Time correspondent Michael Grunwald quickly decided better of his tweet suggesting he was looking forward to writing about Wikileaks founder Julian Assange being taken out by a drone strike.

Tough crowd. Grunwald decided to delete the tweet, but not without further antagonizing Assange’s supporters and others.

Grunwald linked to a piece he published earlier this year arguing that the government is obligated to limit individual freedoms to protect lives, but the “don’t tread on me crowd” wasn’t impressed.

Update:

After withstanding the closest thing Twitter has to an unmanned drone strike, Grunwald apologized.

I, for one, am completely outraged. Someone in that mess of tweets called Julian Assange a journalist. That is unforgivable, they must be banned from everything for life.

    • ObamaFail

That was the part that got me too.

      • objectivefactsmatter

That is THE only thing that disturbed me. What BS.

Same here, but with the addition of Grunwald and Time. I see no journalism among the lot.

    • WhoMeToo

I’d say Assange is more of a “journalist” over anyone at the following
==> ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, etc…etc…etc….

      • AmericanMom

Amen to that!!!! The alphabet networks and news magazines are opinionists, not journalists. Dedication to and idolization of Barack Obama has them news, truth and fact challenged.

      • objectivefactsmatter

Not really. Assange is a full-on subversive in action and ideology. Those clowns just follow along as idiotic dupes. With a few exceptions.

But still, Assange is the least journalistic because on the surface all he talks about is integrity of “the truth” but all he does is take data points to weave lies. His product is straight up subversive propaganda.

        • WhoMeToo

Not a fan of Assange, but, If you don’t understand sarcasm, I can’t help you. And if you don’t understand that the MSM is engaged in the exact same subversive propaganda, there is no help for you.

I’d like to step in, do my part as Libertarian, and say “stop banning stuff!”. They will try to accommodate you, then the next guy calling for it…then the next. Understand how it works, where it leads?!

Could the reason why he would defend it, is not that he hate Assange but he loves Obama more. He would defend a drone strike on the fairground in Missouri. Not to kill anyone but to make sure the ground could never have a rodeo there ever again.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

I’d be interested to see how many of the outraged tweeters above would react if the name Dick Cheney was mentioned. I’m willing to bet several would wish a drone strike on him.

See that last tweet Grunwald put out? He’s trying to turn this around on the Tea Party, like it’s going to make people forget that he was just condoning drone strikes.

Plus, the original tweet that got this all started shows that Grunwald has admitted that he will blindly defend Obama’s administrations actions no matter what they do.

    • BigSky1970

Because he sees the so-called “Don’t Tread On Me Crowd” as the real terrorists. He’s no different than Obama.

Unlike Grunwald who hates his political enemies and wishes them dead. I wish no harm on Obama. I don’t hate Obama, I hate his policies that are killing my freedoms.

As much as I love it, I still blame the internet for some things, chief among them is the creation of 22.5 million “journalists” and “lawyers.”

Ask him who else it is that deserves a drone strike, besides Assange.

I mean, once you start down that path, you might as well keep going. As Charlie Starkweather, a spree killer of the 1950’s, said years ago, when capital punishment was more common: “They’ll hang me for the first murder– every killing after that one is ‘free’, so why not go for it?”

It’s like that joke about the dirty old man propositioning the attractive young woman, the punch line of which is, “We both know what kind of woman you are– now it’s just about setting the price!” We all know what this a$$ clown is– someone who can defend Obama drone strikes– now it’s just a matter of setting up parameters.

Guess he got pretty pissed about Assange’s appreciation and respect for Rand and Ron Paul?

Looking over the terrorists sympathizers, self-righteous traitors(I see you, Glen),hypocritical America-hating journalists(STFU, Conor), insane celebs, psycho trolls, and various deviants(CIS males!?!?!?) that came to Assange’s defense, I think Grunwald was morally and intellectually correct. Maybe Assange hasn’t done anything to warrant direct action, but here’s hoping he crosses the line one day. The world would be a much better place without that sociopath endangering lives for his fake causes, and the world would be better place if Glen Greenwald and a whole bunch of Assange’s supporters got turned into burnt hamburger along with him

    • milmar

You are hoping for the death of Assange and all of his supporters, and you think HE is the sociopath?

    • Evan Dickinson

You are an evil unamerican coward.

Sorry, I don’t have any sympathy for ASS-Ange. He isn’t an American citizen either, so I see no reason why the leftist had to delete the tweet.

    • milmar

You don’t have to have sympathy for him to not want him murdered without charge or trial. It isn’t sympathy that you are lacking, it’s empathy.

    • Zach Smith

Assange is kind of an unlikeable guy, being a narcissist and all, but I sure wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for any transparency from the US government.

  • Voice of reason

Classic lib maneuver. When will he call for,the drone strike on Bono for endorsing capitalism or Ashton Kucher for extolling hard work building your own future?

  • Dragomance

Grunwald’s tweet is certainly the dumbest here, but this one tried really hard.

    Ellie [email protected]

@MikeGrunwald is being a huge douche bag. No surprise from a wealthy cis American white male.

  • FaithColeridge33

Nobody is buying the apology… “The don’t tread on me crowd”? Is that an insult? You can get tread on if you want but leave me out of it.

  • Andrew King

I hate when people screw up then give a “non apologetic apology”

    • Nathan J. Cole

WHAT I SAID WAS REALLY WRONG, BUT SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO CRITICIZED ME SAID ANTI-SEMITIC THINGS, SO, SORRY.

      • Andrew King

        huh?

  • Jon

My guess is Grunwald’s opinion of Assange was quite a bit loftier after the first two rounds of Wikileaks document dumps, when all the information released from the Bradley Manning documents focused on U.S. activities during the Bush years and before.

It was the third round of Wikileaks revelations, which got into the early Obama years and State Department dealings involving Hillary, that Assange’s PR image started shifting from the ultimate Truth to Power speaker to someone who should be shunned. With Julian in full support of the Snowden NSA releases — the latest of which show Obama to have lied about aspects of domestic spying — it’s not a shock that Grunwald would pick this moment to decide that the highest-profile enabler of releasing American classified documents should have a drone fired up his keister.

Its confusing to me how a person could so easily make the leap from disagreeing with a persons principles and/or opinions to wanting them dead.

    • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

Not only that, they are subject to projection and perceive any who disagree with them as similarly wishing mayhem and violence upon themselves. Look at this hypothetical exchange, representative of many around here:

“I’m not sure that people who have entered this country illegally should be afforded all the same rights and privileges as those who followed the legal process.”

“OMFG you NAZI! You racist H8ER what do you want to do, send them to concentration camps instead?!?!?”

Hypothetical, but sure not unlikely, huh?

    Wait a second….

A lefty journalist starts to turn on Assange whilst supporting drone attacks and then the right embraces Glenn Greenwald when he calls out the lefty?

I have stepped into some weird alternative universe and I don’t know how I feel about it. Then again, I may be watching lefty wishy washing on foreign policy.
