Till I’m caught in the crossfire, that is…

(OK, so it’s Adam Savage saying it, and not the “Build Teamers”– but I reject that reality, and substitute my own…)

  • LuCha

    TSA. Nice.

    • Ben Bollman

Yeah, I bet the TSA was too busy groping a 80 year old grandma to notice an actual guy with a gun.

      • josh

So a TSA agent gets shot by a gunman and you think they didn’t notice? He/She could have just stopped a mass murder, so I’d wait for the facts to trickle out before more horseshit trickles out of your mouth. You really think this guy “slipped” through? Fire some rounds and you’ll get pretty far into a checkpoint at most secure places on earth.

        • Ben Bollman

Your failure to understand sarcasm and social commentary have been noted.

          • josh

Funny. Dead people. HA. Good time to make a point. I get your sarcasm, just don’t understand the timing. Dead American security personnel but since I don’t like the retard in office it’s funny?

          • Ben Bollman

Criticizing the TSA =/= making fun of a dead person.

            Know the difference.

          • Whinerssuk

Don’t make a sarcastic remark about the TSA because the “timing” is wrong, but using words like “retard” is okay. What a waste of oxygen you are.

          • Scott H

Do you enjoy wearing your ass for a hat? How do you go to the bathroom with an asshat? Keep shitting on yourself dumbass!

          • Ben Bollman

I don’t know, how do you people not get that making fun of the TSA the organization and the BS the government makes them do is not the same as making fun of a dead agent? This is basic comprehension people.

          • Scott H

Stop using circumstantial speech to “defend” yourself… You made fun of the TSA! How can you not get this?! You indirectly made fun of the dead agent by making a joke about “groping an 80 year old woman” instead of talking about the problem and giving a SOLUTION! Something you still have yet to do!

          • Ben Bollman

I’m not trying to offer a solution by making a sarcastic comment and I’m not directly or indirectly making fun of a dead agent. Get the hell over it and move on.

        • Carl McMinn

At least he’s not hiding behind “Guest” like some anonymous coward. Put your name on your criticism and you might have relevance. Fact is, the TSA does NOTHING to keep anyone safe. They’re there to create a sense of security, but not to actually provide any. Still called the cops to neutralize the threat. The cops used guns.

        • TheKingJAK

Stopped mass murder? The gunman was only going for TSOs. In other words, if TSA personnel had escaped the gunfire then nobody would’ve been killed (Although I’m sorry for the guy who was).

      • BA Baracus

        Terrible….yet probably the truth.

      • TheOriginalDonald

No no no, I bet they were groping Kari Byron.

  • Jack Deth

    Memo to Grant Imahara:

LAPD does NOT have “automatic weapons”! They had a hard enough time trying to upgrade to M-1 Garands originally after the L.A. Shootout.. After that idea was shot down. M-16/M-4 rifles became available. Most upgrades have been to non lethal and lethal shotguns and semi-automatic M-4s.

    • MAA Oregon

Totally thinking the same thing. People throw around “automatic weapon” like they know what that means.

      • Mack Bonham

Actually the Mythbusters guys absolutely do know the difference between auto and semiauto. They may be mistaken about what LAPD carries but (unlike most media folks) they are not fundamentally ignorant about firearms.

        • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

They may understand the difference, but from a distance of a few dozen feet could they see it … my guess is not. The selector switch is pretty small.

    • Kent

M-16s ARE automatics firing multiple rounds with a single trigger pull.

      • Brent Guthrie

M-16A1’s have a fully automatic selection.
M-16A2’s have a three round burst instead of full auto.
        Not sure about M-4’s.
        AR-15’s are semi-auto only.

        • ToBNamedL8r

Exactly. Any weapon that fires multiple rounds with a single trigger pull is defined as an automatic weapon, making the M1A1, M1A2s automatic weapons.

M4 has selective fire options including semi-automatic and three-round burst (like the M16A2 and M16A4), while the M4A1 has the capability to fire fully automatic instead of three-round burst (like the M16A1 and M16A3)

        • Kent

So if they had any M16 version or an M-4 with 3 round burst or full auto then they had an automatic weapon. If they had AR-15s they did not.

          • Kent

Just checked the LAPD Arms list and it includes both the M4 and an M-5 sub-machinegun

          • Dingus

Ok so in order to have an automatic weapon A: You have a federal firearms license. And that is super super hard to get.
B: You got it illegally, modified it yourself OR you got if from the government when they let 1000’s of automatic weapons walk across the boarder to mexico.

Or you are issued one from the military/government.

So…if this guy had an automatic weapon that’s where he got it from
people see a scary looking weapon and call it the name the MEDIA gave it which is totally incorrect in every form.

            Which one is it?

          • Walter Luffman

I might have to watch CNN tonight just to see what Musket says. Although I’m sure I already know ….

          • Kent

original point in this post was someone saying that the LAPD didn’t have automatic weapons. I was responding to that, not whether or not the shooter had one.

        • Devil Dog

          didn’t like the A2.

      • peaser

They can be made to fire single round per trigger pull, or 3 round to trigger pull, or full auto on trigger pull. Most patrol rifles will be single round only. In your specialized units you will have 3 round burst or full auto as an option, but most will stay with single round as that fits most shooting scenarios.

      • Scott H

Do you see ANY rifles? So far the biggest gun I’ve seen is a tactical shotgun.

    • Pam

What the heck is an upgrade to a non lethal??

      • Jack Deth

Non lethal=A shotgun that fires bean bags instead of a slug or buckshot. An idea pushed by PC bed wetters.

        • Dr. Obvious

Not non lethal, less lethal. As that old guy in The nursing home found out last year, they still kill

    • Dutch

Hmm, you probably know more than I do about the LAPD, but knowing what I know about the M1 Garand it was only in service until 1957 as a U.S. service rifle. I’d would be really, REALLY surprised if the biggest city in the country pushed to get their officers armed with a 10 lb, 3 foot, 8-round rifle used in WWII and Korea. Are you sure you didn’t mean the M14 that succeeded the M1 Garand? That being said, the SWAT officers were already armed with AR-15s at the time of the Hollywood Shootout and afterwards the DoD supplied each patrol sergeant of the LAPD with 600 surplus M16s.

      • Jack Deth

The officers with AR-15s arrived after the first responding officers arrived on scene. Knew they were outgunned by clever criminals in body armor and semi automatic AKs and an AKM.

Those first responders set up a perimeter and found a gun store, whose owner “loaned” them several civilian .556 caliber AR-15s and Steyr AUG bull pup rifles to contain the situation.

The talk of M-1 Garands was broached by the Chief of Police a few days after the shootout.

    • Scott H

Shoot me once shame on you, shoot me twice shame on me!

  • Ken Alan Draper

If it turns out the shooter did not use an assault rifle I hope they bust yhat myth.

    • Douglas Morris

      • LoneWolf

What is funny is that the CDC study Barry ordered found that self defense was a sound reason to own firearms and for use of firearms, and that banning “assault weapons” would have no discernable impact on violence or firearm deaths.

  • guest

I doubt the shooter went through security…alarms would have gone off unless it was a plastic gun…lol!

    • Scott H

There are ways to get through security points without setting off alarms, and even with setting off alarms you can still get through some…!

      • guest

I have been in that terminal and unless they have changed procedures we had to walk through alarm censers in several places to get to where he was. As it turns out he started shooting and they all scattered so he went right through them!! Not a fun day at LAX!!

        • Scott H

It’s spelled “sensors” -_- Unless you are talking about the liberal media and how they censor anything negative, albeit the truth, about Democratic “leaders”

  • Clint Parker

    someone’s a potty mouth.

    • Scott H

It’s the biggest word they know, right next to “assault rifle”

  • Obama_Dogeater

“Assault rifle.” A phony term created by Clinton and gladly parroted by the MSM.

    • Bullrhider

Actually, the term was invented by Adolf Hitler. In 1943 the Germans developed the first intermediate cartridge, the 8mm Kurz. It was bigger than a pistol cartridge but smaller than a rifle cartridge. The result was a shoulder-fired, fully automatic rifle that was controllable. Germans called pistol-caliber automatic weapons “machine pistols” and rifle caliber automatic weapons “machine weapons”. Since the new weapon didn’t fit either category, the designers were stumped. Hitler called it an “assault weapon” — and the name stuck for selective fire weapons in an intermediate caliber.

      • Dr. Obvious

        i thought Hitler spoke German.

        • genes ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

          With a heavy Austrian accent.

          • Dr. Obvious

            I know nuhsing, nuhsing

      • Obama_Dogeater

That term was not used in the American lexicon until Clinton began using it in an attempt to cast a negative light on a certain type of rifle. My point is…IT’S A RIFLE. Example: an AR-15 fires a .223 round. I have a Ruger Mini 14 that is NOT considered an “assault weapon” because it doesn’t have a pistol grip and other features considered scary looking by liberals. What round does my Mini 14 fire? Same round as an AR-15, the .223.

        • Bullrhider

My point was that it was not a “term created by Clinton”.

          • Obama_Dogeater

            Resurrected by Clinton.

          • Vorant

            perverted by Clinton..

        sturm (assault) gewehr (rifle)

again a mixup, the term assault weapon is made up liberal nonsense, the only correct terminology is assault rifle, but this only applies to a light or intermediate rifle cartridge fired from a rifle with the ability to fire bursts of automatic

        • BlueGood

          Ja!!…Ja Ja….!!!

      • Scott H

That explains a lot, considering how Clinton is buddies with a Nazi liberal-billionaire, George Soros

    • everyoneIsOnBathsalts

i think you meant ASSAULT WEAPON

assault rifle comes from the german words sturm (assault) gewehr (rifle)

    • HanaFiveO

They dont carry automatic weapons, he mis-spoke. Ill give him a pass because of the stress level. When things calm down he needs to correct that tho.

  • thohan

Grant, you sure the cops had “automatic weapons”? Is that SOP in LA? Usually for folks on TV, that word does not mean what they think it means, but I’d expect the Mythbusters to be somewhat hoplofluent.

    • Good_Lt

If you’ve watched Mythbusters for any amount of time, it’s a good bet they know an automatic weapon when they see one. They use guns all the time on the show – all types.

      Just sayin.

      • Guest

Myth: Can someone sustain a gun shot wound in a gun free zone?

      • thohan

Exactly. That’s why I want some verification on that.

      • Dante42

I’m sure they know what an automatic weapon looks like. The problem is that the exact same appearance outside could have completely different components inside. Your typical gun-store AR-15 (semi-automatic) looks externally exactly like the M-16 (selective fire) I carried in the service. If you look really closely at an AR-15, (like two or three feet away) you might possibly be able to see that the safety only has two positions instead of three.

        • Dr. Obvious

Some lowers have 3 positions marked, but the selector can’t move to the third position. No way to tell unless you take the upper off and you know what to look for.

    • HanaFiveO

Even SWAT does not carry automatic weapons. They carry semi-automatic weapons.

  • Dr. Obvious

jeez, Mythbusters. You fire weapons of all types in almost every show. you’d think you would know there is no such thing as an assault weapon.

    • mountaindaisy

Dumb or politically correct or both? Couldn’t believe he said that. WONDERFUL! all we need is armed TSA agents. Wonder if the whole truth will ever come out

    • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

Well, true, but they did manage to cause chaos and panic with a bowling ball and old cannon trying to sort out a myth about early stone cannon balls.

      Wasn’t pretty.

    • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

One of the guys admitted to being scared. If that was their first time in an unexpected active shooter environment (simulated or otherwise) reason may have escaped them.

Just throwing it out there as plausible. Draw your own conclusions.

  • Bob Rich

    For the Mythbusters
Can someone sustain a gun shot wound in a gun free zone?

    …..stay safe

  • Guest

So it turns out that it was a TSA worker…you know the ones hired to keep us “safe”

  • Gretl Hartmann

Looking at the pictures over at Hot Air, I’m saying it was a Mini-14 or Mini-30 with a CAR stock

    • Dante42

Going to second that. Definitely not an AR, the stock is too thin where it connects to the back of the rifle. And the magazine isn’t curved enough to be an AK.

      • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

The ejection port seems a bit odd to me as well for an AR …

But in reality, it will be whatever Barbara Boxer wants it to be, She will get together with the Other Wicked Witches, use the ruby slippers and transmogrify it into yet another attempt to institute gun control.

  • Ken Kjer

You ever notice how all the shooters always, always pick gun free zones.

    • Jachim Soyer

      TSA Agents are armed. Yeesh.

      • Ken Kjer

No they aren’t. They are the ones that check you through. I am a retired police officer with over 30 years of experience and the idiots even ban retired police officers from carrying. Stupid, stupid, considering there is a federal law allowing police officers with 14 years or more of experience to carry w/o a CCW, except in schools, airports, etc. That is the stupid gun control nuts who have never spent a day on the street. Never mind that I hold a couple of records for combat shooting.

  • Ronnie

Another test for gun control, how else would this have passed through the process? Think about how scared everyone was and will want more control from the Government who is the main problem. If this is a gun free zone??????

    • Jachim Soyer

How is it a gun free zone? Have you seen TSA agents? They’re armed.

  • AZGurl

It’s easy to get through TSA agents when you shoot them.

This couldn’t have happened. Assault weapons are illegal in California and there are gun free zone signs everywhere at the airport.

  • John Ansell

I wonder if it was a gun from Fast and Furious.

OMG!           I HOPE THE KIDS ARE OKAY!

  • Rob in Katy

  • Thomas Purcell

Gee how are those gun free zones working out for yah?

  • Scott H

Shoot me once shame on you, shoot me twice shame on me.

I don’t see any automatic weapons in the hands of LEO’s, in fact I saw a pump shotgun, and it looks like the shooter had a Ruger Mini-14 to many people who actually know what a gun is! It must have been scary because they got a black stock instead of a wood stock -_- How do they even protect us!? By making sure people don’t have guns, when they don’t have a gun? Senseless!

Furthermore, aren’t big scary “assault rifles [sic]” (AR stands for Armalite Rifles FYI) banned in California? Especially Los Angeles? Isn’t LAX a gun free zone?

No gun magazine should have more than 7 pages!

    • Scott H

      P.S. I really want that P90! I’ll probably settle for an FN Five-Seven though…

  • Scarlet LeMay

Sounds pretty fishy. How did an assault rifle make it past security? Sounds like an anti-gun opponent set up!! They will actually kill people to get their way!!! hmmmmm.
