanie Cutter, DWS and Bill Maher

Again, harrassment? Stalking? You’re so full of garbage and projection it’s embarrassing. It was you who foolishly started all this because you were so incensed when I correctly stated that it’s not cute when public figures associated with the GOP calls people retards.and since then you’ve come at me with nothing but ridiculous lies, strawman arguments and projection and then want to say I’m a stalker for refuting your baseless accusations and showing you the err of your ways? Do you know how stupid you’re being? Honest to God you’re like a little dysfunctional little child with zero sense of shame or integrity …. unbelievable!

As for all your ad hominem attacks … it’s pure desperation by a bully with nothing to offer an intelligent discussion. Frankly, you’re a nagging dishonest pest and appear to be quite the stalker since you want the first word and you want the last word, and every single attempt at a point you’ve thrown against the wall has been absolutely hypocritical projection and baseless ad hominem attacks. (see 9 bullet points)

No need to reply, Judith … we’re all aware you think it is cute when Ann calls people retards … ok? I get it.

However, when you do respond to this post with more stupid lies it will be empirical proof that you call people stalkers for no reason which is another embarrassment for you. You wouldn’t want to debase yourself even further I would hope.

So just for the record, Judith, I fully understand you like the word retard, mkay? And I fully understand you think I shouldn’t have an opinion to the contrary. I GET IT. No need for further discourse but I get that you absolutely love to make up lies and you love to argue and you love the word retard … I GET IT.

          • Love of Country

So if I’m the worst kind of a creep and a troll for daring to say that something Ann said wasn’t too cute …. I can’t imagine what you would have said about me if I called what Ann said as “stupid and shallow” like Michelle Malkin said …. I can only imagine the names you’re calling her right now for being even more critical (and rightfully so) than I am.

I’ll also include some remarks from the Twitchy staff aka Michelle Malkin on the same subject in addition to Malkin’s tweets.

hmm, I don’t believe tonight was the night to be kind, Romney needed to be aggressive. Obama gave a good impression on what a commander and chief should be like. Basically he didn’t flip flop.

No, he needed to act presidential. Remember, he was talking to the independents tonight, not pandering to the base. Obama was rude and mean and Romney rose above it.

PS — Didn’t CNN just say he was “slow”?

    • Elaine

I may not understand this, but doesn’t the word “retard” mean slow or delayed progress? How did it become such an offensive term or insult? People must be really mean and cruel.

      • icowrich

Actually, no. Retardation means that. Retard is a slur.

      • YeahWeWill

I remember as a kid hearing other kids call people “retards.” They weren’t using it to mean slow or delayed progress. I think most people understand exactly how cruel that word is when used against another. I will never condone it. Jmo

        • disqus_eric

          Oh, snap! What a come-back!

          • Miss Monika

            So eloquently put

      • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@twitter-51622601:disqus As a verb, it does mean “to make slow; delay the development or process of; hinder or impede.”

As a slang noun, it means “a.) a mentally retarded person or b.) a person who is stupid, obtuse or ineffective in some way.”

As a non-slang noun, it means “a slowing down, diminution or hindrance, as in a machine.”

It is no more a slur than “lame,” “dumb,” or even “gay” are, but hey, whatever. Apparently the PC police aren’t merely reserved for retarded (oooh, there’s that offensive, but aptly descriptive word again!) liberals calling out conservatives. It’s also reserved for retarded conservatives calling out other conservatives their egos conflict with.

I love Michelle Malkin. I come to this site every day to see what’s going on, what lies the liberals are telling, the illogical things they believe (like having a vagina is the end-all-be-all for women), and which conservatives are living their convictions. This post is a huge disappointment. If anyone dared criticize Ms. Malkin for using a word according to its very definition, Twitchy and the rest of us would be defending her to the end. But there seems to be some beef between Ms. Malkin and Ms. Coulter, so it’s fair game to pile on Ms. Coulter.

        • Miss Monika

Very well said. I agree 100%.
I call on these critics to show the same outrage when the words depressed, panic and anxiety are used outside of a clinical setting

          • Guest

What? Are you kidding me? You just described my personality traits to a ‘T’…LOL!

        • Leslie

Are you kidding me???? My daughter and brother are both developmentally delayed and cognitively challenged. The “R” word is cruel and hurtful. I hope that nobody calls them lame or dumb either. If your knowledge of vocab is so great find a better word.

          • Love of Country

God bless your daughter and your brother, Leslie, some people in this world are just cruel and if and when you point out their shortcomings they just get even nastier and seem like they have no desire to grow.

Stay strong, Leslie, I’m glad your daughter and your brother have you in their lives and wish you all the best.

          • Leslie

Thank you for your kind words.

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@disqus_NKxSA8e63c:disqus no, I’m not kidding you. What about my post is factually untrue? Ann wasn’t speaking about your daughter and brother. She was speaking about a president who is intentionally stupid, obtuse and ineffective to our very way of life. He has diminished our country, hinders unity by encouraging and promoting division, and has delayed economic prosperity (hell, he’s almost killed it entirely).

It isn’t Ann’s fault you made this about you and your family. But since you want to go there, let me ask you this: why is it so offensive to you? You know, I had a nine-week old son who died from a DPT shot nearly 20 years ago. I remember, as the paramedics were trying to breathe life back into his body under the tree in the front yard, how desperately I prayed to God that He would just let Gabe live. I told God I didn’t care if Gabe was retarded or even brain dead (is that word combination offensive, too? Need clarification from the word police here), just so long as he lived and I could continue to love and take care of him. He’s dead. He resides in an urn on my night table. You can call him a jar of ashes. If I had chosen to bury him instead, you could call him food for worms. It’s not offensive. It’s the truth. You could call me sick for keeping him always near me. When he first died, I carried him around in my purse because I couldn’t stand to be parted from him. Was that sick? In my opinion, no. And anything you might say to the contrary wouldn’t sway my opinion or hurt my feelings in the slightest. I know what I know, and that is, if God had seen fit to grant my request, it wouldn’t have mattered if he was brain dead, retarded, mentally handicapped, developmentally delayed, mentally disabled or whatever term the PC police have decided is acceptable today. The truth is, it was a blessing to have him in my life before he received his immunization and he would have continued to be a blessing in my life afterwords. And no amount of labeling him would have made it any different.

Don’t be so quick to be offended. And don’t tell me to find a better word. There was nothing wrong with the word I used other than the fact that you turned this into something about you and then tried to use that as a cudgel to make me do what you want. It’s a tactic that is meant to bully and manipulate people into silence. It’s really quite Orwellian and has no place in a free society.

          • http://twitter.com/dialville Elizabeth Burtch

I support and agree with you. Stay strong. PC has gotten way out of control and your right.

          • Doug Hamilton

Malkin is incapable of letting facts speak for themselves without adding her own brand of hyperbolic snark. She is a paid pot-stirrer and is often far off the mark. Like blaming the left for Brian Whitman’s comments today. Oops! He works for a conservative/Christian radio station and is a contributor and guest on Glenn Beck! Her FB post had 3000+ frenzied anti-left comments before someone apparently tapped her on the shoulder and informed her of the error. That post has disappeared like a cat covering up poop in a litterbox.

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

I’m unaware of Brian Whitman’s comments. What did he say? I am starting to not be as enamored with MM as I previously was, although I still agree with at least 90% of what she says.

This post about Ann, plus the second one and the whole thing with Trump (who really isn’t worth the time and attention) bothers me. So Trump shot off his big mouth about MM? So what? Who cares what Trump says? He’s an absolute IDIOT (with apologies to the idiot community, of course.) I was mildly amused when he was in a war with Rosie because she’s just about the grossest thing to have a voice in Hollyweird and a bigger idiot than even The Donald, but it didn’t make me think he was less of an idiot because of it. As a matter of fact, it just reinforced what I already knew.

So when MM broadcast it that she was being picked on by Trump but that she attacked back, I thought it didn’t make her look all that great. It’d be like my 12 year old neighbor across the street calling me a name a child would call another child, me blasting the kid with my college-educated-voracious-reader vocabulary and then posting flyers on every neighbor’s door, letting them know how I had put the kid in his place. I would look like a bully, picking on someone defenseless. And that’s exactly how MM looks in her response to Trump.

          • http://twitter.com/dialville Elizabeth Burtch

You’re being too sensitive. One day developmentally delayed and cognitively challenged will be cruel and hurtful. When does it ever stop. Words are used to describe and if the description fits then accept it as such.

          • Leslie

I am sensitive for sure but I’m not alone. I am also an advocate. Check out “Rosa’s law”. “Intellectual disability” is replacing “mental retardation” in the federal law books. People, including Ann Coulter can continue to use the pejorative slang word “retard” if they wish. I believe it reflects poorly on them.

Coulter.

In 2008, some proud Leftists wore t-shirts with the vulgar phrase, Sarah Palin is a c***! These people were not evicted from Democratic rallies and events as they should have been. Unlike the Tea Party events, where TP members would not allow racist signs or bad behavior (usually from Dem plants) and would ask them to leave and to take their hatred elsewhere.
For a woman with such a lengthy vocabulary, it’s disappointing and insulting that Ann Coulter would resort to name calling. It demeans her and the target of her comments in a way that also reflects poorly on other Conservatives.

        • http://www.facebook.com/LMishelle Wanda Peterson

But fast forward 2012 and Romney supporters are seen wearing t-shirts that said “Let’s make the white house white again” and were not ejected. But people there to ask Romney to help save their job that Bain was closing and shipping to China just two weeks ago, were ejected and called communists. Boy we have it right don’t we.

Or that Huffpo tweeted about the unverified story numerous times over the weekend. Or that Romney’s campaign issued a statement calling the shirt “reprehensible, with no place in this election.” You know, only telling half the truth isn’t telling the truth. Most of us would call that “lying” or “deliberately deceiving” if our kids, friends or acquaintances pulled a stunt like that.

Actually, yes. I’m a conservative and I agree with Sarah Palin – that word is simply unacceptable as a denigrating term. ANYONE using it needs to be asked to think about what they’re saying.

Look at definition “b” above, provided by GreenEyedGal – you don’t think Obama is at the very least obtuse and ineffective? This hue and cry over Ann’s use of the word retard is just as bad as those who heard the word “niggardly” several years ago used by a politician who then cried racism. (Look that word up, too.)

        • CLASYS

Many years ago, they made a movie Inherit the Wind with the idiot judge played by Harry Morgan who played Col. Potter on Mash [and many other roles known only by us somewhat older folks]. In the story, the prosecution attorney uses an unusual word to complain about his opponent in the case, the defense attorney, etc. and tells the judge he wants no further jactatation from the other attorney. The idiot judge instead warns the prosecutor: They’ll be no bad words like that in my courtroom! [We can only guess what the judge thought it meant, but it was totally appropriate because the other attorney was causing noise in the courtroom..]

        • Helena_Handbasket

Two different things… “niggardly” has absolutely no etymologic link what so ever to the word people confused it with. In fact those two “n words” have their roots in two entirely different language groups. “Retard”, on the other hand is a very specific slur that was meant as such.

    • LoriM

Yes…..I DID criticize Obama’s crack about the Special Olympics. My cousin is mentally retarded and I find the flippant use of the word as degrading. Furthermore, where I work, calling someone a “retard” is a form of harassment. I don’t care if you are democrat, republican, or what….. it is simply sad and pathetic when ANY human being can not watch their mouths and choose slur/slang/degrading terms to put someone else down.

      • http://twitter.com/dialville Elizabeth Burtch

You probably ignore Obama’s lies. “Retard” is not always a form of harassment. If the word describes Obama appropriately then it makes a valid point and apparently got people to listen and wake up.

        • Love of Country

Hey, I got one too at the bottom of the page ….. sometimes, standing up for what is right isn’t always popular. I wish people would at least be aware of why that it is inappropriate for a “luminary” in the GOP to say such things on TV. If she had said that in a private conversation in certain company I think it would have been fine and I certainly agree with her sentiment and like her as a person …. just not her language in a public forum where it may offend really decent people coupled with the fact she represents our Party/Me/You on some level

BTW – I gave you a couple of “up” votes :)))
And another thing … take solace Michelle Malkin sees it our way too and she’s totally awesome.

          • http://www.facebook.com/patdennehy Patrick Dennehy

Love! Finally, someone who is understanding and decent. I couldn’t of said it better myself. Thank you!

          • Love of Country

You’re quite welcome, Patrick. And I’m an anti PC kind of person (ie illegal aliens are still illegal aliens etc) but I am more sensitive about calling people retards and libtards since Sarah Palin and her son have been on my mind but I used to call disingenuous Democrats “libtards” all the time but have all but completely eliminated it from my vocabulary in the last couple of years.

I certainly don’t think Ann is a bad person for saying what she said or any thing like that, I just think she slipped up. I’m not sure if she said it on TV or not but if she did then she shouldn’t have IMHO for the reasons I previously cited.

            Take care, Patrick!

          • http://www.facebook.com/patdennehy Patrick Dennehy

I totally agree with “between friends vs. public forum”. Do I get upset and incensed by the left sometimes? Sure. I just refuse to lower myself to that level. Especially in a public forum. It’s up to us to change the dynamic and the vernacular. I am anit-pc, as well, but I still realize that words hurt. I also realize that people have struggles everyday and I am empathetic to that. I am not so sensitive as to be hurt by words. But everyone is not me and I think a little understanding goes a long way.

          • Kitt

I disagree with Ann’s word choice. Do you agree with twitchy’s “We know her books don’t sell like they used to, but there must be a better way to gin up controversy.” comment?

I believe I do though I know little of her book sales.

Sorry if this is a double post because I already responded once, hit reload, and the post was gone.

kittb …. yes, I agree there is a better way to gin up controversy than to possibly hurt Sarah Palin’s (etc) feelings and also give trolls on these boards more ammunition to use against us.

      • CLASYS

One could complain about the excessive use of not stooping as a major overall part of the problem. In the process of taking that so-called “high road” approach, you lose the voters taken in by the lies of the left. Someone once referred to the fact that Republicans have problem engaging in politics when the other side is performing a knife-fight. It doesn’t work to get votes, and why Ann wanted Chris Christie as a member of the ticket. NJ voted him in because he is the anti-PC Republican not afraid to go even lower than they do if it wins in the end. It is quite retarded [I said that on purpose] to think you can win in politics these days without getting your fingernails dirty; look at McCain, who couldn’t even mention Obama and Socialism in the same sentence [and then Obama did that grin that clearly said, “gee, you finally figured out who I am, but tough, old fart, you’re too late, I already BS-ed them all into voting for me”] and the predicatable outcome and why we are all even here in the first place.

      • syvyn11

You are extremely polite sir. To say that Obama is “just misguided” and has “faulty policies”. You are either a democrat or you have awesome restraint.

      • http://www.facebook.com/patdennehy Patrick Dennehy

Restraint :). Honestly, I feel bad for the guy. For all his education he still can’t seem to make the right decisions. It is hard, I get incensed, but I refuse to resort to “hate”.

        • CLASYS

Don’t waste your time. Obama has the mental disease of all of the world’s other tyrants. Absolute power corrupting absolutely. He had a profoundly bad upbringing that leads to this predictably. Go see 2016 the movie and it will all become quite clear; the world needs to be rid of such a monster by any means possible. For the moment, that means concentrating on the election instead of this profoundly non-event distraction that just shows how many are indeed retarded by falling prey to leftist redefinition and marginalization of the language that makes you incapable of standing up to them.

While I don’t bother with it here, I always use Saul Alinsky tactics on FB when fighting back the left; it incenses them, but it also lowers their credibility. While Ann’s choice of words makes some people way too “twitchy”, the tactic works to throw their crap right back into their face.

No, Obama is not smart at all., You confuse his evil genius handlers with the retarded puppet; Axlerod pulls the strings; all the puppet knows how to do is read a teleprompter. Did you see all the retarded faces he has been making all during the debates? that’s what happens when you separate him from his little video toy while he reads the lies written by others. They are nor retarded at all, but should be, because they are just lying at full speed and sway stupid people who might vote despite being told profound lies over and over again.

Don’t stoop to their level, indeed. Get down and dirty MORE SO and beat them at their own game.

  • Shane Larsen

And, oh, yeah: was vitriolically against Romney before she was for vitriolically for him.

Poor Anne is a bewildered elitist snob struggling for relevance. Don’t be surprised if she goes the Peggy Noonan route: soft-left, soft-headed, sell-out has-been.

I am torn on this. Retard is not a bad word in and of itself. It is used in other ways not related to humans. Retard: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede Retardant: The chemical will retard the spread of fire. The problems have retarded the progress of the program. to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or development She did not call them Mental Retards. Although, their behavior/words are regressive – Chris Matthews, the POTUS, etc.

  • waltzingmtilda

I like a lot of what Ann has to say, and I am not personally offended by the word retard. However…this is nothing but a blatant cry for attention on her part, IMO. She has a book out.

  • http://twitter.com/CalFreiburger Calvin Freiburger

Hold on! Criticizing Coulter’s use of the term “retard” is legitimate, but the snotty “books don’t sell” and “gin up controversy” cracks cross the line. Twitchy seems to be forgetting that she’s still a good, principled person and a valuable conservative ally.

    • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@twitter-475404591:disqus Exactly. It was a legitimate, appropriate use of the word. And for what it’s worth, I posted the following somewhere in this thread (but am unable to find it):

My goodness, haven’t we all just become so sensitive? I’m so sick of PC police deciding what’s OK to say and what isn’t. And Twitchy, your joining in with such insanity is disappointing, to say the least. The word isn’t offensive. It’s not a swear word. It’s not vulgar.

Let’s talk about the meaning of the word “retard,” as relates to humans (as opposed to machinery, although I suppose the argument could be made that government functions as a machine).

As a disparaging slang noun, it’s defined as “a.) a mentally retarded person; b.) a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in someway.”

Is Obama mentally retarded? I don’t know, I think the argument could be made that he is stupid, obtuse or ineffective in someway. Truly, the argument could be made that he is stupid, obtuse or ineffective in many ways.

In reference to a machine, the definition is “a slowing down, diminution or hindrance, as in a machine.” Would anyone argue that, contrary to the title “Progressive,” the liberal agenda has slowed the economy, diminished the American presence and leadership in the world and is a hindrance to just about anything that would make anyone’s life better?

What Ann Coulter said was not untrue. Why did you race to insert yourself on the opposing side of what should be a non-issue?

      • CLASYS

One could say that Twitchy acting that way could be likened to “retarding the spark” as they once said about truly ancient automobiles with manual starting controls that could not only choke the carburetor [to make the mixture richer when starting on a cold day, but then quickly stop that once it was actually running] but also retard the spark [move the timing backwards a bit] so that the engine could “catch” at all just enough to get it to spin, and then also have to adjust that as well once it finally got going. [Remember, extremely low octane gas and you need stuff like this!].

During this recent political “season” there have been some supporters of Ron Paul who dreamed up an imaginary highly distorted vision of RP that was grotesquely different from the genuine article [which while I have differences with, is not as bad as the image these clueless political virgins conjured up; many of them had just voted for Obama]. Some talk radio people refer to the followers of “unicorn” Ron as opposed to the actual one, father of Rand Paul [who in turn has positions different son from father].

In some circles, these clueless young ‘uns became known as Paultards. Worse still, they thought it was cool to be called that, not realizing the inherent ridicule.

      • TonyMontana3

So it’s ok for her to use it? Ok then it’s ok for liberals to call conservatives retards, right? And you’re not going to complaing about it?

        • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

If a Republican was “stupid, obtuse or ineffective in some way” or was “slowing down, diminution or hindrance, as in a machine” our government, our way of life, our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, you’re darned straight I’d call them “retards” or call them out for “retarding” the process of freedom.

Here are a couple I would be willing to give that label to: Boehner, Graham, McConnell, MCCAIN, Snowe, Murkowski … Would you like me to go on with the list? Let’s face it, there are very few politicians these days who hold firm to their conservative principles.

Having said that, I would rather suffer the retardation inflicted by the Republicans than the retardation inflicted by Obama. Obama has done more harm in four years than McCain could have hoped to accomplish in eight. And the thing about heading toward ruination slower is that you have more of an opportunity to reverse or even stop the damage.

          • Hey now

@twitter-31863438:disqus You’re an idiot. It’s cool if I call you that right? Since it’s just a word, and freedom of speech and all. Idiot. You can’t get mad at me because “Exactly. It was a legitimate, appropriate use of the word.” Idiot…

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@disqus_scIUQ9hN6k:disqus No, I’m not angry with you. Your reply actually made me laugh! How long did it take you to come up with that brilliant retort? Did you spend any time looking up the definition of “idiot”?

Its primary definition is “an utterly foolish or senseless person.” Are you using this definition in an to insult me? Because we both know I’m not an idiot. I use words according to their meaning. I am not obtuse, stupid or ineffective (I got you to respond, after all). Nor am I slowing down, diminishing or hindering, or attempting to slow down, diminish or hinder anyone’s Constitutionally protected right to free speech. I don’t label speech I don’t like as “hate speech” when others have subjectively decided that certain words (not even vulgar words), are unacceptable, regardless of what their actual meaning is.

Its secondary definition is a psychological term (no longer in technical use; considered offensive) that means “a person of the lowest order in a former and discarded classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25.” Since my mental age is greater than three and my IQ about 6 times the threshold used in this discarded diagnosis, this definition does not apply either.

Please clarify: which definition were you using in your humorous attempt to insult me? Was your post an attempt to show me how “hateful” it is to call someone a name like idiot or retard? If so, how does your calling me a name not make you hateful? I’m getting the sense here that your response wasn’t well reasoned or thought out. Be that as it may, I appreciate your attempt to put me in my place. I needed a laugh today and you certainly provided one.

P.S. The next time you take someone to task for their word usage, especially when discussing definitions of words and the manner in which they have been used, you might try actually telling the person how he or she was wrong. For example, I stated that it was a legitimate, appropriate use of the word and then when on to define the word with a verifiable source, supporting my assertion the use was appropriate. In a well reasoned and thought out argument, you would come back and tell me how I was wrong based on verifiable sources (not your feelings). This would take some work and actual thought on your part, rather than a knee jerk reaction to a word you instinctively don’t like, but you’ll find it’s much more effective than doing the thing you claim to be against. :)

I wish everyone could spend a day with my “retard” daughter. She could probably change a few minds about why it is NOT ok to use the word retard. Feel as you may about somebody you disagree with, there are so many other words that can be used to make your point. Words do matter, and from personal experience I can tell you that some words really do hurt. I would dare say my daughter “gets it” is so many more ways than all of the flawed normal people in the world. Is she going to cure cancer or perfect light speed travel? I assure you the answer is no. Could she hold the key to solving so many problems in the world if the world would only stop a moment and pay attention? Of this I have no doubt. Shame on Ann Coulter for the choice of word, shame on those who see no harm in it. In this case politics be damned. This is one issue everyone should be able to agree on.

There is nothing wrong with the word retard. As a verb, it means delay, or hold back in terms of progress or development. As a noun, it refers to a person who has a mental disability (Oxford Dictionary). There is nothing inherently wrong with the word itself, only the derogatory way in which some people have used it in the past to denigrate mentally handicapped individuals. I grew up in a time when it was common-place to refer to mentally handicapped individuals as “mentally retarded”. That was the era (and I’m not that old). I used to work with these individuals. Then the terms changed, and we were informed to refer to them as “mentally-handicapped” individuals. I think the terms have changed again: I’ve heard the term “mentally-challenged” used as well. I don’t know what the current phrase is. I don’t believe Ann intended to denigrate mentally-challenged individuals – it seems quite apparent that she used the term as a put-down directed towards Obama, only. The term “idiot” is bandied about frequently – would that have been better? Or is that a term that is politically-incorrect too? If not, why not? Why is it okay to refer to someone as an “idiot”, but not a “retard”?
The bigger issue, in my opinion, is free-speech: when are people going to stop being bullied and intimidated by the politically correct language police? It is just common-decency that when interacting with “mentally-handicapped/challenged” individuals, that we treat them with respect and kindness, and should never use a derogatory term when referring to them. While I would not want to use a term that would cause someone hurt, I detest the idea of having someone or some bureaucracy tell me which words I’m allowed to use! It seems to me to be a fascist or totalitarian tactic: define what language people may or may not use. Notice, how quick people (even some conservatives) jumped on Ann for her poor choice of word. The language-police are very well established in this country. Next, the thought-police: anyone who harbors any politically-incorrect thoughts will be chastised, shunned, intimidated, re-educated. We see this everday: people are bullied or intimidated if they dare not tow the line on same-sex marriage issues. The left typically uses harassment, intimidation and violence against persons that stray from their ideologies. Perhaps it would have been wiser if Ann had chosen a different word, but on the other hand I don’t think people should be so quick to cave to the politically correct language and thought police. I would think that conservative people would fight more vigorously for freedom of speech, even if it is intolerant or rude speech.

Her intent is not the issue. The word itself, when used in the context as it was, is a slur against the disabled. PERIOD. Many people drink and drive, and sometimes terrible consequences result. I am sure it was not their intent to harm someone by driving impaired. That changes nothing about the results of the action. Likewise. calling someone a retard in order to convey some sort of disapproval has the unintended consequence of denigrating a group of people who simply do not deserve that. Why would it be so difficult to simply refrain?

          • rbtpowell

The intent is the only issue, how is it you feel justified in forcing your moral sensibilitys on others. She denigrates the mentally challenged by using the word. WHO she directed it toward is not relavent

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

How does the use of that word denigrate the mentally challenged? Why does “retarded” denigrate the mentally challenged, but “mentally challenged” doesn’t denigrate the mentally challenged?

Mentally: 1.) In or with the mind or intellect; intellectually. 2.) With regard to the mind.

Challenged: 1.) (Used as a euphemism) disabled or handicapped (usually preceded by an adverb): Physically challenged. 2.) deficient or lacking (usually preceded by an adverb or noun): ethically challenged.

Euphemism: 1.) The substitution of a mild, indirect or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh or blunt. 2.) The expression so substituted: “To pass away” is a euphemism for “to die.”

Basically, the phrase “mentally challenged” is a way to not say what you really mean, to say it without really saying it. Is that your style? So be it. You’re entitled to your own style and personal preference. Likewise, Ann is entitled to her own style and personal preference. She prefers to be blunt and direct. She says what she means. That’s my personal preference and style, too. That doesn’t make you right and Ann and me wrong. Conversely, it doesn’t make you wrong and Ann and me right. It just makes us different, with different ways of doing things.

WHO she directed the comment toward is relevant. If she called Obama “mentally challenged,” you would still be outraged that she had used a combination of words that have a personal meaning to you. But if someone used “mentally challenged” to describe your daughter, you don’t consider that outrageous because again, it has a personal meaning to you as a label that describes what is very precious to you. All of this is based in emotion rather than fact. Personally, I think I would be upset if she called Obama “mentally challenged” because he’s not. His ability to think is NOT challenged. But his thoughts and actions are decidedly retarded, in that they are stupid, obtuse, ineffective and are for the express purpose of diminishing this country, hindering its economy, and bringing its citizenry to its knees. The word used to describe our Commander in Chief was spot on and is in no way the problem. The problem is the man who is our Commander in Chief.

No, this is not the Republicans of the country. Wehre were all of those people jumping on republicans as a whole when democrats were threatening to burn the White House, Rape 13 year old girls, etc?
As well, if it is unacceptable, which it is, it is that way, period. it doesn’t matter if she is talking about POTUS or some stranger.
Nor does it matter what his levle of itnelligence is..
SOme of teh qualifications for the statment were just as bad, even from Obama supporters.

I like Ann, and I think she’s a great voice for conservatism. But she has an adolescent desire to shock which sometimes gets the best of her. It’s certainly not like she doesn’t know better. Yes, libs have made plenty of distasteful and disrespectful remarks, but that doesn’t excuse Ann for being tacky and insensitive. Whether you think what she’s said is only mildly objectionable or totally disgraceful, it’s just not smart because it doesn’t help her cause.

  • http://www.facebook.com/W.Eric.Parker Eric Parker

I’ve often suspected that Michelle Malkin considers Ann Coulter the competition.

    • http://www.facebook.com/patdennehy Patrick Dennehy

      I don’t think M.M. is that petty…Hopefully

    • Hiraghm

Ann Coulter is no competition to Michelle Malkin. That’s like saying Harley-Davidson is competition for Ford.

  • YeahWeWill

Retard is probably a very funny term except if your child or family member has Downs Syndrome then it is just cruel.

    • Johnny Banco

Do you even know what the word “retard” means? Children with lead poisoning often suffer from mental retardation – does this mean they are suffering from Down’s Syndrome as well?

Political correctness, which has an infantile & socialistic emotional basis, is itself retarded, besides being manipulative, and disruptive of free speech.

      • YeahWeWill

Yes I know full well what the word means. I also know that context is important. Terms such as hypocrite also come to mind. I will not voice my outrage at liberals who name call and insult without likewise saying that it is wrong for conservatives. I do not rationalize and /or excuse “mean girl” behavior. The use of the term “retard” by Coulter was wrong.

        • Hiraghm

You sound like the kind of guy who would have decried our own soldiers killing the enemy because killing is bad, m’kay? Let’s not lower ourselves to the enemy’s murderous level by engaging in the same tactics he uses!

Her use of ad-hominem was her choice. However, her choice of ad-hominem was dead on balls accurate.

          • YeahWeWill

Think what you will. I think it was wrong.

Can’t say I always agree with her choice of words. But I still like reading her books and columns.

  • VL123

As a conservative I am not a fan of Ann Coulter….to me she is a RINO. Ha..yep. But the same political correctness that says I can’t say something is retarded or gay is the same political correctness that says terrorist attacks are because of Youtube videos or workplace violence. All SO WE DON’T offend someone. Are there “nicer” ways of saying things….yea…but then again we don’t have cursing NOT to make a point. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

    • Hiraghm

I agree that Ann Coulter is more Republican than conservative. I became disillusioned by her some time ago. Nevertheless… the only thing wrong with her use of the term “retard” is that she used it as a pronoun, rather than as a verb, and that ad-hominem never wins arguments.

      • VL123

I agree…name calling never wins the argument…but then again I don’t like speech police.

  • Alex Pelton

Oh give me a break, I still love Ann. Shes trying to be funny, she used a common insult, I’m sure she wasn’t talking about disabled children, give me a break and stop being so politically correct. This is coming from the father of a child with special needs.

    • Conservative

A common insult? The thing is that words matter! “retard” does NOT mean “stupid” which is how she is using the word. It disparages an entire community of people born with a developmental disability. It’s not about political correctness, it’s about sensitivity. It’s about being human. It’s about NOT lowering yourself to the standards and practices of the left. I have a special needs child too, one with Down Syndrome who is actually “retarded”… my other children ACHE when people use that word. When did we become so heartless? I find it hard to believe this is all coming from “conservatives”.

      • Hiraghm

Words matter… “Abort” does NOT MEAN “kill a baby”… otherwise NASA would be mass-murderers. Oh, dear… a word having more than one meaning, like “gay” vs “gay”? Heaven forfend!

        According to Merriam-Webster:
“: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede”

        Sounds like Obama to me.

        • MaryUKtheScot

This takes me back to when I was 14 when my friends and I would call each other idgits, dildos, and retards (and much worse). Now that I’m 47 I find that I have liberal acquaintances who will launch into personal attacks when they are unable to form a coherent thought or retort in a political or religious discussion. It’s as if their brain gives up and resorts to a primordial mechanism of launching profanity and simple-minded attacks as a defense barrier, the equivalent of putting one’s fingers in the ears and uttering loudly “LALALALALALALA.”

However, the idea that “they do it, so why can’t we?” lowers us to their level. Grow up Ann, you’re an adult, behave like one. That goes for the rest of you. Now go to your room!

    • Hiraghm

“lowers us to their level”. Yeah, I’d rather get down in the mud with them to kick their arses than stay all pristine and clean and LOSE.

Time to bury the Coulter-Malkin feud thing. How did this stupid crap get started anyway?

Malkin is an investigative reporter that writes columns and has a blog. Coulter is a columnist that gives speeches and yes she’s a bomb thrower.

I”m with Ann on her strategy: inside-the-Beltway Republicans have tried to ‘play nice’ with these Liberal retards going on 40 years. They play dirty.

Maybe some nastiness is in order to save the country.

    • James Atkins

Anyone who gets “offended” at the mere mention a word, in this case “retard”, has had too much sensitivity training. What would offend me would be witnessing someone actually bullying a person that has lower mental capability..then I might take issue with it.

      • Hiraghm

        ::applause::

      • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I don’t care that she used the word and I hate the speech police, but it doesn’t gain us anything to say those things. I hate when liberals say vulgar crap about Romney so I am not going to sit here and be a hypocrite when someone on our side does it.

Ann Coulter getting smeared for “retard” ? Funny how everyone gets so indignant when the right makes a snarky comment. Draw the attn. away from our candidates poor performance by making a big freaking deal about a twitter comment. And you’re siding with the left? “Giggle-snort” to quote you.

This is why I’ve come to loath most of the conservatives on the internet. You can’t help eating your own.
Ann Coulter has done more for the conservative cause than all of you combined and you never fail to throw her under the bus every chance you get. Nice going.
Political correctness is NOT better when it comes from the right. It’s worse because you retards should all know better.

    • Johnny Banco

I LOVE your oh-so-appropriate usage of “retard” here, and if anyone gives you a down vote for it and/or me one for supporting you over it, yes, such a person IS a retard! :)

      • Jaynie59

Figures, they deleted my reply to you.

        • Johnny Banco

What was the gist of what you said?

btw, I had one of my posts in this thread (sillily) deleted, too! :)

Wow; Hypocrite. You( collectively) scream that conservatives protect their own, yada yada yada and on the flip side, you (personally) scream that conservatives “can’t help eating your own.” So which is it? Or can it just be viewed as a lose-lose proposition in your eyes?

      • Jaynie59

I’m not a conservative. I’m an ex-liberal. I’ll be a conservative when the Beta Male Dickless Wonders that infest the conservative blogoshere grow a couple of balls, and when people like Michelle Malkin decide it’s better to keep their mouth shut instead of throwing another conservative icon under the bus.
        I’m not holding my breath.

So glad that the big issues are being addressed. Doesn’t anybody have bigger fish to fry than to focus on the word retard? Good grief, take a good look at the last 4 years around here. All of the disgusting things that the wonderful POTUS has said to and about others and getting all offended about Ann Coulter’s comments set you off? Come on really?

  • http://www.facebook.com/bill.mitchell.3954546 Bill Mitchell

Ann, just do us all a favor and shut up until after the election. Calling anyone a “retard” in 2012? No offense, but are you insane?

    • Hiraghm

Ann has truly jumped the shark. Nothing like giving the left a HUGE talking point there Ann. Now the entire right must disown you. Well done. You just destroyed your own career. The lesson? Don’t drink and tweet.

You just took all the good Romney did by seeming reasonable and presidential and shot it in the head. Idiot.

    • Hiraghm

Romney didn’t DO any good by seeming reasonable and Presidential. All he did was prove that he has no fresh ideas on foreign policy, and what ideas he does have are the same kind of impotent crap that has made a laughingstock of America in the world.

People like Ann Coulter and Bill Maher are what”s wrong with politics these days. Anything for attention and totally negates any points you might have when you use words like that. “Retarded” and “gay” are words used by 12 year olds. She needs to grow the hell up.

  • ceyanne

I think we can all agree that Ann’s choice of words may not have been the best but I really can’t be be bothered to get worked up into a lather over it. Liberals have said things just as bad and worse. Yeah, yeah, 2 wrongs don’t make a right, but I am not going to give power to the PC thought police either. For those suggesting that she should have called him an idiot, you do realize that prior to the term retarded, mentally challenged people were referred to as idiots (i.e the village idiot, who was likely a mentally challenged person?) At what point do you stop being offended? How far back do you go? Should we stop using the term idiot now? There’s no sense to the in-fighting. Be offended by Ann’s statement or don’t, but as conservatives we still have a common goal that needs to be focused on. This is nothing but a distraction, a bump in the road, if you will. Ann isn’t running for POTUS or making policy for our country. In the end, it doesn’t matter what she says. Pay attention to who DOES matter, and save your outrage and indignation for someone who *really* deserves it.

    • Hiraghm

A “moron” is someone with an IQ of 51-70. An “idiot” is someone with an IQ of 0-25.

  • djshawman

    Not OK, Ann.

  • AttackOfTheKillerTomatos

If the comment was made by a Liberal and it was Romney being called a retard, I have a feeling there would be a big deal made out of it. It would then be pointed out how wrong it was to use the term retard, by a bigger majority.

I used to like Ann, but I’ve grown tired of her. She just doesn’t seem like the bad ass Liberal ass kicker, that she used to be. Also, I think sometimes she goes a bit overboard with supporting Romney, like how Obama supporters go overboard with supporting him. It’s not that supporting Romney is bad, it’s just the creepy way I’ve noticed she goes about it at times and it just reminds me of how creepy Obama’s supporters get over supporting him. Like obsessively love struck, for example. I find that behavior towards any candidate to be creepy.

    Just my opinion.

  • falcon7204

She should have called him a retardant – kind of like a piece of clothing that’s “flame retardant.” He’s slowing us down, hindering our true progress (as opposed to the term “progressive”) and getting in our way. That’s what I consider a growth and progress retardant.

    • Judith Lewis

By George, I think you’ve got it!

She’s a sarcastic gal, is all. I have a child with developmental delays — I am not offended by her use of the word. I am not the PC police.

However, I am sick of all the name calling. Too many people trying to come up with zingers all the time. Is wanting people to be classy the same as being PC? I promise not to send her hate mail/tweets/call for her ouster/try to get her to apologize!

Ummmm, have you spent any time in this comment section. Good job for Twitchy for calling her out but more than half the commenters are going into full spin to protect her. Speaking of trolls, that pretty effectively describes all of Coulter’s body of work, whether tweets, columns, interviews or books.

  • texastommy

Wow, after eight years of uneding insults directed at George Bush, THIS offends them?

  • Timothy Noonan

If hell exists, it might just have frozen over…Malkin and Twitchy called out conservative talking head. Surprised, even though this is low-hanging fruit.

  • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I like Ann Coulter but times like this she goes too far, it is hard to defend conservatism as the true ideology of civility when people like her mindlessly use insults. When this happens the conversation becomes about the insults instead of the ideas which ruins any chance of converting anyone to our side.

    • Hiraghm

I’d rather conservatism stop being the true ideology of civility, if its being so is going to cost conservatives power… I don’t care about being civil to the enemy. That’s what’s getting our soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

All I am saying is that it is hard to expose liberal hatred and ignorance when we stoop to their level. Let liberals talk their talk but let our actions speak for themselves.

      • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I get just as fired up against liberals as anyone else, but if we start using slurs against them we are just giving them more ammo against us. Our best weapon against them is facts, we don’t need to stoop to their level.

We are fighting a war of words against Americans though, let’s not forget that most liberals are good people that have been misled by the media. If we start acting like the boorish morons the media portray us as then that only strengthens the liberal agenda and we have lost all hope of winning anyone over to us.

      • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

We do have to fight though, but we do it with facts instead of petty name calling.

This is when Ann annoys me/do not care what the other side has said(well I do care but.)not a fan of they do it so it is ok for it to be done in return. I prefer to not use the same inappropriate verbiage…….Ann has an arsenal of facts to use to discount someone she does not need to use language such as that.

    • Hiraghm

I really HATE the term “inappropriate”. Who the heck gets to decide what is “appropriate”? I’ll tell you who does; the person expressing the thought, that’s who!

      • vonvervengarten

If you can’t work out appropriate word usage, there are high school equivalency programs out there. I think you can go for free too (just in case you are part of the 47% 😉 )

I am a Conservative, Tea Party member, Romney supporter and Obama detractor. I can’t stand Ann Coulter because she’s so nasty. She does absolutely NOTHING for the right by saying garbage like this. We don’t need to get personal to take Obama down. His policies provide more than enough material to get him booted out of office. People like Coulter with their idiotic name calling and personal insults make it easier for the left to convince others to vote for O because those of us on the right are really a bunch of bigots and hatemongers. Do us all a favor, Ann, either shut your trap or use your diarrhea of the mouth on the other side and make THEM look stupid. Imbecile.

    • Hiraghm

Really? Obama’s policies provide more than enough material do they? Then why is he dead even in the polls, usually leading, hm? Could it be because 47% of the electorate are “retards”? (my apologies to any mentally challenged children who have the capacity to read this, yet not the capacity to figure out that I’m insulting presumably healthy adults and not them…)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1064615836 Kathy Belt

Jim, the fact that they’re in a dead heat speaks volumes. Obama has lost so much ground in this election and THAT’S the story here.

In October 2008, Obama had clear leads in every national poll conducted that month. There was no race, much less a dead heat. Obama had it wrapped up. Now that America has gotten to see his FAILED POLICIES and his lack of leadership, he’s barely keeping up.

He came in with numbers that were off the charts and just since the first debate, when he actually had to answer questions about his poor performance, and he didn’t have the media to protect him against being asked hard questions, he’s lost.

The tie in Oct. 17-20 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll represented the first time this year Obama hasn’t led in the survey.
Romney erased a 5-percentage-point lead Obama had in the same poll in mid-September, which had narrowed to a 3-point advantage by late last month. Obama’s sinking and he can’t do a thing to stop it. His policies are doing all of the work for us.

    • YeahWeWill

      ^ Agree Kathy Belt

  • News Reporter

This is not news. Why spend the time on this when so many other important topics can be discussed? Is the Twitchy writer of this article attempting to distract us? It appears so. Just because the author of this article has personal issues with Ann Coulter, why bring it out on this site? Juvenile meet juvenile.

Ann Coulter is a prominent person who offended many people with her tasteless comment. Sorry, but this is news. And by the way, we cover plenty of other topics.

And finally, Twitchy has to acknowledge, one way or another, that this article, and their attempted attack on Ann Coulter, is extremely unpopular with their readers!

How come we can put a man on the moon, but that man can’t be Ann the Man Coulter?

Heaven forbid a Dem saying something like this. I wonder would these opinions change? Kind of like Mitt Robme flip flops…

    • YeahWeWill

Mine would not change. Except I don’t agree with your flip flop statement;)

Proud of Obama for showing restraint & only ruthlessly nailing Mitt Romney on half his flip-flops. More would have been unneccessary force.

        • YeahWeWill

Obama only succeeded in showing his propensity for trying to lie his way out of situations. If you are proud of that, so be it. I think it’s pretty desperate and/or devious.

          • GEORGE_W_TUSH

Pres. Obama will find Romney harder to defeat than bin Laden because at least with bin Laden you knew his exact position.

          • YeahWeWill

We’ve heard often enough from Nobama that he almost singlehandledly with superhuman powers put bin Laden in that position. His only so-called claim to fame during his entire term and even that is a me me me look at ME! No, he was notified when he could not hamstring our Navy SEALs; So in spite of him….

Hate speech? What the hell is hate speech? It doesn’t exist in a country that promises free speech. People can say what ever the hell they want in this country. I’m so over the damn “thought” police and “hurt feelings” police mentality that is sweeping the nation. No one has a right to not have their feelings hurt.

    • vonvervengarten

Cause nothing can make you feel more excellent and so brilliantly smart than taking advantage of people who are challenged. What a great reason to have free speech…awesome!!!

Nobody was questioning her right to say it, but rather exercising their own right to free speech to say that she is a classless moron. And I will exercise my right to say that you are also a braindead semi-literate gleeking beef-witted codpiece, my dear sir.

      • Judith Lewis

You said….MORON! Call the speech police!!!

  • Kate

I agree it was stupid for her to say, but you just know that some of the liberals bashing her were the same ones who used that phrase (and many more) to describe George W. Bush on a daily basis. I’m so sick of those people demanding “respect” for Obama when they couldn’t give it to his predecessor.

    • YeahWeWill

It’s not a matter of respect to POTUS, It is a matter of recognizing the hurtful word itself and what it has represented for so long. Name-calling is wrong! Whether it is libs calling Bush a liar, Eva Longoria calling Ryan a “prison bitch” Romney a “twat” or women and minorities voting for them “stupid,” or Coulter calling anyone a “retard.” I have been busy voicing my opinion that liberals stoop to insults and inappropriate…yes INAPPROPRIATE language and I am not going to condone it from the right either. That’s just the way I am.

  • Hiraghm

“Hot on the heels of her mean-spirited mockery of National Coming Out Day, Coulter used the word “retard” tonight to describe the President of the United States.”

The HELL she did! She used the word to deride BARACK OBAMA. Stop playing the leftist game of “ooh respect the President”. Well, he’s NOT the President, and his foreign policy, his lack of understanding the Constitution in spite of being a Law Professor, and his total inability to grasp the wonderful concept known as capitalism prove him to be chronically unthinking.

My vulgar term for such a “chronically unthinking” individual? Retard.
It’s one thing to taunt a mentally disabled child with chants of “retard”. It’s quite another to engage in ad-hominem calling another adult whose every action and word fits the above definition.

Never thought I’d be defending Ann Coulter from one of Michelle Malkin’s creations.

    • Jesse Malkin

Obama is indeed the President. If you can’t accept that, you’ve got a problem.

    • vonvervengarten

Jim, can a “retard” help the way they are? So, then we should all give Obama a pass for being a lying socialist, because he can’t help the way he is? This isn’t even a proper word to use for a conniving and manipulating class warfare monger. It’s not proper word usage!….even if you just have to live with the playground bully vocabulary standards.

      • http://www.facebook.com/matt.robinson.75 Matt Robinson

The one currently in question sure can. You really need to give up your definition of “retard” being a handicapped person for this discussion. Its old. we understand your point, it just simply doesnt matter becaue its not pertinent to this situation, and nobody is saying it that way. if you are over sensitive, it is not my problem to coddle you out of that and into the real world where sometimes you wont agree with everything. what you are doing is just like the left deciding they are allowed to define Chicago and Food Stamps as racist innuendos. #notgonnahappen

    • YeahWeWill

Unfortunately he IS the POTUS, thus his RE-ELECTION campaign. All the rationalization in the world of using a hurtful word just doesn’t hold water with me. Apparently with a few others also….JMO

  • Kele Johnson

Ann, Ann, Ann…you are an intelligent and articulate woman. Please don’t stoop to name calling! It’s beneath you. It’s beneath us all as Conservatives. Let’s just leave that sort of tactic to the left.

  • EastValleyConservative

Marlee Matlin lost me at “stop the hate speech”. Seriously? It’s hate speech now? This is classic Ann Coulter, and to be expected really.

    • vonvervengarten

Yeah, my 8 year old son with Down syndrome thinks it’s awesome!! If you can’t even acknowledge the capacity of slurs like this to hurt people, maybe you are part of a community you didn’t realize.
If someone needs the destructive repertoire of third graders to get a point across, it must be one hell of a point.

      • EastValleyConservative

Vonvervengarten–I suggest you cease with the feigned dramatics. Did I say it was appropriate? Did I say it was okay? NO, did not. I have a problem with it suddenly being classified as hate speech, this was my issue. Ann Coulter was ridiculous to state this, and it didn’t win her any points with anyone. But for you to comment after me with the nonsense you just did just revealed something much more than what you are letting on. If you have an issue with Ann, take it up with her, don’t presume to know what my stance is and castigate me in a public forum on your PRESUMPTIONS. I am part of a community that doesn’t put up with people like you using your downs syndrome child as a platform from which to attack those you disagree with. Go back and read my comment—your reaction says it all. Your issue isn’t about your child, it’s with anyone who is on the right.

        • vonvervengarten

Well, unfortunately for you, I am part of your community. I am a regular visitor here and a conservative mother who happens to have a child with Down syndrome. You can rah rah Ann Coulter all day and night for all I care (I used to enjoy her antics, until she began using “retard” as a regular denigration. I suppose she thought it would work well in the low character parameters of Twitter.) It is hate speech, it is hurtful. And not only is it hurtful, the people who it hurts cannot defend themselves. It’s a cheap shot and I am calling her on it and anyone else who supports it. Sorry to be raining on your free speech parade, but if you want to advocate the use of words that hurt people, then you are certainly strong enough to get some hurt back. Right?

          • EastValleyConservative

Shaking my head at your ignorance. Read my comment. I said it was classic Ann Coulter and to be expected. Nowhere did I champion her or her comments. In general, I ignore her because she goes about things in the wrong way. So again, your attack, and yes, von—that is what it is-on me and assuming I was cheering her on is on you, solely you. In your quest to make your point, all you have done is showcased your ignorance and reactionary nature. You are free to be offended, you are not free to silence anyone. Go read up on “hate speech”. I have a damn hard time believing you are a conservative and do not know the origins and intent of classifying hate speech. I would never denigrate downs children or learning disabled children. Your assumption of such is again, A REFLECTION ON YOU. Instead of dealing with the Ann Coulter issue, you have gone on full attack—on me. That’s pathetic von, and whether you identify as conservative or not matters little. Your diversion of the issue at hand by attacking another person is beyond reprehensible. You barely read my comment, then misinterpreted it, then attacked. Again, pathetic. That’s the kind of conservative we DON’T need in our midst. Liberals behave that way. Get over your emotions and face some cold hard facts and stop patting yourself on the back for participating in what you believe to be a good fight. A good fight involves one in which you have solid ground, and solid principles. What you have done is engaged in liberal reactionary childishness. Case in point, you said you were throwing it back because I certainly could handle it….

          • EastValleyConservative

And might I add, after reading most of your responses here, you have recommended removing words from the vocabulary as a matter that it wouldn’t be that restrictive. WOW. You seriously cannot identify as a conservative.

          • vonvervengarten

I am assuming you are thinking that I have said we need to remove words from the dictionary? It is hard to discern your point. If you want to reread any of my posts carefully, you will see that I have advocated a number of times to use more and varied words from the dictionary. If you want to point out where I have said anything about removing words, please copy and paste below…

          • EastValleyConservative

I see you aren’t going to bother to address your actions. You know what they are. You are in attack mode.

            Your words:
If we made the effort to remove gay slurs and racial slurs, certainly
removing “retard” isn’t going to straightjacket your ability to be
expressive. You can be much, much more amazingly outrageous if you
            crack open a dictionary.

The word remove is clearly there. Next up. Again, are you going to address your infantile attack on me? No, you won’t. You are going to parse because you can’t control your temper over Ann Coulter and instead lash out at someone who clearly showed no support for her. I explained my hate speech comment, now it’s your turn dear. YOU CAN’T. Live with the fact that you have outed yourself for the hypocritical liberal that you clearly are. Conversation over.

          • EastValleyConservative

Would you prefer to continue this conversation on email? It appears you have issues von–yet another attack from you claiming that I use slurs. Why? Because you are a coward and cannot admit you attack. Nor did you refute the fact that you are a liberal. Get over yourself, spending time making false accusations against others says a whole hell of a lot about you. Here is my email von….[email protected]. Let’s talk, I’ll be happy to continue to obliterate your infantile fantasies you have managed to make up regarding my one comment. Be brave, let’s talk. Personally, I don’t think you have the nerve, because you are wrong, and you know you are wrong.

          • vonvervengarten

Yes, standing up for my child and every person like him (which is my job) is so wrong headed of me.
Look, you are obviously intent on being able to use “retard”. Go for it. To you, and others here, it’s apparently something really worth fighting for. Enjoy.

          • YeahWeWill

@ Von; Got your back on this one!

          • EastValleyConservative

You must be a liberal–von falsely attacks others and you approve? For god’s sake read her comments. She apparently needs your approval.

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@not4thegimmeparty:disqus, people like @yeahwewill:disqus and @vonvervengarten:disqus aren’t interested in protecting constitutional rights. They just want to shut up the people who are interested in protecting constitutional rights. You cannot reach a person like this with appeals to reason and logic because it sounds like some strange, foreign language to them. I’d be willing to bet that both these commentors were educated in progressive public institutions up to grade 12 and likely beyond, where students are only ever taught to use what they feel as their guideline for what is right or wrong. Of course, pointing out to them that feelings are changeable, depending on time, age, circumstance and so on, would again be speaking to them in a language they don’t understand.

Hasn’t the USDoE done a great job?

          • EastValleyConservative

Yes Green, the DOE has done a splendid job. And my mistake was ever trying to have a rational conversation with her. She clearly has an agenda which has zero to do with her son and everything to do with her need to cast others in a negative light, even if it means lying and making it up as she goes along. You can’t fix stupid nor can you have a conversation with it. :)

          • vonvervengarten

You guys are smart power personified. Got everything figured out, especially your constitutional right to offend disabled people. If that isn’t a value or right to cling to, I don’t know what is.
Embrace it. It suits you very well.

          • vonvervengarten

Let me make it easy for you. Google my name…all my comments come up. Read them and come back and tell me I’m liberal.
Who wants to run with the false narrative?

          • EastValleyConservative

Von–you are a mere distraction for more important matters. Why would I google your nonsense when your attacks are in this very thread for all to see? Instead of admitting what you have done, you point a different direction. You are a coward, and might I add a bald faced liar who doubles down every time you are challenged. Go find another target, you aren’t worth my time. Your agenda in life appears to be “attack and lie”. Go for it. You’ll make liberals proud.

          • vonvervengarten

Oh goodness no, don’t dig too deep…you’ve got a great little alternate reality narrative going. Why mess with that?

          • YeahWeWill

@ Not: is that the best you can do? I ” must be a liberal” ? Short answer; I do not agree with your stated opinion. So sue me;)

          • vonvervengarten

            :)

          • EastValleyConservative

Yet, you have manufactured a complete false narrative that first, I ever stood up for Ann, second, that I approve of the word being used, and not the least of which, that now, I use all of these slurs. Standing up for your child is fine. I never attacked him. Your beef is with Ann. Instead of addressing the issue at hand, you have gone on a wildly imaginative attack on me coming up with your own facts. Odd. If you are conservative, I would think you would be able to log some common sense here. What is your excuse for making up your own facts along the way dear? Each time you are asked, you come up with another false accusation upon me—–this reflects on you Von. God Bless you for taking up for your child, but you are negating most of your good intentions by falsely accusing others because you cannot control your emotions nor your urge to make up falsehoods about others. How pathetic are you exactly? You didn’t stand up for your child in this thread dear—-you attacked someone without reason and then proceeded to make up and label me along the way which speaks to your nature. PATHETIC.

          • http://www.facebook.com/matt.robinson.75 Matt Robinson

You arent the person that gets to dictate usage guidlines, or emotionally define words to YOUR benefit. do you really think ANYBODY on this forum, Coulter included, is talking about handicapped kids? saying that “retarded” is hate speech is like the obama people labeling any reference to Chicago, or food stamps as racist. you simply do not get to interpret and dictate the english language to benefit you. Paging Merriam and Webster, we have an english authoritarian. and your argument about simply removing some language will not straightjacket free expression is the most naive argument ive ever heard; allow Mr. Tocqueville to explain the concept of liberty to you:
Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.”
            ― Alexis de Tocqueville
“Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”
            ― Alexis de Tocqueville
“It is above all in the present democratic age that the true friends of liberty and human grandeur must remain constantly vigilant and ready to prevent the social power from lightly sacrificing the particular rights of a few individuals to the general execution of its designs. In such times there is no citizen so obscure that it is not very dangerous to allow him to be oppressed, and there are no individual rights so unimportant that they can be sacrificed to arbitrariness with impunity.”
            ― Alexis de Tocqueville

          • vonvervengarten

So society’s push to remove gay and black slurs is because of me? Go ahead and use them all the time, ever day and as much as possible. See if it’s just a random mom lodging a complaint against you.
And no, I’m not a liberal and you can look across most right minded news blogs for my comments. I use the same name in every location.

          • EastValleyConservative

Vonver actually only asked that you and other consider not using the R word. She explained that it is hurtful to folks in her shoes. She explained that it bothers her enough to speak out about it. Beyond that, I don’t think there was a lot of personal attacking. Certainly, your comment that she is not the right type of conservative is WAY over the top. This crusade of ours to end the R word is not about who we hate. It is about who we love and why we love them. You don’t have love our kids, like our kids, help our kids, think about our kids, or waste one iota of your life in concern for our kids. JUST PLEASE, don’t hurt them. It generally pisses us off.

          • EastValleyConservative

Then you are not reading her entire posts Dennis. First, my comment was never in support of Anne, second, I never held out support for the word, and finally, she didn’t express hurt at that, she proceeded to eventually claiming that I also use racial slurs, gay slurs, and she indeed did attack me. While I am sure it may appear to you that this is where it went—-she personally attacked me and repeatedly failed to respond to those attacks other than to heap on more attacks and false accusations. My comment was NEVER in support of this. She continued on and refused to own up to this. So while I understand your position, understand that this is NOT where she is coming from. Her schtick was to go after someone, and it was me. While I mentioned her son three times in a positive manner, she ignored it and went on to state more falsehoods. Therefore, von’s goal was to go on a personal attack—-period. Read ALL of her posts please. I can appreciate your response completely–but people who are not reading what she has said are thinking she was being attacked. WRONG. I will not put up with a vile troll like Von. The fact that she failed to respond to the mention of her son tells me she doesn’t in fact have one.

          • vonvervengarten

            “Seriously? It’s hate speech now?”
I think most people would infer that it pisses you off that someone is calling out Ann Coulter and her word usage.
Unless I’m wrong and you are upset by her word usage…in which case you agree with me.

          • http://amandakmelson.wordpress.com/ GreenEyedGal

@vonvervengarten:disqus No, retard (as in stupid, obtuse, slow or ineffective in some way), most people wouldn’t infer that it pisses off @not4thegimmeparty:disqus that someone is calling out Ann Coulter on her word usage. It’s defining words you don’t like as “hate speech” that pisses off @Not4TheGimmeParty. You’re purposely being obtuse, refusing to admit that your reaction is based solely on your feelings and has nothing to do with facts. You are the people our Founding Fathers feared most when they added the Bill of Rights to the Constitution. Thank God they had the foresight to include the First Amendment so this country would conceivably be protected from people like you.

Here we go again—you refuse to acknowledge your infantile and fake attack on me, so now you accuse (yet again) that I prefer to use the word. I suggest (highly suggest) you do some introspection von. You are off your rocker and have a rage problem. At each turn and twist you make up a new “fact” in your runaway imagination. Please go away.

          • Judith Lewis

My son had muscular dystrophy and died from it. That said, his friends called him “crip” and you know what? He laughed and called himself Crip. You see, he had a sense of humor about his condition. He was able to laugh at himself and he helped me to be able to laugh with him. We had enough to be sad about. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me unless they are slanderous, in which case, I can sue your ass!

          • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

A person with muscular dystrophy has typically a full metal capacity. Intellectual delays are a bit different. You may be fine with the tag of Crip. Intellectually, your son and you realize that the physical condition does not define all that you son was. Now try to imagine my DS daughter trying to logically and reasonably understand why people would be mocking her for the way she looks, the way she talks, the fact that she LOVES some of the same things others age left behind years ago. “Hey you little retard” is probably not something she will fully grasp, but she will know that for some reason it wasn’t nice, it did not feel good, and she is different, lesser, that other kids.

In other words, as the father of a “retard”, I will NEVER let that evil remark go unchallenged. It is not about politics, economics, religion, social norms, or what anyone is comfortable with because of what the dictionary says…………….It is about doing what I can to let the world know that there is much more to my daughter than a disability.

          • Judith Lewis

First of all, I am very sorry about your daughter. Having had the privilege of knowing some DS kids, I know, first and foremost she is a very loving, sweet child. DS people are usually delightful people who give more than they take in this world. I have never met a DS person that I didn’t fall in love with. I know as a parent you are heartbroken for her and for yourself. That’s how I felt about my son. You worry about what will happen in the future and as a caring father you want to protect her because you feel that’s all that is in your power.
Dennis, your daughter is NOT a retard and will never be. She’s probably the smartest, wisest person in the room. She possesses the wisdom of the ages. I like to believe that God gave these people very recognizable physical characteristics because He wants the rest of us to know when we meet one of His angels. They are very special kids who, I believe, are here to teach us love. They exude love and radiate kindness.
There are a lot of ignorant, cruel people in this world and, from what I hear, a lot of them are in our schools. They will inevitably try to do their dirty work because their parents and teachers have let them down by fostering their bad behavior. I wish I could say that she will never be the victim of some of those people but we both know better, but one thing I have observed in the DS kids I have known is that they are very resilient and forgiving. She will teach you how to cope with the cruelty. You have but to listen. You will always wish she were “normal” and you will always worry about her but she will be your comfort. You will need to be watchful because she will love and trust everyone. Some won’t be trustworthy.
I understand that you might be angry, even with God. I was until I met someone who told me that my son chose his affliction in order to settle his karma so that he would not have to keep coming back to earth to advance his soul. I didn’t really understand what she was saying but somehow It comforted me to think that God would not do this to a child.
In the meantime, do not blame yourself. Your daughter chose you because she knew you would be exactly what she needs to help her on her journey because it is your journey, too.
I’m sorry to have rambled on but something just told me I needed to.

My point on Twitchy was that words are only what we make them. We cannot erase the words we don’t like because they will be replaced with other, maybe worse words. What the real lesson here is that we must guard against suppression of our right to free speech. Having said that, I must say that with such sacred and valuable rights comes the responsibility to teach our people how to use our rights and freedoms wisely.
We must teach kindness and respect to each other and to our children, not by banning words, but by instilling the knowledge and empathy to know how and when to use words. This is done by being good examples. How do our kids know that bullying is bad if we don’t teach them. My own father used to say that anyone who has to use curse words to make a point doesn’t have a good enough vocabulary. I agree with that but I must confess, there are times when a good cuss word just meets the requirement; although, I have never cursed anyone out and never will. I think that’s a safe statement in that I am seventy years old and in bad health.
The internet is turning us into rude, angry people and our kids are soaking it up like sponges and expanding on it. I have gotten some really hateful emails today. I wasn’t trying to be mean but I feel very strongly about our Constitution and fear even that we are throwing away our God-given rights away with both hands and we are losing our ability to communicate with each other and to come together as human beings. How can we expect our leaders to be any better than we are. The anonymity of the internet is giving us the sense that we can abuse people since they aren’t real. They’re avatars with no perceived feelings so we vent our own rage with no thought of the damage we might be inflicting on one another and we’re teaching it to our kids because we’re too busy to check to see what kind of damage they’re doing.
I wish you and your daughter the very best of all that is good in this world. I hope I have been some help to you and that I haven’t offended you in any way. That was not my intention.

          • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

Vonver…..BRAVO. This isn’t a conservative or liberal word. It is just a vulgar word no matter who uses it.

  • P Gustaf

It worked! People are talking about her, so she achieved her goal. What a sad attention whore she is.

Michelle: Why are you so upset? So it wasn’t a nice thing to call Obama, since when do you care? Hasn’t he been called a lot worse? It’s not like Coulter threatened to assassinate him, so why so sensitive all of a sudden? Retarded was a perfectly acceptable term until the PC police declared it otherwise.

    • vonvervengarten

Actually -Phil-, the r-word was a poor word choice. Third graders master the r-bomb to a most excellent level. Is a lying, manipulating, conniving, class warmonger someone with a low IQ? No. If someone is challenged they can’t help the way they are. Is Obama’s presidency just happenstance, he having no control over his choices? No. The PC police (that’s me today) and the vocabulary police (guess that’s me again) say that if we want to come across as intelligent, we shouldn’t be dipping into the third grade slang dictionary to make cogent and articulate points.

      • LAPhil

        vonvervengarten:
I don’t disagree with anything you said. All I’m saying is I think Michelle is overreacting. Anyone who is familiar with Ann Coulter knows how she is, so this shouldn’t really come as a shock that she would say something outrageous about the President.

        • vonvervengarten

But we don’t have to be sheep-like and stand for it. I tweeted Coulter myself, and obviously Michelle is taking her to task. The r-word isn’t shock talk anymore. People who are hurt by the r-word do not have a voice to defend themselves. If we made the effort to remove gay slurs and racial slurs, certainly removing “retard” isn’t going to straightjacket your ability to be expressive. You can be much, much more amazingly outrageous if you crack open a dictionary.

you guys do realize that the word “retard” has perfectly acceptable applications OTHER than referencing disabled people? quit saying “the r-word” like it is just like saying the n-word or something. i dont agree she should have called POTUS this, it displays a lack of class and, unfortunately (because i used to like her) lack of relevant commentary and intelligence. it hurts the conservative ticket and it casts a blanket shadow on conservatism at a time when we cannot be associated with stuff like this because of the smear job done by the msm. but its silly to start an uproar over a word that has applications alterior to the hate fueled ones.

Ugh, OK Matt, use the word in the tweet with one of it’s other meanings. The president is “slowing down” “moving slower”. ” I approve of Mitt Romney’s decision to be kind to the slow down/slow mover?

            Ya, that’s it, I’m sure.

listen, you’re as bad as the liberals. yes, she was speaking about his lack of intelligence. but she was not comparing him to actual handicapped people. just everyday, head in the clouds, stupid americans. retarded americans. i believe it is safe to say, and accurate at that, that there are citizens constantly emmitting retarded and stupid auras that have no legitimate disability. quit dissecting things like this.

Odd for twitchy to use the liberals they so frequently mock to attack a fellow conservative for saying something stupid. What Ann said was stupid, but to use Twitchy’s main targets (ignorant bleeding heart celebs) to make the point is pretty hypocritical.

    • vonvervengarten

Because standing up for people who are developmentally delayed is what? Wrong?
Twitchy gets the gold star today for putting people who cannot defend themselves ahead of politics.

      It’s nice to have standards.

I’m sure none of these people ever referred to Bush as a “retard”.

I really wish Ann would go away. She isn’t helping our case, she’s an embarrassment. She’s just another media whore that would say anything to be on TV.

  • vonvervengarten

Look at it this way…10% of the population include a member with a cognitive disability in their family. (census.gov) Two weeks before the election is “retard” what we want coming out of the right wing media?
    Think about it.

Obama said he bowled like someone from the Special Olympics. Remember? I do.

  • michael s

    to be expected.

someone is sure jealous. Ann Coulter is an American Hero, and had more best sellers then almost everyone else. Or maybe you need to remember PC means shutting people up and is unconstitutional.

Calling Ann Coulter a HERO proves you have NO idea what the word hero really means.

  • nubain4

OH No! Ann used her 1st amendment! Throw her prison! RETARDS!!!

  • Patriotic Patrick

Palin loses credibility when she denounces Obama for his “special olympics” comment and then remains silent on Coulter’s slur. And for the record, Obama apologized right after (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20266949,00.html). Coulter still hasn’t.

Ann used the word appropriately. If Obama acts and speaks like a retard then he must be a retard.

  • Stephanie Warren

I guess I’m mean spirited then when I call my computer retarded.
