And now for the uplifting palate cleanser of the week.

In January, Twitchy told you about Michael Garcia, the Houston waiter who refused to serve a customer who insulted Milo Castillo, a five-year-old boy with Down syndrome. After he overheard the man say, “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else,” Garcia told him, “I’m sorry, I can’t serve you.”

The heartwarming story didn’t end there.

Garcia’s story lit up social media and letters, money and gifts poured in from all over the world, including “a box with Star Wars t-shirts and toys … with a handwritten note from Lucas Films.” Garcia says all of it is going to Milo and his classmates at the Rise School of Houston, a school that serves children with and without developmental disabilities.

“I couldn’t keep one penny of it,” Garcia explained. “It wouldn’t be right. I’ve really taken a look at myself and it’s really changed me.”

Garcia presented gift cards and a check for $1,145 to the school, and the students honored their hero with a celebration.

What’s next for Garcia? He’s still working at Laurenzo’s restaurant and says he’d like to volunteer at the Rise School.

We, in the human race, really need to hear at least one such story a day; it’s good for the soul…

Great story. However, Twitchy, you get a slap on the wrist for “Lucas Films.” The name of the company is “Lucasfilm.”

    • Patrick Dennehy

If we are going to be 100% accurate it’s “The company that sucked the soul out of my favorite childhood film franchise”

      • TheOriginalDonald

and will continue to do so now that jar Jar Abrams is directing Star Wars Episode VII-LOST!

  • Txgirlinnh

I am a patron at Laurenzos here in Houston for Sunday Brunch and Garcia has been my waiter every time. He is such a nice person and just wants you to enjoy your meal and your time at Laurenzos and loves to chat up the patrons…….I am planning my birthday Brunch there for my birthday in April and I only hope he waits our table!! The entire Laurenzo family owns several different restaurants in town and even though each restaurant is different, they always have great service and good food…Houston is a great city full of good and friendly people. Garcia is an example of what most people in Houston are like!

    Good man!

  • Trevor Sanchez

A great man. Glad he is getting the recognition he deserves. too bad the identity of the man who said those awful words isn’t known. He must see himself as being perfect in this world. But he will get a surprise in the next one.

  • Anna Crawford Rice

And this is what we need. Not a bureau of sensitivity or a public service announcement, but real love from one human being to another. Amazing what an impact that can make!

  • c4pfan

    That’s so awesome!

Im amazed that there are still ingnorant people in this world that make funny of people with a disability. People never fail to amaze me, but its men and women like this waiter that help restore my doubts in people.

Thanks for standing up for the innocent.

  • james corcoran

Thanks for standing up for the innocent. We need more of that.

  • Barbara Reynalds Johnson

This is a man showing what a Christian should be and do. We should all stand up for what is right when we have the chance. Keep up the good work Garcia.

How could some piece of worthless excrement make fun of a disabled child? Thank God there are people like Michael Garcia in this world. When my youngest son graduated from high school there was a down’s syndrome boy in the graduating class. When his name was announced the rest of the graduating class started to applaud. Tears came to my eyes. I am afraid that when I was in high school if a disabled child had been in a similar situation during graduation that some people would have made crude remarks. I was very proud of my son & the rest of the graduating class for applauding. This down’s syndrome boy is a member of my church & always has a smile on his face. Shame on the degenerate customer who made such a crude comment.

A good portion of society looks to Hollywood and pro sports teams for their heros when they should really look no further than people like Mr. Garcia. You are a huge part of what is right in this world, sir. You’re parents should be proud.

In my opinion, well-known actors and athletes shouldn’t be thought of as either all good or bad collectively, but simply as people who are successful at their jobs. Otherwise, they are just regular people who can have the same problems as non-famous people. For example some of them* have disabled children of their own.

*or WERE disabled children who grew up to be these things
