Would stricter gun laws have prevented today’s shooting at Los Angeles International Airport? Former talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael thinks so.

https://twitter.com/susanlpressler/status/396406444024532992

Unless of course having a gun makes you feel more safe.

It is a good question, because there are strict laws against that (not to mention laws against murder). Maybe more laws will help, according to Raphael.

Wow. Sally Jessy actually taught me something today. Granted, it was that she is still alive, but that’s something, right?

    • Lexikin

Right??!?!?! That’s the first thing that went through my mind! LOL!

    • mickeyco

      Talk about useless information.

      • Vitiosum

Yes, pretty useless. However, when I was a young teen, I really enjoyed listening to her late at night on a.m. radio. I seemed to be the only teen that knew anything about talk radio at 13. She is actually the first one I found and I give her credit for opening that particular part of of my life to talk radio. It’s a shame she is what she is now, but I learned a valuable lesson, from there I was able to find talk radio of all kinds and now I know how to listen calmly to most talk radio. I was a bit surprised to find that she was still alive.

        • Vitiosum

And then I found Dr. Ruth Westheimer! Yikes!

          • mickeyco

            No! You’ve recovered haven’t you?

          • Vitiosum

            Absolutely, but barely!

California already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.

      “Yes, I am.”
“Well then, better tell me what you got.”
Smith says, “Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There’s a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I’ve got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot.”
“Okay,” the cop says, “Anything else?”
“Yeah, back in the trunk, there’s an AR15 and a shotgun. That’s about it.”
“Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range…?”
      “Nope.”
“Well then, what are you afraid of…?”
      “Not a damn thing…”

    Uh, he walked in.

    (Perhaps we should ban walking?)

It was bound to happen someday. You can’t get into a Russian airport terminal without going through a security checkpoint – all bags are scanned and people have to go to go through metal detectors.

Surest way to prevent a wacko from shooting up an airport: Remove the ‘gun free zone’ and ‘I’ll meet no resistance’ thoughts from the mind of the wacko.

    • MrRichPeoples

Are you suggesting that airports should no longer be ‘gun free zones’?

    • aztectrumpet

Im fine with it being gun-free besides air marshals. Can’t afford to have just anyone have a gun on a plane.

      • Ken Alan Draper

yes let’s limit the gun carrying to U.S. gub’ment officials & those criminals who are a little smarter then puff daddy & shaniqua the TSA screeners who spent the majority of their time feeling up grandma & the 4 year old girl.

    • TopCat_Texas

OK, where is exactly the right mix?
      1) I think that for one, every airport in the US should have the same rules, namely because the passenger does not always know where the plane is going to land, especially in cases of emergency or weather.
      2) I think that CCW people should be allowed to carry in the public part of the airport (parking lots, lobby, outside secured areas)
      3) I think that there should be a way to check guns for travel that is not different in every state. The issue is that if you plane connection in say “New Jersey” is canceled and you need to pick up your bags and take them to another airline, maybe the next day. You could be forced to violate NJ state laws the minute you pick up your bags and that is not fair or just.
      4) Not sure there is anything to fix in the airplane, probably a case could be made of more air marshals and off duty police to carry.

      • Ranba_Ral

Recall reading a news article a week or so ago about #3 happening, but in New York. Guy is looking at serious jail time for violating their laws, and he was never even originally supposed to be in the state, and got gigged for declaring his weapons like he did at his point of origin.

    • mickeyco

But if she loses her glasses, she loses her trademark white rabbit look.

  • Texan357

Because outlawing murder stopped murder. Similarly rape, robbery / burglary… It bears repeating… “Outlaw guns, and only outlaws will have guns.” Also – when you need a police officer, one is only minutes away, but when you need to defend yourself, your firearm is only seconds away. I and my beloved .357 (which forms my namesake) ensure the safety of myself and my family. Nothing else. I think it has to do with a mentality of eternal dependence upon a sort of parental figure (in this case, the government) versus the hard-core, rugged individual merit that made this country, and its people, the best in the world. The “I don’t NEED you” (paging Piers Morgan) mentality versus the “WE ARE ALL JULIA” cradle-to-grave dependency that rightly disgusts adults.

This is such a under-emphasized point. Murder is illegal. I am a supporter of the 2nd amendment and absolutely condemn murder.

Laws agains murder have not deterred violent criminals from committing violent crimes, including murder. I am quite certain that stronger gun control laws will only leave life and law respecting civilians vulnerable and leave the violent criminals, who have no respect for life or laws, in a more powerful position.

  • Markward

Sorry, you do not have the right to feel safe, as there is no way to be 100% safe. The act of living is a risk. Cells dividing can have a shift or deletion and that will result in a mutation that will lead to cancer. Going outside introduces cars, rapist, muggers, lighting strikes, and dog attacks to name a few things that can happen.

The only thing you can do is understand that there is reasonable risks, and prepare for those risks that are unreasonable. People who carry know that if something should happen, they may very well become the first responder- because we know that the world is not a safe place.
