Perhaps an alternate headline could be “President Obama preps Africa for arrival of numerous Chevy Volt dealerships”:

The stated goal is to expand the reach of power grids and to develop wind, geothermal, hydro and solar power, and some tweeters know what that could mean: Sub Saharan Solyndra, here we come!

Tweeters offered other thoughts:

If the Obama administration’s energy plan for Africa is anything like it is for the United States, more people in sub Saharan Africa may end up with greater access to power, but they won’t be able to afford it … necessarily.

Speaking of laying out billions, whatever happened to the sequester?

I assume the $7M is more money we’re borrowing from our dear Chinese friends?

    • nc

      It’s $7 Billion, with a B.

      • GaryTheBrave

Sorry. I didn’t see your message. Great minds think alike.

      • bidentime

Yes, $7mill wont even buy a decent vacation for this president.

      I wish it was just $7-million. It’s $7-BILLION!

    • Zach Smith

The US Treasury contains nothing but IOUs. The money will have to be borrowed.

    • jukin

I told you the $100 million would be least chunk of money thrown away by the JEF but this blows away the $5,000 billion I estimated.

Spending our money AGAIN? Doesn’t an amount this big have to be approved by Congress?

Taken from the Bloomberg source above:

“Officials declined to put a price tag on the total effort and didn’t specify how much of the $7 billion in government resources Congress would need to appropriate for the initial phase. The sum isn’t all straight assistance and includes money from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Overseas Private Investment Corp., the Export-Import Bank and other agencies, they said.”

Maybe we should make sure OUR clean energy projects are successful before investing in another country’s.

    • Bathing Suit Area

Most of them were successful, you just only ever heard the name of one that wasn’t.

      • Karl Winrich

Or better yet we can put that money into our horribly failing public education system, or maybe help the homeless and hungry.

Bottom line is we need to fix our house and then we can worry about everybody else.

        • Bathing Suit Area

But putting money into public education is giving into the teacher’s union thugs, and helping the hungry is evil socialism.

          • Karl Winrich

Simple way to fix that then, School Vouchers. Give the parents a choice of where to send their children to so they can get a decent education. Besides the teachers unions are only about indoctrinating our children into their failure of a system instead of actually teaching them anyways.

And when I refer to feeding the hungry I’m not referring to sending that money to the hopeless, those people who’s allegiance to the Democrats have been bought with food and cell phones, people with a perpetual victim mentality, people who prefer to sit at home doing nothing because they discovered that they can actually make more by collecting food stamps and welfare: you know – leaches. No I mean using that money to establish food distribution centers where the destitute can come in out of the weather and actually get a hot meal once in a while. Send that money to non-profits and charity groups that will use it to supply aid to the truly helpless, people who literally have nowhere else to turn to.

If were going to create social programs then they at least need to be targeted to help the people who need it the most, the destitute, not the bought.

If you’re actually gonna spend that kind of money during sequester ….. then at least spend that money on AIDS care and prevention, instead, you fool! How stupid can you be???

    • digitalPimple

This is crony payoffs to his campaign buddies.

    • Bathing Suit Area

Of course, as soon as he spends a cent on aids prevention you’ll start screaming about “personal responsibility”.

  • ObamaFail

The sequester was allegedly so damaging to our economy that our troops can no longer get hot meals. White House tours can’t stay open. Aircraft carriers were docked. And several other things that we allegedly don’t have money for anymore because of the sequester.
But we have money to send $1.5 billion to Egypt. $700 million to Russia to develop an airforce for the Afghani soldiers. Now $7 billion to Africa for energy purposes. Not to mention the $100 million vacation he is enjoying with his family.
Is the sequester really that bad? Or was it intentional cuts to try to hurt Americans just to prove a point and stomp his foot like a petulant child so he can point the finger and say, “blame those poopy-headed Republicans!”

    • Squirrel!

It’s the leveling the playing field. Bringing America down while giving the 3rd World a hand up. We knew this, but the other 50% of us didn’t and mostly still don’t.

What advantages would a continent which has not evolved past the 7th century accrue with the wonders of electricity?

They’ll never see it. Let alone have the chance to use it.

Sounds like lame ground cover for another massive arms deal to reveal how deeply tribalism is ingrained in a people.

    • Bathing Suit Area

Great job invoking tribalism in a comment which otherwise boils down to “those people over there are dumb!”

  • Dale Marsh

I call bs on this . im trying to get 1 MILLION dollar grant to start a business. and the shit you have to go through is unreal im applying to about 30 grants to get the money and is taking months and months to do. guess I should just say I have a country and I could get money

    • Bathing Suit Area

What sort of business? Why are you looking to big government to help you out?

      • Stan

So he will lose your money instead of his own.

  • fed-up

So then he is insane. Doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. This is absolutely absurd.
Seems sequester doesn’t have an bearings on us lending billions to countries that hate us.

And where does O plan to get the 7 billion dollars when so many Americans have been out of work for so long and a large portion not paying taxes of any kind. We don’t have $7.00 to give to anyone let alone 7 billion.

    • Ronald Green

He’s going to borrow it from…. somewhere. It think the Chinese have cut him off, so where that somewhere will be is…. scary.
