Cover Oregon, the state’s Obamacare exchange, was a train wreck from the start and just kept getting worse.

KATU reporter Chelsea Kopta had the news today that Cover Oregon will likely fold, and what state officials plan to do with the unspent federal money (spoiler alert: It doesn’t involve giving it back to federal taxpayers).

Exactly how much federal money did Cover Oregon spend on the colossal failure?

So Cover Oregon hadn’t yet spent all the federal money, which leads to the question of the day:

And the unsurprising answer:

They can just keep it? A little bonus for all the failure?

We’ll have to wait and see about that.

When it goes, Cover Oregon will take with it millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars, but leave behind one of the weirdest promotional ads of all time:

    Oracle & Deloitte Consulting LLP donated millions to democrats, and they got this fat contract.

    I found the donation information on the Open Secrets site, and the CoverOregon web site’s main CSS file has:

    /* =============================================================================

    /* ===== DOCUMENT INFO

    * ===== NAME: global.css

    * ===== VERSION: v0.5

    * ===== UPDATED: 2/1/2013

    * ===== AUTHOR: Deloitte Consulting LLP (Nina Mokoosio & Mike Jackson)

    * ===== CLIENT: Oregon Health Insurance Exchange (OR-HIX)

    The site itself looks like a very generic, out of the box wordpress style site template..I’m checking to see.

    The most expensive web site I have ever worked on (for a large bank in Chicago) was not even $50,000, all costs out the door.

    Add:

    $284 million / $150 per hour (programming) = 1,893,333 hours, or 2591 months, or 215 YEARS in programming time.

    If they had a 100 programmers working on the site, (typically it’s less than 4), it means they must have been programming for 24 hours a day for 25 months straight.

    • Perso Nasplit

      double that for security, then double that for backup/redundancy, then double THAT because its the government. Still shouldnt have cost 500k.

    They should have to give back the remaining funds as it will take 4 to 6 mil to absorb Oregon into the federal website. (BTW, the decision to give up the OR site was due to the estimation that it would take 78 mil to fix.)

        I think it’s the $1.9 billion Obama gave Oregon for their Medicaid experient in 2012. You know, back when unemployment was only 8.2% and Obama had only spent us $5 trillion into debt. :-)

        “Feds to put up $1.9 billion for Oregon health-care overhaul”
        http://seattletimes.com/html/health/2018136257_orehealth04.html

        The Obama administration is buying into an ambitious health-care initiative in Oregon, announcing an agreement to chip in $1.9 billion over five years to help get the program off the ground.

        “If this works, I think other states are going to be looking at this as a way to manage that patient population,” said Kitzhaber, a Democrat and former emergency-room physician who has worked for decades on changing the health-care system.

        Yep, $1.9 BILLION dollars on an “IF”. :rolleyes:

      When will Salon, Think Progress, Media Matters, and the rest of the left-wing sites report on the racial slurs directed at black Republicans from left-wingers? There was a Democrat in Alabama who called Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom.” No reports on that on left-wing sites. And Bundy’s racist tirade doesn’t change the fact that the government was overreaching by sending snipers and armed personnel to his ranch. He’s a racist, but he still has rights (just ask the Black Panthers who intimidated voters in 2008 and were protected by Eric Holder who dropped the charges).

      Also, when will left-wing sites and news sources call out the NAACP for sitting by and not raising a stink about racial slurs towards black Republicans?

      Plus, Twitchy goes by tweets.

    • Markward

      Get back to us when you actually say something about all the times your side have called black conservatives “uncle toms” and the number of times derogatory names for women have been used on folks like Sarah Palin.

    “MD votes to adopt health exchange software used in Connecticut — $40 million-$50 million contract being negotiated with Deloitte Consulting” April 2, 2014
    http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2014-04-02/health/bs-hs-exchange-board-vote-20140401_1_isabel-fitzgerald-new-website-federal-exchange

    The board overseeing Maryland’s health exchange voted unanimously Tuesday evening to scrap its dysfunctional website and adopt software developed by Deloitte Consulting and used by the more successful health exchange in Connecticut.

    The software is free for Maryland to use but Health Secretary Joshua M. Sharfstein will negotiate an emergency $40 million to $50 million contract with the software company to develop the site.

    The state has spent tens of millions of dollars on the existing site and now plans to ask the federal government for more money and its blessing to develop the new website. The exchange also might need up to $3 million in start-up money from the state for the new website.

    Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller questioned why government officials oversaw the creation and launch of the website rather than somebody from the private sector with information technology experience.

    But fixing the current site would have cost $66 million and taken a year to complete, putting the state beyond the next open enrollment period, exchange officials said in a memo. Moving to the federal site would have cost as much as $53 million…

    The website crashed immediately after launching Oct.1 and has been riddled with technical problems ever since. The exchange’s executive director resigned under pressure, and officials later fired the website’s main contractor, Noridian Healthcare Solutions, because of the problems.

    The state has spent $125 million in mostly federal funds on the exchange, including about $55 million to Noridian

    • mrspinky85
