His full statement:

“As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault.  In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year.  Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

“I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue.  But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.

“But I also believe that this election is about a wide-range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren.  We’ve had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs.  That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats’ failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead.”

Oh my: Missouri GOP Senate nominee says victims of ‘legitimate rape’ don’t get pregnant; Update: ‘A Torricelli situation’?

Some Republicans say Rep. Todd Akin should step down; Updated

Sen. Claire McCaskill condemns Rep. Todd Akin’s ‘legitimate rape’ comments

Update:  Akin acknowledges that rape can result in pregnancy:

  • omicron123

Appreciate the mea culpa, Akin, but this is the kind of “misspeaking” that nobody – except maybe Biden – can recover from. Good-bye.

    • http://twitter.com/markguinn Mark Guinn

They could find him naked in Springfield with hooker at the Kum and Go I’d still vote for him

      • Ritamalik

Like Democrats don’t have their own cast of characters whom they keep reelecting no matter what! Charlie Rangel is a great example of that.

        • jsbw

Charlie Rangel never used the term, “legitimate rape.” You’re actually gonna VOTE for this guy?

          • Ritamalik

Charlie Rangel didn’t say “legitimate rape”. He did something much worse! He broke the law! By the way Democrats have Bill Clinton in their fold! Remember how every Dem defended him almost to the death when a whole host of women came forward and accused him of rape and sexual harassment? Remember how Paula jones and Jennifer Flowers were the trailer trash according to Dems? Remember how Monica Lewinsky was treated? Remember how Bill perjured himself by lying under oath about “not having sex with that woman”? Remember how Dems said Bill was a good guy that shouldn’t be impeached?

Remember how Senator Ted Kennedy caused the death of Mary Jo Kopechne by driving their car off a bridge into the water while driving drunk and then he left her there to die instead of calling for help to try to save her? Remember how he didn’t even get properly punished and then continued his political career as if nothing happened? I believe all of those acts were much more detrimental to flesh and blood women than anything Akin ever said or done. Not to mention what those Dem politicians did were against the law! But yet these cast of criminal characters above constantly got the vote of the Democrats! This year Bill Clinton will be speaking at the Dem. convention even!!
Now having put some sense of proportion into this issue by comparing Democrats random criminality with Akin’s stupid comment I now proceed to tell you that I would MUCH prefer if the GOP replace this guy as soon as possible because I don’t want his silly comment to become a distraction and drag on our wider campaign and take attention away from Obama’s abysmal record. But if they eventually don’t replace him I would have voted for him against Clair Mccaskill any day if I were a Missouri resident. But I am not!

  • http://www.lidsamy.com/ Lidsamy

Good job. He acknowledges he slipped over his words, affirms his strong pro life position and reaffirms this election is about the economy . Well done. Just like Dana said!

    • http://www.facebook.com/sjenson Scott Jenson

Misspeaking is accidentally saying “Tuesday” instead of “Wednesday”. But he didn’t just slip, he said: “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down” This is just OMG-I-can’t-believe-you-believe-anything-like-that type of jaw dropping wrong. It shows a DEEP misunderstanding of biology and rape.

I understand Amy that you are anti-choice, that’s your right and I don’t want to attack your beliefs here. The point isn’t pro/anti choice, it’s about saying something so outrageous that it undermines your intellectual character.

It is appropriate to react strongly to this, it was a very very wrong thing to say.

      • CHHR

I couldn’t agree more. This isn’t about choice and it’s time we
talked reality of a horrible outcome where women & children are permanent
victims. How about we stop deaminizing women and start holding perverts
accountable? What a novel idea. Instead we cite a “study” with more holes than Swiss
cheese and comment on the “legitimacy” of rape. Please.
Justice? Talk to a young woman with the difficult choice of raising a child she never planned for and with little to no support. Trust me, I KNOW how the system treats such woman.
I was told today that “some rapes are not legitimate.”
So, the solution is to hold all women suffering under that litmus? Guilty until proven innocent? God, I am so angry! That chauvinistic thinking is EXACTLY why so many rapes go unreported. Yet we have the audacity to talk the rhetoric about “protection” of all life and fail to protect women from perverts? I just don’t get it.

        • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ Penny Robinson Fan Club

Why is no-one speaking of the other side of the equation — harsh criminal punishment for rapists?

          • CHHR

That’s my point. Unfortunately though, and according to Akin, we must first legitimize the act before we can talk about what to do about a pervert that commits that act. Yea, that’s an all understood code word for blame the woman, boys will be boys BS.
Why do we have to always preface a bad act with a punnishing requirement? SHE isn’t the one to have committed a wrong, HE is. End of story.

@clairecmc Assault Rape Pregnancies Are Rare http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/492/26/

        • CHHR

Are you sayint that, because they are rare, those women deserve less consideration or an honest compasionate outcome?
May be my daughter is rare, but last time I checked, her son deserved nothing less than any other fatherless child. What do we tell him? That his mother was not legitimately raped and that he was the result of a consensual act for which there is no daddy only a sperm donner?

        • CHHR

so? What the hell does that have to do with the reality that most rapes go unreported, many children suffer from familial rape that isn’t even recognized within the family, and suffer daily with the stigma that holds them, not the pervert, accountable and fail to report. The logic of some rapes are not legitimate or that the issue of pregnancy is rare does not even come close to justifying callus remarks like that.

          • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ Penny Robinson Fan Club

Imagine you have just turned 16. Mother calls you in and tells you, “Daddy isn’t your father. I conceived after getting assaulted in the parking lot of the grocery store, the man who did it was never caught. I don;t know who your real father is.”

            Q. – Is your first reaction going to be, “Mom, what were you thinking, you should have aborted me, now I don’t want to live anymore.” ?

          • CHHR

Please, that has to be one of the most stupid of comments and
doesn’t even come close to the reality of de-legitimization Akin surmised of someone in that situation.

How about you imagine our horror to have that exact situation
come up in our family. I supported our daughter in what SHE chose to do… not your judgmental BS position, HERS. Yes, she kept that baby despite society’s thrust for scummy gossip. She chose life and for her decision, 2 state senators, 1 congressman, 1 local representative, the local police, and the ANG all quickly
threw her under the bus. We have a full out investigation that substantiate her horrors, and NOTHING, not even a case file at the Senate as required by law. My frustration? Simple, rather than get off the plateau of platitudes and arm chair punditry, we actually CHOOSE to ignore a growing problem in our society all for votes.

WE paid for the entire pre-natal, delivery, and now his upbringing… the pervert that donated his unworthy sperm? Yea, we’re still looking for him too. You see, he was allowed to just go about his business as if nothing ever happened. Worse, every one of those bastards that threw her under the bus are on queue to be re-elected or appointed. An entire family made destitute just so a few chowder heads could sweep the tough stuff under the
carpet and never deal with it to save their own backsides. But, from your comments, that’s just fine with you.

Now you pinhead, go back and actually read what I said. I was
horrified by his use of the term “legitimate rape.” As if my
daughter, as rare as her situation may be, was not legitimate. So let me rephrase my point: I don’t give a rat’s tail how rare, ANY rape deserves consideration in your ideological pontification
so closely related to the BS we hear from the left all the time. So why not try it again, go ahead, tell me, what WOULD you tell not only YOUR daughter, but YOUR grandchild… or would you have proven to be the coward you seem to be and made sure that there would have been neither for you to have to deal with?

Misspoke? Obvious he doesn’t know how to respond. If he actually

Assault Rape Pregnancies Are Rare http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/492/26/

    • jsbw

What, exactly, is your point? No, really?

      • Guest

Finally, factor in what is certainly one of the most important reasons
why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that’s psychic trauma. Every
woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle.
To get and stay pregnant a woman’s body must produce a very
sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a
part of the brain that is easily influenced by emotions. There’s no
greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an
assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation,
        fertilization, and implantation.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ Penny Robinson Fan Club

How are you going to define marital rape? As strictly as non-marital sexual assault? If my wife is asleep and I reach over and caress her bosoms, have I committed sexual assault because she was not awake to consent to my touch? Or would you agree that there is a certain degree of “implied consent” within a marriage?

BTW, “implied consent” is a well-established legal principle; a boxer cannot sue another boxer for assault arising from a fight in a ring when rules are followed even if he hasn’t signed any waivers; he has implicitly consented to allow the other man to strike him. (/lecture)

So — do you agree there is implied consent to physical contact within a marriage, and how far does it or should it extend? Or should I go to jail for feeling up my wife while she’s asleep? It’s one or the other.

He ‘misspoke’ but he doesn’t clarify about what he misspoke.

Translation of his above words is:

    I misspoke.
I emphasize with rape victims and unborn babies.
We need to protect the vulnerable … the unborn babies.
He acknowledged that this issue is ’emotionally charged’ but he’s going to protect the babies (the only ones in this that he sees as truly innocent)
Reminds people he’s anti abortion and his opponent is not… then drops back to – this is a distraction we should be talking about the economy.

He never acknowledges that what he said was scientifically inaccurate. It is still the position he holds.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/L5N2BSJOHGTYRQM352ESJ37KMU Jen
