That unlikely prospect is on the minds of some pundits and Twitter users today:

David Jackson, writing in USA Today:

Expect to hear more and more talk that one of the presidential candidates could win more votes — but lose the White House because the opponent wins the Electoral College.

As it stands now, Mitt Romney leads President Obama in the popular vote — 47.7% vs. 46.7% — according to the average of polls complied by the RealClearPolitics website.

But, according to averages of polls in individual states, Obama right now leads in those states with a total of 294 electoral votes, compared with 244 for Romney, according to RealClearPolitics.

Well, anything is possible, of course, but this outcome doesn’t seem likely. If Romney does well enough nationally to win the popular vote, he’ll probably win enough toss-up states (e.g., Florida, Virginia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, New Hampshire) to carry the electoral college, too.

Anyway, the rules are clear: Whoever wins the electoral college wins the election.

(It would be much more interesting if there is a tie in the electoral college. Very unlikely, of course, but theoretically possible.)

Obama wouldn’t have any mandate that way and maybe nothing worse will happen in the next 4 years

    • Just Another Guy

You forget his penchant to just write Exec Orders…..and Judicial Appts

      • Kent Vig

No I don’t. The reality is this could happen and I pray that nothing bad happens for 4 years because this jacka$$ in the whitehouse won’t know what to do

    • Maria

Ha! The whole country will cease to function if B.O. gets another term. We’ll be a Communist State then.

  • [email protected]

We need to take the Senate at a veto proof majority either way to contain the damage should that happen. This is why it is important to vote for Republicans for every single House, Senate, State seat… Damb even dog catcher. With a veto proof Senate we can contorl Oblah blah. If the worst were to happen

  • TrueBlue73

If so, it’s because of brain dead fools like this in swing states. SMH

  • Steven F

It would suck, but it’s happened before, most recently for GWB in 2000.

    • Maria

No, Florida proved he won fair and square.

      • DL

Bush did not win Florida. He and his brother stole Florida. My mother is a die hard bush fan and even she admits it.

        • Maria

Sure he didn’t. 😉 Any Republican who gets into office is always accused of something. Yet when a Democrat is accused of something he actually did, it’s dismissed.

  • Rob

Remember when Bush “STOLE!!!!1” the election?
Anyone who deems that Obama “stole” an election will be deemed racist because you can’t suggest a black man “stole” something.

  • Marcy Cook

Of course this could happen. Buckle up. It’s going to be a very bumpy ride if it does.

  • Dave Silva

The odds of a republican winning the popular vote and not winning the electoral college are slim to none simply because rural areas usually vote republican. It makes sense for a democrat because they can only win areas where they get to brainwash everyone.

  • Jack Deth

    Maybe in Bizarro World, David.

Here in Real World, Obama is going to lose HUGE!

Think about how badly Reagan destroyed Carter. Only more badly.

    • ML40

I hope you’re right! I think Romney can win but not by any huge landslide because America is not the same nation as it was 30 years ago. Its a nation where almost half the country wouldn’t mind living under a European styled socialistic democracy.
That being said.. maybe just maybe this election will be a wake up call for individual liberty and freedom where what you describe might be possible. So once again.. I hope you are right and that I am wrong.

    • libralady ♡

we pray that happens.obama won’t leave his toys and presidential lifestle willingly.

  • Dio Heerai

DENIAL is not just a river in Egypt for liberals these days.
After Monday there will be no “game changer” left for Obama , all they will have left is dirty tricks which will be seen as DESPERATION and drop Obama lower in the polls …..I’ll let others finish the rest of this post

  • chrisknitz

If it did happen, and no way it will, do you think the left will jump on the “but Romney won the popular vote, he should be president” like they did when Gore “won” the popular vote? Nope!

  • bruce mercer

after all we are a federal republic of states that granted delegated powers to the national government. we are NOT a democracy

  • $30423294

Here is some advice for the President.

Focus on repairing the bridges you have burnt because the Barack Hussein Obama presidential library is going to be constructed much sooner than you had anticipated, and it will be expensive.

You have offended everyone in America with the exception of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood. Will they fund your library? No, they have used you sir, they will discard you.

You need to throttle back on your hateful little message and focus on your post-presidency legacy. To do that, you have to start acting with decency. Can you do that?

    • TomJB

There won’t be a BHO Library. It will be an iTunes download so you can take it anywhere you want to take it. And Queen Elizabeth II can update the speeches she already has!

      • DrSamHerman

The exterior architecture for his presidential library is already available:

        • my preciousss!!

lol.. thought the link was for real!

        • Greg Kenrick

          funny stuff!!

  • MichaelCaldwell

Don’t believe the hype folks. Romney will win. Its really that bad out there. Go buy some gasoline then come talk to me :/

  • Maria

The Electoral College doesn’t meet up until December, so no one knows for sure.

  • CalCon10

This race shouldn’t even be close.

Blame George W. Bush. He let the Democrat radicals run roughshod over him for 8 years. Ditto their enablers in the media. Nobody ever took them on, slapped them down, made them retreat. Now, they are virtually omnipotent.

I don’t think Romney will win. RIP, USA.

    • disappearing moderate

Don’t despair. The economy alone is enough to sink the O team. Don’t believe that foreign policy isn’t an issue. My “mom, make me a tuna sandwich’ daughter and her “he’s in a band” boyfriend don’t clutter their heads with anything outside pop culture, and they both instantly saw the consulate attack as the work of terrorists. The date was a give away for even the least aware. They also immediately saw the administration’s blame the video ploy as a political cover up. Americans are not as stupid as MSNBC pundits seem to think they are.

      • nc

I agree with you, dm. I work with a group of uninformed, mostly left-leaning people who barely even know who’s running. But only in the last week or so about four or five of them have asked my opinion about the debates. And yes, they know I’m conservative. I’m not saying I’ve turned any of them (that I know of), but I think at least two of them seemed very open to what I was saying.

DM, your example points out the difference between the brainwashed Koolaid drunks (i.e. BHO’s base) and the turned off, tuned out uninformed. The latter just needs something to grab their attention and they get it.

  • Rob Stevely

How great would it be if Romney wont the popular vote and got CA’s electoral vote….

  • stuckinIL4now

Obamuh must be losing really big for the Demsperation to have gotten so low as to inspire this fantasy. Obamuh may be lucky to win Illinois.

  • DrSamHerman

So how do the Democrats reconcile their crying over Bush v. Gore in 2000 and their attempts to end the electoral college system with this predicament? They can no longer claim Obatears has a “mandate” in that case.
