Deal partner Ayatollah Khamenei says it's a delusion to think Iran and America can get along

Obama administration deal partner Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is keeping a close eye on America’s presidential campaign, and while Donald Trump has confessed it would be difficult to “rip up” the Iran nuclear deal if he were elected, Khamenei has threatened to set fire to it if the next U.S. president reneges on the agreement.

Of course, there’s nothing to rip up or burn, as there’s no formal treaty. There’s not much of anything, really, except a lot of money and Iran’s word to allow international inspectors to have a look around now and then, as long as they give plenty of advance notice so Iran’s nuclear scientists can tidy up.

Critics contend that the freeing of some hostages could have been worked into the agreement, but as Secretary of State John Kerry later explained, “it was important not to hold a nuclear agreement hostage to hostages.

Reuters reports that Khamenei is already grumbling about the historic deal:

Khamenei noted that sanctions had not been completely lifted, issues with Iranian banks had not been resolved and that Iranian money that was being kept in other countries had not been returned.

“The nuclear deal has holes which, if they were closed, would reduce or cancel its disadvantages,” he said.

He added: “Some think that we can get along with the Americans and solve our problems. This is an incorrect idea and a delusion.”

If the U.S. forces Khamenei to set fire to the agreement, celebrities like Jack Black and Morgan Freeman, who lobbied for the Iran deal on behalf of anti-nuke organization Global Zero, are going to be very upset that their hard work meant nothing.
