Several media outlets are reporting that two police officers in Brooklyn were critically injured when a lone gunman reportedly ambushed them in their patrol car and shot each officer.

There is an unconfirmed report that the shooter had posted his intentions on Instagram in advance.

Very bad news:

The alleged killer has reportedly taken his own life.

New York Times police reporter J. David Goodman has the name of the suspect, which should be confirmed at a press conference soon. Reports that the shooter may have been a gang member involved in a murder in Baltimore are emerging.

The New York Daily News reports that the suspect’s name is Ismaaiyl Brinsley. Brinsley allegedly drove to New York City from Baltimore after wounding his girlfriend there. A member of her family told the Daily News Brinsley shot her in the stomach, but she was expected to survive.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill di Blasio addressed the press around 7:45 p.m., with both calling the killings an “assassination.”
