Coats’ looming decision, along with Pence’s flirtation with a presidential run, has been the talk of political circles in recent months. A retirement by Coats will set off a flurry of activity among Republicans seeking to move up, while also potentially giving Democrats more hope of recapturing the seat.
Republicans that could emerge as front-runners for the GOP nomination include U.S. Reps. Marlin Stutzman, Susan Brooks and Todd Rokita, but the field for an open seat would likely expand beyond the usual suspects in Congress. The list could include Eric Holcomb, Coats’ Indiana-based chief of staff and the former chairman of the Indiana Republican Party.
Holcomb has deep ties within the GOP statewide and been credited with strengthening Coats’ relationship with party activists and county leaders, and with putting him in a strong position for reelection.
And all Dem eyes are now on former Senator Evan Bayh to see if he’ll give it another shot:
