Mitt Romney went there with a joke about @RealDonaldTrump's wives

Mitt Romney, the comedian, was on display last night as he headlined a fundraising dinner for the NRCC, but was this joke about Donald Trump’s past immigrant wives a little out of line? You make the call:

Eek.

Trump is already angry at Ted Cruz over an ad using a racy image from Melania’s modeling days, going as far as to threaten to “spill the beans” on Cruz’s wife in retaliations (the ad is from the Make America Awesome super PAC, not Cruz):

Cruz’s response:

Will Trump take the bait and respond to Mitt’s trolling as well? Stay tuned…

Romney did have another good zinger last night:

Now that’s funny.

According to Roll Call, the dinner raised a record-setting $20.5 million:

NRCC Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore., heralded the record fundraising haul as a sign of the party’s strength at the congressional level come November. “Our goal has always been to maintain and grow our historic Republican majority and with the success of this year’s dinner we are on course to meeting that goal,” he said.

Well done.
