editor in chief Erick Erickson took to Twitter to announce that he’ll be filling in for Rush Limbaugh over Christmas.

More via Erickson’s Facebook page:

I know it may sound silly, but I’ve only ever had one so called life goal. I always let God surprise me. Life is more fun that way and less prone to disappointment. But there has been one thing I have wanted to do since I was in college. Just one. And now I’m going to get to do it — spend three hours behind the golden EIB microphone.

Glad I got that gallbladder mess taken care of quickly. I’ve got two weeks to heal up to be ready.

To quote Uncle Joe, that’s a big effin’ deal.

Congrats, Erick!

  • John

I guess he’ll do in a pinch when Mark Steyn isn’t available.

    • thetreyman

Steyn is my favorite guest host on the EIB Network.

      • NCRelite

Steyn actually got me into listening to Rush

      • lukuj

        Mine too,

    • snowleopard (the true one)

      I prefer Steyn as well.

    • Fairfax51

I think Steyn is everybody’s favorite guest host, but he recently got married and has a singing career, so he isn’t as available as he used to be.

  • gary4205

Rush likes to give these idiots a chance I guess. Erickson is as phony as the day is long So is “Red State”

Where’s Thomas Sowell, or Water Williams? Hell, Mark Simone!

    • san rafael blue

I like Mark Simone, he’s the ultimate Radio Man, who knows how to produce a program, but he’s usually not available. Thomas Sowell is also good. Walter Williams can be good but he sometimes gets stuck, either in the classroom giving oneway seminars about the rube-Goldberg of economics, or Walter may get too focused on the past. I have sympathy that he misses his wife.

      • Hot_wings

Doesn’t Simone fill in for Mark Levin sometimes.?

    • Jon

Simone’s over at WOR in New York, which will be Rush’s station as of Jan. 1, when the contract with WABC expires and Clear Channel moves him over to the station they bought last year. Simone moved to ‘OR last year, so you’re more likely to hear him as a fill in for Limbaugh after the first of the New Year than during the upcoming Christmas holiday break.

    • luvntheBIGsites

One thing is for sure… “gary4205” will not be guest hosting the Limbaugh program anytime soon. 😛

Tune in and listen before you pass judgment people.

      • Emma Roosevelt

No need as we already have a few hundred thousand words to read and a few hundred hours of tape to watch to know he isn’t worth any additional time.

      • Jill

Whereas I agree with giving people a chance, Erikson is often a bit too milquetoast for core audience. His condescension for views that vary from his own are a bit off-putting as will.

    • Clete Torres

      Dr Benjamin Carson.

    • ozconservative

Maybe G Gordon Liddy could come out of retirement. I used to enjoy listening to the “G-Man”.

    • AmericanMom

I probably won’t listen either. If it’s not Steyn substituting, I have other things to do. It’d be cool if someone like Ted Nugent got to host, or Sarah Palin.

      • Chase Crosby

You know he has several fill in hosts over the Christmas break, and I would bet that Steyn does a day or two. I’m a big fan of Doug Urbanski myself.

        • Clete Torres

I like Urbanski as well. I do like Steyn the best though, if The Real Deal isn’t available.

          • Chase Crosby

I think we all enjoy Steyn the most, lol. But Rush always picks a host that he knows will keep the numbers up.

        • nc ✓s & balances

          Urbanski is surprisingly good.

Of course, Steyn rocks it every time.

        • AmericanMom

Urbanski is one I would listen to. Mark Belling doesn’t hold my interest.

      • E Quilibrate

Next to Steyn, Palin or Nugent would make my day, Good call.

        • AmericanMom

Thanks. I was never a fan of Ted’s music, but I am a fan of his mindset when it comes to being a conservative.

I’m not trying to sound anti-senior citizen (I am one), but I believe some of the senators and congressmen should retire and leave the job to people with skills to surf the net and research things on their own, without the aid of staff or advisors. It’s not the same world as when some of them entered politics years and years ago.

      • lukuj

What I love about radio is that I can listen while I do other things😀

        • AmericanMom

That depends for me – if someone like Sean Hannity begins arguing with a liberal, I can’t listen to that crap. It’s like have a fight in your own kitchen or living room. Mark Levin comes on too darned late in my area, so I have to podcast it the next day when it becomes available.

    • Fairfax51

  • Jefferson Tea Party

    Sorry, I can’t stand Erickson. I’ll pass.

  • Janice LEE

  • John

Well, the general consensus so far from the comments is that the undocumented guest host (Mark Steyn) is the favourite. We want Steyn, we want Steyn…

    • Clete Torres

      From Ice Station (something).

      • helena handbasket

        Ice Station EIB!

        • Clete Torres

          That’s it!

    • SFfam

I’m not understanding all the Steyn love. He about drives me crazy when he is on. I guess I don’t really enjoy any of the guest hosts, but he gets stuck on something and……… on and on and on and on he goes.

  • NeoKong

    Erick Erickson on Rush’s show?
    WOW really…?

  • san rafael blue

I’ve never heard Eric host or boast at great length. So, can the Boy talk, is he a mumbler, or will he brick up the hour with numerous interviews? I hope he’s not like Mark Steyn, who while pleasant and quick on his little British feet, Mark spends way too much time laughing at his own jokes and long winded stories.

  • AmericanMom

Mark Steyn is the best substitute host, The good thing about Erick Erickson (not familiar with him) is that we won’t be subjected to a week of “best of” shows.

    • Axelgreaser

Steyn Rocks! And I believe its free association off of minimal notes. My gripe is you cannot post his visits off the Rush site :( Not familiar with this guy, but I’ll take my cue from Joe W. (below), cuz I hate a Palin hater.

  • Guest

I’ve tried listening to guest hosts. I gave up and now I just wait for Rush to get back. It’s just not the same without El Rushbo.

    • JubaDoobai!

The only one worth listening to these days is Steyn. Walter Williams was also a fun Conservative listen. There used to be a Mark something or other, not Belling if Davis, some guy from the northwest. He used to sound good but I heard him on his own show and he’s as loosey-goosey as a lot of the hosts.

      • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

        Let’s not forget the late Tony Snow, and Roger Hedgecock, who gave America conservative tingles as Rush fill-ins way back when… Jawamax 8<{D}

  • H50 ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Erickson is pretty good, he might rival Steyn as a guest host.

    • Corey Dennison

IMHO, Steyn should be the heir-apparent to el Rushbo. I always look forward to hearing Steyn. Erickson seems a little on the GOP establishmentarian side (Red State always seemed a little too Palin-hatey). Will reserve final judgement until I actually hear him though.

      • H50 ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Steyn is my favorite sub, I really like the way he looks at things. You’re right that Erickson is GOP establishment, but he provides a different perspective that is valuable too.

I don’t care for the Palin bashing at all. We can all have different points of view to arrive at the same goal. The only time I get really irked with him is when he makes it personal towards her.

Argue the ideas don’t belittle the person giving them.

Either way, if he steps on his meat, not a doubt in my mind that Rush’s listeners will put him in his place in short order.

  • junkbondtrader41

Mistake, Rush. Erickson is a tool, untalented, unpleasant (IMO) and not well thought of within the movement.

    • Arkuy The Great

Rush does not run a radio show with an eye toward benefiting any particular movement. He will run with whoever will generate audience interest and keep his advertising space adequately valued. You don’t build a radio empire worth half a billion dollars by strictly hewing to an ideology.

      • Mark81150 Never/Trump/Hillary

True… Rush is no purist, and that’s why he gets the love of the wide spectrum within the base.. He will stick to what we all agree on, and avoid subjects that just separate us when we have to be united… His need to expand his audience, while at the same time entertaining and educating over 20 million people happens to work for all our mutual benefit…

I doubt anyone but Rush could hold it all together for so long..

and I suspect my avatar and ideological Godfather would have greatly liked Rush..

I do admit, while I enjoy Steyn a lot… Erikson is not a very good choice, he’s mean spirited and hateful to those conservatives and libertarians who don’t agree in lockstep with him.. we don’t need our own Obama styled pundit, a guy who divides rather than brings us together..

  • Horatio Hornblower

    Let Bill Whittle guest host

  • Emma Roosevelt

I really hope the ratings tank with Erickson on the mic. The guy is one of the least supportive of discussing issues or the direction of the GOP I’ve ever encountered. It literally is his way or banned…

  • JubaDoobai!

Rush has affection for Sarah Palin; Eric Erickson does not. Let’s hope he keeps his contempt for her off the airways. I’d far prefer Mark Steyn because he is knowledgeable, insightful, and witty. Erickson is not very Conservative, IMO. He’s full of himself and arrogant. It would be interesting to see if he brings his nasty Red State attitude to his dealings with Rush’s callers to whom Rush is notoriously and unfailingly polite.

    • Clete Torres

He’d never be asked again, that much is certain.

      • Mark81150 Never/Trump/Hillary

I expect Rush’s leash on him is very very short…. one disastrous show.. he’s done.. and I expect Rush warned him about bashing other conservatives,, Rush isn’t going to let some begging hack ruin what he’s built..

You can bet Rush will be listening intently..

  • irishgirl91

Really happy for him, but in the absence of Rush, Steyn rules.

  • Nan231

Come on Rush, where are the women?

    • nc ✓s & balances

Can you imagine Palin hosting a show? Has she ever done one?

      • Nan231

        Unlikely, but there are others.

      • GaryTheBrave

Didn’t she used to be on the radio when she was still in ID?

        • nc ✓s & balances

          Don’t know. Anyone?

        • helena handbasket

She used to be a local TV sports broadcast early, early on.

      • TexasMom2012

She has a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis on journalism. So I think she might be able to handle it. She has to have given hundreds of speeches and tons of press conferences. I don’t see why she wouldn’t do a bang up job especially with Rush’s crew to assist.

        • nc ✓s & balances

          Makes sense!

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

      You mean, like, SARAH PALIN? EXCELLENT IDEA for a sit-in host! Or Megyn Kelly, or Judge Jeannine Pirro! Jawamax 8<{D}

      • lukuj

Kelly has 3 young kids , a TV show of her own, and regular appearances on the Factor. When would she have time to be a substitute host, though I am sure she would be excellent?

  • Killer_bees

The only one “semi-qualified” guest host is Mark Levin. Although, Mark Steyn will do in a “pinch.”

    • narciso

Steyn can speak on music, history, film, any number of areas,

    • Osama0bama

I love Rush, and have listened to him since the first week he started his national show in August 1988. I used to work as a salesman and couldn’t stand to listen to music while traveling to accounts. But I don’t listen to him much anymore .. mainly because 12-3 is not a time I often get to listen. I DO listen to Mark Levin several nights a week though, and I agree that Levin should fill in for Rush occasionally. They talk to each other almost every week anyway.

      • helena handbasket

Why would a guy who does his own three-hour show nightly want to fill in for another guy with a three-hour show earlier in the day? Levin often makes the distinction that he’s not out to broadcast what other conservative hosts broadcast.

        • Jill

The chance to increase your audience by reaching new listeners is likely the rationale. Though many people, as the comments have shown, really aren’t enthused about Erikson so the effectiveness of this strategy might be found wanting.

        • Osama0bama

To be able to talk to a much larger audience that may not already be listening to his show. As to what he can say .. he and Rush are close personal friends whom also do business together. I’m pretty certain that Mark will have the freedom to say whatever he wants if he guest-hosted rush’s show.

      • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

        August first, 1988…I was riding out to Lon Island from Queens with my Grandmother, Uncle Sebastian, and Cousin Mike…BTW, Did you know Rush and HOWARD STERN Share a Birthday? (I think it’s February 4th?) Jawamax 8<{D}

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

I’d like to see Glenn Beck fill for Rush one day, or..SWITCH SHOWS FOR A WEEK! With the theme music and all!
GLENN:”The Pretenders..Hey Snerdley, this is kinda GROOVY!”
      RUSH:”Steven, right?”
STU:”Call me Stu, that’s what Glenn calls me..”
RUSH:”I should give you the week off, because I don’t have a writer, I have a ‘stack of stuff’…. But I’ll trust you to screen my calls, okay?”
      STU”Cool, Rush.”
      Jawamax 8<{D}

  • MJUdall

Please give the days you’re filling in so that I can remember to keep the radio off.

  • GaryTheBrave

Jim Quinn & Rose Tennant are no longer on the air in Pittsburgh. They could host one day. Todd Schnitt is in Tampa so he could host as well.

  • Steve in Katy

I find myself gravitating towards Mark Levin lately. He has that passion that Rush used to have. Plus, Rush is starting to stutter and stammer more and more, that is except when he’s not infomercialing Rush Revere or his tea. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rush. It’s just something has changed.

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    I hope Eric is up to the job, “cause that’s a BIG pair of shoes to fill… But I’m sure he’ll be at least up to Rush’s standards. Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Hannibal

I am sure that Erickson will bring the CNN perspective to the show.

  • graz

as long as he bashes the obama every ten minutes he’ll be just fine.
look forward to him for a change. maybe he can have the obama on as a guest
and take calls. I’d start calling now!

    • lukuj

Obama would have to know all the questions of callers ahead of time so he could prepare his lie, er answers. He would have a hard time disguising his contempt for anyone who would call or listen to Rush.

  • san rafael blue

We used to have Tom Sullivan out here near San Francisco. I loved his show. Sullivan would talk TO you, not AT you, or AT some imaginary straw man in the studio wearing an Obama mask. “They” took him away from us on 910am. Nobody asked me about it!
