Fifteen years ago on Tuesday, the world lost comedy great Phil Hartman at the height of his career. Comedian Jon Lovitz took to Twitter to remember his “big brother” and fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum. “Remembering and never forgetting,” he tweeted.

Last year, Lovitz called Hartman “my favorite actor to work with & the nicest guy ever!”

Oh, man, it sure is dusty in here.

I loved Phil Hartman’s Bill Clinton impersonation. He was hilarious as that.

    • Jill

He was one of the best comedic actors of his time.

I was just about to say that. He was spot on. With the jogging and grabbing cheeseburgers. Oh, man. Some folks are just born for comedy!

There’s a video of Chris Farley and Phil Hartman together on SNL shortly before both of them died. Makes me tear up to this day. Gone too soon.

  • sja

    I blame Andy Dick.

  • Clete Torres

Phil Hartman. One of the best comedians, IMAO, of the 20th century. He could do it all, from character acting on SNL to voice-over work: (“Hi, I’m Troy McClure. You may remember me from such self-help videos as “Smoke Yourself Thin” and “Get Confident, Stupid.”)
    We miss you too, Phil.

  • colchak

Geez I miss him. Favorite comedian as a kid and still tops for me now. SNL, The Simpson, NewsRadio…he was great in everything.

It can be so very hard to lose someone you love or care about in such a tragic way. It stays with you forever.
I remember when that happened. What an awful & sad day. I do hope the children are doing well, today.

My favorite Lovitz/Hartman SNL skit, “Johnny O’Connor” :

          • Sons Thunder

That’s the ‘shortened version’ of a youtube link. Useful for posting links to twitter.

          • Junie3

It was posted with my ipad version of youtube. Dude chill out.

    Best Clinton impression ever.

Hartman was good guy and so hilarious. I remember hearing about when he died. It was such a shock. I used to watch the show News Radio all the time. They brought in Lovitz after Hartman died. Lovitz was funny of course, but the show just wasn’t the same without the “Bill McNeal” character.

    • Kevin Krom

And when News Radio was first pitched, Hartman had the cachet to have demanded to be the lead, but IIRC, he insisted on having a smaller part where he could play the large ham but not be the main character.

  • Tommy Christopher = Fake name

I blame Sinatra and the mafia. Phil’s Sinatra impression was spot on and Frank DID NOT like it.

  • Mr. Saturn

I will always appreciate the characters he played in The Simpsons. Usually if he was on an episode, it was probably going to be great.

  • Ned McFury

I was in shock the day Phil Hartman died. He was one of my idols. Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, Frank Sinatra, Ed McMahon, Frankenstein. He made every scene and everyone in it funnier. The funniest man of the funniest era. RIP.

  • DjWeideman

I remember the day Phil Hartman died, not only being crushed by the loss, but also, that Howard Stern, who was a huge fan, cancelled his regular E! show that night, and instead, ran two hours of his interview with Phil from a year or so before. Hilarious stuff that had me in tears by the end, realizing the loss we all suffered.

  • Mark Fritz

Troy McClure. Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Gay Communist Gun Club. Frankenstein. RIP PH.

    • Sons Thunder

Hartman’s Donahue was spot-on and hilarious.

  • Glen Hull

Hartman as Sinatra “Milli Vanilli, what is this faggot crap?. Epic.

  • TheOriginalDonald

I wonder if Liz Lemon and Stuart Smalley also remembered.

  • SideshowJon36

You may remember him from such roles as Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz!

  • putthehammerdown

I remember with some inner mirth all the episodes where Phil played :
“Jean, The Anal-Retentive Chef ” [or you name it]
One fave was him fishing with guest-host, Wayne Gretzky.
Handi-Wipes and plastic/paper disposal bags galore.
I almost ‘ralphed’ my dinner and I had eaten a while ago.
…and don’t forget him from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, as The Ship Captain
You just knew you were seeing ‘something special’, even then…………
