A portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was closed today after an ugly accident this morning:

That part of the Turnpike is expected to be opened again shortly.

Fortunately there were no fatalities, though there were numerous injuries:

    Jaw dropping…

The fact that there were no fatalities was stunning.

seems to match the 40 car pileup in Painesville, OH (outside Cleve) on Christmas eve

Thoughts and prayers to those affected in this pile up. Hope none of the injuries were life altering.

it also says a lot for vehicle safety, with all the carnage, nobody died. way to go modern engineering!

As busy as the picture indicates, all it takes is one car sliding on ice to create a chain reaction. I wish all those who were injured a speedy recovery.

it also requires all the others to be following too close. four wheel drives can start, but they still don’t make four wheel ice brakes. on dangerous days, most of the cars in the ditch are snooty four wheel drive owners.

        All too true, I’m afraid.

  • The Masked Avatar

Well, there’s your problem right there.

Roads were crappy this morning. They were snow covered but underneath they were slick as snot. I was happy to make it to work safely.

Exactly why I moved to the South. I could not handle one more winter in Pittsburgh–despite having grown up there. No icy roads here!

    Lancaster County PA, huh?
Might want to check whether these hooligans have alibis:

    • DeadlockVictim

Had considered asking how many horses had to be shot after the pileup, but this covers the same territory nicely.

I don’t know what’s worse… the accident or the nail fungus add next to the photo.

Wow thats not any fun and thank the goodness there were no fatalities. Apparently we had 50+ accidents in like 3 hours when a bit of snow came through NH today. It’s unreal to me that people can’t just slow down in bad weather.

    • DeadlockVictim

Likely more than a few were Flatlanders emboldened by their 4WD vehicles with anti-lock brakes.

      • Txgirlinnh

        Lol for sure.

PennDOT is currently widening the entire Turnpike to six lanes and realigning some sections, but it’s a long process. Hopefully it will at least make incidents like this a little less dangerous.

I’ve taken a few drives out to Ohio on the Turnpike (I get on at Valley Forge) and it always seems like once I get east of Reading on the way back I have to really be on my guard. It’s almost as if the other drivers are *trying* to kill me.
