It sounds like country star Blake Shelton was trying to resist the charms of Olympic curling but has at last succumbed. Liking curling isn’t such a bad thing, is it?

Will curling fever sweep the nation?

Well, if you’re a woman, you don’t need to be a witch to have a broom, do you, if you’re seriously into curling? For guys– eh, it’s like bowling, a sip-o’-beer-between-frames kinda horsing around deal, but the gals? They’re serious!

    • Winger

And more than a few are gorgeous 😀

      • John

        Russian woman’s team…nummy.

      • Blake Waymire

More than a few? Nearly all of the women I’ve seen on the coverage in general are gorgeous, particularly the curlers, snowboarders, and skiers (Julia Mancuso in particular is a babe).

When you get to watching it, though, curling is a fantastically technical sport. I admit I’ve gotten interested in it and now it’s one of my go-to events along with the skiing and snowboarding.

        • Eric

Kinda hard to be a world-class athlete and not be in good physical shape. Not like fake airbrushed models, these are real women.

          • Blake Waymire

It’s really not the physical shape I’m talking about. You can be in good physical shape and still unattractive. The women in this Winter Olympics are just beautiful in general, and would still be if they weren’t athletes. Most of them seem to be nice people, too (I’m reminded of the slopestyle girls who were in the finish area of their course and hugging and dancing with each other when the medal times were announced).

          • Eric

            Very true too!

I think part of the charm is that it’s easier for the average viewer to relate to it. It looks easy. In that sense, it’s like the Bing Crosby of Olympic sports.

      • therealguyfaux ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

It’s like the weightlifters in the Summer Games– you think, “Jeez, some of them are real lard-o’s!”, but then, you realize, they STILL hafta have a lotta upper-body strength and development despite the paunch. The real top-level competition men’s curlers are pretty fit guys, which they need to be, just from a stamina-not-fading standpoint from all the moving and sweeping they do over the course of the two hours of the competition. It’s the weekend curler guys from Moose Turd, Maine, who are the beer-sippers, if the truth were known.

Gonna be a lot a broken hearts when Canada beats everybody at this. 😉 (Glancing at the web.) Or maybe not.

    • John

Canadian woman just beat Sweden 9-3. 2 wins, no loses.

    • kssturgis62

With Jennifer Jones she is the Favorite to win the Gold and she is from Canada.

brad jacobs out of the sault in Canada lost to the Swiss, and most likely will lose to Sweden but should be in the Medals unless Great Britain messes them up. Also Norway on the Mens side is really good.

Schuster for the USA not a chance, and Erica Brown for the USA she won a medal a few years back, but she needs help also.

  • John

And the Russian woman just beat USA 9-6, their second loss.

    • TJCrane_NCC1701

Sad to hear. Especially if it was our womens team from the last 2 Olympics. I forget the 2 sisters names but I love to watch them ,-)

      D’OH! Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Darticus

    It’s like big ass shuffleboard

  • stuckinIL4now

I got into curling several Olympics ago and try to never miss it. Conveniently, it’s on when I’m up and getting ready for work like USA men’s hockey will be.

  • carmenta

I’d like to try curling up with Blake Shelton…

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

      You’ll have to ask (his Wife) Miranda (Lambert) first… #MusicTriviaTime XD Jawamax 8<{D}

    • John Castigo

      Ooooh, bee-hayve!

    • nc ✓s & balances

Now that’s an Olympic sport I like!

  • Right Wired ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

I sweep & mop enough at home, I should be an All Star at this.

  • Republicanvet

When I was much younger and played hockey, our team went over the border to play a little town in Manitoba.
After we were dressed and ready to get on the ice, a buddy of mine went out…on the wrong ice. Their curling rink ice was right beside the hockey ice divided by a wall.

    They were not happy.

  • JJay278

I can’t find curling on the Olympics coverage! It’s pissing me off! They keep saying it’s on but I can only find one channel in the day with full day coverage and they are showing crap.

    • TracyJean

Because is on at zero-dark thirty on NBC Sports Network – really, the US/Russia women’s match came on at 2AM CST

      • JJay278

Oh man! (sigh) I hate NBC

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    As i understand Curling, it’s a test of finesse and strategy, as you try to score by landing your Stone(s) as close to the center of the target as possible, while trying to knock the opposing team’s stone(s) out….. the ‘sweepers’ use their brooms to make a smooth path for the stone to follow, usually in a curved pattern (or “Curl”)…. But, it works both ways, and the other team tries to do the same…. And yeah, it may be a little bit tedious sometimes (like Baseball), but it’s fun to watch… Jawamax 8<{D}

    • kssturgis62

the Sweeping keeps the stone in the path you want it to take, especially when you throw the stone at a heavy weight. But there are times when you cannot sweep and you have to wait for the Stone to curl on its own. Then you will start sweeping to keep the stone going on that path after the curl.

the Ice is like bubble wrap (upside down bubble wrap). There are bubbles on the ice that are swept off that cause a stream of water that no one sees to make the rock take that path. after every game the ice is resurfaced. T

    • Maxx

At my age, the only place I want to land my “stones” is out of me. 😉

  • LegalizeShemp

I hear girls love men who curls.

  • kssturgis62

Curling is amazing. thank goodness I understand the game fully now. I will have my full of curling this year. Scotties just finished, now Olympics, then the Brier and finally the World Championship. Love this sport.

  • sambar2

Once I start watching curling I can’t stop. It’s like it’s so boring it’s mesmerizing.

  • Eric

Pretty sure the Olympic ice sheet is still doing curling tutorials here in Salt Lake. I may need to take the wife.

  • Zach Brewer

I admit it, I watch curling every chance I get. I plan on trying it at the local curling club too.

  • Adam Wood

Any sport in which it’s perfectly acceptable to repeatedly use the term “get your rocks off” on broadcast television has to be a winner.

  • Katie Carroll

I have watched curling avidly during this Olympics and the last and I still don’t understand the scoring. But the Norwegian men’s pants are great! Let’s pair them with the US hideous Ralph Lauren sweaters for a truly heinous Olympic ensemble.

  • neoface

I’m getting into curling as well, there is a lot of strategies involved, much harder to control than shuffleboard. It’s more fun than watching golf. JMO.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/TUASondrakistan The Ugly American

I remember first watching this on TV back when our family was stationed at Loring AFB Maine.

  • Frank DiSalle

Curling is to hockey, what chess is to checkers…
