Twitter has had a lot of chuckles at the expense of “Florida Man,” but today’s report from South Miami is no laughing matter. CBS Miami reports that police have taken 31-year-old Derek Medina into custody after he not only confessed to murdering his wife via Facebook post, but seeming posted a grisly photo of the murder scene as well before turning himself in.

The picture, which CBS4 and CBSMiami.com have chosen not to show, shows a woman identified in the post as Jennifer Alfonso, bent over backwards at the knees with her head in the corner of what appears to be a kitchen.

The woman’s left arm is covered in blood and blood appears on her face as well.

The post reads:

I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys take care Facebook people you will see me in the news” my wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope you understand me.

Fortunately, the photo has been taken down since.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to the future of social media.

    God help us…

Posting this as social commentary, rather than commentary on the particulars of this case (which we don’t really know), but the murderer is claiming that he has been physically abused repeatedly by his wife. When abused women snap and kill their abuser, they often get their case judged as justifiable homicide, and society tends to be understanding – if not outright celebratory. If this man was being abused (it does happen, women can be viciously abusive, both verbally and physically), it will be interesting to see how people react. I expect a double standard.

While I do agree with your assessment that some women being verbally and physically abusive towards their spouse, I would like to point out that this could be his way of trying to build a defense for killing his wife?

      • AMSilver

Oh, sure. That’s definately a possibility. The guy in this case seems to be more than a little on the loony, attention-whore side of the insane asylum. But just generally speaking, I have trouble believing that people would have the same reaction to a man who killed his wife in self-defense because of her physical abuse, as they would to a woman taking the same action. It’s one of those areas of ‘equality’ where people display that they don’t actually want to be treated equally.

While I’m shocked that he posted this picture on FB, I’m surprised he didn’t video tape it and post it on Youtube. That seems to be the place to post violence against others and other such crimes…

One thing is for sure, Derek Medina is guilty of the longest run-on sentence that I think I’ve ever seen.

Since each of us knows so little, and because it is impossible to know who among us knows best, we trust the competitive efforts of many to lead us toward new and better ways of doing things.

Of all the things Florida Man would do, have to say I wouldn’t have guessed this up near the front. Interesting to see how the facts play out in this.
