What will the NRA say in response to Friday’s shooting at Los Angeles International Airport? What would Monty Python’s Eric Idle like the NRA to say? Apparently he’d like the NRA to apologize to the world for defending the Second Amendment. Piers Morgan could only dream of reaching this level of righteous British indignation.

That’s some consolation, we suppose.

With guns, that is.

  • descolada9

Well, my respect for Eric just went out the window, along with what shreds of common sense he might have had.

    • Matthew Koch

You notice Eric ignores the REAL PROBLEM here with this latest sh00ter, MENTAL ILLNESS !!! That is the FLEEBAGGER way of doing things, deflect !! deflect !! deflect !! This is the one thing all these mental midgets mass sh00ters have in common, mental issues !!! I have to remind people again that ONLY .0034% of all gun crime deaths in the U.S. were committed with LEGAL GUNS in the hands of a responsible citizen, that means that over 99% of these deaths are committed with ILLEGAL GUNS in the hands of CRIMINAL THUGS !!!
When you refer to cops as pigs you are on your way to being a thug or you are already there !! This latest sh00ter was a mental midget with mental issues & the LAME STREAM MEDIA & FLEEBAGGERS ignore this FACT, typical FLEEBAGGER behavior !!! We will not punish the law abiding citizens who use their guns responsibly because of a couple mental midgets out there !! Fix the real problem or we will be forced to relive these type events again & again, the more time you FLEEBAGGERS spend on trying to take the guns out of law abiding citizens the longer these mental midgets will keep kiIIing innocent people !!

As of 2009 gun violence in UK has risen 89% over the past decade. As of 2011 violent crime in US has declined for the 5th year in a row.

    • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

I saw something to other day that indicated we’ve had something like a 15% uptick in violent crime rate this year.

      • GaryTheBrave

        Source please?

        • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

I did not look for it last night when I posted; found these easily enough today

I typically try to multi-source all new stories before accepting any aspect of them …

The NY Slimes article hints at it, but doesn’t say it … the sad bit is, we’ve seen all the signs and had those discussions here.

Not really surprising given some of the headlines in the past few months.

          • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

Yeah! The down vote troll stopped by .. I must be onto something,

          • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

Didn’t think it was you for a moment … if I had screwed up, you’d have told be about it. I expect the down vote trolls imagine that they are counting coup …

          • GaryTheBrave

Thanks for the sources. I truly appreciate it. The USA Today states that 26 per 1000 persons experienced violent crime, a 15% increase. Doing some reverse math I come up with an increase of 3.3 additional persons in 2012 over 2011 experienced violent crime (per 1000). To put the original data set in perspective 2.6% of the population experienced violent crime in 2012, an increase of 0.33% over 2011.

CNN has the data of 22.5 per 1000 (2012) vs. 19.2 per 1000 (2011). Again, let me put that in percentages of the overall population. In 2012 2.25% of the population experienced violent crime vs 1.92% in 2011.

          • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

Gary, nice work here — question though, is that 0.33% supposed be 33% or is it really just ⅓ of 1% …

          • GaryTheBrave

1/3 of 1 percent, an increase of 3.3 per 1000 persons.

My point is that percentages can be used to lie. One has to know the basis.

Second edit: The 0.33% figure is based on total population, not year-to-year.

          • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

OK, got it, thanks for that clears it up. Sorry for being a bit thick … somehow I thought that the value in question was the % change between scalars …

          • bobby

Read “Should we really be concerned about the violent crime rate suddenly soaring in the US? Probably not.”

          • mike_in_kosovo

That’s odd – UCR stats don’t support the article’s claim.

            Violent crime rate:
            2011: 387.1/100k
            2012: 386.9/100k

      • descolada9

Sadly, I would say that the increase in violent crime would have to do with a general societal attitude after so much as gone wrong in approximately the last decade. Also, how much of this uptick in crime is concentrated in our worst cities, like Chicago and Detroit?

        • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

Thats a good question … I am not sure how to go about gathering that data in a simple fashion. The demerol gives me the attention span of a ferret on amphetamines …

          • GaryTheBrave

And you’re not even offering to share.

          • QWYS (Hydralisk of the Swarm)

You would not believe how hard it is to find a pharmacy that actually carries demerol these days … I can’t take anything else … demerol and morphine only, allergic to everything else at this point. Long story, massive AB resistant infection, bone marrow quit working, jump start bone marrow, my allergies reset .. it was all quite interesting.

Have to drive 20 miles to get my refills, so I tend to bogart my demerol.

        • mike_in_kosovo

Looking at the UCR stats, cities 500k and up show an approximate 2.2% average increase in violent crime as a whole.

The good folks here recently elected several notable dimwits by landslide who have since gone to Washington and cawed about gun control. However, the reality is thus: even the majority of Lib Americans don’t want anything to do with the rest of the world’s ideas on guns.

It’s less than the ~7x (6.8x, actually) violent crime rate multiplier for the UK.

To pre-empt your lame attempt to make it about the guns, note that the majority of the murders are gang/drug criminals killing each other and that guns are used defensively to *PREVENT* or *STOP* between 750k – 2 million crimes yearly.

Suddenly we’d have no constitution and what would you libs do if you couldn’t protest? Because the right to free speech will eventually be done away with as well so Obama can silence his critics. You libs are too stupid to see the bigger picture. And besides, banning guns won’t stop criminals. If guns are banned and confiscated from law-abiding gun owners, then only criminals have them. Then you libs would be demanding answers about, and would be too stupid to see that more laws don’t effect criminals.

What is it about banning things that people don’t get? Banning something doesn’t stop the demand, it just drives the demand to (now) illegal and often dangerous places. Plus it is now a source of rebellion. (E.G. Marijuana)

Also, legalizing something won’t necessarily make people want an item. Alcohol is legal but there are plenty of teetotalers.

    • Richard Jefferies

Great point. How many times to liberals squawk at us about legislating morality, and ending the “war on drugs” and legalizing marijuana because it is waste of time to ban it.

      • Bathing Suit Area

I suspect if marijuana was the most popular murder weapon in the country, liberals might have a different view of it.

        • Richard Jefferies

Rifles account for a fraction of the percentage of firearm homicides, and AR-15s a very small percentage of rifle homicides, so your statement is fallacious, but I’m sure you knew that.

Eric said nut cases in the UK aren’t armed. Seems to me the nutjob with a knife killed a soldier there quite recently. If the soldier had been armed, he’d have been able to protect himself. Has Eric ever had bodyguards? Just asking.

In 2012 there were about 8700 alcohol-related deaths in the UK. That is about the same number of gun-related murders in the US (which is a larger country).
    From http://www.civitas.org.uk/crime/factsheet-alcoholcrime.pdf
The National Probation Service advises offenders that ‘alcohol is a factor related to a lot of crimes including many assaults, murder and rape cases (between 50 and 80%). Drinkaware, the industry body, publish lower figures for where alcohol is a factor:
 One in three (30%) sexual offences
 One in three (33%) burglaries
 One in two (50%) street crimes.
These estimates generally come from victims’ responses to the British Crime Survey.
Maybe the UK should ban alcohol and close all pubs.

No thanks. Other than being impractical and adding more expense to purchasing a weapon, it’s a bad idea. What if you go out target shooting with friends and one of them wants to try out your gun? Nope…can’t do it.
What if you’re trying to teach your son to shoot? Nope…can’t do it. What if you’re going out of town and your wife and children are at home without you, and you leave your gun behind for her? Nope…she’s on her own.

What happens if the RFID chip malfunctions, and you need to use your weapon? Might as well throw the weapon at the intruder/mugger.

Can the RFID chip be jammed/hacked or otherwise manipulated? If so, can authorities just decide to shut down all weapons with the RFID chip within a certain range? Boy oh boy, there’s a feel-good story waiting to happen!

Too many questions…too many vulnerabilities. A bad idea from people who watch too many Bond movies.

    Eric Idle ✔ @EricIdle
@mikemoore75 @drlindapearson That America allows idiots to control their gun laws?

No, thankfully we have a Repubic that prevents knee-jerk reactions and the actions of the few insane, violent people from changing our gun laws. It should not be the law-abiding citizens who do not commit murder who are forced to comply with gun laws that are a result people having zero respect for the laws. Doesn’t Eric Idle know that murder already illegal? If guns were illegal, I doubt murders would let that stop them.

Also, America does not allow British citizens control our gun laws.

    Eric Idle ✔ @EricIdle
@sw_sasse @mikemoore75 Ban all guns. Try that. Then join the rest of the world.

Um, no. If you want to live in a place that bans all guns, go live in one of those places. You just admitted there are places all over the world that would fit this description. Go there and leave us freedom-loving, Constitution supporting Americans alone. In fact, why don’t you invite them all to live in Britain?

  • MNWoman

I mourn for the families of the victims of gun violence, just like I mourn for the families of the victims of knife violence and bombings. Same with the families who lost loved ones due to drunk driving.

I could list the many nonsensical actions that have lead to the loss of innocent lives. The point is you cannot prevent all tragedies by legislating against things. We are not going to reinstate prohibition to prevent drunk driving. We are not going to ban knives to prevent stabbings. We cannot outlaw all materials that someone could use to make a bomb. It simply is not possible to do these things, nor would they prevent all forms of violence and tragedies.

Laws are already in place against murder, violence, drunk driving and actions against innocent people. It is not a sure way to prevent tragedies, but if we try to take away rights of the innocent because of the actions of the guilty, only the innocent, law abiding citizens will be impacted.

  • HanaFiveO

Without realizing it, he did tweet one salient thought; “Allowing nut cases to own assault rifles. That is just insanity.”
I agree the loophole is with the mental health industry. It is dominated by progressives who refuse to report violent patients to authorities. Until we have some meaningful reform and stiff penalties for mental health practitioners who shield their nut job patients, these incidents will continue.

    • Lem Renrek

Unfortunately – none of the people making their self important argument against assault rifles knows what in the hell they are talking about. You are just spewing for the talking point BS that everybody else disregards. None of these weapons are “assault rifles”. If they had a suicide bomb strapped to them, you wouldn’t go around calling it a hydrogen bomb. Educate yourselves – or gracefully bow out of the discussion.

I have absolutey no idea what you people are talking about. Just above here there are “lines” such as in a Grade 8 test of some sort. Too many people have just gone over board in my opinion. In all sorts of way. By the way, seems I can’t fill in the lines. What a shame.

Since I haven’t read your comments, here goes. And I’m ready for thumbs up, thumbs down, whatever.

I am Canadian, I am an Albertan. Sometimes we are compared to Texans, hey! okay! Sometimes Texans are called southern Albertans. Again, whatever. :) or.. we are northern Texans.
I used to work for an oil related company in south Edmonton, the boss used to refer to Texas pipelines as spaghetti. Small, in other words. We aren’t called the Great W hite North for nothing.

Many of us also happen to like guns. Somehow in the minds of many left leaning people these things seem to go together. Especially when it comes to making “good fun” at Alberta, or Texas, or ? I just want to say that isn’t the issue.

Yes, I do talk too much. I probably write too much. Anyhoo, Americans who love guns, think about this. You can still have your guns. But please, do you have anything against screening? for mental illness? for previous problems with firearms? Do you have anything against limiting the variety of guns available to purchase – oh, boy. Yes, I guess you might. I really hate to put it this way, but think about the “Canadian way” Our so called right wing is still very left of your right wing. I guess that’s how I could put it. Most of us still stand by our ” commie” medicine. What a wonderful thing it is. Thank you Tommy Douglas, and others. Yet, we are still kinda goofy Canadians. We love our medical system, as stinky as it can be sometimes , well, there is alway human error. No one in the world can avoid that.

As you can see, I digress. Love your guns and have them. But please, have some common sense.

Idle is a product of a leftist uk generation …an actor a fringe comedian in his youth , a product of a British system that is very different to the usa a system that is so far to the left even moderate centrists parties are ostracized a Europe controlled by ex communists and socialists. He like most leftist thinks one size fits all gun laws , one size fits all health care. When a man who has made money out of being ‘just’ a comedian and an actor most of his life i would not take him seriously. I notice in the usa you take what actors say with way to much gravitas. They are actors i mean seriously do you really care what Eric Idle thinks of your gun laws ? Eric should care what you think of him.
