Conan O’Brien’s sidekick Andy Richter weighed in on Donald Trump’s big speech last night to a joint session of Congress, comparing the president to an abusive stepdad and Americans to battered family members:
Abusive Stepdad in Good Mood Last Night; Household Cautiously Optimistic. "Maybe we can be a happy family," Says One of the Battered

We assume Richter is referencing people like Chris Cillizza and Van Jones who gave the president high marks for the speech and think this means there’s a “new Trump” on the way:
Trump is never going to be a brilliant orator but this speech is the best I have seen him.

But is the television comic correct?
The Washington Post’s Robert Costa is reporting that even administration officials within the Trump White House are surprised at how well the president’s speech was received by the pundit class:
Some sources in WH are frankly surprised at how pundits are warming to the speech. Say Trump has not changed, no big shift in policy coming.
— Robert Costa (@costareports) March 1, 2017
And that Trump really hasn’t changed any of his positions:
Their view is that Washington–media and congressional GOP–simply wanted Trump to tone down and talk up a few normal R things. So he did.

And WH knows GOP hawks can't help but embrace Trump's push for military spending. On FP, nodded toward NATO et al, but still wary of world.
