As Twitchy reported, Julie Boonstra says she lost the health insurance she liked and faces unpredictable out-of-pocket expenses for her leukemia treatment with her new insurance plan. For that grave offense against the sanctity of Obamacare, Dem Rep. Gary Peters branded Boonstra a liar and threatened the licenses of TV stations running an Americans for Prosperity ad featuring the Michigan mom.

War on Women, anyone?

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly says Peters, a Senate hopeful, “repeatedly” declined invitations to appear on her program to defend his indefensible attack on a cancer patient. He also refused to answer the door when Boonstra visited his home with this letter.

Looks like fired-up women make Peters tremble when he can’t hide behind his legal team.

Kelly hosted a panel discussion in which she smacked the cowardly Peters around for his shameful attack on Boonstra.

FORWARD! Comrades to your collectivist utopia! Where cancer patients are second class citizens to people getting their birth control paid for by someone else.

  • Dawn Crawford

I love Megyn!! Never miss her show

  • JeffWRidge

Strong, brave people like Boonstra and Kelly scare the crap out of lefties. Personally, I admire both of these women. They are fighting for our 1st Amendment rights, as well as our right not to be forced onto government controlled insurance. More power to them.

    • QueenB

Especially them being women. Liberals really don’t like us stand up for our rights types, unless the only right we’re interested in is abortion.

      • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

Ain’t that the truth. Maybe libs should stop calling themselves Pro-Choice.

      ” More power to them.”

This Peters cur must have been the picture of modern, manly Statesmanship hiding inside his house when this lady knocked on his door.

      Low-T is undoubtedly an understatement.

      • Jeff

I suspect that no T’s is probably more accurate.

        • Chris

No “B”s is more what I would go with….

          • QueenB

They’re obviously smaller than the ones this woman has! Go girl!

  • CR

The real question I think America would like answered here is whether Mitt Romney was responsible in any way for this women’s cancer like that other man’s wife he killed with his magic cancer-causing powers. The mainstream press would be sure to jump all over that story, whereas I am sure this one will go largely unreported.

    • NRPax

The power to cause cancer years down the road is apparently something the Mormon Elders have. It’s the real reason the government stopped sending out troops to kill them.

  • H50 ✓RAT

So glad that Kelly is covering this. The attacks on this woman are indefensible, they are not attacking the Koch brothers, the AFP or anything else…they are attacking her, they are calling her a liar. They are trying to shut her up so that others will not come forward, pure and simple.
Peters is a pathetic coward, hiding in his house, hiding behind his lawyers and hiding behind the prog mouthpieces like this gal. What a POS and so is anyone who supports or defends this bullying of a woman with terminal cancer. Just pathetic.

    • Humanary Stew

The left is truly waging a war on women with this attack on Boonstra and what is happening to Justina Pelletier.

      • H50 ✓RAT

Its just horrible how certain folks are being singled out for targeted abuse. Just breaks my heart reading some of these stories.

I guess the silver lining is that folks who were so sure that these things (and worse) couldn’t happen here are getting an eyeful and learning that it can and if not checked, will happen here. The bigger the government the smaller and less important the individual.

Her premium savings will cover what she will have to pay OOP.

Ive read the WaPo article and the Detriot News is to left wing to bother with.

          • WhoDat

            Ok, from the DN article:

“Boonstra was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago and relies on daily oral chemotherapy. In October, Boonstra was among an estimated 225,000 Michigan residents who received notices the health insurance they purchased on the individual market would be discontinued for not meeting new standards under the law. She said she was covered under a Blue Care Network private plan with a $1,100-a-month premium but low out-of-pocket costs.

Boonstra was dogged by technical difficulties on the federal health care exchange website and panicked she would be unable to keep her University of Michigan doctors and lifesaving treatment. Ultimately, she enrolled in a new Blue Cross Blue Shield plan through an agent where her premiums were cut in half at $571, but she pays higher out of pocket costs. She’s still seeing her U-M oncologist.”

          • H50 ✓RAT

Youd have done better to quote from the WaPo article as I already said that the Detriot News is to left wing to bother with. Try again and make a point using your words.

          • FreedomRecon

“but she pays higher out of pocket costs”….which the amounts are not yet known…which is exactly what she said….it’s the uncertainty now.

          • Renny

Do you comprehend that she is dying? She is fighting the cancer, but she is dying. She had insurance she liked. Why has the gov’t now forced her off her insurance onto an insurance that she doesn’t want? Why have they taken her freedom of choice away at a time when she is fighting for her life OR at any time? Period.

          • PatriotRG

she is obviously to stupid to know what is good for her according to commissar whocares

Exactly the whole point! People just overlook or don’t think, I’m not sure which it is, that this is a person dying! Every single day is precious! Why add to the misery?! Why break a promise to someone that if they like what they have they can keep it?! Why force more stress on someone in this situation?! It’s heartless to be doing this to anyone, but especially to people who are facing life and death situations.

          • PatriotRG

            bore off

          • carmenta

where does this say her lower premium will cover her higher OOP costs?

          • spqr2008

The problem is she faces much more variable out of pocket costs. Even if she saves all of that $7200 a year in savings on the premiums (doubtful with higher out of pocket costs), her monthly bills will not be predictable like they were before Obamacare. Using the same equability argument used to discount her story, I can argue that as a nation, we should not have federal income tax withholding from our paychecks, because we would pay exactly the same amount in taxes if we paid on April 15th as if we had the exact right amount withheld, right?

          • putthehammerdown

I get the Detroit News {see : Farmington, Michigan] and curiously, they are making no mention of what her total deductibles are, per year.
Now why do you suppose ‘that’ is ?
We do know that her per-visit deductible went from $20 to $50.
We also know that one of her many ‘needed’ drugs is no longer covered, at all.
Also, please note that like many other papers in this country, The Detroit News uses A P and McGlatchy News services extensively.

        • tops116 ✓Quipper

“her new plan seems to be the exact same”

“Seems?” That’s an interesting word from someone who keeps insisting everything he has said is 100% true.

And you keep sidestepping this important fact that this poor woman is in this situation because Obama mislead America about his “signature piece of legislation.”

        • DBNinKY

“Overall costs”? HA! Do you realize out outrageously expensive “out-of-pocket” costs are for cancer treatments? I only hope she has the assets of a liberal Democrat to help cover these new “overall costs,” because she’s likely to need them – thanks to O-care!

    • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

She is less upset about the cost than the unpredictability of those costs. With a $6500 deductible, more than half of her annual outlays could be in a month or two. It was not the total cost that she complained of but the unpredictability of the costs. She is also not quite certain what may or may not be covered under the new plan.

      • H50 ✓RAT

There is also the issue of the requirement under Obamacare to prescribe generics first. This causes problems because they are not necessarily as effective as the name brands and have different fillers that can interact badly with other meds or allergies. For example, my generic migraine meds as less effective and cause a severe rash reaction because of one of the fillers. They are cheaper but bring their own set of problems.
Im not even sure if experimental cancer medications are covered.

The key issue here is and has always been, that her claim was that because of the disruption of her insurance coverage, she is facing a tremendous uncertainty in her treatment, out of pocket costs, security and availability. Whether or not it all washes out to be ‘equitable’ costs and coverage in the end is mildly interesting, she might not live long enough to know either way.

        • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

“The greatest injustice is to treat unequal things as if they were equal.” – Aristotle

        • Humanary Stew

Not only that, some medications are not covered if they are not on the lists So that means more money out of pocket.

          • H50 ✓RAT

Some of those meds are horrendously expensive too.

        • Loren Jon

Great point also! I have a generic I can’t take either because of a filler and have to use the brand name. My doctor understood this but my pharmacist had trouble understanding it. There are so many things about this that people just don’t understand or don’t want to. There are so many things to consider! It’s her body, her health, her finances, her situation and no one knows better than Julie what she needs and what’s best for her.

          • H50 ✓RAT

It pretty common with the generics from what I understand. Trying to get a refill for my regular med after the bad reactions from the generics has been a nightmare. Its been two months and its still being argued about, the new regs for the doctor to justify the original meds are apparently too complicated for the doctor and provider to understand and be able to justify.
So in the meantime, I have to take twice as much of the generic and break out in the most horrendous body rashes. Going without is simply not an option.

The patient and doctor know what is the best treatment. Not the government and not an HMO. Period.

But hey, Harry Reid says that all the negative stories about Obamacare are just lies, so there is that. (eye roll)

          • Loren Jon

Especially when it comes to migraines! I hear ya. Imitrex works great for mine but does a big number to my tummy. I’m sorry you have to endure that just to stop the torture of a migraine. What stupidity that an obvious allergy to it isn’t justifiable! That should be reason enough! The patient and doc know best… exactly.

    • Clete Torres

Bullshit. Even you aren’t this stupid to believe a lie like this.

      Or are you?

    • Elizabeth

She liked her plan. She couldn’t keep it. She doesn’t like her new plan. Her choice was taken away from her. Get that? The government took away her CHOICE! Can it be any more clear than that?

      • Hey, That’s Pretty Good

WhoDat’s a liberal. The only choice they believe women are allowed is whether or not to abort their baby. Everything else WhoDat believes the government is entitled to force on you whether you like it or not.

    • RL from PRNY

I’ll accept your points about the cost/OOP at face value. Let’s agree her annual cost will remain the same, and that she can figure out how to get through a front-loaded budgetary problem early in the year. Here’s where I take issue:
I have a family member with a chronic condition, for whom I am responsible. Treatment continuity is paramount to managing the condition, as it is with cancer. This lady had a plan that cost roughly $13k per year–which I would guess is a fairly comprehensive plan given her coverage and pricetag. Why cause a very sick woman all this uncertainty, all this upheaval, when we were told that we could keep our plans and our doctors? The last thing a seriously ill (and previously covered) person needs to worry about is whether she can continue with her treatment uninterrupted. Her doctors happen to participate in her new plan–but surely this will not be the case for all patients who had plans and doctors they liked and were using for treatment.

This particular lady suffered tremendous hassle, for absolutely no benefit. The stated point of Obamacare was to get the uninsured affordable coverage. What did this accomplish?

One of many frustrations with Obamacare that is illuminated by this case is that there were millions of people with policies that were perfectly fine for their needs, and now, suddenly, the fed gov’t has outlawed them. Regular folks are left to deal with the aftermath, often–but as you pointed out, not always–at a higher cost or lower quality of provider.

      • Ronald Green

It isn’t just ‘often’. The CBO ( I think it was them) has estimated that 2/3’s would see premium and out of pocket costs go up. So it’s the greater majority. Just so WhoDat can worship his god Obutmuch.

    • Thale Taxurfeet

“Her premium savings will cover what she will have to pay OOP.”

You know how exactly? Are you keeping her books? Did Ms. Boonstra sign a HIPAA waiver allowing you privy to her records?

    • tops116 ✓Quipper

I’m surprised you’re not trying to claim she’ll actually save $2,500 per month. I’m not surprised that you keep insisting you know best (which given just your previous support of Obamacare, you don’t), that you’re once again demonstrating hypocrisy on the War on Women, and that you’re sidestepping what this topic is all about.

Peters refuses to directly confront Boonstra or to defend himself on a show that won’t kiss his ass. If Boonstra were “misleading” people as you keep claiming, then Peters would have no reason to hide in his home when she comes knocking on his door. He’s a gutless coward, and he knows he’s wrong. And we all know that you know it, too. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be trying to change the subject.

Face it, Obamacare is a failure. This story is just the latest example of that. None of your attempts at spin or your pathetic “I know what’s best for her, so shut up” blathering can change that fact.

    • PatriotRG

She wants to carry on with her old plan. Your point is basically she is to stupid to know whats good for her. what part of , she doesnt want the ACA crap dont you get ? She wants the certainty of fixed cash flows, she can budget easier.

But heaven forbid anyone should take Sandra Fluke to task for putting out “her take on the facts of the case” in HER instance– that would be a War Against Women, because it’s “P***y Politics,” i.e., a woman’s reproductive system involved. Here, because this could as easily have happened to a man, you don’t have the same sort of issues involved, and so, a bullying tactic used to attempt to shut an “inconvenient woman” up can be excused, it seems. And the fact that she’s backed by the “(*Bwahahahahahaha!*) E-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-vil Koch Brothers!” makes it all the more unforgivable for her. Back to basics here… Dick-Peters won’t go on Fox or answer his door… All of the demon-crapic qualifications to be a lib senator.

  • sam michaels

    Keep on kickin’ butt, MEGYN!!

  • putthehammerdown

    Peters is known as a serial liar in this area. {S/E Michigan}
When he ran against ‘Rocky’ in 2010 he created a false picture/false associations of & about Rocky and when all was said and done, he won by mere few hundreds of votes.
He will lie, cheat and lie some more to get what he seeks. His historical record speaks for itself.

    • stuckinIL4now

Wait, lemme guess, those few hundred votes were from ballots found in the trunk of a car?

  • bobbyt1964

She’s right: It IS NOT affordable. Don’t believe me? Try this: Imagine you have a car payment of $500 per month, which equals $6000 per year. Your lender tells you that your 4 year-old loan is being replaced with a new plan under which you will still pay $6000 per year, but the monthly amounts will vary wildly and erratically. You now will never know beforehand if your next month’s payment will be $0, $6000, or anywhere in between.
I can’t imagine any sane person choosing to run their finances this way.

  • right_on

Peters IS the definition of a pusillanimous misogynist. Too afraid to answer the door, when it is someone he attacked wants a face to face? (But he’ll fight for you, Michigan?) This neanderthal is only concerned with HIS longevity…his political longevity. I’d say “shame,” but we all know modern progressive troglodytes are shameless.

  • David E. Melton

HAHAaa, it was the Koch bros, how lame is that?

  • Citizen_Jerry

    He didn’t answer because he’s a coward.

  • Loren Jon

As if it wasn’t enough that she has to deal with leukemia and stress over her insurance, but also attack the woman?! Add to her stress which will no doubt further compromise her health?! Shameful! That is absolutely shameful! Julie is in my prayers along with so many others in her situation.

  • QueenB

After reading this thread, I would like to apologize to my fellow travelers for ever thinking and trying to convince you that WhoDat is in the beginning of a transformation to conservatism. I now clearly see he is an Obama stooge and will say absolutely anything, smear anyone, in an attempt to not see the BS that flows from Obama’s mouth. Hana, I will accept your toaster upside my head for sticking up for this POS. Please be gentle. lol

  • Dan Abbett

There are no limits to the depth of the depravity to which the left will descend to win the argument or destroy their opposition. Some say we must not stoop to their level. How do we defend our freedom and our dignity if we insist on following the Marquis of Queensbury rules when faced with this kind of barbarism?

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

Why, here’s the proof that Julie was lying. In fact, they’re all lying because, uh… Koch Brothers and stuff.

Hey, if you can’t trust Harry Reid, who can you trust?

This sums up the Left’s defense of Obamacare in so many ways, it’s scary. It’s also idiotic, but we’ve all come to expect that from people who insist Obamacare was a good idea.

  • JohnHerald

Truth is usually a pretty good defense. The truth is Julie Boonstra is a liar. Her premiums actually went down under ObamaCare, plus she was able to keep her doctor. While she may have the 1st Amendment right to lie to her heart’s content, her behavior is reprehensible.

  • yourmamatoo

    Harry Reid is in denial.
He knows the stats. He is deflecting from th failure of Obamacare – aka – The Hindenburg.
Tha is why Obama , his Adm , refuse to post th actual # of bought & paid for policies.

  • GUalbanian

Her well-being is now jacked by the ACA due to the fact that her cancer treatments that were once covered may now not be approved for treatment. There is no certainty in this cobbled-together, intellectually bereft government insurance plan…

  • Charles Kunold

My mom died of cancer after a brutal 13 year battle in 1982. if Peters had talked to her like that? That door would only slow me down. A idiot like him has no business running for the Senate. What’s he going to if he opponent “lies” about him? Get them audited by the IRS? This fool should be removed from office and charged with being butt ugly and a thug as well.

  • Oysteria

I don’t see any lie there told by Ms. Boonstra. The point that really got me was Ms. Boonstra’s claim that due to a provision in Obama care she lost her current coverage. And the shill there in front of Megan thought a good rebuttal to throw out there was a claim that she “may” have lost her insurance anyway?

If the lawyers want to validate the facts presented in the ad, then the facts are all that need to be proven – what could have or might possibly have happened is irrelevant.

At a point in her life when there is much uncertainty, she is thrown for a loop by self-proclaimed do-gooders who now want her to shut up and assert their meddling was better for her than she could do for herself.

  • Oink Trotters

I know of no lawyers adjudicating Ben Affleck’s testimony to Congress for facts. I suppose it’s because Batman knows his sh*t.

  • Payton Manning

This is a lamp that I’ve found useful for eluding the dark and despotic march of most of mankind:
