A few days ago, MSNBC host Krystal Ball claimed that George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” is now a political parable warning of the dangers of capitalism.

Today, Ball defended herself against conservatives who “lost their minds over that”:

Here’s video of Ball’s explanation followed by a partial transcript:

Partial transcript:

“I know that Orwell’s novel was an allegory of Soviet communism. But to fixate on ‘Snowball is Trotsky’ and ‘Napoleon is Stalin’ is to miss the real profundity of the story. At its heart Animal Farm is about tyranny and the likelihood of those in power to abuse that power. It’s quite clear that tendency is not only found in the Soviet communist experience. In fact, if you read Animal Farm today it seems to warn not of some now non-existent communist threat, but of the power concentrated in the hands of the wealthy elites and corporations.”

Ball went on to describe which of Orwell’s characters were like Mitt Romney and Karl Rove, and to say that the pigs sound as if they believe in trickle-down economics.

Many just aren’t buying it:

Hopefully coming soon:

Oh please let that happen!

He got his own special crazy at the moment, worrying about Republicans using ‘Voodoo Dolls’ on Hillary.

“CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me start off the week with this. The enemies of Hillary Clinton, by that I mean the partisan enemies, have got their voodoo doll. It’s called Benghazi. Every time they put the pin in, they hope it hurts Hillary. Every time they say the word, they hope it scares her. And now they have got a select committee, an official committee of the Congress devoted entirely to putting in the pins. It will endure for months and quite plausibly years as they stick it into Benghazi. And every time they want to hurt the person they fear will loom as unbeatable in 2016. Just listening to the chanting and incantations as they dwell on the incident they hope will puncture the political brand of the former secretary of state. They want her and every voter in the country when they hear the word Benghazi to think Hillary Clinton. It’s become an obsession bordering on cultism among Republicans, with even John Boehner falling under its spell.

You can almost smell the incense. “Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi.” They keep chanting the word until it gets Hillary to fall. Could the cause of this bizarre rite be a secret Republican fear that while Hillary Clinton may be strongly positioned on the center left, they’ve got nobody on center right to stand up to her? Now that Christie’s got stuck on the bridge and Jeb doesn’t know whether he’s going or coming.”

      • Richard StJohn

He should listen to his co workers on morning Joe. Even someone at MSNBC was outraged that Obama was (again) proven a liar. Republicans have been ridiculed for a year for claiming this happened. Now proof comes out and the media downplays it. I guess it’s hard being a sycophant like Matthews. You stand up for your liberal buddies who you honestly believe are second only to God (if one existed) only to be left looking like a fool for having trusted them. Most people are smart enough to realize that liars continue to lie even after being caught. Not Matthews. He still believes Obama and Hillary are pure as driven snow. Hillary was promoting the video story per her emails while the attack was still going on.

It is true that a work of fiction can technically mean anything the reader wishes.

But if the STATED INTENT of the author, as well as the overwhelming consensus of other readers, is diametrically opposite, Ball should not pretend that meaning is anything but her own.

      • Maryland_Malcontent

The New school of literary criticism: the book can mean anything that you can “support” that it means and the only source of corroboration that is out is anything that the author wrote that explains the meaning of the book.

One point she makes is true, any political system is capable of devolving into tyranny… however, if one looks to the Korean penninsula you will find that while capitalism in the south may have the potential to abuse the people… at some time… in the future, all one has to do is look to the north to see what communism has wrought.

Communist oppression destroys nations within decades leaving the people suffering, impovrished and starving while the leaders want for nothing. Yet for all the oppulance that the capitalist rich display for themselves, even under it’s worst abuses, the people of capitalist nations “suffer” far more comfortably than their brothers.

Hollywood as portrayed in Tropic Thunder may have a far more extreme and less self aware definition of “full retard” than a normal human mind is ready for.

I don’t see how anybody could take her seriously, especially with a name like “Krystal Ball”.

Of course, that means she fits right in with MSLSD

  • Sherry M ✓ᵀʰᵉ ˢᑫᵘᵉᵃᵏ

2 legs bad 4 legs good!

  • RD

She should change her name from Krystal Ball to Dim Bulb

    • DC is Evil

      Either that, or Krystal Meth.

      • Ivy_King

        Krystal Blue Persuasion

      • RD

        BAM!!! Priceless! LMAO

  • Michael Rice

So, the book isn’t about what it really is about. it is about what liberals say it is about, right?

  • Pedro Robles

Some other books I would LOVe her to analyze: Charlotte’s Web (it’s Laura Bush!), The Princess Bride (that’s Michelle Malkin & Sean Hannity), Ender’s Game ( Obama in a spacesuit!)

  • Ivy_King

Just realize that somewhere in a universe far, far away, beyond the Van Allen Belt, beyond Uranus….say, on the kos website, lefties are hailing Krystal as a genius.

  • Pedro Robles

Please, don’t let her review the Bible!!! Take that book away from her!!! Because if she tells me that Al Gore is Jesus…I …will…puke!

  • Kimba

I have read this book, And do not concur with her jive

  • http://ITSPEOPLE.com/ Tantalus XVI

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish is about racism, and income inequality. Dr. Seuss . “D” for Democrat, “R” for racism…. yea yea ya see where i’m going with this?

One network is looking for a missing plane, the other is looking for racism in a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch. Never make another Fox News joke again liberals…. you’re done. The shark hath been jumpethed.

  • Robert Emery May

It is always possible to twist the truth, what a waste of a pretty mouth

    • Maryland_Malcontent

Reference to the infamous pictures of her doing, ahem, things with her mouth that helped scuttle her Congress run in 2010?

  • Stephen Carr

How embarrassing. Its sorta what you would expect from her team. But still, it is difficult to watch, but somehow you are drawn to her drawing close to the edge of the cliff. Then wham…. she’s gone.

  • Bouncerquinn

The sad thing is, capitalism is taking a beating because of the highbrow elites(Progressives) in both parties. As a nation, we are not behaving like free market capitalist, but as greedy, lying, thieving fascists(liberals). It’s amazing how the left starts political parties such as the Nazis, Communists, Socialist and starts groups like the KKK and the Aryan Brotherhood, then turns around and claims that such groups are right wing. Every time there is a mass shooting, the left points fingers and screams that they are right wingers. And every time the culprits prove to be liberals. Raised in a family that coddles poor behavior and blames society for everything that is wrong with their children. We need less government and more mom and dad!!

    • Ivy_King

Exactly. And every weekend that 40 Chicagoans get shot, Lefty blames Wayne LaPierre.

  • dawg8195

Oooooo, she used the words “profundity” and “theoretical”. Therefore she MUST be intelligent.

  • Gstephens

Where do Steyer and Soros and Gates and Buffet fit into this supposed expose of “Right Wing” capitalist conspirators? Why, in her make believe world, they are simply fairy godfathers.

  • Golovolomka

Animal Farm was not a critique of Communism per se, but of the Soviet Revolution, which Orwell saw as a betrayal of the idealistic principles on which it was founded.

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

In the allegory, the pigs were the Communist revolutionaries and the farmers were the capitalists, and Orwell was saying that there wasn’t any difference between the two.

Orwell was a left-winger and had little good to say about capitalism.

Ms. Ball’s interpretation is wrong, but so is anybody who tries to make Orwell into a supporter of capitalism.

    • Stevan Fagan

orwell a supporter of capitalism? yes he was , he used the system to become very wealthy , so wealthy that today he would be chastised for being a success and forced to relinquish his hard earned cash flow for the masses.

      • Golovolomka

In his writings, he was a supporter of socialism.

You may see a conflict between his political views and his lifestyle, but that doesn’t change what he wrote.

        • Stevan Fagan

yes you are right , typical lib say one thing do another

    • gjsmith_62

Which group has problems with the word “is”? Seeks to redefine the meaning of words millenia in the making, e.g., marriage? Which group salivates over a “living, breathing Constitution”?

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”

      • Golovolomka

        What is this, trivial pursuit?

Orwell wrote for left-wing papers and was quite open about being a socialist. He was quite critical of people who abused language for political ends, regardless of their leanings.

        • gjsmith_62

Yeah, a socialist who recognized that Marx’s system lead to despotism.

“Of course, in the beginning, this cannot be effected except by means of despotic inroads on the rights of property, and on the conditions of bourgeois production; by means of measures, therefore, which appear economically insufficient and untenable”

          • Golovolomka

I’m not sure why you would be quoting Marx and Engels (the Communist Manifesto) to show us what Orwell thought.

          • gjsmith_62

Socialism is merely the first step towards communism, perhaps you ought to have known that, no?

    • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

As with many socialist dupes, Orwell saw the truth of the outcome but failed to see the truth of its origins in socialism. While he may have intended Animal Farm to be merely a critique of Communists; it was effective in portraying the evils of all variations of socialism.

      • Golovolomka

You see it as a critique of socialism, and Ms. Ball sees it as a critique of capitalism. Both of you are following the same fallacious reasoning, letting your own personal ideologies cloud your ability to relate to the book in a serious way.

  • Robert Hutson

    Beautiful idiot….

  • Melody Lanzatella

Abusing power? Yeah, you mean obama right? I agree, he does abuse his power!

  • kevinh5

We used to call cops P.I.G. Pigs, wonder why? Guess what Krystal Ball, it is the government run schools, IRS, FBI, Pimp Judges, and Liberals, etc. in bed with corporate welfare that are the PIG Communists destroying the Private Sector Middle Class tax payers! Anyone other that a private sector middle class independent is a parasite PIG!

  • reddarin

So concentration of power is the modern lens cautionary tale but Mr. Pen And Phone doesn’t make the list of things to be skeered of?

  • Stevan Fagan

  • Eddie frOly

Wow not a single communist country is run through tyranny? So I guess people in Cuba come here on make shift boats because Communism is so awesome. And let’s not forget Venezuela or any of the African countries and all the Islamic Republic’s out there are a religious rebranding of communism/Marxism. All run by tyrants. I think she might be qualified to teach common core political science or social studies.

  • Frank Schoner

Discussing Animal Farm is at latest, Freshman level high school reading. Because, you know, it’s extremely easy to analyze. So apparently, this bimbo didn’t get her job because she impressed her boss with brain power. Then again, we are talking about MSNBC here..

  • chiefpontiac

Warning of concentrated power huh? Like Obama’s pen and phone? Oh, he’s a Marxist so the concentration of power is just fine with you, right? Oh, and by the way Krystal Ball, Snowball was killed because he didn’t go along with the program. Only left wing governments kill when people don’t go along with the program…In America, only left wing, Marxist, Progressives favor forcing people to do what they feel is what’s best for them. With a name like Krystal Ball you should go back to pole dancing at the Spearmint Rhino where you can actually do some good….

  • J-

I got about 90 seconds into it and developed a real bad taste in my mouth. At first I thought it was having a stroke, then I realized it was just my brain shitting itself at the thought that she could have gotten a job as a TV pundit and not passed 10 grade English.

  • chetnapier

The non-existent commie threat resides at 1600 penn

  • Riordan Kynes

You know where she gets it from, since only a couple lefty parents with the last name Ball would name their daughter Krystal.

  • Jason

Isn’t it nice that Serkis clown and this bimbo can just rewrite the book to fit their simple thoughts. Animal Farm warned us about these pigs.

  • goots151x

Opps, my bad, she used ‘profundity’ in a real sentence, and everything. So it’s all good now.

  • Diggur

First of all, if a person calls herself Krystal Ball it is very difficult to take her seriously. Second, it’s also very difficult for me to believe that anyone can ignore the billionaire puppet masters behind the leftist doctrine in this country. George Soros is just one of many. What about the corrupt unions pouring money into the Democrat coffers in return for favors? What about corporations like GE that don’t pay any taxes because they donate to Obama? Please tell me, Krystal, why it is that you consider Conservatives corrupt, and you consider the Fascists in our government the good guys.

    • prado4587

I hate it when the liberal trolls get on here on try to attack successful financiers and corporations who have the foresight to implement good tax planning in order to reduce the transfer of shareholder wealth to Nobama. Take your class warfare somewhere else.

      • Diggur

Excuse me, I am not a “liberal troll”. I’m the least liberal person
that you’ll ever run across. You’re obviously confusing corporatism
with capitalism. In a capitalist society every person has the
opportunity to build a business based upon their hard work,
intelligence, and foresight. Corporatism is when one corporation is
favored above others to become a monopoly by a government that is
rewarding them for campaign cash and favors. GE is an excellent example
because Obama not only gives them huge, illegal tax breaks, (this has
nothing to do with their good planning except by virtue of their massive
campaign donations), but he also made halogen light bulbs illegal so
that they could have a monopoly on selling their mercury bulbs. Which
is pretty amazing since Obama is supposed to be an environmentalist, and
the mercury bulbs are much worse for the environment than the halogen
bulbs. Corporatism is what should be condemned by the American people,
and capitalism should be encouraged because capitalism built the
greatest country in the world. Now do you understand what I was saying?

        • PhilJourdan

Correction. They are legal breaks. Immoral? Probably. Unethical? Most likely. But congress has figured out a way around the Constitution equal protection clause (they are mostly lawyers after all).

    • Maryland_Malcontent

The name itself is laughable but the picture that went viral of her a while back wrapping her mouth around a phallic object affixed to a man’s nose at some party just cracks me up.

  • AZWarrior

Egads, wonder what she thinks Thomas Paine’s ‘Common Sense’ was about?

  • mzk1_1

My impression of Animal Farm was that Orwell was saying that the socialists had become just like the capitalists. While in 1984 he went further, and realized they were just like the fascists.

  • Lucian

Ugh… I can’t imagine people listen to that screech for longer than a few minutes. What a shrill, lunatic harpy.

  • AlmaAlma

  • russ williams

“… a now non existent communist threat?” Give me a non existent freaking break.

  • derfelcadarn

How does anyone with so limited an intellect get employment in “journalism”?

    • HerodiousPeaskinner

It’s MSNBC after all. Limited everything is required.

    • bicentennialguy

      You answered your own question.

  • Gallatin

In fact, if you read Animal Farm today it seems to warn not of some
now non-existent communist threat, but of the power concentrated in the
hands of the wealthy elites and corporations.”

Sure some examples come to mind:

georgie soros, tommy steyer, leftist hollyweirdians, leftist water carrying media companies, mikey moore, barack obowmao, dirty dingy slithering snake harry reid, nancy pelosi. I can do this all day krystal ball but I have to go take a Capitalist break.

  • Christopher Crowley

Krystal Ball is a facist in the true sense. She is saying up is down and down is up. George Orwell wrote the book “Animal Farm” to warn of the true evil of socialism and communism, but Kyrstal Ball twists and lies about the book, manipulating it into her statist agenda. She is totalitarian in the true sense. MSNBC should be ashamed of allowing such a clear liar appear on their network.

  • jabberwocky

Does she know she actually works & gets paid by the 1%?

  • reardenmetal

those who control the present control the past….

  • reardenmetal

oh and of course there had to be a bush on the farm

  • Guest

Holy cow is this lady missing the mark! “Now non-existent communist threat” Huh? Lady, welcome to 2014 in America – capitalism isn’t the problem – it’s your Dear Leader and the extremists who’ve seized control of the Democrat Party.

“Self-serving nonsense” Lady, listen to your own rant!

  • PhilJourdan

I guess MSNBC has to hire morons as no one will work for a sinking ship.

As for her name, lots of kids were born to hippies. Condoms were not free even if the love was.

  • Oscar

She looks to Romney to back up her claims? Who is in office? Who is helping their friends get richer with taxpayers $$?

  • PeacefulConservative

So what is her take on “Atlas Shrugged”?

    • larrybud

I’m sure how the greed of the few can have an implication on the “common good”.

  • Albert Schmitlap.

This Female is an idiot. She doesn’t even realize that it is the Liberals that use that phrase to push their Global Warming BS. She is SOOOOO dense.

  • Rogue Cheddar

Non-existent communist threat? I think the Ukraine may differ on that.

    • PhilJourdan

Out of sight, out of mind. They have no clue what a Ukraine is, so it does not exist.

  • Stephen L. Hall #NonquamTrump

“At its heart Animal Farm is about tyranny and the likelihood of those in power to abuse that power. . . . In fact, if you read Animal Farm today it seems to warn . . . of the power concentrated in the hands of the wealthy elites and corporations” – Krystal Ball

“Brilliant, . . . once again you’ve put your keen and penetrating mind to the task and as usual come to the wrong conclusion.” – Sirius Black

Tyranny of those in power likely to abuse that power perfectly describes, Obama and cronies, the would be communists of the left . . . those very people Krystal Ball adores.

  • Hal von Luebbert

If I were a woman today, being represented before the nation by dingbat dimwits like this, I think I’d wear a burka – or never leave the house. Folks, most women – certainly the women I know – are so far more intelligent than the pantyhose pundits television foists up us, that one like me has to suspect a plot – in that “war against women” about which we hear so often.

  • http://granitegrok.com/author/mike Mike Rogers

She’s wrong on capitalism, but not so wrong on wealthy elies – the Dem RINO elites certainly think that they are “more equal than others” – just look at all the attempts to enact incumbency protection (Campaign finance laws which restrict speech by challengers)

  • danthenurse

Guys…folks!..C’mon, it’s MSNBC for cryin’ out loud. it’s not like we’re talking about any credibility here…..this is a farce.

  • Trudy Hill

    she missread the cliff notes

  • Trudy Hill

    Krystal LOLL

  • religionandhistory

Looks like Jay Carney perhaps isn’t the only Progressive spokesperson with the usual Soviet Propaganda posters in the kitchen and sparse bookshelves packed with books they never read , did not even possess ! 1984 gave us a glimpse into our future ! Nothing more than this visionary of an illiterate Socialist utopia Krystal Balls un-profound profundity is needed as proof Orwells warning is timeless and true ! A Krystal Ball , don’t laugh , likely the most reliable technology MSNBC has !

  • Hannibal

Krystal Ball thought Peter Pan was a chamber pot.

  • gthreepwood85

I suppose Gulag Archipelago was a prescient foreshadowing of the contemporary American prison system, as well?

  • writeonbrother

I hear she has a nice rack.

  • justobservant

So apparently, it doesn’t matter what the author intended; it’s whatever the reader decides is the message that counts? Hm. “It means just
what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

  • Concerned

So based on Krystal Ball’s take on the book then she works for an Elitist Pig so that would make her….what?

  • Jedd McHead

@beirutbythelake = best tweet, re “Atlas Shrugged”. I, too, would love to hear the deluded Left take on that conservative classic.

Btw, has anyone ever told Krystal Ball that she has a total “porn name”?

  • Rusty catania

Krystal makes a tremendous amount of money reading a script and talking in front of a camera. that’s capitalism baby. if she wants people to spread the wealth…. I think she should lead by example

  • inveniam

I find it interesting that she mentions Luntz and Rove but not Gibbs, Carney or Axelrod. I also find it interesting she does not talk about Crony Capitalism–where profits come by the force of Government…. Profits which then are taken to the airwaves as adds on her TV show, faux science at the Academy, and bundled to re-elect the same bozos who provide the force for the profits.

  • Justwaitinforchange

She is a shill straight out of “1984” – which, according to Ball, is about the tea party and conservatives.

  • Justwaitinforchange

I am also happy that she continues to reinforce how incredibly stupid or vapid or mindless MSNBC hosts are.

  • murraydad

    Orwell actually predicted this.

  • jdog

Uhh it’s the conservatives who are confused… Animal Farm is clearly an
indictment of capitalism. Right. Complains about people making fun of
her name (“She’s not a stripper.”) But she demonstrates every day that
she has all the brain power required of a stripper. Another example of a
fine liberal arts education. Build a better moron.

    • bicentennialguy

      It’s not a stripper name – it’s a drag queen name!!

  • bicentennialguy

Makes one wonder what she thinks Moby Dick is about.

    • Target4Tyrants

      Ha! The big black ….

  • Marc

“In fact, if you read Animal Farm today it seems to warn not of some now non-existent communist threat,”….really?…non-existent? Guess Putin doesn’t really exist, Ukraine is an imaginary part of MiddleEarth. But hey, this after all comes from the minds at PMSNBC….need I say more?

  • Target4Tyrants

What planet is this chick from? She’s lucky she’s soo damn hot, otherwise she would be asking “you want fries with that?”

  • Bruce

I do have to agree with her. Animal Farm is an excellent warning about too much power being in the hands of people like Soros, and the corporate empires run by other such powerhungry leftists.

  • Mark C Austin

I guess she doesn’t realize that her “explanation” above was not about the wealthy 1%,but about the POTUS and his Libtard minions! And could she have picked a WORSE stripper name!?

  • Madcat151

she got her job on her knees.

    • Derek

…or someone else got a job while on her knees. Same difference, but I couldn’t help myself.

      • Tom Winegar

A case can be made that some people use knee pads for things other than roofing.

  • Martin Riggs
  • sizemorew

I already have a migraine. The bizarre mental gymnastics of this explanation was more than enough to make it hurt that much worse. Ugh.
