Evidently the bottom of the barrel wasn’t completely scraped clean after Ann Coulter called President Obama a “retard” yesterday. And fancy that: She’s still not funny.

https://twitter.com/Markandeaston/status/260801729505923072

Nope, you’re not oversensitive. Coulter’s tweets were classless, unnecessary, and mean-spirited. And it wasn’t just liberals hoping to score points against Coulter who took offense.

https://twitter.com/thecessa/status/260801927690989569

https://twitter.com/Joe_Rollins_/status/260801001454436353

But hey, trolling the Twitterverse sells books, or something. At least, that’s what Coulter hopes.

And for what it’s worth, Twitchy disagrees that President Obama was making a cancer reference when he spoke of “stage three Romnesia.” He also said, “I want to make sure nobody in the surrounding area catches it,” which implies that the analogy was to a communicable disease or some sort of epidemic.

Classless and wrong. Reach for the stars, Ann!

Ok folks take a chill pill. The term “retarded” is not being used to describe mentally challenged or damaged children. The word “retarded” has come to mean about the same as calling someone a moron. Not nice but descriptive. It means they aren’t too smart. It wasn’t meant to offend people with learning disabled children.
In fact there was a movement decades ago in Academia and Medicine to stop calling these children “retarded”. and so it got canned. Get a ladder please and get off of your ‘High Horses.” Thin skinned Political correctness is a worse disease in my book.

    • http://twitter.com/carebear83 Kara Amber

^exactly. As if people with mental disabilities are actually called retards! There would be outrage if that was the case!

      • Guest

Apparently you don’t have a child or family member with a mental disability. I have a disabled son who falls on the medical scale of ‘mentally retarded’, and when we’ve been out in public, he’s been called a ‘retard’, and it wasn’t a complement, I can assure you. I ignore the ignorance of people who use it as a slam, and I don’t think I’m hyper-sensitive…but I don’t appreciate the term. The words, ‘moron’ and ‘idiot’ and “imbecile” are also old (and I mean OLD) medical terms that were once used to describe people’s intelligence, depending on their IQs – i.e., an ‘idiot’ had an IQ of less than 60, an ‘imbecile’ had an IQ between 60 and 70, etc.) I’m sure many people don’t know that, and we use those words to describe people as well. However, it’s probably not a good idea for someone to use ‘retard’ as an adjective to describe the POTUS if she wants her views to be taken seriously. There are other adjectives that would work just fine.

        • Iacobus

I had a cousin who died at 3 that had Down Syndrome.

And yet, I’m not offended. Go figure.

The next thing you know, they’ll want to take other words away, like, “moron,” “imbecile,” and, “idiot,” because it hurts their precious sensibilities. They mean the same thing.

          • Mini14’sBlkStrat

I understand their point, but I agree w/you. I use the term “retarded” when needed.

Lacobus, close your eyes and tell me what the face looks like when you picture an imbecile. Now try idiot. Let’s go for moron. Plug in other words that you might use to describe someone’s stupidity. Now keep those eyes closed and picture in your mind a Retard. I am going to bet that the first image you saw was NOT Barack Obama.

I think those who are ‘down arrowing’ me are missing my point. My original post was not meant to say that Ann can’t use whatever words she wants, joking or not…it’s just that even in a joke, it gives the libs/dems more fodder, because they lump us all together and think that we’re unintelligent because of the words we use. I use ‘moron’, ‘idiot’, and yes, ‘retarded’ in a joking manner as well…but not if I’m in a position where my opinion can reflect on a group of people who are already struggling to try to be taken seriously because of our values, beliefs, etc.

        • shimauma

would “leftard” be acceptable? It implies the lack of intelligence and also points toward the libturd establishment demoncraps. I made it up and intend to keep using it regardless of PC whiners.

Hmm, words mean things. I just cannot imagine saying that to someone that has a mentally retarded child and then say: Hey, it wasn’t meant to offend your kid.
But what do I know, English is not my first language and so I take the words at their face value.

      • Chris Yates

“I just cannot imagine saying that to someone that has a mentally retarded child and then say: Hey, it wasn’t meant to offend your kid. ”

yeah calling a child with a disabilty retarded would be pretty offensive. Reading these posts there is mixed opinions and some disagreement here, but I am pretty sure everyone agrees that what you stated would be offensive.
Thing is, I am not sure what that has to do with the subject at hand. Ann called Obama retarded, and he does not have any mental disability does he? Truth is, he is lacking some serious understanding about some critical things, like how an economy works for example. I’m sure a lot of people have wondered aloud, is this guy really retarded or what? of course they know he is not, but that’s kinda the joke really. I don’t find it offensive.

        • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

Chuck Yates. Walk a footstep in a retard’s shoe, then get back with me. The Joke Ain’t Funny. My daughter, whom so many of you seem to think has no feelings, would never consider speaking that way to someone. She is kind-hearted, empathetic, and as far as I can tell, almost perfect. If that is a RETARD, I want to be one too.

          • Chris Yates

Sounds like you have a wonderful daughter, but after reading your comment I don’t know if that’s any thanks to you. You might just be lucky in that God blessed you with a wonderful person as a daughter.

What’s with the “My daughter, whom so many of you seem to think has no feelings…”

I don’t know your daughter, and I don’t know anything about her, and I didn’t say anything about her, so WTH are you talking
about? And why are you directing it at me?

The Joke ain’t funny? The joke was that Obama is incompetent, and anytime someone points out just how clueless Obama is , it’s pretty damn funny as far as I’m concerned, so deal with it.

The Joke ain’t about your daughter jack, can you read? It takes some serious pathetic self-projection to get offended by something that has nothing to do with you and yours.

As I stated in my previous post, and I’ll say it again, it is pretty offensive to call someone with any disability retarded, and I would never do that.

          • YeahWeWill

That is double speak right there!

          • Jason_in_WA

You may be one if your skin is that thin. The people she was referring to were acting like “retards.” I am sure your daughter doesn’t act like one. She sounds like she is mentally disabled. If someone were to call her “retarded,” I would be the first one to back you up in the ass-whupping contest.

          • Jason_in_WA

@dennis sheppard I hope you were equally offended if you know anyone with cancer. Probably weren’t. That makes you a dick, as well as a retard. Retard in the non-mentally disabled sense.

          • YeahWeWill

And this is why, thank heavens, I am a moderate! Hypocrites! I’m curious when this became about ‘children’… I know that we like doing everything ‘for the kids’ including striking from teaching, doing dumb things we wouldn’t otherwise do (like stimulus spending), and just about anything under the sun that “oh, it’s for the kids” and that makes everything ok. Just because 1 person has a kid with DS doesn’t mean this is a reference to all kids.

        Origin:
1480–90; < Latin retardāre to delay, protract, equivalent to re- re- + tardāre to loiter, be slow, derivative of tardus slow; see tardy

        • http://twitter.com/DaffodilTimes The Daffodil Times

          your point being what?

          • ceyanne

The point being that retarded meant slow or delayed long before it was ever applied as a term to describe a mentally challenged person. And honestly, the term is accurate. Many people who are mentally challenged ARE delayed and sometimes slow. But somewhere along the way it became improper to label or point out the obvious. Waiting for the day when it isn’t PC to mention flame retardants. Eventually they’ll be called rapid oxidation inhibitors.

          • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

Ceyanne, So if I called someone beating up a gay person a “flame retardant”, does that maybe change the meaning? We all know what the dictionary says. We all know what words are used in medical text to describe conditions. When a word in used in it’s appropriate context, I believe that may have an impact on how we respond to it. Calling somebody a RETARD does not mean that you meant to say, “Gee, I noticed that you were mentally challenged. I just wanted you to know that I am really tuned in and sensitive to your feelings.”

          • ceyanne

“Calling somebody a RETARD does not mean that you meant to say, “Gee, I
noticed that you were mentally challenged. I just wanted you to know
that I am really tuned in and sensitive to your feelings.” ” And calling someone mentally or intellectually challenged does? What’s the difference? Retarded or challenged, either way it illustrates that a person has some sort of deficiency as compared to the rest of the population. It doesn’t mean they are less than any other person., Well, it didn’t until the PC police made it so. Challenged, differently-abled and all the other terms now applied are simply more innocuous sounding synonyms, meant to sound more pleasing to the ear with less stigma attached. Stigma placed by the PC folks to begin with.

          • CLASYS

          • Guest

I take it that your timing is a few degrees right of top dead center? (lol) I get that words are words and everyone has their own idea of what’s appropriate. I just hate to see someone who is a well-known conservative use a word that would give liberals (and some posters here!) any fuel to use against us. How about we agree to disagree and move on. I’d hate to see the disagreements about the use of the word ‘retarded’ be the focus, instead of the state of the economy, the election, etc. There are better words that Ms. Coulter could have used, but she hasn’t, and it is what it is.

          • LibLieExposer

            Actually you’ve got my timing spot-on :)

No, I don’t support Coulter’s use of the word retard in the context that she did. My opening comment was a historical context of the word in automotive industry. My trailing comment was just a dig at the elitist Ivy League liberals that believe they are holier than thou. Speaking of which, did you catch the news today that UNC Chapel Hill administration is discontinuing the use of the word “freshman” for first year college students as they (NOT the students) believe THAT word is offensive? What a bunch of delayed thinking inDUHviduals!

      • CLASYS

I beg to differ. I grew up and the WORDS were “mentally retarded” thus if you leave the first word out, you cannot stand on ceremony and claim you KNOW what that unstated word would be. Clearly, the word by itself is more vague and refers to whatever context it is in modified by the appropriate modifier. Engine retardation, spread of disease retardation, etc. Only a retard cannot tell the difference! [Sarcasm mode already on].

        • CLASYS

Liberals and retards in the same sentence is quite obvious. What is retarded is not their nominal mental cognizance, but rather their overall insanity. Thus, they have a special retardation of logical skills, yet are not mentally retarded in the medical sense. You can’t claim that merely using the word covers all cases; it’s the equivalent of calling me a racist because I don’t agree with you, you liberal retard!

Context is everything, and most of these PC assholes [an alternate for retard] know it, but remember, as self-appointed dictators of how you live, don’t let this PC crap creep into the language. Mastering idiomatic english is clearly another area most of them lack major skills. Going off on feelies excessively is what they mostly do.

Context. Verb vs noun vs adjective. Basic grammar and basic civility dictates use

    • CanofSand

“Retard” may be insensitive and inappropriate as an insult, but I don’t get how it’s suddenly been put on this “Do Not Say” pedestal alongside, say, “the N word”. It’s a word that kids at my elementary school said pretty commonly, and this was a wholesome school where cursing pretty much never happened.

I’m not going to say it’s okay to use the word, and I certainly would avoid it and in certain contexts it’s really horrible (like the left did to describe Trigg), but I have a question about how it’s such a bad word when used in a general sense. And it’s a serious, honest question. How is “retard” worse than “blind” or “lame” — also conditions real people suffer from — or even words like “idiot” or “cretin” — terms that actually still have real medical meaning (even though you’re more likely to see them in insults)?

No, really now. What is it that makes that word worse than the others I mentioned when you’re not, say, actually attacking a mentally challenged child because you’re a hyper-partisan bigot like Andrew Sullivan?

      • bb8689

CanofSand-Don’t worry.”blind”, “lame”, “idiot” etc. will be addressed by the PC police in due time. I think they meet once a year to pick the politically incorrect word(s) for the following year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chrisseanhayes Christopher Hayes

some of these libs call Malkin some of the dirtiest thing on earth and we’re getting offended about ‘retarded’? I think that’s ‘retarded’.

  • Snoop87432

Ann is fighting fire with fire. Good for her. You people need to get over being “offended”, because it offends me

    • YeahWeWill

Deal with it like you expect us to or are you the only one entitled to an opinion?

      BOOM!! Good call!

      • CLASYS

Remember, libtards can say anything they want and hide behind free speech. For all others, you are a if you say anything they don’t agree with.

  • http://optimalternative.com/ Mark B Hoover

It’s getting pretty lame when we have to consult the Urban Dictionary for each or every word’s innuendo prior to using it. There is a plentiful array of meanings for retarded, and winnowing them all down to the one pejorative (noun) used in describing mentally-challenged people is, in itself, a highly retarded (or myopic) view. Give this inclination enough momentum and we will have removed another useful word from our colorful language.

  • Shane Larsen

I’m going to let you in on something, Twitchy. Ann Coulter is telling a joke! And “retarded” does not equal the “N” word, or anything close to it! Stop with the P.C. hissy fit, please.

    • Laurie

I was going to post, basically the same thing. I have 2 grown sons with autism, that are considered “mentally retarded”. I was not offended at all by Ann’s comments b/c they are JOKES! If some rude person at the supermarket came up and called them a “RE-TARD” I’d have a problem with it. But, this??? The only thing that bugs me about it is how much attention Twitchy is giving it.

      • Brian Bennett

I’m pretty sure Bill “the devil inside” Mahr uses the word all the time…but with him its a joke…so…no one…says…WAIT THAT’S NOT FAIR! Why does he get a pass?

      • Brian Bennett

I’m pretty sure Bill “the devil inside” Mahr uses the word all the time…but with him its a joke…so…no one…says…WAIT THAT’S NOT FAIR! Why does he get a pass?

    • jdarwal

I’ll let you in on something too. Jokes aren’t funny when they hurt others whom they weren’t intended for. My son can’t defend himself from the term others like to use to describe him AND the same term others use to describe those whom they don’t like or appreciate. I will defend my son and others like him. Deal with it.

      • http://ConservativeMom.net/ LoriGirl

        Please see response #38.

        • Brian Bennett

I tried, they aren’t numbered…I must be retarded.

      • Hiraghm

Does this mean I can no longer tell presumed adults “stop acting like a child!”? I mean, doesn’t that hurt real children who just can’t help being a child?

      • Brian Bennett

I would definitely have a problem with that person who uses those terms toward your son, and leave Ann Coulter alone because she WASN’T TALKING ABOUT HIM.

  • Rusty

Aww, is Mrs. Malkin still butt hurt Ann Coulter called out the fraud and charlatan that is Sarah Palin?

    • Hiraghm

Speaks the voice of authority on “butthurt”. Run out of Preparation-H, did you?

  • http://twitter.com/RexBirt catfish

I do not agree with the use of the R-word. But I hear the N-word at other sites and in the pulbic. Mostly by people like Chris Rock But nothing is ever said. where is the out cry on that. Just because you are black does not give you the right to down grade your brothers and sisters. Everyone has to lighten up and think before they speak.

    • YeahWeWill

They do. I agree. The lowest common denominator has become the acceptable behavior. Pitiful

  • proud2beNRedState

Good grief — people need to get a grip. With all that’s wrong in the world, you actually worry about use of the word “retarded?” I’m a “twitchy” fan, but this particular thread is, IMO, a waste of space and time.

  • Im_Rick_James

Sorry, I am a 99.9% Twitchy (and Michelle) backer, but here I must dissent. Seems to me that in getting on Coulter for using the word “retarded”, we are doing exactly what the liberals want us to do, which is self-censor according to what they think is appropriate. And I think that’s garbage. Language control is the first step towards thought control, and we have a First Amendment for exactly that reason. If she wants to use the word “Retarded”, I say go for it.

    • jdarwal

She might as well use the “n” word while she is at it, huh? Dumb logic.

      • aegean1

Why not? Does the first amendment say you have the freedom of speech except when it offends people?

        • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

The RIGHT to say something does not mean it is the right thing to say

          • CLASYS

But more importantly, it does not mean it’s the WRONG thing to say. Libtards self-appoint themselves to judge what is and is not “right” according to them, which is an obviously retarded thing to do.

          • YeahWeWill

So let me get this straight. You can say whatever you want and I should stfu HOWEVER; If I should voice my opinion that it is not an appropriate statement, again I should STFU. So in other words, whatever you say goes and my opinion is moot. What the hell happened to my first amendment rights???

          • YeahWeWill

            Agree Dennis Shepard.

        • YeahWeWill

No but do people have to behave like an ahole to communicate? I think not. Is there really no class left in the wold?

      • Brian Bennett

YES! Do it Anne…call him a big ol’ Narcissist. We all know its what you want to do!

      • Brian Bennett

YES! Do it Anne…call him a big ol’ Narcissist. We all know its what you want to do!

      • Avey Owyns

NO! Then N word does not describe one’s mental capability or any cognitive ability. We say “…are you deft!’ -or- “…are you BLIND!” all the time! Do the deft and blind take offence? No, they do not. I’m sorry, but just as blindness is an eye deficiency and we use it as an insult … I see nothing wrong with using ‘retarded.’

        • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

Are you blind or deaf? Have you asked someone with those conditions if that could be offensive?

      • http://twitter.com/shaesdad dennis sheppard

Exactly. When you hear the n word, does the image of Mona Lisa pop into your head, or maybe Brad Pitt, or maybe Lassie? We all know what the face looks like that matches that word. That is not thought control. It is self control.

        • CLASYS

Funny you mention dogs and the N word:

There are many sources of information about the courageous men and women who built the Boulder Dam out in the desert. At the work camp, there was a small black dog that was cherished by all, the only pet there, etc. Unfortunately, he was killed and all were saddened by that, and they wanted his name honored, etc.

When it came time for the area to have some memorials added around the dam area, they built a lot of stone monuments out of the local red-rock material with great details, including wonderfully detailed shots taken from photos, and elaborate descriptions of each scene underneath. All that is, except one:

Seems that when these PC assholes in the Dept of the Interior found this out, the stone had been roughed out already, but they CENSORED the words for the dog:

All of the shots depict actual pictures and their actual names in great detail.

But when it came to the caption for the nice shot of the little dog who was affectionately known as “little niggy” they censored the stonework!

Thus, when you stop near the dam, go walk around the monuments. They are greatly detailed, but this one stands out like a sore thumb on a liberal contemplating its navel:

          [picture on top]

          caption below:

WOAH WOAH WOAH… So we call them ‘mentally handicapped’ and that’s ok, but saying ‘retarded’ is bad? The hypocrisy is amazing! Yeah, because the politically correct sounding “mentally handicapped” is supposed to make them feel normal and good!!!!

I have an uncle who’s retarded. I don’t think of him as a retard, I see him as my uncle.

    • [email protected]

I agree… they’re splitting hairs. Everyone should have compassion for a child, particularly one with disabilities but do that kid a huge favor and don’t turn him into an emotional cripple as well. Teach him that there are people with no couth and that their opinions mean absolutely nothing to his self-worth. THAT will take him much farther than sobbing sensitivity.

      • Keenan

I’m much worse off having a dad who divorced my mother and hasn’t talked to me for years than people calling me names.

    • vonvervengarten

Where do I start? Keenan, would it be funny if Ann said they were all [email protected], or Ni88ers? I think she should try it and see how it works out for her. I’ll be the mom who stands up for people with special needs, who don’t have a voice of their own. Every time.

      • Keenan

So, “mentally handicapped” is a term of endearment now? Or do we just call them people with special needs to tell them we love them?

        • CLASYS

      • Brian Bennett

The point, mom with really long name, is that Anne was not referring to NOR was she denigrating the mentally handicapped, or if you prefer; special needs children. She was referring to AND denigrating rooms full of Obama Zombies who by definition ARE Mentally handicapped and special needs.

On the contrary, Naresh. Michelle Malkin is an extremely intelligent, educated and up-to-the-minute young woman. Everyone should be as well-read and in touch with the world. But political correctness IS retarded, in the truest sense of the word. There are such things as good manners and sensitivity to the feelings of others but everone needs to find a pair and stop indulging themselves in so much sensitivity.

To the uber-sensitive lefties who go weak in the knees at any perceived slight that can be directly tied to a politically incorrect slur (if they say it’s so) get OVER yourselves! For the love of Pete! No one uses the term “retarded” at all anymore when referring to a person who is mentally challenged (wasn’t it you freaks who made sure that was “on the list” of egregious offenses and phrases to say?). The correlation is only manufactured in your tiny little mind because by golly it suits your faux outrage and yet another attempt to wax hysterical about a conservative, but more importantly, Ann Coulter. She tells the truth and you just can’t stand it!

  • People Corporation

Cretin, Moron, Imbecile & Idiot were also historical words used to describe the retards who typically occupy the same room as our developmentally disabled president.

  • [email protected]

I’m not a fan of using ‘retarded’ as a slam. I think it’s a perfectly good word and, when used within an appropriate context, should not offend anyone. BUT… liberal tweets, texts, etc., are routinely laced with every form of profanity imaginable. Where is all the righteous indignation when that filth is leveled at everyone from Ann Romney right on down?

    • YeahWeWill

I am just as indignant. I try not to be a hypocrite. Call me pc ahole. Oh well

  • http://ConservativeMom.net/ LoriGirl

I’d like to personally thank Ann Coulter for using the word “retarded” for describing something beyond stupid, dumb, or idiotic. Why is it OK to use the word “retarded” now? Because NO ONE calls mentally disabled people “retarded” anymore, ever. Thanks to “PC” jingoists for years, maybe even decades, they got what they want: use “mentally challenged” or “otherly-abled” or call it as it is: Autism, Downs Syndrome, whatever-the terms & diagnoses have been mainstreamed. And we complied. “Retarded” has graduated to mid-level rated PG name-calling. And we get to use it.

    • http://twitter.com/1PatriciaB Patricia Beha

Agree. Retard is no longer associated with mentally, emotionally or physically challenged persons. However, PC wins. I think AC should say that she does not associate the r word with the “otherly-disabled”and apologize to those who still do. We all make mis-takes and the best thing is always to acknowledge, pardon yourself and move on.

Is Ed Morrisey writing for the Twitchy Team? Stop the milquetoast crap.

  • Grumpa Grumpus

When we eere trying to take out a pillbox, we “retarded the satchel charge”… actually the pencil-primer.

You know Twitchy, they stopped calling mentally handicapped people in the late 1960s.

This is as bad as The Racist Codexia that the race-hatred-mongers keep adding to.

Retarded/Retard has a literal meaning— to lag, to advance slowly, to delay

And what term is better suited to a man whose guiding philosophy was full-grown (I can’t say “mature” because it isn’t…) before automobiles became common!

This seems like a “we have to ding ourside so the Proggies will agree we’re fair— what’s handy?

I’m disappointed in you, TwitchyTeam! You’re better than manufactured outrage.

BTW: I often find.Ann Frenetic, but not funny…
I don’t mind, though, not everyone’s cut out to be a Red Skelton, a Danny Kaye or a Bob Hope!

    At least she fights valiantly!

    • vonvervengarten

Nice try Grumpa, but if we insert your “slow moving” definition into Coulter’s Tweet it makes no sense. She is saying that the Obama audience is stupid, not slow moving.
Think how much more effective she would be if she cracked a dictionary, then we could all laugh along.
She is making herself look like an idiot. I’m doing her a nice favour and pointing it out to her. Kinda like if her underwear was showing.

      • Hiraghm

Down south, we call people who have deficient mental capacity “a little slow”. We don’t give them nobel prizes for physics just to make them feel good.

      • Hiraghm

Personally when someones underwear is showing I take them aside privately and let them know quietly about the problem so they don’t get overly embarrassed by it.

        • vonvervengarten

Oh, Then I’ll wait till Ann stops by here to mention the R-word thing.

      • CLASYS

Actually, libtards are by definition slow [and attempting to be steady]. Their tactics are by definition so slow as to fool most people that they are even out there stealing our liberties using the “boiled frog” method.

Thus, the tactics of most progressives is in fact by definition quite retarded.

      • Grumpa Grumpus

        @vonvervengarten:
        You didn’t read far enough.

One that fits is to lag.

And when I applied it to Der Dingleberry himself as I applied it, applies equally to his followers.

That they slavishly follow a philosophy created by people who thought history took a wrong turn and pined for the good old days of absolute monarchy, but packaged the philosophical mechanism to get there is “the little people” is QED to me that they’re not more than a quarter watt bulb in an aircraft hanger.

So, if you’d like to contend that B-O’s followers are idiots, I won’t argue.

Except, that word, too, was used to describe mentally handicapped people (IQ 85 old scale), so you probably shouldn’t use that word either lest you offend someone somewhere.

Perhaps me. I have a granddaughter who is mentally handicapped.

But there are others definitions to Retard, all with the sense of something behind
        the time.

Of course, you’re welcome to grasp at straws as much as you’d like.

    • Brian Bennett

I retarded the timing in my Chevy to keep it from pinging on the cheap gas, because the compression ratio is so high…so my timing IS retarded and I’m not afraid to say it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/W.Eric.Parker Eric Parker

Come on, Twitchy. Choose your battles a little better. Ann Coulter is an ally. I am especially perplexed that she gets vitriol from this website about making fun of “coming out day.” Are gays really sacrosanct? Free speech doesn’t include laughing at gays? I missed that memo. I think this is more about someone’s hatred of Ann Coulter. I hope that someone isn’t Michelle Malkin. I think Ann Coulter could hold her own against Michelle. I would really like them on the same side. Actually, I thought they were.

    • $21367552

What is it with people saying “free speech” is under attack? Nobody said she should not be free to spew out her garbage, and people who don’t like what professional troll Ms. Coulter is spewing out also have the freedom to say that she is a vile classless shrew

      • Hiraghm

Then, by your reasoning, it’s okay for me to call you a PC-worshipping retard for calling her a classless shrew?

        • YeahWeWill

          Well apparently you are.

Oh Geez, AGAIN!!, i’m going to make a ‘semi-sexist’ comment to Miss Coulter (just warning!) – ANN, You’re not “hot enough” or TV charismatic enough to be calling anyone a “retard”.

Once upon a time you were one of the only voices of Conservatism on cable TV news but A LOT has changed in 4 years. There are more “TV Pretty” neo-con writers/analysts available for the Republican POV than Sandra Fluke had show up to her Target Parking Lot rally (more than 10)- You don’t need these “shock tactics” to stay relevant anymore.

I appreciate your past struggles & shining the spotlight of criticism on Liberals back when even Twitter was in it’s infancy but you are flirting with becoming the Neo-Con’s version of pop-star Madonna (as we goof on her today) at the rate you’re going. You’ve been “clever” in the past – stick with that.

  • Stranded in Sonoma

Ann calls them as she sees them.
I’m reminded of the college basketball coach that was accused of running up the score on an opponent. In an angry reply he said, “And if I don’t run up the score I get accused of shaving points. So which one is worse?”
You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. That’s what Romney had to decide at the debate. He decided not to go for the jugular (jug-ears?) and take the high road. Which should be no surprise to 0bama; he knows all about getting high. And anyone that believes in socialism is obviously a retard.
So, why is anyone upset over this truth?

  • Guest

I’m not a fan of Obama, but if this people elected a retard to the country’s highest office, then its majority is a bunch of retards. Just sayin’

  • vonvervengarten

So we are to believe Coulter’s assertion that cancer is non-funny, but children with Down syndrome are hilarious!!
This conservative mother is not putting up with this!

    • Keenan

      Where did she reference children?

    • Chris Yates

Yes, Ann said that children with down’s syndrome are hilarious. She also said that she registered as a Democrat and is Voting O this election.

  • shimauma

ANN sweetie, you could have saved all this heartache by saying “leftarded” I made it up and I’m loaning it to you. “Lefturd/Libturd” is also a favorite of mine as well as “demoncrap” You take those words and run with them; I give you full permission!

    • Chris Yates

If someone is going to be offended by ‘retarded’ then why would ‘leftarded’ make any difference. I don’t find it offensive anyways, I think someone has to choose to be offended by this and that’s sad because like the racist thing, things that are truly offensive get watered down by this.

  • Jaynie59

Oh, this is too funny. Twitchy attacks Ann Coulter and defends Barack Obama.
    Yup. This country is doomed.

    • YeahWeWill

No defense of Obama intended. Just my personal commentary on civility and manners is meant so don’t get your hopes up.

  • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I don’t care for Coulter using that term, but then again I don’t think we need two articles about it. It seems more like a personal vendetta than actually being offended.

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Not only that, it doesn’t do us any good for two of the strongest conservative women we have to be at each others throats.

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Also, the fact that it is the top story on Twitchy the day after a Presidential debate makes me think it is personal

  • Bizness22

There’s a music term called “ritardando” and get this–it means slowing down. Are we going to change that to something else because it might offend people? It DOES mean slowing down but it DOES sound an awful lot like that dreaded “r” word…
By the way, they don’t even use the words “mentally retarded” to describe individuals with that condition anymore, it’s now “intellectually disadvantaged” (at least in my state of California). If IEPs (individualized education plans) no longer use the terminology for special education students, I really don’t think it’s appropriate to get so offended at an outdated term.

    • vonvervengarten

So Ann was saying the crowd in the room was moving, and then slowed down? Oh, OK then.
      Seriously?

      • Bizness22

        You completely missed the point.

        • vonvervengarten

Are we not all adults here? You have to realize that Ann was comparing that crowd to a bunch of developmentally disabled people, plain and simple. You seriously can’t see that?

          • Guest

I doubt the cartoon thought bubble above her head had pictures of developmentally disabled people in it when she was typing that tweet. I really doubt it. I think she was using a word I’ve heard used a lot in describing when someone does something stupid. Like I said in another post, no one uses that word to describe those who are intellectually disadvantaged or handicapped anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I work with special education kids and if I ever catch another kid picking on or insulting a special needs child, they get an earful from me.

          • vonvervengarten

So Ann wasn’t comparing the president to someone with intellectual disabilities then? She picked “retard” to put us in the frame of mind of…who then. Can you enlighten us? If you heard one kid at your school call another a “retard” in front of a child who had special needs, your OK with it then? It’s not crossing the line until “retard” is directed at the actual child.

            Nice.

          • YeahWeWill

            Classy bunch.:(

Ann Coulter’s bombthrowing was tiresome years ago. It’s all about “Look at me! Look at me say provocative things! Look at me making the liberals hate me!” All it accomplishes is giving liberals a cudgel to use against conservatives, because we have to take the time to denounce Ann Coulter’s childishness. The message is lost, but that’s okay, because Ann gets publicity.

    Dear Ann Coulter,

First rule of war…when your enemy is imploding, stay the f*** out of the way and don’t interrupt them.

I personally think Obama and his supporters have forefeited any justification in being offended when his campaign has said the things it has. They’ve called Romney everything from a liar to a felon to a murderer. So while it’s not the choice of words I personally find appropriate, I’m also not going to pretend like it outrages me. The fact is, Obama himself has encouraged this type of mean-spirited dialogue.

    • YeahWeWill

@ Ryan; I am not an Obama supporter however I do believe that we do not stoop to the lowest common denominator and try to maintain some civility.

Words have definitions. It doesn’t mean what you “meant” it to mean, it ‘means’ what the definition says it does. Calling a person retarded indicates that a person with a mental disability is somehow “less than.” Just the same as any other dehuminizing slur. “You N-word” doesn’t mean what I SAY it does, it’s an unacceptable slur… whether I meant it or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T549VoLca_Q

      1) a person with a mental disability IS less than a mentally healthy individual. People aren’t equal. And there’s no tooth fairy.
“retard” has a definition… according to Merriam Webster:

: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede”

Personally, I think she should have chosen a different word, but I’ll no more offended by this than anything else she’s said: her sense of humor tends to be on the mean spirited and sarcastic side. The irony, of course, is that Obama’s special Olympics comments got zero attention.

No, it’s always used to refer to unthinking people whose mental faculties are presumably intact.

The fact is Coulter has to aware of the negative impact of the word or she wouldn’t use it. The terms idiot, imbecile and moron at one time were used to denote varying degrees of retardation. Idiot being the lowest at an IQ of 25 or less. She could have used the word idiotic and nobody would care because it is no longer a clinical term and still gotten her point across. I’m sick of PC crap but it does give the appearance of a lack of sensitivity and just like the one racist at a tea party event she will be held up as the poster child for republicans by the liberal media. You can criticize PCness and try to persuade us the word “retarded” is no longer used but you fool yourselves. My only child’s condition is described and documented as “profound retardation” or in other words, “profoundly retarded.” An insult is an insult – just that simple. If one is incapable of discerning insults in speech then one has no place in polite society. But after all, isn’t that what Ann Coulter is all about anyway? So when she is defended, the defenders declare precisely in what segment of society they have chosen to be included. And then they try to convince you “they’re just words – they’re not used anymore – why be so thin skinned?”

Coulter was & is being foolish by behaving in this manner. I did have respect and admiration for her even though I did not always agree with her. Now she is, unfortunately, not only disparaging herself but also drawing any attention away from the legitimacy of her arguments simply because of this noxiously stubborn desire to cling to her pride. She should step back from it and think about what she is doing to herself before she totally self-destructs, which would be an absolute shame! I think Michelle is right to call her out on this because not only is this behavior unnecessary & harmful to civil discussion, but it is essentially giving ammo to the left to blindly go attack all conservatives with.

Amnesia isn’t even cancer, therefore, “Romnesia” doesn’t refer to him having cancer; it refers to having memory loss. Not appropriate of Obama to accuse of amnesia, but he’s in so deep, he’s just swinging punches at this point. However, surprised no one noticed that amnesia has nothing to do with cancer.

What would people be saying if Ann Coulter had dropped the n word here? Everyone knows that word is used to convey a negative image or lesser intrinsic worth to black people. The word “Retard” is EXACTLY the same when it comes to developmentally delayed people. The word is used to convey that someone is intrinsically less than, of lower worth. Both words are ugly and vulgar and should never be used or accepted. While you may intend to call attention to the stupidity of someone’s actions by calling them retarded, the mental image of that word looks a lot like the school picture of my daughter and her classmates. It looks a lot like the guy who brings in carts at the grocery store. It looks a lot like the “gown woman” carrying the teddy bear with her at the park. This has NOT A SINGLE THING to do with political correctness. It is about human decency. Why not just spit on the next “RETARD” you see? Tell a few more short bus jokes, or one of those hilarious impersonations of the kids in the special ed room. If WE, the folks who live everyday with these challenges, tell you that this word HURTS, that is because it hurts. It isn’t being overly sensitive. It isn’t self pity. It is a simple request to allow us to live our lives in peace and dignity. You don’t have to like us or help us or love us or support us. Please, we have done nothing to you, please don’t hurt us.

Name-calling is childish and unkind. Ann Coulter wears a cross that is supposed to tell the world she is a Christian. Her behavior gives Christianity a bad name; it’s that kind of behavior that leads people to call Christians hypocrites. Ann is a smart woman and generally I agree with her in principle. A letter for Ann The Mann
    Dear Ann Coulter,
Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren’t dumb and you aren’t shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?
I’m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public’s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow. I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.
I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.
Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.
Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift.
Because, Ms. Coulter, that is who we are – and much, much more.
After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.
I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash.
Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.
No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.
Come join us someday at Special Olympics. See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.
A friend you haven’t made yet, John Franklin Stephens

I’m not thin skinned. My son has Trisomy 21. I taught special education. The purpose is to insult by lumping a person with a class of people. It’s wrong. If you can’t see it, just switch the political ideology of the insulted person and see what you think.

Great work Ann…you gave the left the most amazing opportunity to paint conservatives as unfeeling, evil bastards. CNN ran an interview with Ann standing by her epithet that was followed by a live interview with a self advocate with Down syndrome.
Ann couldn’t have been a worse rep. for conservatism. Ann, are you actively trying to turn voters away from Romney? Looks like you are doing a great job!!
