As Twitchy reported earlier, Netflix thumbed its nose at conservative subscribers when it jumped into the #SarahPalinFilms hashtag with a tweet that recommended the movie “Iron Sky.” The sci-fi comedy features an unflattering Sarah Palin caricature as president of the United States and draws a parallel between American conservatives and Nazis.

Conservative warrior woman and citizen journalist Michelle Lancaster reached out to Netflix via chat to express her objections to the tweet. Never underestimate the power of a woman with screen shots.

The entire conversation is documented on Lancaster’s blog, The Jersey-Texan, but here’s a taste.

netflix-chat-1

Click on the image for a larger view.

As the screen shot shows, a Netflix representative named “Katie” wrote, “I want to assure you that, that did not come from us. Twitter is a public site and anyone can post anything on there.”

Go home, Netflix. You’re drunk.

The tweet was sent from the verified Netflix account and hasn’t been deleted … yet.

https://twitter.com/netflix/statuses/329441561639260161

Lancaster wasn’t about to back down and insisted the tweet came from the official Netflix account. The Netflix rep paused while she consulted with her “research team,” then replied:

Alrighty so, Netflix does not have an official position on Sarah Palin or any political views. That post is in regards to a movie we’ve aquired called Iron Sky, which is a German-Australian produced action comedy which pokes fun at political views and such. This again has no reflection on Netflix’s position however it’s just a post on a new movie release much like our posts on news and updates we make.

So, Netflix was just pimping a new movie release and has no “official” position on Palin.

https://twitter.com/SkiGarmisch/status/329603327178457089

But unofficially (on its official Twitter account), using the #SarahPalinFilms hashtag on a tweet about a Palin-mocking space Nazi flick is good stuff, huh?

https://twitter.com/SkiGarmisch/status/329603589947420674

Lancaster was ready to fight like a girl:

That is not what was implied. By participating in this hashtag and promoting a movie which pokes fun at political views, Netflix is endorsing poking fun at Sarah Palin. Is this what Netflix stands for?

Is there a poking fun movie Netflix might want to share for a hashtag game against President Obama?

The rep replied:

I assure you that there was no intention on poking fun on Sarah Palin at all. I do want to thank you so very much for chatting in with us I would love to send your feedback to my research team. and Let them know as well how you feel about this situation. I totally understand, however that was just the popular hashtag following the movie. We just got caught up in all the mess with using it however once again this has no reflection on our position with political views and Sarah Palin.

Via email, Twitchy received the transcript of another chat with Netflix (hat tip: Twitter [email protected]).

I’m unwilling to do business with a company that takes political cheap shots on Social Media towards my culture.

The movie that Netflix posted as a #SarahPalin film portrays an election campaign for a right wing american president, clearly modeled after Sarah Palin in which they try to draw parallels between extremely conservative americans and nazis. For Netflix to post that as a movie, and follow it up with a comment that it was an entertaining movie on twitter is disgusting.

The response from a Netflix rep named “Chelsea” was similar to the one Lancaster received.

Netflix doesn’t have an official position on Sarah Palin or any political views. The post that you saw was in regards to the movie, Iron Sky, which is a German-Australian action comedy which does poke fun at political views and all that. This definitely has no reflection on Netflix’s position! It is a post about our new movie, much like we do on any other new release or news updates we have. We definitely don’t want you to think that post was coming off as a cheap shot or anything!

Gee, why would anyone think that tweet was a “cheap shot or anything”? More from Chelsea:

I totally understand, however that was just the popular hashtag following the movie. We just got caught up in all the mess with using it however once again this has no reflection on our position with political views and Sarah Palin. I can cancel your account for you and you will not be charged in the future!

Yep, Netflix got caught up in a mess. And it’s one the company will have to address.

Lancaster is awaiting an email response from the company. She wrote, “I’m not satisfied with the Netflix experience right now. We’ll see if they respond or retract the tweet.”

Yes, we’ll see. And if it disappears quietly, Twitchy is forever.

Update:

Another chat transcript, this time with Netflix rep “Hayden”:

Hayden writes:

My jaw slammed to my desk when I saw that. Thank you so much for being vocal about this. If you know anyone else that would like to say something, just have them chat in, or call in, either way is fine.

Here’s an easier to read version of the transcript:

  • d1comment

You would think Netflix would have learned something about alienating its customers…obviously not. Here we go again.

  • USKensington

And, as we all know, getting “caught up in all the mess” is just another way of saying “shitting the bed.”

Hey Netflix, a bunch of your customers are Conservative! I know, I know, you THINK everybody thinks like you do and marches in lockstep, but they don’t, and you’d know that if you didn’t live and think in a box. You’re about to be schooled for a Liberal tool.

Here is the response I received from netflix:

The movie ‘Iron Sky’ is a futuristic movie that Sarah Palin is the president of the United States. Through a turn of events the country has to fight off Nazis that have been hiding in the dark side of the moon. We aren’t taking any political affiliation by our tweet, it was purely intended for entertainment value and to promote the content that we have on our site. • daeghrefn

Firstly, the movie sounds like a bad trip. Well, except for the Palin thing (heh). Secondly, the message from Netflix sounds like it was written by a 6th grader.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=7011573 Beth Lott

Could this be a case like that Brit store where the guy doing the social media stuff went off the reservation on something? Because, if so, major fail not only on their part, but also on the person who hired them.

I do social media stuff for my work (admittedly, our scale is much smaller) and the FIRST thing you think when you go to write something is “How will this reflect on the company?” It’s important to make sure the person behind the keyboard is going to do that.

  • NCRelite

how about that movie where Obama is the president and he mandates a government takeover of the healthcare industry and Americans go from being citizens to becoming subjects whose fate is decided by unnamed, unaccountable bureaucrats? wait that’s real life

    • michael s

You mean the healthcare act that the most powerful conservative said was the law of the land and the house will not repeal it? You mean the healthcare act head conservative Scotus said was constitutional? You mean the healthcare act that is literally attacked once a month but still stands?

      • FGCU_James

Yes, the healthcare monstrosity which takes a dump on the Constitution, which when stacked up, is taller than LeBron James which was only upheld 5-4 in the SCOTUS (not by conservatives BTW), which just keeps adding to our ridiculous deficit and debt, which can’t be repealed by the House because even if Boehner (among others) grew a pair and passed such a bill, the Senate would just kill it or failing that, Obama himself.

And yes, until such point that it is repealed, Obamacare is the law of the land, and we’re all going to suffer for it.

Bless your heart Michael, you don’t seem to realize it, but there is a reason why Hillarycare was killed in the 90s, and why Obamacare was shoved down our throats.

So their ‘defense’ is “Hey, we have no political position; we just saw an opportunity to jump onto a bandwagon in order to make money, so we took it.” How morally pure of them!

I received a similar response when I called to cancel my subscription. The rep claimed that they were simply endorsing a movie. I corrected her and informed her that, no, the verified Twitter account joined in a coordinated hashtag attack against Sarah Palin. She simply played dumb, which I felt was all-too appropriate.

  • maplebob23

When I first saw the trailers for this film I thought it would portray Palin in a positive light. When it came to netflix, I started watching it and I gave up within the first few minutes of the Palin character’s introduction.

  • daeghrefn

“A ton of backlash”. I love it. Seems like Palin’s not such an easy target after all, huh.

  • JustLikeAnimals

Well, they aren’t denying it now. As a subscriber and shareholder, I had a ~10-minute chat with a rep who stated:

“I definitely appreciate your concern on this matter – I can assure you that Netflix does not have any political affiliation and that the post was intended to promote
content only. While I do not know who approved the tweet, I will tell you that
you’re definitely not the only person reaching out to us about this tweet.”

“It’s definitely generated discussion online as well as here at Netflix, so believe me when I say that we are very aware of it, and we’re definitely looking into it.”

    • Katie Hursh

Oh my goodness. Words other than ‘definitely’ are -definitely- useful. Why does Netflix have a bunch of nitwits as customer service reps? Not a single one of them sounded professional.

      • torpedoman2002

I was a call center rep at a cell phone company for about 5 years. I hated days when customers are upset. You are caught between a rock and a hard place. As you calm and assure customers you cannot say something that the company has not approved. I’ve had angry calls about service or no service, bills, receiving a bad phone, and occasionally someone from the left or right that the company upset. We were told that the company had no political views, and we were to repeat that. We were encouraged not to give out the headquarters phone number or address. We were advised to take care of the call and not to send it higher. I feel for the customers service reps. They have to deal with angry customers, that were made angry by someone who receives a bigger pay check.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not making excuses for the companies lack of judgement. I will also cancel if they do not apologize and retract their statement. I’m just explaining about the bad day the lowest paid workers are having to deal with because of someone else screw up.

  • carti

My conversation with Netflix: I was told by the Netflix rep that as a conservative woman I shouldn’t be upset by their connotation of conservatives and Nazis because “as an African American Obama Supporter”, she thought the tweet was funny and didn’t have a problem with it. Okay. Cancelled Netflix simply because I don’t do stupid.

    • wwbdinct

Are you serious? Honestly…..did that really happen because if it did, an even bigger shitstorm is going to rain down on Netflix.

    • Sotiredofthis

The new definition of humor. Obama supporters will let us know when it is funny. But I must admit, I have been having a good laugh reading their spelling and grammar. Now there is education money well spent.

    • torpedoman2002

I hope you have that call center reps name. you need to file a complaint on that rep. In fact I would get the number above and call headquarters and give them an ear full. Tell them both about the poor decision on the twitter post, and then tell them about this rep. She needs to be fired.

    • CherDash

@Kathleen Vickers Atencio: Did you record/copy the conversation?

  • RichardBlaine

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised, the the Netflix customer service present as illiterate morons. Could this be deliberate? Is playing stupid a marketing ploy?

  • conservativemomma

I called Netflix this morning and had them put me through to a supervisor. He tried to deny the tweet at first and then said that they also stock 2016 Obama’s America(which he thought “bashed” Obama). I told him there was no comparison. I also let him know that all the snarks that think Palin is dumb and were amused by this tweet don’t bother paying for their internet content so if they want to stay in business they should consider that conservatives are the ones paying their salary.

  • Obama Go Home!

For every conservative canceling over this, a liberal will be signing up. Netflix doesn’t care; it won’t affect their bottom line.

I’ve never liked Netflix personally. All their content is old and I’ve never found a “new” release worth watching.

I LOVE Amazon Prime though. And, well, some other internet sites I won’t name.

I love Sarah, and I am glad this Tea Party sister is defending her against rudeness, but I’m wondering if this something that can be called an overreaction? All public figure get lampooned, especially
conservative ones. We make fun of Bam Bam, Slow Joe and Mad Michelle all the time. I’m not quite seeing why this is a /Man The Forts! situation. I do prefer that Sarah not issue so many quotes with profanity though. I did not like her remarks of last week about ass kissing. When one recalls that in 2011, Sarah attended that same function, and was The Belle of The Ball, I think it makes her look somewhat bitter. Our Sarah is still young, politically speaking, and she probably is taking a few well deserved years to relax a little, do some spiritual healing after being an object of GuacaMole hammers from both side of the isle.

Sarah never attended the WHCD she was making a speech nearby at the time of the WHCD after the speech she went with Greta Van Susteren to a couple of after parties.

Who knew that was still shocking in this day and age? I’m the only conservative I know of at my Parish, (actual parish). I have faced the truth that I come from a long line of low info (brainwashed) voters. I love them, but have given up trying to engage them in the sport of political thought. Shalom

no, it’s become too popular the last 5 years for the left to make outrageous accusations and never apologise for them or admit they are not true. It is becoming the new norm to trash gun owners, conservatives, Christians, etc
Anyone beginning to feel like the Jews of Isreal?
In case nobody noticed, that is exactly how they treat us.

Thank you for contacting Netflix customer support.
Here is the transcript from your recent chat with customer support:

    Netflix Darion
Hi there! My name is Darion. And who do I have the pleasure of
    chatting with today?
    You
    digitalPimple
Wondering if you are going to remove that ridiculous tweet from
    last night?

    Netflix Darion
Hmm okay I can help you with this! What tweet are you referring
    to?

    You
I believe you know the one.

    Netflix Darion
Hmm okay are you talking about the tweet about the new movie
    Iron Sky?

    You
“I can almost see Redbox from my front porch…”

    You
Yeah that tweet. We all know the intention. Stop acting dense
please. Its even more insulting than the tweet.

    Netflix Darion
You know, I completely understand why this might have upset you.
I was just as surprised to see that tweet! Please keep in mind that we aren’t
affiliated with any political party, we were simply trying to promote a comedy
called “Iron Sky” in a comical way, sort of like a Saturday Night
Live parody. I will gladly notate your account stating that you felt this was
in bad taste. Would that be alright?

    You
    Please do. One more question..

    Netflix Darion
Sure! What can I help you with?

    You
What movie would you suggest for #Obama-BidenMovies ?

    Netflix Darion
Hey you know what, I’m not political affiliated at all myself.
But the tweet was not intended to offend Republicans or Sarah Palin herself. It
was used to promote the new title on our website.

    You
But it did so why not just delete it?

    You
I understand YOU can’t but why has your superiors allowed it stay
    online?

    You
I’m not sure if it’s in your current catalog but I would suggest
    an old title for #Obama-BidenMovies.

    You
    Dumb & Dumber

    Netflix Darion

I completely hear where you’re coming from ######! But again
the tweet was only for promotional uses only. We aren’t on anyone’s side
politically. The title actually isn’t on our website with that header.

    You
How about Dumbell for the kids?

    Netflix Darion

Okay ###### is there anything else that you need assistance
    with?

    You
TV .. The Biggest Loser?? No that’s it thank you.

    Netflix Darion

Okay ##### I really hope you have a good night and enjoy! And
one more thing, if you wouldn’t mind, please stay online for a one question
    survey.

  • JoeMyGodNYC

And the tea people say the LEFT gets outraged about trivial things. Eye roll.

    • deejayaz

And if this had been Neflix endorsing an Obama ala Hitler film, you’d react.

It’s a toss up for me. I don’t know which to loathe more: Dishonesty, or, Ignorance of Marxists. In honor of the your herd’s panchant for “fairness” I’ll go with equal disdain for the two low characteristics.

Netflix will be brought to justice

  • dabhidh

Well, the adults sure showed up for this conversation, didn’t they?

My prediction: The tweet will eventually be pulled, but Hayden – the Netflix rep who actually admitted that the tweet existed and agreed that it was out of line – will be canned. The “marketing genius” who created the tweet will be excused.

  • Robert

Well as I was told to do yesterday I followed up again today…….

Thank you for contacting Netflix customer support.

Here is the transcript from your recent chat with customer support:

    Netflix Debye

Hi there! Debye here, how can I help today?

    You

Yes, I just was checking back as told by Kia yesterday to see if you all had corrected the tweet mistake yet?

    Netflix Debye

I can surely check into that, but I am not sure of the mistake you are speaking of! Forgive me, as I was off yesterday! Am I speaking with Robert?

    You

    Yes it is

    You

Netflix thumbed its nose at conservative subscribers when it jumped into the #SarahPalinFilms hashtag with a tweet that recommended the movie “Iron Sky.”

    You

    which compares conservatives to nazi’s

    Netflix Debye

I see, I have not yet heard of this, or the film! I can check into that for you however! While I am doing that, how has your week been so far?

    You

fine, your research is very aware

    Netflix Debye

Alright! I am checking right now!

    Netflix Debye

Thank you for waiting. So after doing some research, I do see here that Netflix did take part in a twitter feed concerning Governor Palin. Our goal in participating in that feed was only to promote titles that we currently have in our selection and not to take shots at Governor Palin, or anyone else, in any way shape or form. We as a company do not have any political affiliations, and our goal is to only promote the titles that we have in our library. Thank you for bringing this up though! I would love to notate this feedback to make sure your voice is being heard. I will notate exactly what you have to say, as the agent did yesterday, and our team will see that. Make sure to add in there what you would like to see done about it, so that they can look into getting it done, Robert! Can I go ahead and get that note started?

    You

    Yes……

    You

Quite simple, what you just stated is false, you only recommended 1 film, to do what you stated you surely would have recommended more than 1.

    You

Of course when I state you I mean Netflix.

    Netflix Debye

Sure! I understand, Robert, no worries!

    You

That is not what was implied. By participating in this hashtag and promoting a movie which pokes fun at political views, Netflix is endorsing poking fun at Sarah Palin. Is this what Netflix stands for? Is there a poking fun movie Netflix might want to share for a hashtag game against President Obama?

    You

Here is the hashtag if so; #NetflixObamaFilms

    You

Your research team should be aware of it as well but has yet to post any film recommendations which Netflix has.

    Netflix Debye

So I did some more digging into this. I honestly don’t know where the hash tag of Sarah Palin originated but Netflix’s participation in that hash tag was not, in any way, intended as a political view but simply to help promote the title “Iron Sky”. I, myself have not seen the title, but I can imagine it’s some sort of parody with the character. I definitely understand where you’re coming from on this. I assure you Netflix has no political affiliation; any post from our social media sites are solely intended for entertainment and promotion of our content. I also understand that you’re upset and you have every right to be. Please know it was not Netflix’s intention to upset anyone, certainly not mine. I’m more than happy to take this feedback and note it in your account so our people can see and keep track of the complaints we’re getting in regards to this. I know you want your voice on this to be heard and I will definitely do everything I can on my end to see that it is.

    You

Just so you know since you were off yesterday and may not have seen the movie either…..The movie that Netflix posted as a #SarahPalin film portrays an election campaign for a right wing american president, clearly modeled after Sarah Palin in which they try to draw parallels between extremely conservative americans and nazis. For Netflix to post that as a movie, and follow it up with a comment that it was an entertaining movie on twitter is disgusting.

    You

It does not matter where the #sarahpalinsfilms originated from what matters is Netflix’s participation in the slamming and backing it up with another tweet that it was a highly entertaining.

    You

Yes I am aware that you are the message taker and I am in now way upset with you personally.

    Netflix Debye

I have notated all of this on your account for you, John. I assure you if I could do anything directly to resolve this, I would. I have just asked around here, and it seems I was th only one out of the loop on this!

    You

As of now it’s been over 24 hours, and @netflix STILL hasn’t deleted its tweet insulting Palin & conservatives. I guess they stand by it.4

    You

    My name is Robert

    Netflix Debye

I am so sorry, Robert! I just left a chat with a John, I sincerely apologize!

    You

    No Problem.

    Netflix Debye

I have notated all of what you have said Robert, and suggested they remove the post due to its highly offensive qualities. Is there any thing else I may do for you today?

    You

I feel they should tweet out an apology, retraction or whatever OR they should post to the #NetflixObamaFilms some equally slamming films as well. I mean after all it would only be promoting films, right?

    Netflix Debye

I assume that they would say so, yes. I am going to look up this film on my lunch to see what it is though I assure you of that!

    You

If truly wanting to promote films and make their “statement” as you provided above true they would do just that.

    You

but as of yet they have not so that inaction clearly points out that there is/was a shot to be made.

    Netflix Debye

I wish that I could speak in further detail with you about this, Robert, but all that I can say is that I agree with you! As I said, I added in a few things about taking it down on your notes!

    You

My lunch is now over thank you for your time.

    Netflix Debye

Thank you very much for feeling so passionately and chatting in about this today!

    Netflix Debye

Is there anything else I may do before we go?

    You

No, guess I wil check back tomorrow unless I see a correction.

    Netflix Debye

Ok, have an amazing day! Thanks so much for chatting in today! And one more thing, if you wouldn’t mind, please stay online for a one question survey.

Check out our Help Center if you have any more questions.

    Ha!

Sorry, “Cancelled” was happening at my house and I admit it, fully. :)

  • Ryan Leslie

I mean, it IS a Sarah Palin movie. I guess we need to see the movie to judge. Just think if we put this much effort into REAL issues. That being said they definitely would not do this about Obama, and also the should’ve said The Undefeated but that is probably not on Netflix.

  • CrashFroelich

Netfix made fun of Palin…Great, I will have to order more movies then. Conervatives can rip up anyone they want but boy do they cry when someone goes after one of their own….Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Somebody did a Palin joke. Call the cops. NOW. What a bunch of drama queens. And those that talk about “cancelling” don’t even have a Netflix account. As usual.
