Window washers in New York City are in an unenviable and frightening position this afternoon:

Here are some photos from the scene. FDNY reports two stranded washers, while other reports have said one person is stranded:

You’d be hard-pressed to find many people willing to trade places with the stranded worker:

We’re hoping for the best for him as well as firefighters attempting a rescue:

Update: Rescued!

Gee, this could cost taxpayer dollars. Obviously we need to do away with glass skyscrapers and heavily regulate window-washing, or maybe outlaw it altogether. /sarc

I wouldn’t do that job even if Hell did freeze over. Uh-uh, nosiree!

you wouldn’t get me up there either not a chance.

I’m a bit surprised they cut through the glass, I would have expected repelling from the top or something. “At least” this happened “only” on the 46th story instead of the top of the new WTC (those pics were a doozy too).

Man, that’s a lot of Windex right there.

Also that’s my old ‘hood. I watched that building being built from my window.

When I saw this story, the first thing I thought of was my late grandfather, who was a window washer in NYC for a number of years when he came to the United States. He got a large settlement because of something similar happening to him — scaffolding broke down, a rope wrapped around his arm, and he had permanent muscle and nerve damage in the arm after that.
